My husband and I have taken two Holland American ocean cruises in the past, but this was our first Viking cruise. Even though we enjoyed our HA cruises and would sail with them again, we will always look at Viking first to see if they have an itinerary to meets our desires first. All the positives you have heard are true: the service was excellent and exceeded expectations, everything was very well-organized, the food was superb, and the staff on the ship and the tour guides were helpful and knowledgable. Although Viking is more expensive than HA, we truly felt we received our money’s worth and that the value is greater. Rather than paying for expensive shore excursions and receiving a large bill on the last day, we knew exactly what we were paying ahead of time and, once we boarded the ship, we didn’t spend a penny except on souvenirs (we had pre-paid our gratuities and we didn’t purchase any hard liquor onboard). Others have written how wonderful Viking is, so here are some things I was curious about/looking for information about before the cruise but had trouble finding answers to. Perhaps others are wondering the same. Paris vs. Le Pecq: We were on the Paris and Normandy cruise which docked in Le Pecq. I understand Viking now has newer, smaller ships that are going to dock in “downtown” Paris, but I noticed the Le Pecq dockings are less expensive. I love Paris and have been several times. Let me clear: this cruise, regardless of where it docks, is not enough time to see Paris. If you really want to see Paris, you should book a hotel in Paris for several days and sightsee on your own. That is what we did. I would only plan on seeing Paris from a river cruise if that was absolutely the only way I was ever going to see it. You need at least an entire day (from opening to at least 5 pm) at the most popular attractions like the Louvre, Musee d’Orsay, Versailles, etc. On the first full day of the cruise, there was an all-day included Paris tour. If you preferred, you could take the bus into Paris with the tour group but then get off and spend the day on your own, which is what we did. I believe we were dropped off around 9:30 or 10 and we had to meet back at 3:30. I know from experience that this is not enough time to see any of the major attractions, so we choose to visit two smaller attractions. We also had our Metro pass from our time at the hotel before the cruise. The RER does travel to Le Pecq, and there are two stations about 15 minutes each walk from the ship. I had mapped these locations ahead of time and we bought the Metro pass that included Zone 5 for this reason. However, because of the provided bus, we did not need to use the RER. Yes, the bus was slower than the RER, but we would have to include the 15-minute walk into our travel time so we considered it a wash. Even with the RER, we would not have gained more time in Paris as the bus left right after breakfast and the ship left the dock right after the bus returned. There was also a similar bus into Paris on the last day if you didn’t want to do the included Malmaison excursion, but we did Malmaison. However, I remember hearing the times were about the same. My conclusion: Le Pecq is fine if you are doing Paris on your own before or after the cruise (which I recommend). If a river cruise is the only possible way you will ever visit Paris, then perhaps it might be worth more money to dock “downtown” as that would decrease your travel time into the city proper. Demographics/pace: This is definitely a cruise geared toward older adults. We are 40 and 44, and we were by far the youngest people on the ship. We anticipated this and weren’t bothered by it because, when we’re not sight-seeing, we like to sit and read and watch the scenery. While on board, we enjoyed the calm and the quiet. Room: We choose a French balcony room due to cost and we would do so again. Yes, the room is very tight with less floor space than even an interior room on HA but there was more storage. The Veranda rooms appeared to have very small balconies with two small, straight-backed uncomfortable-looking chairs. There was more than enough comfortable seating in the common areas - both indoors and out - that we never had any trouble finding a quiet seat in which to relax. WiFi: The WiFi was excellent, much better than on an ocean cruise. I had no trouble uploading pictures to Instagram. There was only one evening it was slow. Shore Excursions: Again, the guides were excellent, the buses were well-maintained, everything was well-planned and organized, and I especially liked the earpieces so that I could walk around and take photos while still hearing the lecture clearly. The best feature is that they were included in the cost of the cruise. I am removing a star, however, for the length of the excursions. Often, the ship would be docked at least half a day in a town and the excursion would only be a couple of hours including travel time. In fact, the only optional excursion we booked was because the included tour was only an hour (and that was the only tour that day), and we wanted to spend more time off the ship. The tours themselves were of a good length, but that left very little free time at the end to explore or shop. Usually, we only had about 15-20 minutes and you also had to walk back to the bus during that time. I’m not sure if this was a function of the older demographic and someone at Viking assumes one can’t or doesn’t want to walk around for another hour. Or perhaps it’s a matter of paying the guides/drivers by the hour. Regardless, there were many towns, shops, gardens, etc. that I would have loved to have visited and didn’t have time. (For the sake of completeness, when the ship is docked in a town, you may get off and explore on your own, which we did. I’m referring to other locations that we were bused to.) Read Less

