I worked for cruise lines in sales during the 80s, cruised dozens of times, and recently have had excellent experiences on Holland America Line. HAL didn't have the itinerary we needed for a transatlantic this October 2010, so we were already booked on Celebrity's new Eclipse. This shortie was a chance to check out the line's personality and join the repeater's club - we booked late and took a minimum outside (no veranda) at a super cheap price, so had low expectations. We're in our early 60s, semi-retired.
We stayed with friends and drove in torrential rain to the Port of Miami, where we left the car in the garage. Pricey at $20 a day but admittedly convenient. Embarkation, late morning, was a breeze, no waiting at all, and Celebrity's sparkling wine welcome is a nice touch.
Our (guarantee) assigned stateroom was fine, as far as you can go forward on the lowest Continental passenger deck, last room by a door leading to staff rooms, so there was frequent traffic. Didn't bother us at all - the room was quiet, convenient to elevators. Size and decor OK, though chair had a large spot in the center, very unappealing. Chip in the bathroom vanity surface. I suspect the ship shows its age in many such small ways. Vessel sinks are trendy but too small - could barely hold a blouse I soaked after a tomato juice spill. Our steward did a fine job, always having the room made up quickly yet remaining invisible.
Directly next to door to staff cabins, lots of traffic. Convenient to elevators.
