My husband and I along with friends had a wonderful 8 day cruise from Barcelona to Lisbon on the Windstar a couple of weeks ago. It was our friends first time on a small ship, but we had experienced both Sea Dream and the Star Clipper in the past, so had something to compare the experience with. Although we had thoroughly enjoyed our past trips we have to say that this recent trip was our favourite. The staff were exemplary, the food delicious and the accommodations were well appointed with ample storage. Small ships are not for everyone..the entertainment is limited ( although our lounge duo were terrific) and it's more an early to bed early to rise format. However, if you want the intimacy of getting to meet people from all over ( generally North Americans of average age in 60s) you can't beat this small ship. We loved it! Read Less

I chose the cruise for two specific reasons - sailing ship and voyage highlights. Third time on Wind Star, third time did not actually use the sails for sailing power. Per corporate, should not expect the masted ships to actually engage in sailing. Will be a very rare occurrence. Won't bother to book again. Secondly, voyage highlight was to visit Plitvice National Park in Croatia, but then somehow, no such excursion offered. Corporate response: sorry if I felt their marketing was misleading. Final straw - Guest services manager answered my phone and cancelled the delivery of my lost luggage to the ship. I didn't ask her to answer the phone, only charge it since my charging cord was in the lost bag. Corporate says she acted appropriately in answering my phone, and they accept no responsibility for the $150 cab fare I incurred in order to get my bags from the airport. I realize it was a miscommunication on her part with the Croatian caller, but having taken it upon herself to answer my phone, AND inadvertently cancel my luggage being delivered to the ship, I felt Windstar should feel accountable - NOPE. Just hope nothing goes wrong if you book with them. Also, be aware that the excursions are VERY pricey and bus group travel (with all that that entails). I think describing it as "your own private yacht" is a real stretch. I could go on regarding that subject, but my suggestion is just to temper your expectations. It is wonderful to travel on a small ship, but don't expect "private yacht experience" when virtually every schedule is completely out of your control and not necessarily very efficient for the guests. Very nice cruise--great destinations, most notably smaller islands where big ships couldn't go. Kusadasi was wonderful--dinner at Ephesus was spectactular; food utterly unedible, but setting and light chamber music was extraordinary. Three big problems. Fumes filled the second and first decks on Monday--might have been paint, but more likely adhesives or sealant. Terrible, but no one on the ship would acknowledge or explain. Ship's hotel director went down after complaints and ship's doctor was notified, but nothing done. Fumes stayed for two days. Food was mediocre--butter is not a substitute for fresh. We're in Greece and no greek salads, fresh fish. The only fresh food was "sea bass," which is not a term for fresh or supple. It's whatever happens to be around. Finally the constant ship conditioning with electric grinders is not okay. Do it before the season, do it in-between cruises but not when passengers are on deck trying to read. A great cruise marred by perfectly preventing sloth. Sorry Windstar. Not okay. Oh, don't get me started on the sermons whenever we took excursions to monasteries and religious sites. Read Less

The main problem with Windstar, confirmed many times over by other guests onboard, is that their office NEVER responds . If you have an issue, and you will have because they have some serious internal communication issues, forget reaching them by phone, email, mail, or fax. Yes, tried them all. You leave voicemails, they go un-answered. Emails to multiple addresses...forget a response. You fax or snail mail and the result is the same. This company won't even respond to credit card company or Better Business Bureau. Call reservations, hold 30+ minutes ...and get nowhere. There are obvious signs they are cutting back significantly. Water sports equipment that they rave about off back of ship...in sorry shape. Sails they talk about....yeah, right. One main sail had a huge tear in it most of the cruise. Rear sail completely inoperative. Whirlpool and pool is something in dire need of refurbishment. We good go on and on. Expect information before a cruise (boarding time, where?, anything)...forget about it. Its a shame, because the crew is outstanding. This is a company that was in financial trouble only 6 years ago, was bought out by Xanterra - national park concessioner...so you can imagine for yourself the result. Running lodging and food services in some national parks is not maintaining cruise ships. We think, and have said as much to the cruise line, is that they are in financial trouble. Since it is a private company and they don't report financial information like publically owned companies (e.g. Carnival), no way to substantiate it. Be forewarned. As much as we enjoy their crews of the high seas, their land based operation is simply horrible. Any company that doesn't communicate or respond to repeat guests speaks volumes. Accordingly, Windstar is dead to us. Read Less

