We choose this cruise so that we could travel with my sister and her husband. The service was excellent, starting with the guides meeting us as we arrived at Budapest's airport. They were ready with the bus to take us to our ship without any delay. The service continued when we checked in, with the desk service quickly handling our reservation and delivering our luggage to the to our cabin very smoothly. We were then able to freshen up and go to lunch on board. The food for all our meals was simply fantastic. We especially enjoyed the special menus of the local cuisine from each of the cities/ countries we visited that we had for the evening dinners. The ease of getting on and off the boat was a plus compared to ocean sailings. The sailing was very smooth even when passing through the locks. And the scenery was magnificent. We were very pleased with practically everything on the trip and plan to do another cruise in the future. Read Less

Our friends had gone on same Danube cruise the previous spring and we couldn’t join at that time. Wanted to catch up so we could be together next cruise. Plus I was tired of being green! As in envious... Most stress was leaving for airport to receive text that our flight had been cancelled. And then calling Viking to learn they were unaware. Rebooked at airport thru different country to land at different time and still able to find the well marked Viking representative and board luxury bus for two hour trip to boat. Local guides were fantastic for the most part. Food and staff excellent. Commitment to history and education outstanding. Longboat was well designed and very comfortable inside and out. Wish we could have had longer time in each city, but no complaints about Viking in that respect. It’s just that each city is deeply layered and rich with history, always leaving you wanting more. Have already booked a Viking cruise for next April. Talked so much about it, we have gathered 16 couples to join our group of friends! Read Less

Friends and neighbors have all recommended trying a river cruise instead of ocean cruise. We have sailed before (5+) and enjoyed all our trips. We prefer ships with 2,500 or less and 7-8 day trips with a short stay pre or post trip. It seemed most of our recommendations were with Viking and a short run for the first time - we took that advice. They were dead on with the recommendations. Our agent (Diana Randall) with Avoya made our selection and arrangements pain free - as usual! From pricing to selection of cabin, activities and post stay in Budapest were excellent. What we enjoyed the most; amazing-friendly and accommodating crew; excellent dinning and on board activities; enjoyed meeting new friends and not feeling like a cabin number, but a name and person; top notch excursions and plenty to select from - especially liked our own listening device for the trip which made it easy to hear and keep up with the tour; each crew member from cabin server to Concierge knew my name and made me feel as a "VIP"; attention to little details as: warm towel and drink upon returning for a day ashore, snacks and tea/coffee always available, fresh water always in the cabin, quiet places to relax - I can go on and on. In a nut shell - we are planning another Viking trip in September 2018 and trying an Ocean cruise on their new small ships in April 2019. Thank you Viking for the "VIP" treatment! We are previous river cruisers on a different line and relatives did this particular itinerary on Viking. Traveling with my husband and our two 20-something children, we had the trip of a lifetime. Highly recommend the Danube Waltz cruise. Starting in Passau and ending in Budapest is the way to go. Staff could NOT be more top notch and completely attentive to every need. They got to know us and we felt so welcome and cared for. If you go you must have dinner on the Aquavit Terrace, we were about the only people who did and I cant imagine why! The food was excellent and you could get the same meal as the main dining room, but the VIEW was so much better! We ate there every night. Pavel our server was unsurpassed. Food was tremendous and shore excursions truly enlightening. Arriving into Budapest at night with the Parliament building stunningly lit was an experience I will never forget. Read Less

We traveled as a group of eight family members, staying for a few days prior to the cruise in Budapest and ending our journey in Munich after the conclusion of the cruise. Our family enjoys traveling together and Viking makes that an easy experience for younger and older travelers - we ranged in age from 55 to 85. The Vilhjalm is a lovely ship, we thought the crew members were OUTSTANDING, from the tour director, to the room stewards, dining room attendants, and bartenders. The ship is modern, extremely clean with a welcoming decor. The amenities are very nice including an all day coffee and tea service, fresh baked goods in the morning and cookies in the afternoon. We had a veranda stateroom on the third level and enjoyed it very much. It is plenty of room, nicely appointed, very nice bathrooms, bedding and so forth. There is a laundry service available for an extra charge and it comes back very promptly and nearly gift wrapped. The ports of call on this trip were really wonderful - we truly loved Budapest, Durnstein, Bratislava, Vienna, Melk, and Passau. There is a very nice selection of shore excursions and we took part in one or more excursion per day. We've done one large cruise ship previously and then tried Viking in 2015 on the Amsterdam to Basel, Switzerland cruise - which we loved - and we came back to Viking again in 2017 without hesitation and we were not disappointed. We plan to do a Viking cruise in France in 2019 and look forward to our next Viking journey! Read Less

