My daughter and I chose the Danube Waltz river cruise on the Viking Wilhjalm because the dates coincided with our time off from work and the cruise included two cities - Budapest and Vienna - that we wanted to visit. From beginning to end every aspect of the cruise exceeded our expectations. Since Viking arranged our air travel one of their representatives greeted us at the Munich airport and escorted us to Passau, where our ship was docked. Upon arrival at the ship we were greeted warmly by the Hotel Manager (Julian) and the Maitre D' (Alex) who welcomed us aboard. Our cabin was not quite ready so we proceeded to the Upper Deck Lounge for a buffet lunch. By the time we had finished it our cabin was ready, and when we entered it we found our luggage in place along with two complimentary robe/slipper sets. Our cabin was on the main deck (water level) so it had a half-window, but we spent so little time there that we didn't feel deprived of scenery. The cabin was small but designed so efficiently that we never felt cramped. We showered, dressed, and slept there but spent most of our wake-time on board in the dining room, in the lounge, on the Aquavit Terrace, or on the upper deck. Dining options included both menu service and buffet service for breakfast and lunch and menu service for dinner. Food was plentiful and delicious, with a variety of offerings including typical American-style dishes as well as regional specialties and vegetarian dishes. Open seating for meals enabled us to meet and socialize with many other passengers. There was after-dinner entertainment scheduled each evening. Some programs were just for fun (for example, a Liars Club competition), and some had a cultural aspect (for example, a demonstration on how to make apple strudel and an anthology of Viennese music.) Before dinner each evening Joe, the Program Director, described the next day's shore excursions and gave us some insight into local customs and practices while offering suggestions for shopping, dining, and sightseeing. At each port of call there was at least one shore excursion and several optional excursions, all escorted by knowledgeable tour guides. There also was some free time for passengers to explore destinations on their own. We found our excursions to be enjoyable, informative, and well planned. I do wish we'd spent another day in Vienna, but I hope to return some day to see the sights we didn't have time to visit on this trip. We chose to spend an extra day in Budapest after the cruise was over. It was well worth it! I would be remiss if I didn't comment on the ship's personnel. Every crew member we encountered was professional and efficient but also warm and welcoming. For the duration of the cruise they truly made the ship a home away from home. We were sad to reach our journey's end and we look forward to someday taking another Viking cruise. Read Less

My wife and I have been traveling to Europe on land trips with family members for many years, sometimes with as many as 12 people. Of late, we have started to use the ship option, having cruised the Greek Islands, Amalfi Coast, and the Adriatic (Croatia, etc.). This time we decided to try the river based version. I was very pleased. River cruising is much more focused on the exploration of the cities and sights, rather than shipboard activities. If you have never done a river cruise, be aware, it is fundamentally different from ocean based travel, even with respect to the boutique cruises on Azamara or Seabourn. The river boats are smaller (190 passengers in our case) and there are no casinos, circus acts, and a half dozen restaurants. Instead, it is a very comfortable experience; you have the same few wait-staff every day that know your name snd learn you preferences. They start offering you food and drinks often before you ask. Everyone is friendly, and you have the chance to mingle with other guests in the large dining area. The menu consists of some excellent everyday choices and a separate section that has a series of new daily specials. The food is excellent; there are appetizers, main courses and desserts that you can mix and match - no judgement - although we all overindulged a bit. The excursions and airport transportation are run with precision. We were immediately met by a Viking representative upon arrival at the luggage carousel at the airport who brought us to the Viking bus. The land tours, whether walking or via bus, were all arranged ahead of time - one merely goes to the desk, picks up the day's information and group assignment, and is met by the guide. The boat provides small radios that are synced to your guide - these are very helpful in that you can always hear what's going on without having to be on top of the tour person. On the last day, the crew arrange everything for the return to the airport, including meeting you and helping with luggage, and all the way to the correct counter for your flight. I have traveled a lot - both for work and fun - and this was a very nice experience. We expect we will do this again, hopefully soon. As a final note - the staff are the best I've encountered - they are what make the trip memorable almost as much as the historical cities. Read Less

