This was our first river cruise.

In planning for our cruise, we reviewed costs of various cruise lines. Surprisingly, Scenic was less than Viking but offered more since it was all-inclusive - gratuities, drinks any time, a number of excursions at each docking, butler (loved the 6:30 knock on the door each morning with a fresh pot of coffee), laundry etc. These extras at no cost made the cruise very enjoyable. Our friends had taken a Viking cruise and after a day on Scenic, their opinion was that a Viking ship could not compare to the Scenic Amber.

The Scenic Amber was new ship and fantastic. Cabins are spacious with lots of storage including space under the beds for luggage bags and 20 hangers. The king sized bed was very comfortable and you could change positions of the mattress with a remote control. The "Sun Lounge" concept is excellent - essentially provides an extra 40 sq ft of cabin space. You can sit on the 2 chairs and watch the scenery no matter what the weather - if it is raining, keep window up; if sunny open window so that you have a balcony. Toiletries are top off the line (according to my wife - L Occitane). The crew were very friendly and willing to do anything they could to satisfy you. Meals were delicious and had lots of choices - hard not to gain some extra weight. They have a special restaurant called Portobellos with a 6 course meal. All guests can book it once during the cruise - would recommend they book as soon as they arrive to get the day that is best for them.
