Met at the airport for transport to the ship. Getting to the ship and into our cabin went very smoothly, Cabin was sparking, and we had plenty of room to stow things away. Staff were more than welcoming. We were booked to sail on Crystal, but there was a change of ship earlier due to water levels. Fortunately we had no issues with high or low water and were able to complete the entire voyage on the Jasper. Staff were exemplary - couldn't do enough to make us happy. Bartenders were a little heavy handed with alcohol in the mixed drinks. Food ranged from average to brilliant, however, we never went hungry or thirsty. Range of tours was varied. Some of the "easy walking" tours were an effort for some guests. We were pleased to be traveling with a mostly Australian group. The atmosphere was relaxed and happy, and I believe our traveling companions helped to make it so. We sailed from Amsterdam to Budapest and then went on to Prague. The bus to Prague took 9 hours, however the Cosmopolitan hotel was a delight, and Prague was fun to explore. Read Less

My BF and I did this at the last minute because the price was right. The cruise started with 2 nights in Zurich. We were transferred to Basel on June 24 and boarded the ship. I admit my experience was influenced by the record heat wave coinciding with the cruise. However, the most disappointing aspect of the experience was the food. I expected some gourmet meals and there were none. The first section of the Rhine was boring, although the locks were interesting. The transfers were all excellent and we never had to wait to get into our rooms in Zurich or Paris. I didn’t like the location of the Paris La Meridian Hotel, as there was a lot of construction in the area. The included excursions were all good to very good, but they were outside walking tours and the temperatures were around 97 degrees. There was no air conditioning in any museums or restaurants, at least not the kind of AC we have in Texas where you are blasted by cool air whenever you go inside. I realize Viking has no control of the weather, but it seemed they could have adjusted the walking tours to occur in the early am or late evening when it was MUCH cooler. Dragging the very elderly passengers around in the afternoon heat was very risky I thought. Our guide in Speyer, Herman, was wonderful but he was in his mid 80s and I’m not sure how he made it through the day. Viking personnel did not sufficiently discuss the extreme heat, in my opinion. They NEVER mentioned there was an absence of AC in the towns and cities we visited, for example. I’ve been on well over 50 cruises and I’ve seen Ship Captains significantly adjust the cruises due to weather conditions to ensure the comfort of the passengers. I’m sure the local guides would have much preferred a morning or evening tour also. Crazy. Also, I developed breathing problems due to chronic asthma. This was not an emergency but I wanted a steroid shot so an emergency wouldn’t develop. We were in Mainz. Viking staff told me I had to go to the ER, no other option. They assured me I could pay with a credit card (wrong, cash only), they called me a taxi but the driver didn’t speak English and he dropped us off in the wrong location. It was a hospital but not the ER which we eventually learned was 3 blocks away. I huffed and puffed but made it OK. The ship apparently has NO medical support and no real information about medical care in the visited ports. I think this is irresponsible given the clientele they serve. I don’t expect medical care on board, but I do expect some support to obtain such. Read Less

This cruise was from Basel to Amsterdam. Unfortunately, a Viking ship had hit a lock and the Opal had to end the previous journey in Strasbourg, so that is where we caught the ship. Emails were immediately sent to inform us that our pick up and transfers would happen as planned only we would be driving to Strasbourg from Zurich and not Basel. Once on the ship we were escorted to our room. Within 30 minutes I was invited to go talk to the chef about my allergies. All week I received menus in the morning for lunch and dinner where I could select my food and they would prepare it for me without my triggers (peppers). On a tour of the galley I saw my picture on the wall with a not about the allergy and to watch if I sat in their area. All the waitstaff was aware at every meal and let me know it. I have never had that kind of treatment on any other cruise. The excursions were varied in terms of interest, length and physical difficulty. Bikes were available for those daring to ride them. Night time entertainment was very good. The Cruise Director, Yvonne, was beyond helpful and professional. There was not one staff person who spoke anything but English when guests were around and all were obviously helping each other get work done if they had free time. The cleanliness was outstanding not just in our cabin but all over the ship. Our private transfer at the end to the Amsterdam airport was a Mercedes Benz limo- we were expecting a taxi. The whole cruise far exceeded our expectations. Read Less