This was our third Viking River Cruise (previously did 7 day Rhine and 7 day Danube, both of which I cannot recommend highly enough). Viking does an outstanding job, somethings I wish I had taken into consideration before leaving (which are completely out of Viking's control). 1. Our cruise began on the Thursday before Easter, this led to crowds and closures at various points of our trip. 2. In preparation for the 2024 Olympic games, Paris has construction projects taking place everywhere, traffic getting in and out of the heart of the city is absolutely dreadful (this from someone born and raised in Los Angeles) 3. Another factor for crowds, a European explained to me, springtime is when many school children take field trips to various locations. 4. Finally, the fire at the Notre Dame Cathedral led to increased tourist traffic at other locations. The Viking staff from booking to final departure were fantastic. We did not take the extension on either side of the trip, but booked our flight to arrive in Paris in the late morning. This allowed us to get our bags on the boat and spend several hours at the Louvre, which otherwise (due to other booked excursions) we would not have been able to see. Embarkation was great, the ship staff are outstanding. Excursion highlights, we took every included excursion (except those that conflicted with paid excursions) - several stops (after leaving Paris) include houses built in the Middle Ages that are incredible to see (Vernon and Rouen). Monet's Garden is beautiful. Out of Rouen we paid for the Farm and Country Tour which was a nice view of the Normandy country side, the farm is a neat experience. The excursion to the beaches of Normandy will leave you with a sense of profound gratitude for the soldiers of the D-Day Invasion. Having studied the history, then touring the site, I still cannot fathom the courage of the men that day. Paris at night was a treat, especially seeing the Eiffel Tower lit up at night. Our cabin steward Filip was great, the room was always perfect. I've seen other reviews where people complain of the size of the cabin, it is not spacious, but sufficient. The only time we are in our cabin is basically to sleep. I cannot speak to the entertainment options in the lounge in the evening, we never attended. We try to stay in town as long, doing as much as we can, after dinner, we're ready for bed. Several people we talked to mentioned the different events were a good time. The food is always top notch and the dining staff attentive to your orders and requests. The guides at each of the locations are always outstanding, usually locals who give you some much more than a guide who read a book about where you are going. At the tour in Versailles, it was absolutely packed, (literally shoulder to shoulder, front to back with people in some rooms), almost impossible. Our guide (I forgot her name) went out of her way trying to keep us together, inform us about the artwork, history, etc, and made the most out of the trip, she was phenomenal there. We will undoubtedly taking Viking again (Portugal, Rhine at Christmas, and the Norwegian Fjords for starters). It was the crowds that took the shine off this trip for us. So if that is an issue for you, the Fall would probably be a better time to book this trip. Read Less

We had always wanted to see France and had been receiving information on Viking tours for years without paying much attention. However almost a year before sailing, as we entered our 45th year of marriage, we started talking about what we should do for our 50th. About that time we received another brochure and realized that with advanced booking, we could see Paris and much more at a pretty reasonable price and decided we shouldn't wait and looked into booking. Our travel agent had nothing but good things to say and we decided on an early April departure with a 3 day add on in Paris prior to embarkation. It turned out to be one of the best decisions we ever made. Viking saw to every detail, from plane reservations to safely returning us to the airport for the trip home. The ship was immaculate and the staff and crew was helpful and friendly. The cabin was well laid out and didn't seem crowded at all. The bed was really comfortable, the shower had plenty of hot water at any hour of the day and was really nicely lit. There was plenty of storage space for luggage and clothing and the Wi-Fi was as good as at home with no interruptions that we noted. The food and onboard entertainment were beyond excellent, it was like eating in a Michelin star restaurant for every meal. The shore excursions were wonderful, the local guides really made a big difference and they gave wonderful insights as well as facts about each port. Our pre-tour extension in Paris was amazing, in great part because of Viking staff at the hotel to greet us, give us the lay of the land upon arrival and suggest and arrange daily activities, restaurants etc. We really loved the trip and cannot say enough nice things about Viking. They made sure every aspect of our trip was as good as it could be, we felt very "taken care of". We would certainly like to take another trip with this amazing cruise line. Read Less

