We (my wife and I) took a short cruise on the Carnival Liberty to the Bahamas, which was fairly relaxing. Outwardly, the cruise was like most of the others we have taken, but apparently, Carnival has enthusiastically joined the world of cost-cutting to improve their bottom line. This was quite, er, interesting for us.
Now, this was not a cheap cruise; we paid as much for this as we did for our Princess cruise in Alaska last year. But we selected this cruise because of the dates (before spring break) and the availability of this type of stateroom. We had cruised with Carnival once before and were lukewarm about it, but decided to give them another chance.
Embarkation was easy and the fact that I was using a cane to get around sped things up. Disembarkation will be addressed later. The obligatory muster drill ran about 45 minutes, which was quite a difference from the ones we have experience before.
The cabin was nice, with the exception of the issue with the curtains that was resolved when we brought it to the attention of guest services. The beds (pushed together) were comfortable. There was ample storage space for a cruise of this length. There was not a lot of room to pass by the end of the bed to get out to the balcony and a similarly tight space between the bathroom and the closets. The bathroom was clean except for stains in the toilet. The instructions on the security safe indicate you should use a credit card or driver's license to activate the lock. They do not tell you that your key card will work just fine.
