Having sailed on the Celebrity Silhouette 3 years ago, we knew we were downgrading somewhat. However, we were pleasantly surprised. Embarkation was a breeze and unlike the Celebrity where we waited around for hours before disembarking, the Gem handled this final part of the cruise like true professionals. It was a charm.
The Gem could use a little make-over as some of the carpeting is worn out, some of the seats in the Stardust Theater are at a slant and some chairs show signs of moisture but the overall cleanliness makes up for this. We saw staffers with flashlights removing smudges from windows and saw polishing of brass decorative pieces on a regular basis. The maintenance of the cabins was somewhat slow but it got done. We always had plenty of toiletries and towels.
I was never bored on this cruise. The nightly entertainment was great and varied. Even when I thought I was attending a show which was not exactly my "cup of tea", I came out feeling totally satisfied and wanting more. The Cruise Director is charming and his 20 odd years of experience certainly benefit cruisers as he is able to provide them with all kinds of activities.
The cabin was quite comfortable but the bed was not particularly so. We had plenty of closet space and never lacked toiletries.