We jointed friends who were celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary and had a wonderful time. This was our first river cruise, and we loved the smaller number of people and the included excursions. The food was wonderful and the service great. I'm already perusing the Viking brochures for my NEXT river cruise. The ship needed some refurbishing. The common rooms sofas, etc. were pulling apart at the seams, but I'm sure Viking has a refurbishing in mind soon. We found the shore excursions very informative, although some of the local guide's English was hard to understand, so one had to listen closely and I'm sure we missed some of the sightseeing information. We especially enjoyed the beaches at Normandy and happened there on a beautifully clear day in November. The acres of white crosses against the blue sky will be remembered forever. What a sacrifice by so many. Can't wait for our next cruise. Read Less

We really enjoyed our time on the Viking Kadlin and the itinerary to Normany. Visiting Normandy was truly a humbling experience. Meeting fellow passengers was delightful and the guided tours were superb. Our only disappointment was the quality of the food at dinner. Maybe because it was the last cruise of the season on the Kadlin but it seemed like we were served a lot of leftovers and not exciting menus. We will definitely sail on Viking again and look forward to experiencing more exciting itineraries and hopefully an improved menu. Our veranda suite was great and our cabin attendant was excellent. As it was cold and raining many days we did not have the opportunity to enjoy our balcony very often. We would probably just save some money and reserve just a veranda cabin or even an river view as the lounge areas are very accommodating to all the passengers. Read Less

My husband and I had enjoyed one previous Viking river cruise (Danube Waltz), and we planned and booked this trip nearly 21 months in advance. I have a particular interest in World War II history and have visited Pearl Harbor several times, so I was very much looking forward to spending time at the Normandy D-Day invasion sites and the American cemetery at Colleville-sur-mer. Our good friends and travel companions, of whom he is a retired U.S. Army brigadier general, had not traveled on Viking before this trip. We were proud to share with them all of the exceptional aspects of quality and attention to detail for which Viking is famous. Our cabin was perfect and always spotless. All of our meals were absolutely delicious, and we appreciated the variety available at each meal. "Blondie," the amazing gentleman who entertained us at the piano, was, by himself, worth going on the cruise. His talent and lovely personality enhanced every evening in the lounge. Nearly every crew member was pleasant and welcoming, and acted as though taking care of the passengers' needs was enjoyable and fulfilling for them personally. I know they all work hard and we tried to be very generous with them at the end of the cruise. Our shore excursions were delightful as well as informative; we particularly enjoyed Montmartre and Lyon. The highlight, of course, was the full day at the D-Day invasion sites. The sites, the commentary from our guide, and my feelings of deep gratitude mixed with sadness, will stay with me forever. Read Less

We had a large group of college classmates...average age 67...with their spouses. It was awesome to do the daily excursions together, meat for drinks and dinner and entertainment every night. The Viking Kadlin was so welcoming, clean, quiet. Our one-room cabin was roomy with lots of storage (who would have thought it?). The bathroom was spotless with a heated floor. The food was scrumptious and the service crew assiduous and polite...all spoke English very well even though most of them were Eastern European by birth. Each day we had a ship newspaper with the schedule of activities and meals and other events. One day we had a tour of the bridge with Captain (the vessel crew were all French)...the Kadlin is a very modern ship with all the bells and whistles of navigation and power systems to enable the Captain to ensure a smooth and safe trip. The excursion guides were all local experts...we learned so much of about the towns, battlefields and France. The activity director was super...funny, patient, and knowledgable. Wow! We were so impressed that we want to take another Viking Cruise. Read Less

This was actually our 2nd Viking River Cruise as two years ago, my classmate and I also did the Viking River Cruise to Eastern Europe. Obviously, we enjoyed our pre-cruise stay in Prague and the cruise itself to Budapest, Croatia, Serbia and Bucharest. And this October, six of us classmates will be doing the Rhine Ruver Cruise. Needless to say, we are happy and enjoy doing the Viking River Cruises! During our first cruise to Eastern Europe, we didn't have the leisurely walk which we joined during our Paris cruise. We hope you will have the leisurely group again for the Rhine Ruver cruise this October as the six of us classmates are 76 years old by then. In both cruises, we were very pleased with the tour guides. Please note that we have done leisure cruises with Holland America, Princess, Norwegian and Royal Carribean cruise ships since 2010. Viking Cruise is the only River Cruise we have joined and are very happy and satisfied overall. Read Less

