Hub and I booked a balcony cabin rather last-minute -- back surgery on his part necessitated us letting go a steal of a deal on Empress of the Seas and rebooking a different trip. We were looking forward to sailing on HAL again, as we appreciate the relative calm on board (we drop the average cruiser age by 20 years when we embark) and had not been on a Dam ship in four years.

My wife and I chose this cruise because of a special promotion and it being a Panama Canal cruise. The ship itself was well maintained and the overall service was good, at best. The Captain and the crew were quite visible during the cruise and friendly. Service in the Lido Market was quite remarkable as compared to the dining room where if you arrived 45 minutes late, you weren't served. This ...
Our family chose the Panama Canal 10 day cruise with Holland American. We had 6 adults and 3 children. We planned this cruise a year in advance.
When we got to Port Everglades in Ft. Lauderdale 2 of us had passport cards and were not allowed to board the ship. The passport cards would not work, so if you are planning a cruise that requires a passport do not get the passport card and note you ...
My wife and I had been planning this cruise for several years to celebrate our 43rd wedding anniversary as well as her completing her PhD.
We had booked an ocean view cabin on Deck #1. We did not find out until out first night that we had a cabin under the B.B.King nightclub! Could someone please explain to me why a cruise line would put passengers in a cabin under a noisy night club!
We ...
We took this 11 day cruise because of excellent experience on the Westerdam a few years ago. This was our "bucket list" trip through part of the Panama Canal. Unfortunately, this is one of the oldest ships in the HA fleet and most passengers complained of the motion sickness which has never bothered us on several cruises before. We observed that by the end of the trip there were at least 20 ...
We like cruising and had the opportunity this year to cruise over Christmas - looking for R&R, we chose the Panama Canal cruise which had a number of sea days.
Staff were always pleasant but it was 50/50 as to whether a request would yield a positive result - perhaps a language problem but it felt more like a management decision to not give staff any discretion in dealing with guests.
The ...
We chose to cruise with Holland America because their advertising would have you believe their standards are superior.
We were able to board fairly early - around noon, I believe, and probably could have boarded sooner, had we been able to arrive earlier.
The saving grace of the cruise was the service - from housekeeping to dining to laundry - those probably benefitting the least, ...
We have been on 15 previous cruises and this one was far and away the worst. We stayed at the 17th Street Embassy Suites in Ft. Lauderdale the night before embarkation and taxied to Port Everglades for a very smooth process of boarding our ship, Holland America's Zuiderdam. Cabin 8063 was clean, comfortable and spacious. The veranda was large with comfortable seating. Our luggage was delivered ...
We took a family cruise on 2/05/16 which consisted of my parents (mid-60's), my sister's family (early 30's with a three year old) and myself and husband (37 & 45). Even my parents said they felt extremely young on this cruise considering it seemed the average age was 85+. We have cruised Carnival, Norwegian and now Holland America, and I will never do another Holland America cruise. The main ...
Having sailed numerous times (over 200 days) on Holland america I think I can safely say they have dropped from a premier cruise line to a mediocre line. Upon arriving I was told that I was only a 3 star Mariner and I could wait with everyone else. Nice remark. I think I saw beef once on the 10 days. The line ha s changed over to pork, lamb, chicken and turkey. It does get old the same ...
