A great ship made not so great by serious design faults.

We wanted a relaxed cruise and also were keen to try the newest and biggest ship in the Princess fleet. Food was really superb in any of the eating places. .. best we have ever had on any ship. Cabin was typical and was very clean and well planned even if the usual bit too small.. overall very good though. Entertainment was very good. The ships Buffet is a big step forward and the general decor is very nice. Ports were not much to our fancy as we don't do diving etc and beaches don't mean much to us .. we have thousands of miles of great beaches here in Australia.

ONE OR TWO BIG negatives for this ship. The lifts were appallingly slow from the atrium (Piazza) . This seemed to be because the stairs did not go from the atrium (where crowds of people gather) to the floors above and below. So everyone uses the lifts even to go up or down one floor. People often pressed both the up and down lift call buttons when they got tired of waiting. I waited 15 minutes or so on more than one occasion.. and waits of 5 minutes at least for the lifts were common. The only stairs to all floors were at the front and aft of the ship.. a long walk to access them. This was by far the worst lift service we have ever had on a ship.

The second big negative was that there is not enough space on the promenade deck 7. most of its length it is very narrow and has no room for deck chairs. You cant use that deck to walk right around the ship..it does not go across at each end. How silly is that? The view of boats and other safety stuff along that mostly narrow deck is downright ugly. I saw people getting angry as they could not find a deck chair on the few small wider sections of deck 7. There is more room on the decks of the much smaller SUN class ships like the Dawn Princess etc. I simply can't believe that an experienced cruise company like Princess could make such serious mistakes in the design of a ship?? The fact that Princess accepted a ships design like this with these very serious faults leaves me dumbfounded. These problems spoiled what could have been a really great ship that stood out from the crowd. I met several other experienced cruise people on board who were of the same view. I hope they fix these problems on the new Majestic. Oh .. and thanks to all the crew for their top service.. really excellent.

Cabin Review

Balcony

Good view ..no real obstructions and a cheaper balcony cabin.

Cabin was very similar to other Princess ships and was a tad small but very well laid out. bed was very comfy and the cabin was extremely quiet. Kept very clean by ships staff. Shower had a hand spray and early trouble with mixer tap was fixed by a plumber. Cupboards and other storage were adequate for the two of us. No major concerns with the cabin and overall it was very good.

Port Reviews

Fort Lauderdale (Port Everglades)

Public bus system is very cheap in Fort Lauderdale.. as seniors we paid only $1 per ride. The river boat ride is well worth it.. to the alligator wrestler at one end of the ride.

Princess Cays

Great if you want a nice beach and similar water activities. We are not into that ourselves.

St. Thomas

Not of much interest to us... they push the sale of diamonds like crazy in the ports.

St. Maarten

I think this is where the planes fly low over the road on approach.. as a private pilot I was keen to see this. But it is overrated.. the planes land on a displaced threshold about 100 metres inside the fence and pass over the people on the beach at about 50 to 60 feet above them. Looks closer on many videos.