We have already travelled the Rhine and the Moselle so decided to try another river the Danube trip with Viking was superb cabins, dining service all excellent very busy with trips because there are so many sights to see. Our only complaint was the lack of entertainment the other cruises we have done had better evening entertainment but we enjoyed the rest of the trip would go with Viking again but on a different trip of course our favourite river is the Moselle so pretty but understand the American passengers had travelled a very long way and it is all about the history in the bigger ports. Budapest was my favourite stop it is a lovely city so many great sights and so much history we also found Bratislava charming. I would recommend Viking to anyone if you want top class ships and top class service keep up the good work. Just one point I would have been a bit upset if I had paid extra for a balcony because at most ports we moored along side another ship so feel you were limited to the use of your balcony so feel that the quite large sum charged for different cabins is not a good selling point. I had been wanting to try river cruising for some time. Viking got good ratings, the Danube had the greatest appeal, and friends raved about a similar cruise to see the Christmas markets. It was a good choice. The crew was amazing. It could be 11:00 at night or 3:30 in the morning, but they were always upbeat and happy to assist in any way they could. The highlight for me was the 10 p.m. entrance into Budapest. They tried to prepare us, but it was even more magical than I imagined. I was also struck by the design of the ship. Viking clearly communicated to the architect the feedback from their passengers on what works, what doesn't, and what they'd like to see. Besides having a typical Scandinavian look, everything about the design worked. We had been told that in busy ports we might have to "double park." This was true, but it was so easy to walk across a sister ship that you almost didn't notice that you were stepping from one ship to another. I also appreciated that, in every case where we were double parked, sometime during our stay, the crews rotated the ships so that each ship got to be moored on the riverside for several hours. Loved our initial Viking cruise. Chose this one from personal recommendation of others who took it previously. The length of time was great, just enough for a first time on a longship. Had wonderful experiences meeting others, making new friends. Accommodations were top-notch; service was impeccable. The included excursions were thorough, safe, and enjoyable, even though our weather was a bit brisk for April! We loved coming back to the ship where refreshments and comfort awaited us. The optional excursions we took were well worth the money - we enjoyed the extra experiences and were made to feel comfortable during all the trips ashore. The ship was clean, kept at a good temperature; the housekeeping services were excellent. Servers at all levels were polite, courteous, helpful, always with smiling faces. We loved the itinerary that took us into Budapest at night - breathtaking! We hope to take another Viking cruise again, taking along some friends to enjoy the experience! Read Less

Friends who made a couple of Viking River Cruises highly recommended us to cruise on the Viking cruise line. We had made several (7) Ocean Cruises on Royal Caribbean with them and they wanted us to enjoy this new and intimate experience on a smaller vessel. Most of our cruises on RCI were 3500 and above passengers where this one was only 190! The cruise itinerary for us was perfect for although we have traveled extensively throughout Europe we had never been to Budapest nor Prague. Learned a lot about why communism and those behind the Iron Curtain during the Cold War were so affected by not being able to live freely. The Viking was very clean and support staff were very professional seeing to our every need. It was service with pleasure from embarkation to disembarkation. Our Crew was excellent and we had a great Tour Director (Edina) and Hospitality Director (Mariana). Superior experience and great trip down the Danube! Read Less

Very pleased with overall performance . The included shore excursions were well planned & executed . The most outstanding comment each day was HOW HARD & DILIGENT the program director was. I saw him from morning to evening at every event - observing, directing & controlling the entire program. His onboard & general knowledge of the entire trip was a amazing. ( without any notes). I only know of him as JOE. He is certainly an asset to this company. I would like to know of any other Viking cruises he is on , as i would definitely consider booking it. Everyone i talked with were completely satisfied with all aspects of the cruise. I will definitely consider another Viking cruise. River cruising has a distinct advantage over ocean cruising in the ability to view more of the country side as you are underway and very important -- the lack of "sea sick "movement of the ship.