We were invited by some friends to join a group that was planning to cruise the Rhine River from Zurich to Amsterdam, so we decided to go. Our travel agent booked us on the Scenic Jasper with the rest of the group. From the moment we stepped on board on 5/8 until we got off the ship, it was a truly wonderful time. Our cabin was spacious and well designed, and it was kept spotlessly clean and supplied by the housekeeping staff. The ship itself was in immaculate condition, and the lounges and dining areas were extremely clean and comfortable. The staff, starting with the tour director, Tadej, and our assigned butler, Marko, all the way through the wait staff, bartenders, chef and kitchen crew. maintenance staff, and every other staff member, were all extremely personable and attentive to the needs of the guests. We were made to feel most welcome on board and valued as customers. The activities that were planned were interesting and informative, and were well planned and organized. There were several evening during which local entertainment was brought on board, and those occasions were thoroughly enjoyed. One night we were bussed to a concert hall at which we were entertained by two highly talented opera singers and a classically trained pianist. It was a very moving experience. The food and beverages on board were simply outstanding. Each night before dinner was served, Chef Bogdan came out and addressed the passengers with a preview of the meal; the wine steward described for us the wine and food pairings; and Cruise Director Tadej informed us of the next day's ship movements, available activities and individual options. The staff's attentiveness to the wants and needs of the passengers was impressive. My wife and I completely and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, and we are already planning to take another cruise with Scenic. And we are going to recruit another circle of friends and relatives to join us. When we left the ship for the last time, it was a difficult moment because we had been embraced so well by the staff and now we had to leave them. We will be back! Read Less

Trip of a lifetime. And it was made possible by the world class service of Scenic From the moment we were greeted by our chauffer at the airport in Zurich and driven by Mercedes to our hotel. To our butler service and comfortable cabin. To the unlimited beverages available 24 hrs between the lounge service and our mini bar. To the evening entertainment. To the white linen table service in the dining room as well as the snacks in the cafe. To the wide variety and choices of daily tours. To the tour device available on the ship and land for site discoveries. To the farewell dinner of lobster and the serenade by all the staff in the lounge. To the bus trip to the airport going home and being escorted to the proper airline desk. And it really was all inclusive!!! Kudos to Scenic. A wonderful memory to cherish. Read Less

I chose this cruise because it was my first cruise ever and was offered on a singles 50+ website. It was a small river ship, and as I was born in Germany (U.S. Army), it as well as Switzerland was at the top of my bucket list. It felt manageable to me, traveling solo as a deaf person. The ship’s crew were wonderful and unforgettable! Madalin in the dining room was my favorite waiter, always taking care of me and making sure I ordered the best meal on the menu. He also never forgot that I hate red wine and always poured the white without me asking. My cabin steward was wonderful, and so were ALL of the crew members! They were all in a line to greet us as we arrived, and there were many hugs upon departure. The food was fantastic, but for some reason, other passengers didn’t agree; they were used to getting tons of food at the buffets any time they wanted on the big ships. With constant port stops, there was no time to be bored. My only regret is that it was winter, so we couldn’t open our sliding glass door and turn out cabin into a balcony. Read Less

This was out 2nd cruise with Avalon. The first was on the Senn River to Normandy. The crew and dinning staff were always fantastic. The excursions were always planned well with almost perfect guides. The food on board was awesome and perfect. What i might suggest is a rating on excursions that require a lot of walking. We took the Maggot Line excursion, and while we were fine, there were a few that had to cut the tour short. During the cruise, there was an issue with low water, however the staff and Captain kept us advised as we approached the area in question. It turned out that there was no need for a transfer as the Captain was able to get the craft thru the area in question without any inconvenience to the passengers, which is a big credit to the staff of Avalon. The entertainment was great, and what i thought was really good was the pre-dinner briefing by the Cruise Director who always did a fantastic job. Avalon always does the best!!! Read Less

We have been thinking about a river cruise since retirement 5 years ago. Long time friends called and asked if we wanted to join them on Avalon Visionary for the Rhine and Moselle. So glad we did. It was our first cruise. The cruise was a total delight. Great scenery, comfortable, wonderful food. The entertainment was well chosen, including the on-board piano player. Service both in the cabin and in the restaurant was always efficient and friendly. The ship was kept spotless. Ports were well chosen and docking convenient to interesting sights. Day tours on shore were interesting with English speaking local guides. Joust, the cruise director, was always informative and herded the "cats" well in a friendly manner. Our friends have an extensive wine collection and brought wine for dinners each night. The staff didn't mind a bit and were very accommodating with extra glasses. Avalon was an excellent value and provided us with all the information we needed to book, arrive, sail, and enjoy the experience. Read Less