My wife and I have cruised with Viking before and not only did we gave a great time, we were extremely impressed with Viking going above and beyond. And this cruise proved no different. The attention to detail, the customer service and all of the extras are truly amazing and certainly very much appreciated. On this cruise, one of our party is vegan. Every evening at dinner, the maitre d' would come by our table and plan, to the last detail, the next day's menu with her in order to accommodate her. The tours were all very good, enjoyable and informative. The headsets provided make all the difference in the world. There was no need to have to follow the tour guide closely so as not to miss what they're saying. The staff's dedication and enthusiasm are second to none. It was our friends' first river cruise and they were extremely pleased with everything. Read Less

I traveled the Rhine in 2015 and the Danube in 2016. I had a wonderful time both trips. The cabins are wonderful and clean and all . The beds were comfortable. The showers were hot.The food was wonderful and delicious . The entertainment was wonderful. The ship is spotless . Any issues or questions were addressed . The tours are great for you had several levels of walking. The tour guides were all great and the most wonderful was the GIrl who did the Cesky kremlov was the greatest for she even gave her phone number, if we got lost or needed her. The ship never rocked and the crew kept us updated on all we needed to know. We got into Budapest late because of lock times and the next night the Captain took us back out after supper so we could sail back into Budapest in enjoy the spectacular lights of Budapest and it was fantastic for it was a holy day and all the church bells were ringing. It was spectacular as the fire works on the 4th of July! The crew on the boat were helpful and would do anything for you to make you comfortable and enjoy the trip. They could not have been nicer. My daughter is lactose intolerant and her food was great and she never ever got sick. Umbrellas were available if you needed them. We always had bottle water for tours. Bus Drivers were great. We met great and friendly people . People were polite on the trip. The cities were wonderful to see. Just sailing on the River was great . There was nothing to complain about. The man in charge of our side trips and other things told us we did not have change our euros for they would be accepted in the tourist area and he gave us the current conversion rates. I would love to go again. The next time I go it will be the Paris river cruise. My sleep was never ever disturbed. I loved it on the Danube for we had a suite. I loved the veranda and the view from the room. I loved up top of the boat and the special non slip flooring. I had no complaints and am saving my money for the Paris trip. I must say I am 70 and going on the boat to all these places was great for I did not have to go from hotel to hotel unpacking and packing . Eating my meals on the boat saved my daughter and me for getting sick . The meals on the boat corresponded to were we were and so did the entertainment. You can drink the water on the boat also. You did not miss anything by not eating in the towns for you had the cuisine and the local entertainment. Yes can't wait to go again. Oh yes they have people at the airport the help you get to the bus that goes to the boat when you arrive and when you leave they have people at the airport helping you get checked in. It is quite the organized procedure getting everyone to the airport in time for their flights -- staring breakfast in the wee hours . You never went hungry. Read Less

