We chose this cruise for my husband's 50th birthday. We started in Prague which was on his bucket list & extended in Budapest. We arrived on ship to be whisked promptly to our room. We headed to make our dinner reservations for the week which went super smoothly also and it was perfect we unpacked and then headed to our welcoming entertainment outside of the boat. The river boat is outstanding, the furniture throughout the interior is beautiful, as in the restaurants. There is a shaded area on the upper deck to enjoy sail outs. Comfy sofas at the front of the ship. I never felt like the boat was busy we always walked right in for breakfast and lunch to have a table waiting for us. Don't hesitate if you don't find something on the buffet you can always order something or ask if there is anything else prepared that day you may not realize you can have. A river cruise is busy so be prepared, every port we loved for different reasons & we sometimes left our tour group and did our own thing. Explore, enjoy and make the most of your river cruise. Trip of a lifetime! Read Less

This was our first river cruise but will definitely not be our last. The AMA cruise line is 1st class from the beginning to the end. The crew is so very well trained, the food is delicious and the ship is beautiful. The chef and kitchen crew never disappointed us. The food was delicious and beautifully presented. We ate at the chefs table one night, one word, DELICIOUS. The lounge was big and comfortable. The ship was spotless, someone was always cleaning something. The rooms always had fresh towels, the bed was comfortable and the bedding was clean. The rooms were nicely appointed with WiFi, computer and tv. We had the BEST crew. From the minute we said hello to the hugs and tears when we left, they felt like family. Bojan was our cruise director and Victoria was our cruise manager and they were always happy to help. THE BEST CRUISE LINE!! Read Less

We went on a Backroads biking cruise, and for this purpose a river cruise was great. The AMAWaterways staff was wonderful - interesting, always willing to help, and just generally very competent. I can't say enough - the staff made the trip. It's a small ship, and they did the best with what they have. The music was great, the facilities were spotless, and they had a decent selection of fitness classes which is nice because the exercise room is pretty minimal (2 people max, bike and treadmill). Logistics were great. The food was very "American" - no local cuisine. That's a shame because the countries traveled on this cruise had fantastic food. That said, it was plentiful and of good quality and fresh, and while a bit on the bland side for my tastes, there were a lot of choices, and the service was great. Having a local option would have been nice. The wine choices were limited but excellent - better than average for a cruise. The exercise guy had a lot of classes, and there were a lot of excursions and walking tours. The top deck has chairs and a bar which is nice for viewing. Read Less

We chose Amawaterways after reading some very positive critics about food and excursions on their ships. On Amaviola, food was fair but not exceptional compare to other cruise lines but "La table du chef", once by cruise, deserve congratulations. For excursions , it's true that choices were varied for every kind of people, young and older ones even with bike rides offered. What bother us the most on this cruise was general atmosphere with a lot of american's families getting together with grand ma et grand pa and not attending at all at cultural shows presented on the ship ....8-10 persons on a cruise of 150 persons for listing a french signer at Strasbourg, every body was on sun deck instead....it was pitiful! The night after, ship canceled show supposed to be presented !!! A separated club of 45-50 cyclists was on this cruise and may be this separated group changed atmosphere on the ship ! I don't know ! Also, service was average in room, bar and restaurant nothing too bad but nothing too good also. At bar, we were running to get drinks at tables, we were obliged to go the the bar counter .At front desk, smile wasn't included also.! On the upper deck or sun deck with a little pool very attractive and useful, under 35C weather, no service at all during all week with one exception to offered us once German coffee! We cruised twice before on Avalon's ships ( Danube and Seine rivers) and the personal was more joyful, friendly, service was better and food as good as on this Amawaterways cruise, member of Chaîne des Rôtisseurs For the river and cities to visit , it was amazing and we recommend this cruise with what companies you like but not necessary with AMA. For arrival and departure at ship and airports ....wow...exceptional personalized service and for that AMA deserves congratulations. We know that AMA can't be responsable of participation of their clients on a cruise but for those who want more joyful cruises, look before at what kind of people ships companies try to attract. May be we were only back lucky and AMA can offer more friendly cruises . Read Less

We chose this cruise because of Backroads. We were doing the biking/river cruise trip and felt that unpacking once on a ship and not having to think of where to get meals, etc would be a good decision. Backroads and their guides were amazing and wonderful. The AMASonata and its crew were beyond our wildest dreams. I have never been more pampered, offered so much amazing food and drink, and been provided with every imaginable form of entertainment. From the Captain right through to Ali our housekeeping staff member, we were impressed and incredibly pleased. Wei-Ler our cruise concierge was everywhere all of the time, doing anything and everything to make our trip more exciting and seamless. We recommend this trip, whether you do it with the Backroads biking or just do the cruise, very highly. In fact, it was the best trip we have taken in our entire lives. Thank you one and all on the AMASonata for this trip of a lifetime. Read Less

This was our first river cruise after 15+ ocean cruises, primarily on Celebrity, Seabourn, and Oceania. Overall a great cruise, so much in fact we are planning to do another river cruise on AMA next year. Positives: All inclusive (except gratuities) no crowds/lines on board - about 150 passengers. Easy on and off every time. very good food (we are food lovers!) Beef not as good as fish, however (Europe not known for their beef). Great deserts, baked goods, fresh fruit, plenty of choices. The meal at Chef's table was fantastic. Tours were groups of 10-15 and the guides were very good. The scenery was spectacular and The ship is beautiful and in great shape. The service was a high point - just outstanding. No real negatives to mention. There are some differences between ocean and river cruising (none which I consider negative, just different), but we enjoyed the cruise tremendously - can't wait to do it again. Read Less

