EMBARKATION. It was a breeze at the terminal in Civitavecchia as half of the Zuiderdam’s passengers were staying on from the previous cruise. With no lines, we were processed in minutes. Within 30 minutes boarding was opened and we all headed for the ship to start our adventure. Holland America Lines, Zuiderdam was built in 2002 and holds almost 2,000 passengers. We had traveled on her once ...

This was my first cruise on HAL, after having cruised with Oceania, Princess, Celebrity, Norwegian, and Royal Caribbean. It may not be my last, but were I to do this again, it's not going to be on the Zuiderdam, which needs to go into dry dock in a bad way. Yes, I know it was just there in April, but interior decoration was apparently not on the list. We had cabins 4166 and 4170 (originally ...

This was our first cruise, Holland America Line ms Zuiderdam, 11-NIGHT ADRIATIC DREAM. We booked a Signature Suit, SS, Location: Upper Verandah Deck. Check in was fast and efficient, off to a good start. The suite was a reasonable size with plenty of wardrobe space and a safe. The large bed was five stars, very comfortable. The bathroom was a little old fashioned but OK. The suite was not ...

No guest laundry

I was disappointed to find no guest laundry on the ship. Was on a 32 night cruise, and ships laundry costs very expensive for that amount of time. Loved our verandah suite stateroom. The staff mostly cheerful and attentive. The ships band was amazing. Singers and dancers pretty good as well. Some of the bought on entertainment Average, one of the comedians was embarrassing. HAL merchandise ...

Not the Ship of My Dreams

I hadn't inquired as to the size of the ship, so this is on me. I'm used to the smaller ships. Too many people. I'd meet lovely people and then never see them again. I was berthed in the rear of the ship, and was exhausted by the time I reached the front to disembark. The Exploration Cafe (at first, I couldn't find the library--then was told that it is all part of a larger whole) could only ...

This is an older ship and even though they did remodel , it still needs help ie attention to details. The staff made the boat. Almost all were wonderful . Great smile and attitude . The entertainment was marginal at best. Their shore excursions are pricey and uninspiring .The problem is with HAL . We booked a 22 day Mediterranean cruise only to find out when we boarded that we were on two 11 day ...

Our second trip with HAL did not live up to expectations. Whilst the itinerary was excellent (and the reason we chose this particular ship) there were definite issues on board the ship which had just come out of dry dock. The carpet in our cabin was soaking wet - absolutely disgusting to step out of your shoes onto wet carpet. You would think this would warrant being moved to another cabin, but ...

Our first HAL cruise

We have cruised many times however this was our first time with HAL. Initially we were disappointed as the vessel simply was not ready to sail with many passengers complaining of hot water and toilet issues in their cabins. We personally suffered with lack of hot water for 3 days together with water not draining properly from the shower recess. We finally received the appropriate response from ...

We booked our first cruise after selecting the Holland America 22 day Mediterranean / Adriatic option. We paid our deposit in July 2014 and waited with building excitement. That excitement quickly turned to disappointment as our stateroom experienced several plumbing issues. We had no cold water for the first couple of days and our toilet had intermittent flushing problems. The cold water was ...

HAL; So Much Improvement Is Needed

We took the 22-night Adriatic-Eastern Mediterranean cruise (Rome – Venice – Rome), sailing 14 April, ending on 6 May 2015. As noted by others, this was the first cruise after the two-week dry dock and re-fit, and the ship had a range of serious problems that others have described well. Fortunately our cabin (Oceanview on the Main Deck) did not suffer the shower or toilet problems that others ...
