We'd always fantasized about what it would be like to actually go on a Viking Cruise after seeing the wonderful ads on PBS. Could it really be that picturesque? Would the meals really be that good? Would the shore excursions really be as idyllic as it looked in the ads? Yes. The cruise was lovely (we had great weather, too). The crew could not have been more accommodating and more interested in our experience. My wife wanted a softer bed. Yeah, sure - we're on a boat dear - that's unlikely to happen. The people who took care of our room were able to provide additional cushion on her side of the bed - (how did they know which side she slept on?) These people are magicians. My wife and I must both eat a gluten free diet. In many cases, restaurants would say - well, you can have a salad then. Not on a Viking cruise. We had gourmet meals, specially selected for us in a private consultations every morning. On at least one night our dining companions wanted to know what we were eating - it looked so good to them! If you are wondering if the price will be worth the experience - don't hesitate. These people know what they are doing and they execute - flawlessly. We will take another cruise with Viking - the hard part is deciding which one to choose. Thank you to everyone at Viking! Read Less

I've seen the advertisements on TV for many years. I've been cruising pretty regularly since 2010 and just became more and more intrigued. So I did some research and it confirmed Viking was one of these best companies. Everything was so simple and easy. From booking it to transportation to getting on and off the ship, all easy. The ship was amazing. Definitely much, much smaller than the larger cruise ships I'm used too, but none of the crowds. The staff was superb. Food was great and the excursions were awesome! I mean you pull over to parks to downtown areas, etc...and everything is right there! And you learn SO much from the tour guides!!!! Wow, my wife and I were blown away. We'd do it again in a heartbeat and in fact, we are, because we are looking at doing a another Viking cruise within the next two years, possibly to Italy this time. On this last cruise, we did the Danube and we went to Munich and Passau, Germany, Linz and Melk, scenic cruise thru Wachau Valley, Durnstein, Krems, and Vienna Austria, and Budapest, Hungary. The worst part of the trip? Staying on the airplanes for so long, but seating was comfortable and Lufthansa's food is EXCELLENT! The tour groups are generally small so you can ask personal questions of the guides. Where comfortable shoes because you WILL do a lot of walking. And generally, if it's hot, when you come back, you'll want to change clothes so think about your clothing or getting them laundered on the ship. My wife and I are African American and we were the only ones on the cruise ship. We had zero issues with any staff, other travlers, or at any places we visited. I only share thata because I've had other friends ask me. Everyone is helpful and friendly. We celebrated our 50th anniversary with the Danube River Cruise. We left from Budapest and after a long night/day of traveling, it was nice to get to the boat and relax in the lounge. fWe couldn't have asked for better weather - everything was perfect. The crew on the Vilhjalm was excellent; they went out of their way to make sure you had everything you needed. Our stateroom was always clean - towels and supplies restocked every day. Everyone - the captain, the chef, the concierge, the program director, the bartenders and waiters, the musician were wonderful! Our waiter knew our names after the second day - great customer service! We took advantage of most of the optional shore excursions and all the included excursions (that didn't conflict with anything else). The local guides were amazing - it was very nice that they were all (at least) bilingual. It was a nice touch to have the chef and his helpers at the door upon returning from an excursion, with some little treat. We definitely are planning another tour with Viking, but it is hard to choose which one next! Read Less

The ship was very new and it looked like it. The staff was very helpful. The food was excellent! Just a wonderful trip. We started in Budapest. We had a few nights in a Hotel and then a couple of days on the shop (in Port). So we saw a lot of the city. We could have easily spent a few more days there. The embarkation from Budapest was spectacular. The ship cruised up and down the Danube through the city several times. By the last time the sun had set and the town was completely lit up. It was beautiful. One of the best embarkations we're experienced. We've always dined with the same people for our entire cruise. We thought we would not like eating with different folks every night, but were surprised at how much we enjoyed the change. Read Less