I can't say enough about our trip on AmaWaterways where else can you see 4 countries and lots of villages and cities in a week. Not sure where to start. My friend and traveled to Europe for the first time together. Both of us give everything 5 stars. neither one of us had one complaint. the staff was amazing, the ship is beautiful, the food and wine was over the top fantastic. They weren't stingy with the food or wine. Loved the wines form Austria, Hungary they served daily. Our cruise director Veronika was amazing. we commented among ourselves several times, "wow she works hard and doesn't miss a thing" Always there, smiling nice, her talks about the cruise, the ship, the region was so interesting and educational and fun. the waiters, cleaning staff cooks, captain any and all the rest were super great. enjoyed all of them. Our room was taken care of while we ate breakfast. the excursions were all excellent we loved everyone. the local guides were all great. the bus transportations were spotless, some had wi fi. the on ship enetertaiment was just perfect. the daily piano player was real good, they had an Austrian night song and dance performance, ad Hungarian night was real great. gypsy musicians, hunagrian dancers men and women. fantastic. our first night October fest was fun. great beer and prezles, german music. Can you tell I loved everything? Then even arranged for a vn to my hotel in Budapest. loaded my luggage and checked to make sure we were on and said good by. such service. thank you all, hope to see you again Read Less

Single Canadian traveller; AMA partnered with Canadian Automobile Association travel services to remove single supplement cost of $2500 on most cruises, plus offered numerous credits as well. Huge incentive for me. Two year old ship was spotless inside and out; excellent customer service; good quality amenities in room, bottle of wine and chocolates plus beautiful limited edition shawl. Very very organized at each port, excellent guides plus numerous shore excursions. Provided with a colour print out nightly on the history of the next port stop plus very detailed itinerary. Dining room 5 star calibre, food was exquisitely presented at dinner. Excellent breakfast and lunch buffets; regional wine and food at every stop plus a daily cocktail hour. I only wish spa services like a manicure/pedicure would have been nice. I will definitely recommend this company and I hope to travel with them again. Never felt alone, was taken care of at each step, even at arrival in Prague and disembarkation in Budapest, an AMA staff was with me the whole time. Truly wonderful experience overall. Read Less

My husband and I have done about 5 other cruises but never before have we experienced a river cruise. I selected AMA after reading reviews on Cruise Critic. Every step of the way was carefully choreographed. We were met in Munich as soon as we excited the airport. We were chauffeured to the ship and when we arrived embarkation was a matter of minutes. So different from a huge cruise ship. There were 150 passengers and most were friendly. AMA's cruise director, Camille, did all she could to make everyone feel welcome. She inspired a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. She was efficient, announcing various events and very good at getting people to participate. The food was wonderful, often in keeping with the area we were entering. The chef's table was not to be missed. The ship itself was very elegant lacking the glitz of cruise ships. Everything is included; all excursions, food, wine and beer and signature cocktails every evening. There were no photo shoots, no dress up nights, no barely talented entertainment. The atmosphere was relaxed and comfortable. It was not at all difficult to be by yourself. . In other words, there were enough areas that crowding was never an issue. The only downside with a river boat is that it is not unlikely to have a ship tied along side so use of the balcony is difficult. Other than that, everything was fantastic even the size of the bathroom! There were many choices in excursions and the pace of them. There were bikes available. A river boat can get right up to the town so if you are docked there overnight you can come and go easily. The entertainment varied with the port. We had nights of incredibly talented musicians. I would book another soon. Read Less

Very port intensive with a great selection of ship excursions and the ability to go it on your own. Service was great and Camille Dernis, our Cruise Director, was the best ever. Were overnight in many ports so had the option to enjoy the ship’s dining room or find a restaurant in town to get more of a local flavor. Everything with AMA was fabulous. The boat was very comfortable with a large lounge room, a nice dining room, and a huge outside upper deck with plenty of lounges and chairs as well as a small pool with a swim up bar. Staff was friendly and helpful. Food and drink was plentiful throughout the cruise. The rooms had huge glass windows and you could lie in bed and watch the passing landscape. Local wines and food were offered throughout the trip. Our week went to quickly but we have a lifetime of memories cruising from Vilshofen to Budapest. Read Less

AMAWaterways provided the perfect experience for us and our friends to enjoy a vacation in Europe together! We were 4 couples from all over the US. We wanted time to visit and party together but also have time to persue our own interests. Personally, this was our third AMAWaterways River Cruise in two years. We have enjoyed the Seine and the Mosel, Rhine and Main previously. The "floating hotel"/ship was fantastic. Our room was comfortable and spotless. The food was award-winning and always delicious. We seemed to eat continuously. The crew was superb, friendly and culturally diverse. The excursions were delightful! They thought of everything, thank goodness!! The local guides were top notch. Entertainment on board included an in-house musician who played the piano beautifully. Local entertainers were quality vocalists, musicians, and folk dancers. Fun, fun, fun!! The only problem any of us could think of was it was just 7 days long. Read Less
