About Us:
We are an active married couple ages 55 & 63 at the time of the cruise. This cruise marks our 3 Holland America cruise and my 15th cruise overall. Our 9th cruise together in the past 10 years. I just added it up and I have spend 105 days at sea in my life! Seems like a lot to me, but there are single voyages in the brochures that are longer than that!
We intended to sail on the Holland America 14 day New Zealand Discovery but we cancelled due to the unexpected very high cost of the shore excurions in the New Zealand ports of call.... but that's another story. In exchange we booked a "back to back" 14 day cruise on a "nieuw" ship, the Nieuw Amsterdam (new for us). We just wanted to get out of the cold weather and relax so we chose a familiar itinerary. One where we had been to all of the ports before and didn't feel the need to do too much in port.
Aft cabin 7141. 2 decks below the Seaview pool. Only noise is from heavy seas against the ship while stuck in port on Grand Turk for a few hours. Big room with sitting area. We didn't discover the drawers under the love seat until the end! Also under the end of the bed .. on day 3! Great bathroom. Tub. Great shower. Amenities on the wall in a pump. We brought our own soap that my husband likes. Bed was made into a king. Comfortable. We had a little issue a few days into the cruise. Hubby woke up with what he thought were bed bug bites.. 123... 123... 123 in 4 different places on his body. We went to the ships medical and they examined him and took pictures! He had something for the itching and they came and tore the cabin apart looking for the culprit to no avail.. but freshened up the cabin with all new linens and towels.. we'll never know what it was.. it didn't happen again and didn't get worse. We felt that they handled it the best they could. Our cabin attendant Cristina was great. She brought me a ton of extra hangers.. I overpacked.I gave her 5 minutes a night off .. by telling her she could skip out towel animals... We love aft cabins and looking down at the swirls from the "screws" as my husband likes to sound like Mr. Maritime ... Also it ensures you do a lot of walking on board.