I chose this cruise to celebrate my wife's 90th Birthday IN STYLE. The 2 for 1 price with air included and an included shore excursion in each port plus a free booze pkg. sealed the deal! As first time Viking longboat river cruisers we really did not know what to expect. We have cruised the Med. the Caribbean, Alaska, Eastern & Western Europe on the BIG cruise liners and wanted a more restful and peaceful experience. We got that with Viking. We had done land tours of Europe, The British Isles, Australia & New Zealand so we were familiar with the city tour concept and like it. As elder travelers, early to bed suited us fine, and we did not feel obligated to do any after hours activities. We had been to Vienna on a previous tour of Europe and were thrilled to see her in all her BEAUTY again. We were at the Gottweig Abbey on Sunday and my wife was able to attend Mass there which was an unexpected and welcomed surprise. The Cesky Krumlov Walking tour was the Treasure described in the brochure PLUS. Great side trip into the Czech Republic. The absence of children provided a much more relaxing atmosphere than I had thought. If and when we again have the ability to join Viking, WE WILL!! Read Less

We chose this cruise because it visited five countries. The experiences in each country was unique and very educational. The tour guides gave personal stories, many about coming to freedom from Communism. Over and over again, I realized how blessed we are to live in a free country. The ship's crew were always very attentive. Small perks were given that we didn't expect which made the cruise more enjoyable. Upon returning from one of Passau's tours, the crew offered hot cider when we boarded ship. This was very welcome because the day was very cold and raining. We liked the open seating for dining. We met many new people and enjoyed their stories. The onboard entertainment was lively and fun. It was hard to pace myself during meals because everything was delicious, and I wanted to experience the local food based on the port we were in. Ports and shore excursions were very educational and fun. We liked having a lot of time in port so we could explore on our own after the excursion if we wanted to. This is quite a contrast to the previous ocean cruise we took. We have another cruise booked for this year and another booked for 2019. Can't wait to see more new countries, experience the culture and the warmth of the people. We definitely want to try a Viking Ocean cruise as well. Having 150 (river) to 930 (ocean) people on board is much more pleasant than fighting 5,000. Read Less

We have wanted to do a Viking Cruise for a long time, but are not very good at planning things in advance. In March 2017, on a whim, we called a Viking Rep and asked what was available for the summer, with some details of what we would like. The Romantic Danube trip was available with the cabin level we wanted, and with the option for upgraded air travel. We also added three days in Prague to our trip. The booking process was painless, an information about the trip abundant...we knew exactly what we would be doing everyday. To our surprise, two weeks before departure, we were advised by Viking that our cabin had been upgraded to the Explorer Suite...the top of the line! While we would probably been very comfortable in our original cabin (a level down from Explorer), the larger suite with all the extra amenities, was unbelievable! The crew, food, tours...everything was awesome. We will definitely be doing another river cruise soon! Read Less

This was our second Viking Cruise. We did the Rhine Getaway in 2015. We enjoy the great food and open dinning concept. It allows you to meet more people and not be tied to the same table each meal. The daily shore excursions are very well planned and cover the highlights of each city stop. The guides are very knowledgeable. We enjoy the small tour group concept and the portable head sets allow you to hear everything the guide is saying. We also enjoy the opportunity to stay in town and enjoy the local fare instead of returning to the ship for lunch. Viking offers many optional excursions that ensure you will get to see as much as possible in each port. The concept of the leisure group concept allows fellow passengers who have handicap issues to enjoy the shore excursions a slower pace and still see all the highlights. I would recommend Viking to anyone who wants to see the world and get the best value for their money. We have already booked our next Viking Cruise for 2018. We met lovely people on the cruise and have booked another. Service good, really liked the excursions so much. All well thought out. Staff on boat very pleasant and helpful. Would have loved more more in Budapest and Vienna. Next time we will spend more time in those cities. The breakfasts and lunches were the best, some dinners were not as great. Needed more time in Chesly Krumlov, maybe a boxed lunch would have given us more time to walk around there. We were also not able to dock directly in Passau, so that was a bit of a problem. Hopeful our next cruise won’t have some of these minor issues. Again. Staff very helpful pleasant and nice. Local guides were all good. Looking forward to next cruise Read Less

