It was our 25th wedding anniversary present to each other. We decided on a river cruise and always wanted to do a Viking River Cruise. With all the was included and nothing for us to do but show up at the airport, Viking was top notch all the way. We NEVER worried about anything as they took care of everything for us. From the second we arrive, we felt like family from the beginning. Every day seemed to be better than the last until we finally had to say good-bye. The final evening in Budapest was one of the best spectacle we had ever seen with the city lit up along the river. Every tour and guide were top notch and the buses were clean and owned by viking themselves. The cabin was perfect and the Villi/Mimir was hands down the best ship we saw along the river. If we ever get the chance again, we will be doing another Viking River Cruise! Worth every cent! Read Less

We chose it due to it being a smaller cruise ship and seemed to be adult oriented. It surpassed my expectations. Food was great, service was top notch and the right amount of excursions with the tour. Will be doing it again. We did the two day pre-excursion in Amsterdam. It was a fantastic City. All cities and areas visited were a great experience. Didn't enjoy Budapest. However that was at the end of the trip and it seemed like the ltast attractive place we visited, but it was still good. Favorite was Vienna. Such a wonderful place. We attended a Mozart concert there and are some Mozart chocolate. Merek our cruise director was excellent. Took very good care of us while on excursions. The whole staff was excellent, they even remember you names. It was a pretty cool feeling having them address you by name. Will be doing it again. Read Less

Danube River cruise with Viking- I recently took a Viking river cruise, the Danube Waltz with other adult family members. The weather was perfect so we enjoyed the sun deck on the ship and our outdoor time in respective ports. A cruise can be a great way to explore a new area without having to arrange for your own tours or transportation. However, there are a couple of things to be mindful of: River boats are often docked together in port so often your views are completely blocked by another boat and the fumes from the idling boats are noxious. River boats are tiny- our small stateroom would not have fit anyone over about 5 ft 9 or anyone overweight The lower staterooms have some funky smells at times and can feel cave-like when docked in a port Riverboats have no Dr. onboard- passengers must go into port for any medical attention The Viking included tours are very general and buses are packed. Little time to visit places like museums, etc. with this type of travel. AirFrance held a strike on our day of departure, we were packed into another airline and missed 6 hours in Prague. The Viking selected hotel had no bureaus for unpacking, you will live out of a suitcase and could have a very old room or bathroom (ours was circa 1986). The needs of the elderly or immobile are not adequately meet with Viking River cruises. No access to sundeck via elevator or a lift. No room service for folks who can't make it to the one meal time seating. The tour operators were clueless about the meaning of "incapable" of walking and immobile guests had to make own arrangements to return to the ship if they could not walk back. The lack of understanding for easy access was also evident with hotel concierge in Prague. She put us at a restaurant that required walking over a bridge and down some stairs. My guest fell. She also fell during one of the Viking excursions and fractured a bone. Buyer beware before booking a river cruise- allowing others to make arrangements does not always lead to the best travel experience. I trust my own skill in arranging the best accommodations and excursions rather than relying on a corporate formula for what they have negotiated. Read Less

I am Canadian and my cousin is American. We have met up at various places on the globe, as a way of seeing each other, as well as enjoying an adventure together. We chose to cruise on the Danube, as neither one of us had ever been on a river cruise and we hadn’t visited several of the cities that the cruise stopped at. As far as which cruise line to chose goes, that was an easy decision as we had heard wonderful things about Viking. After our cruise was over, I read that Viking was chosen as the Number #1, river cruise line, by Conde Nast. I have only wonderful things to say about Viking, so I can easily see, why it would be an award winner. Our room was comfortable, the meals were excellent!! If I had to list my favourite thing of my experience, I would have a difficult time to chose just one thing. I loved how organized each stop was and how it took less than a minute to get off the boat - there was no 20 minute line up to get off, which is common on ocean cruises. I also loved how I knew which bus to get on as soon as I stepped ashore. I loved how each port had a free city tour. I loved that all the day tours were graded for diffulty, as mobility was an issue for my cousin. To add to my point of disembarkation being easy at each port, I want to add that going to all of the meals, lectures and entertainment venues were equally easy. There were no line ups, there was no waiting, it was all very relaxed and civilized. I could go on and on. I would highly, highly recommend a river cruise with Viking for anyone. Go and have to time if your life!! Read Less

We initially chose to cruise at Thanksgiving because Viking was offering great deals. But we quickly fell in love with the Christmas markets in each town and village. We picked up Christmas gifts of glass, and wood and ceramics. We drank way too much gluwein and loved it. There was a particularly good art museum in Lintz just off of the place where we docked. We were also completely wowed by the Viking service and the beautifully appointed suite. We quickly made friends and had lovely evenings with good food and entertainment. The program directors made sure everyone knew where they were going and took great care of everyone. The wait staff were incredibly friendly, too. We particularly enjoyed Bratislava, which was small, but had some great local shops where we found some really good whisky. We were especially surprised by the evening arrival into Budapest which was an amazing show of the lights of the city. We tacked on three extra days in Budapest which gave us time to really see a lot of the city. We were so touched by the bronze cast shoes by the river representing the 60,000 Jews from Budapest that were killed during WWII. I would definitely do this cruise again! Can't stop thinking about the Christmas markets. Read Less

