My wife and I took the Carnival Triumph from NYC to ports of St. John, N.B. and Halifax, N.S. in Canada. The cruse was nice, but lacked anything that was special or memorable. There was little to see or do in St. John. This is a smaller town, and while the town's people were friendly and accomodating, some areas of the town were in need of clean-up and repair. Afterward, I overheard a couple in the buffet line say, "why would any cruise line put St. John as a port stop?" Halifax is a larger city and we found the Citadel tour very interesting. More to do and see there, but still not a lot in terms entertainment or shore excursions. While the Carnival Triumph was clean and well maintained we found it to have a frustrating floorplan. Mid-ship floors end somewhere in the middle of the ship, requiring you to take stairs or elevators to upper or lower floors to go further fore or aft in the ship. We learned that this size ship is larger than we would want to cruise on in the future. Too many people. The swimming pools and spas were at-capacity at most times. We found our dinner waiters to be friendly and attentive, but seemed to be stretched thin at times disappearing for periods. Our cabin steward was friendly and made a point of learning our names. He also kept our cabin in excellent condition. Other than the dinner staff and the cabin steward, we didn't notice anyone going out of their way to be overly friendly. We have cruised on a cruise line previously that might be considered to be less of a "fun ship" than Carnival, although many people on the staff of that ship called us by name with a smile on a daily basis. The evening entertainment was excellent with the exception of the magic show which seemed to be undecided on whether it was a magic show or dancing show. Our dinners were excellent, the lunch faire good, and the breakfasts were so-so. Scrambled eggs were poor and the toast may have been made the night before. The temperature of the breakfast food was lukewarm.