Friends who made a couple of Viking River Cruises highly recommended us to cruise on the Viking cruise line. We had made several (7) Ocean Cruises on Royal Caribbean with them and they wanted us to enjoy this new and intimate experience on a smaller vessel. Most of our cruises on RCI were 3500 and above passengers where this one was only 190! The cruise itinerary for us was perfect for although we have traveled extensively throughout Europe we had never been to Budapest nor Prague. Learned a lot about why communism and those behind the Iron Curtain during the Cold War were so affected by not being able to live freely. The Viking was very clean and support staff were very professional seeing to our every need. It was service with pleasure from embarkation to disembarkation. Our Crew was excellent and we had a great Tour Director (Edina) and Hospitality Director (Mariana). Superior experience and great trip down the Danube! Read Less

We chose this cruise based on the diversity of countries we would experience. We began with a 3-day pre-cruise stay in Prague. Prague is a welcoming city offering beautiful architecture, landscape and historical sites. All arrangements were handled by Viking and went seamlessly. We especially enjoyed the coach ride through the country side from Prague to Passau Germany, where we boarded the Viking Vilhjalm. Our excursions were easily booked through Viking and were excellent. The Terazin tour was a somber, but touching experience. Highlights of the trip for us were Chesky Kromlov, Vienna, and sailing into Budapest seeing the city in lights. The crew aboard the Vilhjalm are friendly and attentive. The tour director shared personal stories of life while under Communist regime. This cruise was very enlightening in terms of gaining information and insight into the lives and struggles of persons who endured the effects of WWII. Viking longships are the perfect size. They offer care and comfort. The cuisine is local to the country you are in and is excellent. Viking staff know and display excellent customer service. This means of travel takes away the worry of travel to a foreign country. You are free to relax and enjoy the beautiful people and surroundings while experiencing the best possible cultural journey. I am not fond of large ocean cruise ships, but have always wanted to try a river cruise. I had always heard that Viking was THE way to go -- and now, I know all those people were right. It is probably the most relaxing experience I have ever had. Additionally, staff aboard the ship was so very attentive and made everyone feel so totally welcome; they remembered names, your favorite or regular drink for dinner and/or at the bar, and we're always willing to help or offer extra information. The "Meeting" in the bar every day just before dinner to receive information on the next day's schedule, weather forecast, and activities was a plus -- and there was always time for questions! The cabin, the personal service, and the superb meals filled every desire. The shore excursions were well planned, providing lots of information in groups that were always kept to aa easily manageable size. It was such a grand experience, that two months after my return, I booked another Viking River Cruise for next spring. Read Less

We chose this cruise because it was going to all the places we wanted to go. We had such a wonderful experience on our first cruise we decided to try another. The pre and post stays were in cities that we have always wanted to see. The shore excursions were also things we wanted to see and do. Let me begin with a very unpleasant beginning with the initial booking. When I initially booked the trip I told the Viking representative that this was a 50th anniversary celebration cruise. My wife and I were married in Italy in 1967 when I was assigned to the Italian Air Force. Our daughter was born in Italy in 1968. Upon booking I asked if it was possible to have a small cake and champagne on the cruise. The representation said congratulations and said they Viking would provide both at no charge. I thought that was extremely thoughtful and thanked her. During our initial booking I also scheduled a pre cruise in Prague and a post in Budapest. I was given the price and I said it was fine and booked it. As our cruise date grew closer I went online to check and make sure all was in order. At that time I noticed that our pre and post had not been booked. I immediately called Viking to see why. I was given no valid reason why and asked if I could still book a pre and post. I booked both and then asked about our cake and champagne at which time I was told there was no record for such a request and that I could get both at an extra cost to me. This was totally contrary to my initial conversation. After writing a steren mail to Viking I received a call from a Viking representative. She gave me the company line that such things could not be given to passengers as it would be too expensive for Viking. My response and subsequent conversation is a totally different subject. Things went fine with our pre in Prague. The Viking representatives were totally awesome. They met all our needs and requirements without hesitation. The cruise went as we expected with a huge exception from our first cruise. On our first cruise we had an extremely friendly wait staff at our meals. On this cruise we never did "connect" with the wait staff. They messed up meal orders on three occasions with little more than an apology. I will say this if it had not been for our Maitre 'd it would have been awful. The desk staff was exceptional as was Joe our Cruise Director. He was constantly making sure that everyone was in the right place at the right time. There was a major problem on our trip to Kunta Hora. As you know this is a very old city with very narrow streets. The city does not allow any tour busses in the old town. We parked about a mile away (that is what our tour guide told us), and had to walk. We had an elderly gentleman with a walker that was now expected to proceed with his walker for a mile or so over cobble stoned streets. At no time did any one from Viking offer any alternatives to this gentleman. My point with the above is that this tour and all tours should have been rated beforehand. This would allow people that are not physically able to do the tour could seek alternatives. Like I said in my title this was a good cruise not a great cruise. Based upon these experiences I will look at alternative companies for any future river cruises. Read Less