We chose this cruise partly because Viking sponsors Public Television in our area. We enjoyed watching the beautiful scenery depicted on the commercials. Someone in my family had also been on this cruise and had a great review of it. The cruise was wonderful. The cruise experience, itself, was enjoyable. We had never been through locks on a ship. The places we visited were great and the crew was spectacular. The food was top shelf and the waiters went out of their way to please you. We tried to get the same waiter each night because he knew our names after the first day and took great care of us. My wife and I were celebrating our fiftieth wedding anniversary on this cruise, that is why we choose this time of the year to make our trip. We met some interesting people and made some new friends. Our cabin was well taken care of and was perfect for us. We enjoyed the outside veranda. The rest of the crew went out of their way to assist us with any difficulties and made the cruise even better. Their was nothing negative about the trip and we were extremely happy with our choice. We hope to take another Viking cruise in the future, Read Less

We decided on Viking Cruise Line after reading their brochures. Everything was first class on this cruise - rooms, housekeeping, dinners, wait staff, tours and tour guides, and activities. At dinner we always tried to get a table in Ron and Rico's section because they were so nice and attentive to every detail. The food was great and you had many options to choose from. Most of our tour guides were excellent and very personable. Overall, they were all very good and very informative. All the tours were very well organized. We joined all the included tours, but there were other options if you wanted to do more. Housekeeping was excellent. It seemed like every time you left the room and came back, you could tell she had been there freshening up. We enjoyed the on board entertainment and activities, and even if we didn't join in, we watched on the lounge camera. I never imagined the scenery would be so beautiful along the rivers! This was a trip of a lifetime! We would definitely like to take another Viking Cruise! Read Less

Started in Amsterdam pre boarding and enjoyed the city on our own. We had heard so much positive information about Viking and this tour that we anticipated a wonderful experience. The biggest disappointment was the dining room and the food. Service for all guests at same time (7:00) took over two hours. The room was so incredibly noisy I found myself yelling to be heard. I would think that anyone with hearing issues or aids would find this room to be uncomfortable and impossible to carry a conversation. The staff mentioned that the portions were small because people had complained about too much food being served. Well, there is a difference between small portions and tiny. I realize you can request more food, but after tasting the offerings I was not interested in more of the same. Finally started asking for vegetables. If any were served on the entrée, a few carrots, half a stick of asparagus. Extra veggies consisted of a bowl of carrots, no seasoning with maybe a few peas. I gave up and ate bread and ice cream, which was quite good. The fruit plates I though would be a savior. Not to be. No variety. One fruit per plate, a bunch of grapes, an apple, a pear sliced. I reviewed your recipes on line and wonder what ship those dinners are served on, certainly not on the Vili. Toward the end of the trip we started using the outside sundeck area where a limited selection of food was available and usually cold. The majority of food was over-cooked, inedible and frankly terrible. Read Less

Viking is an excellent river cruise company. The staff is excellent in that they have thought about things that you didn't even know you might need! The food was delicious, the bar was well stocked And if you want to make sure that the ship will have your favorite drink, you can call customer service at least a month ahead of your sail date and tell them what you will want them to have on hand. The tours were all great and the program director was very knowledgeable. We had our flights arranged through Viking and everything was taken care of by Viking. It was really nice to know we would be met at the airport by Viking representatives and to be taken back to the airport by them. This was our fourth cruise with Viking and we would love to sail with them again. All of our cruises have been wonderful and we have met many couples that we still stay in touch with. Read Less

Loved it! The website and the information package that was sent to us was very useful in helping us plan our trip. We spent 5 days in Amsterdam before the trip and fell in love with the city. Embarkation went smoothly once we figured out exactly where to find the ship. The ship was beautiful and our stateroom was fantastic and had all the amenities we could possibly want. Food and drink were excellent and plentiful and was a great way to meet people. On board entertainment was great and included a number of games, a glass blowing demonstration, an opera concert, and several very interesting lectures. The shore excursions were extremely well organized and were very informative and lots of fun (I would highly recommend the beer tasting extra excursion in Koln). The electronic "Quiet Vox" devices that were used during the excursions enabled the guides to communicate through the earphones without the guide having to shout to be heard by all. The entire crew was outstanding and often went above and beyond to help in any way they could. I would definitely cruise with Viking again! Read Less

