This was our first-ever cruise, so the Zuiderdam will always be special to us. We did not know what to expect from so many days at sea, but it ended up being the most memorable journey. Embarkation was easy and well-organized and in under 30 minutes, we were allowed to board the ship. We felt quite young on the ship (both of us 41)--my guess is that average age is 65+, but we soon found out that our fellow passengers seemed to drink and party harder than us. :) Our Verandah cabin on Deck 7 (Rotterdam deck) was larger than we expected. Having a balcony in any hotel room is always awesome but we weren't prepared for the balcony experience while onboard a ship, especially a transatlantic where 8 of the 15 nights were at sea. With a table and 2 chairs, there was still plenty of space and it was extra special to have our own private outdoor area to lounge in, feel the fresh air, and watch the all that water. Our stewards were very sweet and personable and cleaned our stateroom twice per day, leaving us chocolates and a new animal towel in the evening. We tried dining alone and with other passengers during the journey, and had good times commingling and hearing stories from other cruisers. (Some telling us we were brave for taking a Transatlantic as our very first cruise experience) Formal dining service was impeccable, menus were well thought out, and the food was generally delicious. The food at the Lido was also good, our only gripe was that the lemonade ran out too quickly everyday. Our favorite activity was simply walking around and discovering different areas of the ship. The pool area was large with many places to relax. The movie theater was a bit small, but they played current titles. Hamish was our cruise director and his “WOO-HOO” after every announcement was strange at first, but something we ended up looking forward to every morning. Overall, we had a fantastic time onboard the Zuiderdam. It’s a beautiful ship with plenty of space, not once did we feel like it was too crowded. The staff did their best to make sure everyone was having a good time and the daily newsletter delivered at night helped you plan out the following day. Read Less