Our Viking Cruise experience was phenomenal – everything from the amenities, staff, program, and food was perfect. The Danube Waltz was full of activities that we were looking for – interesting sites that encompassed both the historical aspect and today’s attractions. I should note that we were by far the youngest passengers on our cruise, my husband and I are both 31. Many of our fellow cruisers asked if we were happy being the youngest ones aboard and honestly, we felt right at home. I wish Viking would market to others our age who don’t have kids but want ease of educational travel and not a booze filled trip where you never leave the boat. We made many lasting friendships on the boat and enjoyed getting to meet so many people with similar interests. The size of our ship and the amount of passengers was perfect. There wasn’t a time when I felt like I was overwhelmed by the amount of people on the boat, and the excursions were parceled out to group sizes that were manageable to move around easily and efficiently. Our room was very comfortable and provided everything we needed. Viking should advertise that there is room under the bed to hold your luggage because I thought it was great bonus not to have to walk over my suitcase every time I entered the room. I also appreciated that there weren't any children running about. This was an adult only vacation and it was nice to not have to worry about children running around. I was particularly pleased with the lectures that were given including the Vienna Coffeehouse Culture, Viennese history, and cooking class. Our program director, Joe, did a great job at the Vienna Coffeehouse Culture lecture, and I really loved when we were sailing through the Watchu Valley and on our way into Budapest his site commentary that was broadcast to the top deck so we could determine what we were seeing. Joe really did great job and making the trip fun – especially the night he hosted the “Liar’s Club” game. I forced my husband to go and we were both a little apprehensive about what a cruise game would look like, but by the end we were in stitches laughing so hard. Everyone that night did a great job at making 184 people laugh and have a good time. We included the beverage package in our trip and it was a great addition. The selection and drinks provided were top notch, but that doesn’t even compare to the service. Since we had the package we frequented the bar at intervals throughout the trip and the bartenders were brilliant. Some of the best conversations we had were with Miro and Pavol, our bartenders. Miro was so knowledgeable of where we were going on the trip and would give us advice on where to go and what to do during our free time. He and all the others were so great and accommodating! Also the food was excellent. I still can’t stop thinking about the delicious bread and pastries. We didn’t add on any additional excursions but did all the provided ones. They were all great! I loved that the tours were more of an overview and then they allowed free time to go back and explore what interested you most. The only suggestion I would have is it allow more free time. There were a couple of times where we had to literally run in order to get back to the boat because we were so wrapped up in different areas we were exploring. However, all the tour guides were very knowledgeable and the programs were well thought-out and insightful. We will be going on another cruise and to quote my rather cynical husband, “this is the only time I’ve ever said this in my life, but I hope they don’t lower the price because then they would have to lower their standards. I hope they continue to have such great service and amenities because we will have to do another one or maybe since we started so young we can do them all before we die.” I couldn’t agree with him more. It was perfect! Read Less