Our state room was excellent, the food was superb and the service was outstanding. our maid and waiters could not have been better. The tours and the tour guides were great. Great selections of the visited cities, especially Vienna. The night cruise of Budapest was an extra added bonus. The entertainment was fun and the evening games, dancing was lots of fun. The crew from the Captain down was accessible and we felt comfortable to talk to them, ask them questions. We are looking forward to our next cruise. We are looking at another river cruise. Somehow, we all agreed, it was great to be on a small ship. We got to know other people and the crew. Everyone we have talk to, we highly recommended this cruise. Read Less

A small river boat from Budapest to Amsterdam. City tours every day, river cruise every night. Incredible staff, better food, and luxurious accommodations. I got an understanding of the history or the river valleys, the castles, the monasteries, the Prince Bishops and the stages of the agriculture, the wars, the religions, and economies over 2000 years. Detail: Embarkation and debarkation - The crew took care of everything. All we had to do was walk on board. Ship: 200 staterooms, three dining areas, rooftop lounge and walking track. Dining: Three gourmet meals a day, each spread over a wide time band, running into each other. Snacks and coffee/tea all the time. Often the lunches and dinners were themed, with excellent food based on where we were travelling. Local wines in abundance. Just when I was wondering how they could improved as the trip had five days to go, they went all out for a series of incredible meals. Entertainment and activities - Onboard, music and culture, electronically showing pictures reliving the day. Offboard, several trips every day with varying levels of effort, showing the best each city or region had to offer. Service - Sublime, personal, from new friends. Ports and excursions - We hit all the big cities, castles and monasteries, with great local guides pointing out their favorite points and the importance of what had happened. Also remember a trip to a family vineyard and wine bottling and selling operation, excellent in-town food, souvenirs and just time to ramble in town, waving to the ship staff going the other way in a small alley. We are already planning another viking cruise or two, probably Portugal and the Baltic Read Less

I chose this cruise due to a broad experience of several countries. I found the crew very good, attentive and engaging. The room was kept very clean. The chef out did him self with good variety, fresh fruits. The meals were too good and my scale at home showed that I enjoyed the culinary experience too much. I enjoyed the excursions very much, knowledgeable local guides. I like that we had ear buds so you could hear the guides and not have to push in to hear. The optional excursions were affordable and allowed us to get a local experience. I did the Mozart concert, the Hungarian horse show and tried to waltz. Enjoyed this cruise so much I talked my mom into going with me next year. Going from Bucharest to Budapest. We are taking the extra trip to Prague. This past cruise I did the extra time in Amsterdam and Budapest. Really pleased with how we were looked after. Picked up at the airport, given a city tour, and someone to help with what to do, where to go and even arranging the tickets for us. Read Less

My sister-in-law recommended it. The staff was excellent. The food was always wonderful and I loved the chef! I had no complaints. The Viking crew worked hard to make sure everything was great for us. I only had one complaint about the tour guide during our excursion to Schonbrun Palace. She went so far ahead of us, talking about things in one room, when we were in another room because of the crowd! To make it worse, the chef announced a spontaneous trip to the market that guests could go on but since we had booked the excursion, we didn't go. If we had known that was an option, we would have gone with the chef. The cabin was great and room service excellent. We enjoyed the nightly activities. I especially liked the glass blower demonstration. Overall all our excursions were great. I felt I was on a history tour! Yes, we are definitely going on another cruise! Read Less

For my Mother and I this was our first river cruise. We traveled on the Villi from Budapest to Amsterdam. We so enjoyed our trip. The staff on the boat were very nice and helpful. The food was great. The ports and tours all were fun. I was probably one of the youngest on the ship being in my mid 50's. The second we arrived at the ship the wonderful service started. The staff took our luggage and we had lunch and explored the ship as we waited for our cabin. The cabin was small as expected but had enough space for all our things. The cabin was very clean and nicely appointed. There was enough closet space with shelves and drawers to keep all our things organized. The bathrooms heated floors were a nice touch. The food on the ship was fabulous! Every meal had so many choices. There were also choices of where to eat. In the front of the ship was a small informal dining area that you could get all your meals at. This was nice if we wanted to sit outside to enjoy the weather, or just see the country side as we were going by. The main dining room was large and you could pick where to sit. Big windows on both sides of the dinning room made it nice to see out. The food was very good with lots of choices. The wait staff were very accommodating and extremely efficient. We enjoyed the ports and excursions. Every evening there was an itinerary for the next day waiting for us on our beds. For our excursions we were broken up into smaller groups...about 10-12 and assigned a guide. We had audio boxes with ear buds so we could all hear the guides. This was very nice because we could look around while the guide was speaking. The local guides we had were very knowledgeable and easy to understand. A couple of times in the beginning we weren't sure of the time or place to meet back up to get back on the ship, but this was better as the cruise went on. I loved the sun deck (on top), however it was closed a good portion of the trip because of low bridges. This cruise is geared toward less active people. I did find time at some ports to get out and run. Disembarkation went very smoothly. The staff had everything very organized. I would recommend this Trip. The length of the cruise was nice I think a week would be too short. Overall a great experience and can't wait to go on another Viking river cruise and see another part of the world. Read Less
