Montego Bay, Jamaica. Docked and could go thru a very small shopping area in about 10 minutes! That was enough for me. We have been to Ocho Rios, Jamaica before and I have read nothing but bad things about cab drivers, people, been given drugs to purchase and seen all the natives try to get you to purchase everything they own. I think Jamaica is dirty, and annoying with very limited excursions to really enjoy safely. I really don't understand why any cruise line goes there. Costa Maya and others are much better places to port. Read Less

We took a small shuttle taxi to Doctor's Cave Beach and had a nice day. When we got into the terminal it was extremely crowded and there was a LONG line waiting to buy tickets for $20 for a hop-on and hop-off shuttle. I had read that you could get a JUTA cab outside the terminal, but it is important to make sure you were getting in the government licensed cabs by checking the license plates. We asked a policeman where to catch one and she pointed to one across the street, so we paid $5 per person and went to the beach. We thought it was going to cost $5 per person entrance fee, $5 p.p. for a chair, and $5 for an umbrella (two can share one.) When we got there the price for each item was raised to $6--maybe because there were so many ships in port that day! Anyway, the beach was crowded, but nice. At least we had something to do in Jamaica where we felt safe. We have been there before and it is a port that I would not recommend doing much running around on your own! We found a JUTA cab right outside the entrance and just returned to the ship, although there was shopping right in that area, if desired... Read Less

We have been to Ocho Rios, but never Montego Bay before and were really excited! Great weather and beautiful water of course. We found a van taking tourists to Doctor's Cave Beach for $5/pp and got on.I would recommend taking a cab instead of a van if you are going to the "Hip Strip." Same price but quicker. The van waited to fill up past capacity, then as soon as we were moving they informed up that first we would be stopping to "shop." The entire van protested luckily, so on we went to Doctor's Cave Beach. It is $6/pp to enter the beach. We didn't rent chairs, we just used towels to lay on. We took a glass bottom boat with a few others for $20/pp (operated by locals)once we got to the beach. It was nice and relaxing and lasted about an hour. Be prepared to be hassled constantly. If you don't want a bracelet, don't let them just come up to you and tie it on your wrist. I was half asleep on the beach when I was awoken to a man saying "respect" and tying a bracelet on my wrist. You will also be asked to buy joints over and over. Be careful, there is police on the beach, and locals make more money by selling you a joint then turning you in.The "Hip Strip" wasn't very "hip." We prefered Ocho Rios, but it was still beautiful here and the people friendly. Would go back, but not a favorite. Read Less

We took a 12 minute taxi shuttle ride to Doctor's Cave Beach which cost $5 per person. The entry fee was $6 (cash only). We rented an umbrella and two chairs which were $6 each for the day. The wood chairs are old and uncomfortable. The water was beautiful, clear, and the perfect temperature! I was afraid the water would be too warm and not refreshing, but it was just right. We snorkeled around the pier and it was wonderful. The calm water is so clear and there are lots of fish. The Bar and outside restaurant was a bit pricy, a large hamburger and fries was around $10, but tasted good. Anytime you want to leave, there are dozens of taxi shuttles waiting to take you back to the ship. Be sure and tell them exactly what ship and terminal you are going to! We would visit here again. While I have been to Jamaica several times, this was my first stop at Montego Bay. Other than the port souvenir shops, there is little to do at the actual pier. A taxi/shuttle is necessary to reach the actual city and sites. Taxi's were cheap and readily available. We hired one to take us to Margarita-ville $5 pp, he talked about the town on the drive there, asked us how long we would be and then waited in a parking lot across the street for us. Margarita-ville was a fun and lively place, the water-slide and water park were great. The nachos are huge and the drinks, while expensive were tasty. I like to have my passport stamped at each port, I asked the immigration officer at the pier and she said stamps are not allowed unless you were staying on the island. This has never happened at other ports, must have been a grumpy officer. Read Less

In Montego Bay we had booked a private tour to do river rafting and visit the beach. The river rafting was ok but not great. We were floating in tubes down the river for an hour and a half, which was too long for our young kids. The tubing guide also tried to demand that my husband double the tip ($20) that he offered. It was a bit creepy. After the tubing we went to Aquasol beach. It was ok but not a very big beach and we had to pay admission. Read Less

Those not interested were let off at Margaritaville. The rest of us continued on. We got a tour of the city, taken to some cool unique spots, shopping, and more. For lunch he took us to this little hole in the wall looking place called Scotchies. It was amazing jerk chicken and pork. So amazing. Read Less

We spent most of our day on the Hip Strip, which was not quite what I expected (I had never been to Jamaica before). Lots of friendly but aggressive shopkeepers who will follow you around the store and tell you everything is on sale and their prices are the lowest. Doctors Cave Beach Club was nice but will cost you $18 for entrance for two adults and an umbrella. Most of the cab drivers that hang around on the street will offer you a ride and then some weed. Then when I asked for chairs we were told that they were 6 dollars each to rent. Forget that!! We brought a sheet with us from home and laid it on the beach and relaxed and played in the ocean. Beware of the buckets of beer which were 16 dollars for 4. They didnt even come in bottles, they came small in plastic disposeable cups! (they looked like a bucket of urine samples!) Every 20 min someone is coming to sell you something. When I said no for the 14th time, all I kept hearing was "No Problem mon! Yaaaaaaa mon!! It made me not want to go there ever again.... Read Less

I will sum up what we did in the ports just in case someone is interested, The first was wed at Montego Bay and we went with a group from our roll call to Sunset beach resort and I have to admit it was worth the trip as everyone from the adults to the kids seemed to have a great day! we left and caught a Taxi to the Hip Strip and checked out Margaritaville and did a little shopping then headed back to the ship about 430 that day. We have been to Jamaica a couple of other times and I have to say Montego Bay (for Us) was no where near as bad as Ocho Rios as far as how pushy and dirty etc. we liked both because it is a beautiful and such but to me it was noticeably calmer.
