Excellent service on a previous river cruise allowed us to look forward to this ocean cruise with much happy anticipation. Our pre-cruise stay in Madrid was wonderful. Our hotel was near the public transportation line and we had no trouble traveling throughout the beautiful city. We spent two days at the Prado and surrounding area, and never tired of walking around the town. The bullet train took us to Barcelona for our cruise, but the scheduling allowed us a second full day to explore the city and enjoy the food before we left port. We enjoyed the various dining options on the ship. The main restaurant offered table service for breakfast and dinner with a good variety of selections. It had open seating, and we never had to wait more than a couple of minutes to be seated. The World Cafe on an upper deck had a huge selection of choices in a buffet setting with both indoor and outdoor seating. In addition, there is a grill near the main pool and Mamsen's, offering some lighter fare in the comfortable Explorers Lounge. Finally, the ship offers to specialty restaurants for which reservations are required. Manfredi's offers Italian themed dishes; while The Chef's Table serves a fixed, five-course, "themed" menu that changes every couple of evenings. There is an included shorre excursion in each port, plus numeroud optional choices at additional cost. We found all the excursion guides to be extremely knowledgeable and engaging. Giulia's "Art and Architecture" tour in Florence was fascinating and fun. Swimming in the Mediterranean Sea while docked in Monaco was another highlight of our trip. Our post-cruise stay in Rome allowed us to experience the beautiful city and see Michelangelo's David. Traveling on the "Hop on-hop off" bus gave us the opportunity to explore many of the historic sites. We've already booked our next cruise with them for the Viking Homelands. Read Less

This was an excellent cruise line. One of the outstanding features is that it is really an adults only cruise. I have nothing against children but it's not relaxing when you have to listen to whiny children on a cruise you've worked so hard to be able to pay for. Time and place, etc. It was educational as well. Shore excursions offerings were spectacular and educational. The guides provided were excellent and knew their stuff. Another plus with Viking is that they don't try to sell you things while you are on your vacation. Have cruised Royal Caribbean's Alaska Cruise. While that cruise was enjoyable, they were always trying to sell us things like liquor packages, pictures, etc. They did not do this on Viking. Also big plus was the size of the ship. It was smaller and more intimate yet inclusive. Staff was excellent. Meals were very good. So nice to have a veranda in every stateroom. Would highly recommend Viking and will go again in two years on another cruise. Read Less

First, we, like many others on the ship, did not realize that the itinerary could be extended to 14 days and we disembarked at Civitavecchia. The embarkation in Barcelona was somehow affected by the local taxi strike, causing us to sit on a bus (thankfully, air-conditioned) in the port for an hour rather than a lounge at the World Trade Center. Because the Viking Gaudi tour was already sold out, we booked a tour from Viatours, which we had to meet at Park Guell. Since the taxis still were not running, we were forced to use the metro & walk uphill to the park in the 90+ temperatures. However, Sagrada Familia was worth it! The other shore excursions were a mix of the free ones included by Viking & ones we purchased from Viking prior to the trip. In looking at similar tours offered by Norwegian, we noted that the Viking was significantly cheaper for the same excursion. Having taken the Norwegian cruise in the Hawaiian Islands last year, we noticed how many things for which Norwegian charged and Viking did not. As a person who drinks a lot of water, I was happy to find this was free; Norwegian charged $40 for a case of water on that cruise! We did not buy the upgraded drink package but were quite happy with the quality of the wines with lunch & dinner which followed the countries where we docked. Refills were offered in the dining venues. Drinks in the bar areas were an additional, but not unreasonable, charge. I was surprised that another reviewer criticized the food. I never encountered anything that I felt was over-salted, & I tend to under-salt our food at home as my husband has blood pressure issues. While getting into the 2 premium (but free) venues was not easy, we dined once in both. The Chef's Table was particularly elegant, with wine pairings for each course from the standard pours. One night when we could not get into The Chef's Table, we had to settle for Beef Wellington at the World Cafe! There was an additional buffet on the open deck area of the World Cafe/Aquavit Bar where local specialties were grilled to order. In all, we felt the quality and variety food was outstanding. Service was above average, and we certainly did not encounter anyone with an attitude. Having a free launderette on each cabin deck was an added perk. Soap was automatically supplied at the push of a button. Our biggest regret is that we did not make an appointment for one of the planetarium shows. We enjoyed the deck party and movies in the pool area. Regarding the pools, the depth was not graduated & more than 5' deep in the main pool, more than I prefer. However, we had plenty of other things to do since there were no days when we were not in a port. Read Less

