First of all - the service (one exception described below in MDR) was great. We had one small problem in the cabin which was fixed and then a bottle of champagne showed up. Personnel tried very hard to please & make everything right.
Entertainment was super. Musical director Ian Brock led with musicians, singers & dancers top notch. Not usually a fan of production shows but we loved ovations, edge and don't miss the Motown show & dancing on the pool deck, great fun. Lectures by Gid Poole re comedy improv & standup were good as was the "fish" lecture. The 2 chef contests/battles were so funny -- hard to believe they aren't comedians. Late night comedy by Al Duscharme hilarious & surprisingly clean for late-night comedy. You don't have to be dirty to be funny. We went to one game show with the cruise director, Paul -- also fun. Caught a bit of the strings - good musicians also.
Cabin was lovely but a little noisy. I'm a light sleeper. Husband slept fine in the cabin, at the pool, in any chair available on the ship (complements to Celebrity). There is wonderful seating all over the ship, lounge chairs, hammocks, shade & sun. Check out the Sky Observation lounge with leather lounges high up facing the sea. I thought there might be a problem with smoke but the only time was during a Captains Club event. Solarium is a restful place to lounge whether you use the pool or not with dancing water fountains & soothing music.
We are "ship people" -- the ship is beautiful. St. Martin is nice. We went on a ship tour excursion with beach stop in St Kitts - also nice. But Old San Juan was a real disappointment. We arrived at 2pm, too late for a trip to the rain forest. We did a walking tour on our own. The streets were dirty, smelly with homeless people sprawled on the sidewalk.
Food was very good but confess we miss Michael Roux's menus and the steaks they used to have. The first night prime rib was anything but prime. It looked like it was cooked properly, a little pink, but could not cut it or chew it. More steak later in the cruise, same result. Other meals were good. But we had a waiter who didn't check back after courses, just wasn't at all attentive. We missed courses, had wrong food delivered, weren't given dessert menus one night, etc. The couple next to us said they didn't feel pampered & preferred Carnival or RCCL. Based on that waiter, I could understand how they felt. Usually, waiters describe the plans for nice events the next day such as the great Brunch in the MDR held on a sea day, the elegant tea but this waiter didn't say anything at all. We were lucky that we knew to look for these things -- our tablemates, not so lucky. & we had skipped MDR 3 nights so could not inform them. On the other hand, other meals in MDR both dinners & lunches were good. Breakfast was good too. Other venues, good service, good food. Loved the Aqua Spa Cafe breakfasts & lunches.
Looking forward to a 10-11 day southern caribbean on Celebrity soon. I can picture myself right now with a cup of coffee (coffee is very good) on the balcony.
