Celebrity Summit - 14-25th August 2009 - the best of times!!
Destination: Europe - Western Mediterranean
This third cruise we had done, proved to be the most superb holiday experiences of our lives!!
We visited Barcelona, Villefranche, Livorno, Naples, Santorini, Piraeus, Dubrovnik and finally Venice.
Having only used Ocean Village ( 1 and 2), when we booked, we wanted a different experience to the "freestyle" and we sure hit the jackpot.
From boarding at Barca, which was so easy and efficient ( we were one of the first ones aboard and couldn't get to our cabin till 1:30 ish, giving us time to wander around and marvel at the ship)...to the final disembarking at Venice, we enjoyed every minute of this trip.
The staff on the ship were the most courteous, hard working, attentive and friendly group of people you are likely to meet and our cabin stewards were just great! The Summit is a well maintained ship, spotlessly clean and extremely efficiently run. The entertainment was professional presented and although sometimes a bit loud around the More poolside, very suitable for the passengers onboard ( the Russian string quartet were quite brilliant)
The thing you will find about Celebrity is the little things that are so special and make the experience....cabins been cleaned and looked after three times a day, the bar staff on decks ( the jamaican contingent were terrific...." You're on a cruise...I have the booze")Canope's daily ( even though we were not Concierge) a couple of bottles of champagne from the HouseKeeper, frozen fruit kebabs served by the Officers by the pool, Gary the entertainment director, the dancing teacher ( lovely South African girl)...I could go on.
Our cabin/stateroom was extremely comfortable and roomy. The balcony a reasonable size.
We would advise that people do look at excursions booked by CruiseCritic.com people...its well worth doing. If you want a car in Civitavecchia, book one!!!!! We missed out as they had all gone. The Celeb excursions are quite expensive although the one to Cinque Terra is one not to miss. Be brave...do your own thing.
The dining in the main restaurant was great with a varied menu every day, especially sumptuous on formal nights and plenty of it. Our night at the Normandie restaurant was a very special occasion and the service quite exceptional. The menu was extremely well presented and the food excellent. Breakfasts and lunches in the Waterfall cafe perfectly presented and tasty.
As in all reviews, there are the occasional gripes.....some of the Spanish children on board had no manners at all and treated the staff around the pool like slaves....this was totally unacceptable and the parents did nothing about it and the only other gripe was smoking on the balcony next to us which was a bit of a pain in the mornings when you opened the balcony door for the first time and you received a whaft of smoke!
All in all I would recommend Celebrity Summit although if you are after a young and vibrant ship, this may not be for you.
For us, definitely a 10 out of 10