My wife has always wanted to visit Austria. So we talked and decided that the best way to get a feel for Austrian and Eastern European culture and scenery was to take a river cruise, which we have never done before. We were joined by my wife's sisters and their husbands and another couple who we love to travel with who are very good friends. Our cabin was very comfortable and we had plenty of room to store all our stuff for an 8 day cruise. although we did not spend much time there it was spacious and we were able to see our sailing adventure as we traveled out our sliding glass door. We enjoyed many daily off boat excursions that were guided by local people who were very informative and friendly. We also had plenty of time on shore to explore on our own after getting our barrings from the walking tours. The cities and scenery on the Blue Danube were beautiful. We really got a flavor of the true culture of every port we visited. The service was awesome. The crew and the staff were so friendly and informative. The meals were five star. The local wine, beer and beverages were a taste from each region we visited. we were also entertained by local actors and musicians who gave us a taste of the regional dance, song and theatrical theme. The ports we visited were so beautiful. The churches, the hills, the homes and every scene we saw was better than the last. The history was especially exciting for me as we traveled through time back to many many years before the US was even a country to current Eastern European culture. I especially liked Budapest at night. The Abbey at Melk. And Chesky Romanov in the Check Republic which was a shirt bus ride from our boat. It was ancient and beautiful. We are looking forward to traveling with Viking again soon. Our next adventure may be a river cruise on the Rhine River. Try it you'll like it. Every stop, every tour, every hiking experience on our own was fun and interesting. I walked 10 miles every day, not just a sitting around cruise. (but it could be if you want that). Food was outstanding, Service way beyond expectations, laid back, no rules or herding us around like cattle. Loved the ancient town of Chesky Komrov, like discovering a beautiful midevil town untouched by WWII. Octoberfest food and entertainment was outstanding. Dining - outstanding, we would sit with our friends and make new ones, small groups ok, beautiful views out the floor to ceiling windows. Sail away from Budapest at night, totally spectacular. We had to go to the front desk or dining room to get all our info about what to do. I liked that a lot better than announcements over the PA system. It was very quiet and elegant on board. The crew knew our names the first day, and welcomed us back on board by name and with a welcome drink and cool towel only a few hours after we had boarded. Staterooms had very comfortable beds and were very clean and well-decorated. The ship is a lot better looking on the inside than the outside, and very quiet. Don't mind motion, but never felt any motion, had to open the curtains to see if we were moving. Our first cruise on the Danube exceeded our expectations in every way. Very sad when it ended. The tour guides are incredibly well trained and knowledgeable, and the little radio and ear buds made it seem very personal so we didn't have to gather around the speaker. This was our second Viking River Cruise - we were so pleased with the first one, we decided to do a second...and, are considering a third trip with Viking. Service is warm, friendly, professional & efficient. The staff are a joy to interact with - caring & conscientious. Cabin is spacious, comfortable & well-appointed. Balcony allows for a private area when you desire a bit of quiet time to read, write, chat etc. The food is well presented, varied, offers an opportunity to try regional specialties & most importantly, allows you to eat a very healthy, delichious diet, IF you choose too. Of course, you can be decadent, if that is your choice! Educational offerings & excellent guides provided real insight & enlightenment about the countries we were visiting. An enjoyable learning experience. We've taken advantage of going early & staying after the cruise both times - this added a lot to our overall satisfaction & enjoyment. Would definitely add the pre and post days every time. We've met lovely people both times - interesting, well-read, fun folks. The trips are a perfect combination of "just us" time and meet new friends opportunities. Bravo Viking - don't ever change! Read Less

We were attending a wedding in Munich, Germany and decided to see more of Europe while we were there. We booked the Explorer Suite and had what we consider one of the most memorable and enjoyable trips of our lives. The ship was beautiful, service was exemplary, staff were extremely accommodating and friendly and the food was way above expectations. We spent an extra day in Budapest prior to boarding and enjoyed that decision. We took in sights that were not on the list of places to visit once we officially joined the cruise. Both our embarkation and our disembarkation went very smoothly. At the time of our disembarkation, we were concerned due to our early flight out of Munich for Seattle. Viking provided us with a private Mercedes touring bus at 4:00 a.m. to take us on the 2 hour drive to the Munich airport. We were amazed at how well we were taken care of throughout this entire Viking adventure. The scheduled day excursions were managed very well. The tour guides provided were knowledgeable and also very accommodating and they always left us plenty of time to explore on our own with very clear instructions on how to return to the ship and when.
