The Breakaway is a lovely ship with a lot to do and a lot of people. The only other ship I have been on was the Norwegian Gem about 4 years ago. I compared the two a lot as both cruises were seven days to Bermuda. To provide general background, we cruised as two families – one with 2 children ages 4 and 7 and one with 1 child age 3.

Getting on the ship was very easy and quick. We arrived at the port around 11:30 and were on the ship around 12:15 or so. Compared to the Gem, there was no “wow” effect from getting on the ship as we did not enter the Breakaway into a main atrium. We entered at the elevators.

Compared to the Gem, this ship’s general areas felt very crowded most of the time. The only time I did not notice the crowd was outside after dinner. The other thing I noticed is the amount of smoke smell. Since the casino is open to the rest of the ship and it is in the middle of the ship, a lot of the common areas really smelled of smoke. Since I am not a smoker, this was a problem for me.

Family Balcony Stateroom

Our stateroom was a lovely family suite with a balcony on deck 12. This would have been very convenient if my son would have liked the Splash Academy. The room felt large and the tub in the bathroom was great and really put my son at ease. There is a lot of storage space for all of your clothes. I recommend bringing extra hangers as the hanging space is large but the closet does not have many hangers built in.
