Not what it used to be!
"We are 4 star mariners and on the first night at 4pm there was an invitation for welcome aboard in the Billboard lounge where a few staff greeted us at the entrance and said welcome back and that was it no mingling or speech saying they appreciated our valued custom. There has been lots of cost cutting in the dining with a lack of fresh vegetables replaced with rice, quinoa and mashed potatoes, there has been very few steaks or lamb unless you now pay extra for them, no scallops or escargot and no baked Alaska so far...."Read More

An average cruise which could have been better

Review for a Asia Cruise on Westerdam

Overall a very mediocre cruise - nothing special Cruised with Holland America 10 years ago and it's not as good then. The points: 1) We were also charged for Crew Appreciation even though our Have It All package booked through IGLU stated this was included. It was only removed after we queried this with Guest Relations, although we did tip the cabin staff personally. 2) During the cruise, ...

Not my favourite, but met most of my needs/wants

My mother and I selected this cruise date / itinerary 12 months before departure. It included Japan and Hong Kong which were key to our travel desires. Let’s start with the challenges. We booked a “Guaranteed Oceanview Room”. Mistake. Should have selected our room at reservation. We were upgraded to a Verandah room directly under the pool deck. The deck scraping at odd hours was not ...

Some hits, some misses

Westerdam is an old ship. It appears that the latest refresh was for the main areas as they were all very nice and clean. The cabin certainly could use a refresh. The bathtub is very shallow so there is no way an adult can take a bath in there. The food was as expected although it appears that the meals in the main dining room have shrunk about 40%. There appears to be less waiters with ...

A bit of a Westerdam disappointment

We had sailed the Westerdam a couple of times before and felt that it was one of the best ships of a very good line. The ship itself is still very good indeed, so why were we disappointed? Alas, just about every staffer we encountered seemed unfamiliar with their job. Standing in line for the front desk, a staffer came out and asked who needed service, but obviously everyone did if they were in ...

Unbelievable access to Hubbard Glacier but not sold on Holland America

This was our 2nd cruise on Holland and 4th Alaska cruise. Last year we were on Royal Caribbean and were in and out of the glacier in an hour. This time we were there for several hours and got to within 1/3 of a mile of the glacier. Lost count of how many times the glacier calved in front of us. Weather for the cruised ranged from the roughest night I have ever had at sea the first night out to ...

This story doesn’t match this ship

There is no BB King blues or Lincoln theater. There’s a rolling stone lounge and a billboard area. The world stage is pretty with truly locally choreographed entertainment. If you enjoy educational seminars along with a few sprinkled activities. If you are looking for quiet and bored. This is your cruise. We loved the thermal spa. The specialty steak house was a disaster as it took 2.5 hours and I ...

Not what was expected

Review for a Alaska Cruise on Westerdam

We chose to go on this cruise (our very first cruise) because it was advertised as an Irish music cruise to Alaska promoted by Gertrude Byrne. We expected, from the title of the cruise, to be treated to true Irish music, along the lines of We Banjo Three and other types of traditional Irish sounds. What we got was primarily American country music sung by Irish bands. We are not fans of most ...

Scenery was terrific, onboard experience was like a Holiday Inn next to a highway

We chose this cruise because we didn't feel up to going to Europe this year. Never having been to Alaska, we felt that the three-hour flight to Seattle wouldn't be too taxing and then a leisurely, relaxing cruise of seven days with no jet lag would be just the ticket. We opted for Holland America to assign our rooms and when, the week before, we were assigned Room we were at first happy. Back of ...

A transpacific cruise with itinery issues and limited food choices - but still relaxing

We wanted to take my MIL and FIL on vacation. Living in Hokkaido their entire life, they'd never been to the USA. We found this transpacific cruise last September and we chose it- my second repositioning cruise; their first cruise EVER. Embarkation - we'd received a message indicating the Inside Passage was now a no-go. Ok, I thought- though beautiful, it wasn't a deal breaker. We got on ...

Our 3rd cruise with HAL has us a bit concerned

We have only cruised 3 times with HAL, however each was 14+ days. We were on the last Asia cruise before Covid, and the 1st one since Covid (ports in Philippines, Taiwan, and Japan). Both on Westerdam. However HAL is down trending for us. Preface: Let me just say that running a cruise is a very difficult thing. Nearly every guest on board has a unique need or request. Staffing turn over ...
