New Year's Star
New Year's Cruise on the Star

This was our first cruise with NCL and all in all we had a good time. We liked the Freestyle, eating whenever and wherever was perfect for us. There are a few things that have some room for improvement, but we would definitely consider cruising with NCL again.

Embarkation: This was one of the things that could be done better. The lines were long and it didn't seem to be very organized. It took way too long to get on board.

Service: This was generally very good. Our cabin stewards were helpful and did a good job, most of the servers were very nice and friendly. The free dining rooms were rushed, I guess because more people eat there. We didn't like ordering our dessert at the beginning of the meal - it seemed like they just wanted us in and out. The service in the charge restaurants was much better. The food was pretty good everywhere, even at the buffet but it could be hotter. We saw them put pizza out at 4:15pm for a buffet that opened at 5pm, so no wonder! It would be nice if they offered lemonade there like the other cruises we've been on.

Ports: You don't get long in Cabo San Lucas - my wife wanted to shop so we just walked around the town. In Mazatlan we did a beach/resort tour which was very nice. And in Puerto Vallarta we went on a tequila tasting tour. How can you not have a good time with tequila?!!!!!!! We liked the ports and always like Mexico.

Entertainment: We didn't do many of the day time things they had on offer. Most of them were seminars to sell you something, or bingo, which was not cheap to play. Trivia was fun and we met some nice people that way. We went to all the shows and it was a mixed bag of entertainment. The first show was a little bit of everything. The singers and dancers that night were not very good and we almost didn't go to their big show because of that, but we're glad we did, because their other shows were much better. The Chinese acrobats are amazing, don't miss them. The comedian was funny and it was nice that he didn't have to use any bad language. The magic show was great. Best show on the ship. The tricks are amazing and he was very funny too, especially with the people who helped him on stage. Second City was okay in places, a bit childish for our tastes. The piano man in Gatsby's is great and does lots of tribute evenings which are fun to listen to. We liked the band in the top lounge for dancing. New Year's Eve there was a big party by the pool which was great. I don't know if they do that on every cruise, but they should.

Thanks NCL - good cruise and we'll be back!