Viking won our interest with a great itinerary including Paris, Giverny and Rouen along the Seine. After boarding the Viking Kadlin longship and settling in, we visited several of the highlights of Paris on the first day: Notre Dame of Paris, Champs Elysees, and the Eiffel Tower. We loved the leisurely pace of cruising down the Seine. Our visit to Monet’s home, beautiful gardens and water lily pond was definitely a highlight of the week. The Seine meanders through France toward the English Channel. Charming homes, orchards and farms, and white limestone cliffs line the river’s edge. Not to be missed, our experience at the Normandy beaches and the American cemetery was impressive and moving. Our return trip to Paris included a stop in Les Andelys to visit a castle ruin built in the 12th century by Richard the Lionheart. Versailles and its awe-inspiring, extravagant rooms and gardens left us with a lifetime of memories. We topped off our final night at the Eiffel Tower which glowed in the Paris night. Our meals and entertainment onboard the Kadlin were fabulous! Such a good cruise! Read Less

I have always wanted to go to Paris. I searched different options and always went back to the Viking Paris to Normandy trip because we would see so many things in one vacation. I knew that Viking Cruises had a good reputation and decided to try them. Being new to that area it was attractive go with a trip that did all the planning for us. To insure that I did in fact see Paris, we added a 3 day stay there before our cruise on the Seine River. From the time we arrived at our ship, the Kadlin, until we departed for the airport our trip exceeded all of our expectations. The ship was so well planned. A place for any mood: outdoors for exercise, a little golf, walking or just sunning. A quiet lounge to read, socialize or enjoy the scenery as we glided down the river. Dining choices from formal to casual to al fresco. Every meal offered many choices and because I am gluten free, the maitre'd paid special attention to my every meal! Our cabin was perfect- we had a Veranda B. We found that the rest of the ship was so inviting, we did not need anything bigger. While the main purpose of our trip was the many cities and places that we visited, every evening there was something fun to do back on the ship. Our director was awesome and very entertaining while providing us with daily information about what to expect next. Every single person who worked on the ship was attentive, helpful, at our service! We enjoyed most shore excursions that were included in the ship and also added some optional excursions. Every one of them was well organized and entertaining. What can I say, I cannot think of one negative critique which is unusual for me:) We both loved it so much we have already booked our next trip. This time cruising the Danube River! I think the most important point I can make is that this trip was as carefree as it could be. A true vacation!! Read Less

Our crew provided top notch service and it was very nice to have the same people every day. They really got to know you. The ship was spotless, food delicious, accommodations comfortable. We met so many fun and interesting passengers and made some long-term friends for future trips. We like the small ship 200 passenger experience and the majority of the passengers were in our general age group. There were no young children and this type of trip would not be appropriate for anyone under high school age. Enjoyed every aspect of the trip and highly recommend this adventure. Viking had a respectful and moving agenda at the cemetery, and I still get choked up telling the tale to friends. Service with Viking is always a key feature, and each member of the staff wants to make the customer happy. I never saw a staff member frown. We had some small transfer issues that the managers handled quickly and appropriately. The food was superb, and the enrichment activities and lectures were most informative. Every shore excursion, both included and pay as you go, were professional and sharp. One small disappointment. The Paris dock was more than 30 minutes from the city center. If you expect to walk off the boat and stroll to the Eifel Tower you will be let down. My first trip to Paris, and I want to go back! We wanted to see World War II beaches/memorials primarily; also, spend 3 days in Paris prior to cruise. We like the convenience of unpacking once with good food and wine available. However, we were surprised and somewhat disappointed that we spent as much time on buses to excursions and that itinerary seemed a bit confused, i.e., we went to Monet's Garden one day then the next drove by it again on way to beaches. We did not feel we had enough time at the Normandy sites. The lovely but totally unnecessary long lunch that day could have been simplified which would have given more time. Also, the embarkation village was a total non-event.....perhaps a more inviting place with something to actually see? There were some real highlights: the trip to the apple farm with sheep dog demonstration was outstanding, our favorite sidetrip. The hostess was delightful. The light show at night at Rouen an unexpected treat and awesome. The time we did have at Normandy beaches was highlighted by the special program, very special.. As on our previous Danube cruise 2 yrs. ago, our fellow travelers were great and we enjoyed the company of 3 other couples every evening, with the splendid food and wine. Viking Kadlin was excellent - the cabin/service and the restaurant/food was great throughout (a lot of local French food choices, e.g. escargot which we normally would not be trying!). The onshore tours were uniformly enjoyable, especially memorable was the visit to the gardens of Monet at Giverny (although the place was packed with tourists!). We chose this cruise because we wanted a new cruising experience. We had always been on big ships, in big ports, and wanted a change up. Viking delivered on that change. The Kadlin was a beautiful ship and very comfortable. The staff was incredibly kind and accommodating. Our cabin steward was incredible! The true winner of this cruise is the ports. For me, Rouen turned out to be the true gem. The city was beautiful and charming, the food was delicious, the people were so kind and friendly, and there was so much to see and do. The excursions were all so wonderful. I highly recommend the walking tour in Le Pecq after you board. It turned out to be one of my favorites! The castle is absolutely stunning and the gardens are unlike I've ever seen. If you do the Paris by Night Tour you wont be able to get many pictures. The tour is given in a closed bus and the glare from the windows ruin any type of picture, which was disappointing for me. I thought that I (and my 16 year old) might find river cruising a little slow, but with all the excursions they had planned, and activities on the boat, we never had a second to be become bored. Despite the brutal heat wave and high humidity we experienced, the cruise was an incredible experience and I highly recommend anyone curious about river cruising to give it a chance! Read Less