Rome to Barcelona with stops in Corsica, Sardinia, Elba, Majorica - each island magical with history, ruins, great food, and friendly people. Our cabin was large with efficient storage and bed was very comfortable. We were mid-ship on lower level and felt no rocking at night. High recommend lower and mid-ship room. The food was delightful and customized as per diet restrictions. Seafood buffet was amazing with plenty of lobster, shrimp, and salads. Breakfast on deck in a new port with new views was special. We booked special dinner on back deck, but it was a bit windy and chilly to stay long. The sails were up as much as they could be and was beautiful to see them wave. Weather was ideal and seas calm (except for one evening) and the sea was so calm the stars were a perfect reflection in the water. Romantic to be at the bow watching the island lights and stars. Crew knew our names almost immediately which is impressive. The breakfast crew brought me my cappuccino without asking - perfect. Morning yoga on deck was great. Instructor was knowledgable but was not teaching to the target audience (i.e., no one on our cruise should be doing shoulder stands ON A MOVING SHIP!). I suggest they focus on stretching legs and backs to allow ease of daytime walking. Would definitely travel on Wind Star again. Read Less

This was our second Windstar cruise and it did not disappoint. We had made reservations well in advance and noticed that the price was significantly discounted afterwards. After working with our travel agent, the company came through for us and gave us a refund and cabin credit for the difference. Very classy. We sailed from Athens to Istanbul with our 2 teenage daughters. They were concerned that they were going to be the youngest guests, but it turned out there were several families with teenagers and college aged kids traveling. We crashed at 10pm but they stayed up with their new buddies so everyone was happy. We are a family more interested in the history/archeology/architecture so for us this itinerary was perfect. The food and service were fantastic. Of course the cabins are small and won't have a balcony like bigger ships, but thats the point; you are in a 'yacht' and there are great public spaces to hang out in. We generally made our own plans at the ports of call and there really is no hard sell to go with the packaged tours, but the people that used them were quite happy. We had a dinner on deck that was absolutely magical. Of course we were lucky to have gone before the terrible attack on the Istanbul airport, so the itinerary has now changed. Still, this is a great ship with a committed crew and a company that is focused on customer satisfaction. Read Less

Disappointing end of trip!! The Sea Breeze, the food and the crew were outstanding (Athens to Venice, October 2015) BUT a tour we took in Venice at the end of the trip, supposedly of the little canals, which we feel should have been cancelled due to the weather, time of year (high water levels) and horrible water taxi was not--we paid for one itinerary, got another (a tour of a market and talk about a zucchini--ACK!!!!) and did not get a full refund as we had requested. We sent a certified letter to the CEO and have not had the courtesy of a reply in 2 weeks, despite the Cruise Lines claim to care for its visitors. EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTING!!!!! Never had a problem with the 3 trips we took on Viking.... There were no children on the ship and the outdoor decks weren't used because of the time of the year. The staff was fantastic and the cabins were wonderful--all suites. The food was top-notch. Entertainment was poor, however, as it was a small group and the singer was flat most of the time. I doubt they will continue on for other cruises. Had it not been for the horrible day trip we highly paid for--that was a disaster and which should have been cancelled, we would have been left with much better feelings about Windstar cruises. I might add, another passenger couple who had taken 8 cruises with Windstar, said this tour was an embarrassment and they were horrified it hadn't been cancelled as well. Read Less

Our first trip on Windstar . We have been on the Star Clippers at least 4 times and our Travel Agent suggested this when our trip arrangements could not match . Whilst we we enjoyed the destinations Athens to Istanbul and the Greek Islands the Windstar has some issues. These are old but refurbished boats that have had a " powder puff". The cabins are very nice and well laid out with a nice bathroom, but very noise .we had paid extra to be on the second deck. Not worth it. The Breakfast was very good and the Evening meals had a good choice . However lunch was the same every day and a bit monotonous. One complaint was that they were always trying to "sell" you additions either drinks or shore trips all the time, thus " clipping the ticket" . The cruise seems to be designed to get you on board then to sell sell.it would not be to bad , but wine and drink prices were over the top compared to the quality. We just bought ashore our wine and had Pre dinner drinks in our cabin. We know a lot of other Cruise lines have adopted the same strategy but were disappointed that on recommendations that Winstar would be different. Not so. The Captain was a delight ,very friendly and always up for a chat and an update. However the Cruise Director got the nickname among the passengers as" motor mouth" .Always on the sell and have I got a deal for you! So look at the other reviews ,and balance with these comments. It does not match the friendly small intimate other Cruise Lines are providing in our experience, particularly from a discerning previously travel customer. Read Less
