HAL Alaska-Yukon land-cruise disappoints at many levels

As experienced cruisers on HAL and in Alaska, we looked forward to the 19-day land cruise starting in Vancouver on the Zuiderdam for three nights with 9 days crossing from Skagway through the Yukon to Denali and reboarding the Nieuw Amsterdam for a 7 day southbound cruiseincluding Glacier Bay. Seemed well designed . But HAL did not consider that most of the travelers were over 60 and expected ...

We were a party of 13 cruising together to celebrate my dad's 80th birthday. As told to me my my travel agent I went to the dinning room as soon as we boarded to change our dinner table setting as my agent could only book as high as 8 online, so off I went to change it to 13 , only to be told it was not possible ,they only have tables for 10 , needless to say we had 2 tables one behind the other ...

We are equal opportunity cruisers sailing many cruise lines, ship size, etc. that said we have also always enjoyed the overall excellence of Holland. This cruise was a mixed . First time sailing this class of Holland ship, it felt claustrophobic. Limited outside view as we traversed the ship due to layout. Just felt closed in. Bar service was wanting, as service poor, not set up as out of certain ...

This was my 20th cruise. The first and last on Holland America Line. After a certain number of cruises (about 5) you are able to differentiate what is real value from the crap. This was the most expensive, valueless, cruise I have ever taken. The muster drill was quite unusual. Everyone queued up first in groups by the assigned lifeboats and answered "here" as the cabins were called. It was an ...

To start, this is my 1st online review, but I feel it's important given how people use these services to make vacation choices. This is my 6th cruise and first with HAL and most likely last. When we got to our stateroom it was not made-up and was a total mess. We told the stewards and they promptly dealt with it and the room was well cared for through the cruise. A day in our charge card was ...

Zuiderdam-Not Recommended

We have sailed HAL on all our prior Alaska cruises, we have not had issues with HAL ships, until sailing on the Zuiderdam. HAL is not maintaining this ship. Our cabin was in terrible condition and reminded us of an old cheap motel room. The balcony draperies had broken hooks and would not close all the way, the draperies at the window were turned upward at the bottom and had a pile of dust in ...

My husband and I are both retired and love travelling. Over the past five years we have visited a number of countries by organized land/bus tours, flying and cruising. Last year alone we took cruises to South America, the Greek Islands and Mexico. We usually chose the itinerary and not necessarily the cruise line. We love Alaska having visited mostly by cruise ship but also on our own fly/drive ...

A group of 9 went on the Inside Passage sailing on the Zuiderdam mid September, 2011. From the moment we walked onto the ship things weren't quite right. There was no one to greet us as we embarked. Other passengers got us going the right direction. As we walked down the hallway to our balcony cabin, I was a bit surprised by how dingy it appeared. I told myself that these were just ...

The first criteria was the itinerary. Objective was to visit my daughter who lives in Sitka. This was achieved. How disappointed I was when I first boarded the ship. I expected this to be a first class vessel only to find it very dated & shabby. Although the cabin was acceptable, the rest of the ship was definitely in need of a total overhaul from the common areas to dining rooms to pool areas. At ...

I have always said that if you do not have a good time on your cruise, then it is your own fault. There is so much to do on a cruise ship and so many places to discover that it always pains me to hear people complain. This is the attitude that I took with me on this cruise. Embarkation was painless! I was very impressed with whole process. We got on the ship about 1pm chose to unpack first so ...