For a very long time I have wanted to visit Monet's house and garden at Giverny and the visit was well worth the wait , even the the weather was unseasonably hot. Also had an unforgettable day at the Normandy beaches. The ceremonies there was so reverent and respectful to the heroes of that campaign who should never be forgotten. It was our first Viking cruise and it was nearly flawless from start to finish. It won't the last as Viking exceeded our expectations at every turn. The service level couldn't be better as the entire staff was accommodating, friendly, and knowledgeable. We are very seasoned (50 years) travelers and both the tours and the guides were the best we have ever experienced. Every day was interesting and unique from the others. My wife has a medical issue that necessitates a rigid diet at all times. The maitre'd and his staff went above to ensure her needs were met while providing excellent meals all of the time. The only negative was we had to catch an early (0700) flight From Paris to London for a connection to return to the states. Read Less

We had a terrific time. And the crew on board were wonderful. Special hats off and thanks to Anett, Brenton, Blondie, Zoltan and his twin (Stephen? So sorry I forgot), and Captain Cedric. Entertainment band De Capo were terrific, too. Food: terrific. Wines: Terrific (recommend you get the upgrade package, well worth it). Shore excursions: Terrific. Have already booked another one in Netherlands, wish we could take Anett, Brenton, et al. along. The Normandy tour was very good, wish it was longer. Walking tour of Rouen was very nice, too, ending at park where Joan of Arc was burned; her church there was very impressive. We also did the 3-day extension (before the cruise) in Paris, stayed at little boutique Hotel Rochester, which we highly recommend -- a short two blocks off Champs Elysees. The ship herself was immaculate stem to stern. Our only regret: That we couldn't stay aboard for another 25 or 30 trips. Read Less

Our first Viking River Cruise was the experience of a lifetime. The Kadin was a lovely boat. Clean, elegant and beautiful. We enjoyed not having a large crowd and many decks. Our ports from Paris to Giverny to Rouen to the beaches of Normandy provided adventure, as well as magic. France is far more beautiful than anticipated. We fell in love with Paris as a city. Our visit to the Louvre and private tour provided by Tours by Locals was outstanding. Our guide shared excellent views, exhibits and historical facts with us. While cruising, we greatly enjoyed meeting new friends, and were very impressed by the impeccable service of the Kadin crew. Housekeeping was stellar. The meals were excellent. Breakfast was our favorite meal of the day, and we don’t eat breakfast at home! We would certainly take another Viking River Cruise. If there is a last minute vacancy deal list, sign us up! Read Less

In 2016, some friends and I enjoyed a Seine River Cruise that included the Normandy Beaches. That cruise was with Mayflower Tours and was aboard the Amadeus, chartered from Lueftner Cruises. No sooner did we disembark the ship than I swore I would definitely return. And I did just that this past June...sailing on a similar Normandy Beaches cruise but this time with Viking River Cruises. BIG difference between the two cruises. Both river cruises included complimentary wine with both lunch and dinner, daily excursions, and basically similar stateroom amenities. However, the standard Viking Kadlin staterooms were MUCH smaller than the same category cabins on the Amadeus. Both ships were beautiful and immaculately maintained. The staff on both cruises were friendly and professional. To me the BIG difference was the quality and variety of the food, with the Viking Kadlin meals falling far short of Lueftner's Amadeus. And the cost difference was quite surprising. The Viking River Cruise was quite a bit more expensive than the one offered by Mayflower Tours. It definitely pays to shop. Read Less
