I was looking for a CA based cruise to Mexico during the holidays. I chose this one, because it was 12 days with 8 ports, compared to 3 ports on a 7 day cruise. Also, this one was not so child friendly, there were less than 150 people under 18 on board, and most were teens. We got a really good deal on an oceanview room on lower promendade. I was pretty happy with it. Food not so good. But ...
Back to Back this and Dec. 22. Historical Mexican itinerary. Unfortunately had to miss Rosalina due to winds. A great deal of tendering ports which for many, would be the draw back. As usual great food, and staff exceptional. The combo mix bar for trivia and football days does not work well together. Trivia very well attended. Ship definitely showing its age in many places, but still is ...
I did HAL's Alaskan itinerary out of Vancouver, visiting Juneau, Skagway, Glacier Bay, and Ketchikan. This is an absolutely beautiful part of the world, and definitely well worth it if you're thinking about going. Since I'm in Canada, having the option of departing from a domestic port (thus a domestic flight) is nice.
The Ship: 4/5
The Volendam is one of the oldest ships in HAL's lineup. ...
Bucket list and a .uch needed break! Bonus was returning to Vancouver. We were upgraded from a window G to a larger window cabin 25**. No complaints. Our cabin stewards were terrific and always attended to everything. We both felt at home and after 21 days we hadn't grown tired of the pampering! The Ocean Band was our go to after dinner. And the food! Fabulous! Ate in the dining room, and 2x ...
Get out of the continued long winter in Wyoming. The captain was amazing on communication and informational. Hedro in the Pinnacle was amazing as well. We enjoy the pool, and the DiveIn dining. The Pinnacle Grill is the gem of dining as usual if you enjoy steak and seafood, lamb chops, caviar, carpacio, shrimp cocktail. The surcharge is minimal and very well worth on the items (only a couple) to ...
I have purposely allowed some time to pass before writing this review.
THE SHIP AND STAFF
The review really concerns an apparently struggling cruise line, an aged ship, and a wonderful itinerary. The captain jokingly said it best when after it was mentioned the ship was 23 years old, a passenger asked him what was the effective service age of such a ship. He replied 22 years.
The ship ...
The ports. The ports. The ports. The Price. The line (HAL). These are the things that attracted me to this voyage.
This voyage of 11 weeks was my first cruise with a duration of over three weeks, and that alone turns the experience completely around. You see the same people, passengers & crew, over and over again and you get to know them. That was mostly good. Ran into many ...
After sailing on the Eurodam in March, 2019 on an extended cruise to the south pacific, we were hoping that the Volendam would be an improvement concerning food quality. We were pleasantly surprised and did not have a single issue on the Volendam the entire cruise. We are 4 Star Mariners and have sailed with Holland America for many years and have recently seen major issues with food quality; this ...
You may wonder why I only gave this a 4 star review, when for all the sub-items below I have rated them as 5 stars. The answer is because the ship had just come out of a two week dry dock, and as a result, many cabins, and some hallways had been flooded, and had no hot water or HVAC. One is always warned never to take the first cruise after a refit, and fortunately, I was not significantly ...
My daughter and I booked this cruise wanting some sun and fun and a vacation over a week long. This was great. We know HAL well and her pace suits our needs. We LOVE food, being waited on, quiet time, and a little entertainment. We don't care about lot of drinking and don't want to be onboard with a bunch of screaming kids or drunks. So that did eliminate some cruise lines for us.
This was ...
