Carnival Liberty - Western Caribbean
Embarkation: Embarkation was good and fast for a ship this size. We were on board in less than 40 minutes and lines moved quickly.
The opening buffet was really nice and was the best all week. They had a "make your own stir fry" which I thought was great. However, the food the rest of the week was just OK. We really missed the "hot breakfast" you get via room service on other cruiselines.
Ports: Ports of call were very different. We loved Costa Maya and did a shore excursion by snorkeling off a catamaran and had a great time. The snorkeling was awesome and we got to snorkel quite a bit before we sailed back.
Costa Rica: We did the Banana Plantation and Coastal Highlights tour in Costa Rica and found it extremely interesting. We got to see a Toucan and watched for monkeys and other wildlife, but it was a very hot day. We then went to the Banana Plantation where we received a very informative presentation and toured the facility. They also took us to a More nicer hotel where we could shop a bit before going back to the ship. I noticed there were always police around our tour bus whenever we got off, so I did feel more secure going with a ship's tour in this port. Also, we were approached by children begging for money while at the banana plantation. Please note there was no A/C at the Banana Plantation or at the shopping stop, so it was a bit warm, but there was lots of shade to try to keep cool.
Colon, Panama: We did the Coast to Coast by Railroad in Colon, Panama and found it to be the best tour. They bus you to the train where you ride to Panama City in about an hour (narrating throughout). Then they take you to a small shopping center for an hour and then the Miraflores locks where you can actually see the ships going through the locks. We would have liked to have seen the movie at the Miraflores Locks about the Canal, but they were only showing the film in Spanish at the time we were there, so more time or better planning would have been good at this stop. Then you board the train again for the return to Colon where they serve you a snack. Very interesting and wonderful day in Panama.
Overall Experience: We've sailed on several cruises and Carnival service is just OK. Food on this ship was just OK as well, but we really enjoyed the deli and room service for lunch. The BLT and Chicken Wrap (via room service) were our favorites. Our cabin was really nice and we spent a lot of time out on the balcony enjoying the wake of the ship. The Liberty is a beautiful ship for Carnival, although there was a dining room in the middle and you had to keep going up or down to bypass it, so I felt like the ship was chopped up a bit. We did get some bug bites and by the end of the cruise I was glad to get off the ship. They really didn't do a whole lot with the movies on deck and I was a bit disappointed this wasn't more utilized/advertised. We actually skipped a formal night to do the buffet and movie on the pool deck one night and were totally disappointed with the buffet food (salmon and lamb was all they had to eat so we wound up eating pizza). The shows were good and some were really funny. The cruise director, Todd, was a riot. The best food on the ship was the chocolate melting cake for dessert (offered every night in the dining room).
Disembarkation: This went smoothly for us as our cabin steward told us we could sit in our cabin until 8:30 a.m. which we did. Our color was called shortly after and we were at the airport by 9:30 a.m. Less