I have been on many many cruises in my life, but this Viking cruise was the absolute best. I have to say it’s spoiled me for amy other cruise line. The ship was gorgeous, but in a very classy way. No “Vegas type “ atmosphere. Just clean well thought out architecture. The service on Viking is outstanding. Cruise staff remembered my name every time and also remembered my drink order. The buffet was unlike any that I have encountered before. Clean presentation, portions that were realistic & service above reproach. The dinning room was also fabulous. The attention to detail was very apparent. The staff made you feel very welcomed. I have to say one of the highlights was the spa area. I was so unique & inviting. Many cruises just get you into this area to upsell their products. Not Viking, they really want you to enjoy their unique area..the snow room... fantastic! Our cabin staff was so attentive. If you needed anything, just ask. I was so impressed with Viking that we booked another cruise for next year ‘ Read Less

Orion was immaculate, a new ship and the crew was together just two months prior to our sailing; so in essence, everyone was "new" onboard. In true Viking fashion, everything went very smoothly (for us). We essentially sailed what's now called Mediterranean Odyssey (Barcelona to Venice). Our cruise was somehow overbooked, so the ship seemed more crowded than usual, full capacity I'm sure. (We've cruised with Viking several times, both River and Ocean.) Nonetheless, they asked for daily real-time feedbacks and seemed to make adjustments along the way. Overall, the trip was very enjoyable. Unfortunately, just about every port we went to was extremely hot. The walking tours would have been wonderful strolls otherwise. Nevertheless, we saw and learned so much. The trip gave us what we wanted: an overview of the land for future visits. Things that were unexpectedly outstanding: the cruise director and the entertainment. The cruise director was very personable and talented. He also mixed with the crowd. We found the singing/dancing by the four young people at the theater totally amazing. When not performing, they greeted us at the theater doors, and impressed us as ordinary people, all from the UK. When on stage, however, they transformed into professional performers who sang ABBA, Beatles, and Broadway songs. Their choreography was excellent. I was transported back to the 60s/70s. Parts of the Broadway songs even brought tears to my eyes--just wonderful performance. Read Less

We selected this ship and its itinerary as we wanted to visit this part of the world and this cruise fit our schedule. I particularly wanted to see Barcelona and return to Monte Carlo. This brand new ship, the Viking Orion, was beautiful. I loved the design and openness of the ship and the various touches of technology. Food was first rate, and all of the staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming. My only complaint was that the entertainment, particularly the musicians, were not of the quality that I have come to expect on most ships. Given the competitive nature of auditioning to be selected as a cruise ship musician, I am surprised that they were not more skilled. It would also have been nice if there were more options on board the ship when we were "at sea". Shore excursions were wonderful, and it was a real treat to have WIFI, wine, shore excursions, etc. part of an all-inclusive fare. This is extremely enticing! All in all, a wonderful experience! I'm eager to go on another Viking Ocean cruise sometime soon. Read Less

We will never use any other ocean liner than the Viking we loved it far above our expectations!! The staff was helpful every time, food incredible and the staff their we’re superior. The food everywhere on the boat was increadible, fresh and wonderful. Pools were incredible. Boarding and unbarkkng were fast and easy and all transfers were organized and on time always. Activities on the boat were great too. All the service in the boat we can’t say enough good about it. Easy to use washer and dryers like having our own hair dryers in each room. We never used the coffee pots as we loved being out on the ship and eatting and drinking with others it was an incredible journey for sure! Read Less

