My wife and I,her brother and sister and brother in law, decided to take this Rhine river cruise (Basel to Amsterdam) to celebrate my wife's 70th birthday. Cruising was not high on my agenda for likes but after this experience, we are both keen to do more. In early April, we flew from Australia to London and then after a few days to Basel where we joined the cruise. Everything was great - the food (excellent), the cruise director (to the point, humourous and informative), the guides (knew their stuff and added wit and humour), rooms were cleaned regularly and quickly, the bar persons knew their stuff and nothing was too much trouble. The cabin (level 3 panorama) was comfortable and being able to put our suitcases under the bed gave a plenty of room. The bed was very comfortable and having a 7ft sliding window that could be opened gave us the opportunity on occasions to lie on the bed and watch the world go by. The excursions were interesting and informative and we got good exercise by walking around the towns and cities. I certainly benefited from this. Brother and sister in law relished the walking. The boat had around 170-190 people on board with no children and this made the whole atmosphere calm and relaxed - as it should be. The age group was generally average age of around 50-55 with predominantly Americans and Canadians and a few Aussies to sweeten the pot. Dinner was in the dining room with plenty of choices of food and an endless supply of wine and beer. For lunch, you could go to the dining room for more substantial fare or in the lounge area for something light. Overall ambience on board was fantastic. The only negative that I can identify was that the WiFi was poor (and perhaps that the cruise was too short). My wife and I are now converts and are already thinking about another river cruise but perhaps a little longer in duration. We would recommend Avalon to any who are considering a river cruise. Stay away from this one! Viking....ugh. Worst cruise we have ever been on. Drought impacted the river levels and they SHOULD have cancelled the cruise but of course they didn't want to lose the money so they kept it going. Didn't see many of the areas we were supposed to see on the shore excursions. Had to change boats middle of trip. Lengthy bus rides because couldn't get up the river. Minimal water and no food on the bus rides. Boat parked beside train tracks and loud trains rumbling past all night. And of course half the time they wouldn't tell us what was happening; probably because they knew people were getting more and more angry over the course of the trip with the changes to the itinerary vs what we had all paid for. The icing on the cake? Credit vouchers issued for a future cruise to make up for the disaster that was this trip. ...but then when you go to use them you find out that the vouchers aren't valid. Call guest relations and find out that they were "issued by mistake". Why didn't they tell you they were cancelling them? "They were issued due to a system error. We don't advise they were cancelled." So after you think weeelll, maybe I'll use the vouchers and give Viking another try, they show their true colors...that they don't give a flaming, flying furry rat's behind about customer service or doing the right thing. In contrast, a friend is traveling on another cruise line soon. That cruise line listed inaccurate pricing for their beverage package...people booked at the lower price (1/3 of what it should have been). The cruise line sent out a message to passengers advising of the error, and OWNING their mistake. Viking? Own their mistake? Their mistake in a horrible cruise? Their mistake in cancelling vouchers offered in compensation for the horrible cruise? Pfft. So long, Viking. In a world full of competition, you can bet your actions will serve to drive you to the bottom of the industry, where you belong. Read Less

The ship, the cruise director and the crew were all AMAZING! We felt completely pampered by the Imagery II crew. We had everything we needed and more. Our captain and his staff were friendly and professional. We felt very safe in the water. They were always there to greet us as cane aboard too! Our cruise director, Bram, was attentive, personable and knowledgeable. We were rookie river cruisers and he was always there for us! The housekeeping staff were friendly, courteous and professional. Our room was taken care of twice a day while while maintaining an environmentally friendly attitude. The food was amazing and the kitchen staff top notch! The wait staff were our favorite though. We had so much fun getting to know them. They were excellent at their jobs and seemed to be genuinely enjoying themselves. We especially enjoyed Mariya and Richard. Wonderful, hard working young people! Thank you Avalon, we will be back! Read Less

We were extremely impressed by the staff and crew of the Avalon Affinity. The ship may be the oldest in the fleet, but it is not showing it's age. The crew was absolutely wonderful. Meals were top notch and selection of local wines and beer were perfect. The excursions were always entertaining. Much to see in this part of the world. Tour guides were always well spoken and very personable. We highly recommend seeing the Maginot Line when in Strasbourg. It is a sobering reminder of the last world war. Kiril (Entertainer) was great at keeping the energy high in the lounge on nights when we were all tired from exploring during the day. Our only complaint is that it all had to come to an end eventually. I'd highly recommend extending the trip on both ends of the cruise in both Switzerland and Amsterdam. So much to see and experience. "Chapeau" to everyone involved in pulling off such a wonderful cruise. See you next time! Read Less