We chose this cruise because being from Canada we wanted a cruise over a week long and introduce us to Europe and river cruising. We have been on ocean cruises 4 times and wanted to try something different. We had a direct flight from Toronto to Zurich which was great not having to deal with connecting flights. We liked everything about Avalon and its all inclusiveness with meals, drinks and excursions. All stops had included excursions and/or optional extra ones that you had to pay for- there were also bicycles and walking sticks available. The guides all spoke English and were very informative of the history of the area. The atmosphere on board is very relaxed and friendly. Jost our cruise director was amazing, very helpful and made you feel at home. The average age of guests was in their 60s and 70s- we are in our early 60s. We even had an extraordinary 99 year old from Australia on our ship. The breakfast and lunch are buffet and supper is sit down with server and four courses but you could also have supper buffet style in the upstairs lounge. We enjoyed all of our meals and the selection was more than adequate. I found that everything I tried was very tasteful and always lots of choices. We enjoyed the open sitting style as you could meet and talk to everyone through the 2 weeks. Staff is very friendly and helpful and if you have a problem they do their best to help. Several nights there were entertainers that came on board from the local area and they were all great. Our cabin was on the second level with French balcony which was nice to have as you could sit or lie in bed with the doors open and watch the world go by- if you fell asleep you didn't have to worry about falling out of a chair. Room was a good size and had adequate storage areas for clothes. What is great is that nothing is far from any room and your not walking miles to get to the restaurant or lounge areas like on the larger cruise ships. There is a hot tub on top level but no pool. There are canopies over the lounge chairs which is nice for shade on the really hot days. We loved our introduction to Europe and went on as many tours as we could. The stops are all interesting and we learned so much. The excursions appeal to people interested in culture and history. We would definitely go on another Avalon cruise, even the same one in the future because then we could do different excursions and learn more of the areas we visited. We also enjoyed the more friendly atmosphere among the guests and staff as compared to the larger cruise ships. Read Less

We chose the cruise for our 20"th anniversary and specifically this one which ended in Amsterdam. We added a couple extra days at the end to see more of Amsterdam and to visit my ancestral town of Buer, Germany. The cruise was very good and met and often exceeded our expectations. The cabin was well designed and was kept immaculate by the staff. Boarding and disembarking went smoothly. Food was very good with both regional dishes and options for more typical American food. Service was also great. The daily tours were well run, but the schedule frequently didn't allow ample time for shopping or exploring on your own. The ship was fairly new and was in excellent condition. There was always a program before each dinner which explained the next days agenda--these sometimes seemed a bit long. There wa a happy hour each day prior to the dinner which was nice, but seemed understaffed and waits for a beverage could be lengthy. The group of 115 passengers was about 80% American with the balance being Canadian, Australian and New Zealand, largely 55 plus. Overall, a very good experience. Read Less

The financial value of the cruise. I am a widow and finances are important to me. I would take the same cruise again or another cruise in a second. EEVERYTHING was beyond my expectations. I was very hesitant to travel aboard with different languages, currency and traditions. The cruise director put me immediately at ease. Erna explained the daily events, what to expect and always answered any questions graciously. The entire crew were exceptionally helpful and caring. The daily excursions were wonderful and I only took one paid additional tours to the Alps. The guides used on the daily tours were wonderful. Very knowledge, friendly and seemed to enjoy sharing the knowledge of their communities and interact with their guests. The food and service was excellent and I enjoyed experiencing local foods as a choice on the nightly menu. Arriving in Paris after the cruise went very well at an excellent hotel. The hotel staff was very helpful to make the most of my first time in Paris. Arrangements to the airport in Paris was seamless and Viking continued to the end taking care of its guests. Thank you to the members of the Hild and Viking Company! Read Less

This was our second river cruise, the first being on a different cruise line. Our cruise started out with our flight being delayed causing us to “miss the boat”. We weren’t sure what we were supposed to do once we arrived in Zurich. Friends we were traveling with told us Avalon would have someone meet us to take us to the next port, but we did not receive communication from the boat. Once in Zurich, no one was there. After wandering around for almost an hour and almost getting on the train, someone finally showed up. Heading to our next port we discovered we were responsible for the cost of transportation, over $500. Had we known this before getting in the van, we would have taken the less costly train. Avalon did finally pay for half of the cost. Overall the cruise was nice. The food was very good, service not as good as our other cruise, and the dining room was very noisy. The excursions were nice and the local guides were very knowledgeable. Our overall experience with Avalon was good, but if I had a choice between cruise lines, I would probably go with the other. I saw more on this trip than on any other. The cruise director and crew were great. It would be nice to have a little more transportation through cities. I appreciated attention to our restroom needs. Most of us were older, so that was helpful. The dining was steller. The waiters were attentive and helped in every way. The preparation was excellent and the presentation artful. The captain was very skilled. I couldn't believe how he slipped into those locks without bumping the walls. Most of the time I didn't know we docked. Each port was clean and often had gardens around. The people were friendly and everyone spoke English. They seemed to appreciate my little German and French. Most of the shopping was touristy but we had chances to order lunch and snacks in towns. I enjoyed the historic sites and would like to do even more with museums. Read Less