Viking was our first and only choice for an ocean cruise. The Viking Orion is a smaller ship with only 930 passengers (a huge selling point for us). We did a 15 Day Grand European river cruise two years prior so we knew what level of service to expect. They did not disappoint! First class again in every way! We were welcomed at the Barcelona World Trade Centre by the Viking staff with smiles and cold bottled water. Viking is extremely organized and buttoned down. Check in was as smooth as silk. Our stateroom was not available until 2:00 p.m. so we were told to make our way to The World Cafe and lunch would be available. We were onboard the ship within minutes and welcomed with cold clothes and champagne. Nice touch! As an aside, this cruise was in recognition of our wedding anniversary. Viking delivered a bottle of chilled champagne and beautiful cake after we arrived in our stateroom. Both were very tasty! The ship overall is very beautiful and modern. You really feel like you are on a luxury cruise ship. Our stateroom was perfect for the two of us. It was extremely clean. The bathroom was a good size, lots of room in the shower. Plenty of storage space, heated floors, quality toiletries/towels, etc. all replenished daily. They provide luxury robes and slippers. The bed was super comfortable. I'm still trying to figure out how there wasn't one hint of a wrinkle in a pillow case or the duvet cover after they made up our room! There is plenty of closet and drawer space. We asked for extra hangers which were delivered within minutes. An added touch was having daily information about the cruise and ports of call on the stateroom television. Restaurant menus were updated daily so we could decide beforehand where we wanted to go for dinner. If we missed the evening talk about our next port of call, we could watch it later that evening or the following morning. You could also view the status of your account on board. There were several dining options available. Food selections at the specialty restaurants were plentiful. The Chef's Table was gourmet delicious! There were many choices offered from the buffet restaurant food stations and the Aquavit Terrace daily. Room service was always available. We had no complaints about any of the food offerings. Quantity, quality and presentation were outstanding! Especially the non-stop stop king crab legs offered nightly. They were a hit! Bar service was excellent. The bar tenders/servers were all very friendly and interesting to talk to. We purchased the Silver Spirits beverage package and enjoyed top shelf liquors and a great selection of wines. We did not use the swimming pools, spa or fitness centre however we did tour the spa. It's equipped with a snow room! The sports deck had mini-golf. A good selection of excursions were offered at each port of call; some included in the cruise and some not included. We did daily excursions at each port and stayed on land as long as we could exploring. All our tour guides were friendly, knowledgeable and some with a good sense of humor. The only excursion we were disappointed in was the visit to the village of Grimaud, France. With the time we had available, we saw mostly big yachts and villas. Time could have been better spent in St. Tropez. Viking is extremely organized in everything they do. Especially getting guests efficiently off (and back on) the ship and loaded on to awaiting buses. We were provided bottled water and wished a good day by senior Viking staff when disembarking at each port. When returning to the ship after each excursion we had to go through a security check (which is done efficiently). Cold clothes were handed out arriving back on board the ship. On our final day in Livorno port before heading to our final disembarkation destination, Civitavecchia (Rome), we were greeted back at the ship after touring all day with a red carpet, cold champagne and all the ship staff welcoming us back. They were all lined up dancing to the music was playing outside. Another nice touch! Entertainment on the ship was fine for us. After full days of touring in the heat, night life wasn't that important to us. If you're expecting to party at the all-night disco, or play the slots, this is likely not the cruise for you. No disco or casino. Entertainment was offered most nights by the Viking Singers in the Star Theatre as well as guest entertainers. The Viking Band played in the Torshavn Lounge for those that wanted to dance. There were movie nights and dancing under the stars pool side on select nights. The resident pianist, guitarist and classical duo performed nightly in the Atrium. We watched one 3D movie in the Explorers' Dome. It was visually amazing! There are only 26 seats available and you need to reserve at guest services. It does not cost anything. An added perk on the ship was the self-serve laundry/ironing facilities on each level. Viking may seem a bit on the pricey side but they are definitely worth the money. We would recommend Viking to anyone and will be looking at future travels with Viking again. Staff, service, dining, excursions, and overall experience on this cruise ... all first class! Read Less

I booked the cruise as to celebrate my son’s graduation. I wanted to spend quality time with him before he left for college and we had the time of our lives. The ship felt brand new. The room was splendid with wonderful linens on the beds, plenty of room to relax and an amazing bathroom. Our room attendants were very accommodating and a pleasure when we saw them. All of the staff we encountered were extremely professional. We enjoyed all of our excursions, some included and others we selected based on preference. My son’s favorites were Monte Carlo, Lucca and Vinci. I also enjoyed visiting the gallery in St. Tropez. It was incredibly hot and crowded in Florence and I needed to return to the ship a little earlier than the end of the tour which was accomodated. We treated ourselves to massages and spent half a day in the spa including the snow room! Food was generally delicious, enjoyed the specialty dining except the Chef’s Table but it may have been the menu for that day. Truly felt pampered the entire trip. The extension in Rome was a perfect and seamless continuation of our amazing trip. Read Less

Our daughter always wanted to go to Italy. We were scheduled to go in December 2017 but the cruise was oversold or something so they rescheduled us and gave us better rooms in the process. Turned out July was a wonderful time to be in the Mediterranean. It was just beautiful. The ship had only been on a couple of cruises since being launched so it seemed brand new. We had been on the Star and loved it but this ship was even better. The technology especially has improved. Our favorite port was St. Tropez and our favorite excursion was there to Port Grimaud. The rose wine in that region was delicious. Dining was varied and easy with whatever type of venue you might want. Our favorite place for a snack or dessert or just lounging is Mamsen's. We had to tender to a couple of the ports and that process went as smoothly as possible. Everything about Viking is professional! Read Less