We chose this cruise for three reasons: first, my mom had always wanted to do a river cruise, second, the reviews for Viking were very good, and third, the itinerary was what we were looking for. We started in Prague with the 3 day extension and stayed at the Sheraton. The pick up at the airport was seamless, the concierge specific to Viking in our hotel was excellent. The tours in Prague were informative and our guide was very knowledgeable and entertaining. This was easily the best part of the whole experience. Embarkation was super easy, and our room was neat, clean and ready for us. So far so good. Our first meal was not so great. Three of the ten of us had tough grisly meat, my mom's was way over cooked. I'm not that picky about food, but it just wasn't great. Throughout the week, we sat at the same table every night. The server didn't even try to learn our names, didn't pull out our chairs for us (I would have especially expected this for my 80 year old mother), never refilled my water glass without being asked, and just generally didn't anticipate our needs. All week long the food was just ok; I would have expected better for the ratings the ship received and for there only being around 170 passengers. Also, the deserts were not even worth ordering and if you like fresh fruit or good salads, good luck. Also, once it was nine or so, there was no food to be found anywhere on the boat. You had to learn quickly to take something back to your cabin if you wanted any evening snacks. Speaking of the cabins, The beds, linens, pillows, showers and TV were great. The service was just so-so. The first night the AC wasn't working and we only had heavy feather comforters. I requested a sheet which they brought the next day but didn't bother to put it on the bed. Also, we were out of TP in our cabin for 2 days-certainly something the room steward should have been attentive to without having to request it. One day I had a migraine so I stayed in bed until noon. When I left, I directly asked the steward to go ahead and make up our room. She said ok but when we returned around 5, nothing had been done. To me, these kind of things just are not first class. Also, the first 2 nights there was a sewer smell. Entertainment. The staff brought on some fun entertainment that featured local dancers, singers and opera singers; all were well presented and very good. However, on the other nights, there was nothing. I mean, set up some card or board games, bridge, rummy, etc. Have a Bingo night, have a karaoke night, etc. I'm not looking for Vegas style shows, just something fun to do for the crowd that is under 60 and doesn't go to bed by 9. Ports and shore excursions: We spent a lot of time on buses and listening to very knowledgable tour guides tell us the history of buildings and pointing out various sights. I did like the headsets. They worked great and made it easy to hear and follow the guides. Without exception, every one of our guides on the included excursions was outstanding in their knowledge, seemed to love what they were doing, shared their feelings openly about living under a communist regime, answered questions, and understood how to lead a group. If you love history, you will really appreciate the guides. However, if you want anything more than just looking at the outside of a building, you really need to buy the special excursion packages. We bought the night in the countryside with dinner and folk dancing. I'd give it about a B- There were a lot of people packed into a small space with room for only 5 or 6 of the guests to participate in the dancing. Kind of reminded me of something you would see at Disney. We really loved the ports we visited-Passau to Budapest. We were traveling with 3 siblings and their spouses, all in our 50's, our mom and her sister-80 and 82, and one friend with her mother-same ages. I am not sure if I would go again or not. If you are flying all the way over the pond anyway, my advice would be to be sure and do the 3 day pre-cruise in Prague. We felt that 2 days in Budapest was enough so instead of doing the post cruise tour, we booked our own return and visited London for 3 days. One more thing, my mom and her sister stayed in Budapest for the 3 day post tour. They said their flights home (provided by Viking) were terrible. With travel time and layovers it took them almost 20 hours to get home to Orlando. I think Viking might just look for the cheapest seats, but when a lot of the clientelle is older, maybe they should pay a little more attention to the itinerary. Read Less

I had heard good things about Viking river cruises, but I still did my research. Viking had a wonderful itinerary, a beautiful boat, and the customer service people were top notch, especially Ceasar Reyes. We chose the Danube Waltz and added a pre-extension to Prague, then stayed at the end on our own for another night in Budapest. We were able to visit five countries, which gave us a great overview of that part of eastern Europe. I can't say enough about this cruise. It exceeded my expectations in every way. We stayed in the smallest room on the bottom floor, because that was all that was available. It turned out to be just perfect, as we spent most of our time in the lounge or outside on the deck. The food was amazing! So fresh and delicious. The special dinners were really fun with such great attention to detail. The best part was the professional, fun and competent staff. They made the experience the best possible. I will definitely do another Viking cruise! Read Less

Every stop, every tour, every hiking experience on our own was fun and interesting. I walked 10 miles every day, not just a sitting around cruise. (but it could be if you want that). Food was outstanding, Service way beyond expectations, laid back, no rules or herding us around like cattle. Loved the ancient town of Chesky Komrov, like discovering a beautiful midevil town untouched by WWII. Octoberfest food and entertainment was outstanding. Dining - outstanding, we would sit with our friends and make new ones, small groups ok, beautiful views out the floor to ceiling windows. Sail away from Budapest at night, totally spectacular. We had to go to the front desk or dining room to get all our info about what to do. I liked that a lot better than announcements over the PA system. It was very quiet and elegant on board. The crew knew our names the first day, and welcomed us back on board by name and with a welcome drink and cool towel only a few hours after we had boarded. Staterooms had very comfortable beds and were very clean and well-decorated. The ship is a lot better looking on the inside than the outside, and very quiet. Don't mind motion, but never felt any motion, had to open the curtains to see if we were moving. Our first cruise on the Danube exceeded our expectations in every way. Very sad when it ended. The tour guides are incredibly well trained and knowledgeable, and the little radio and ear buds made it seem very personal so we didn't have to gather around the speaker. The made it really fun and exciting like the first time they had ever taken a group to the castle. Can't wait to do another one. Read Less

My wife and I have been traveling to Europe on land trips with family members for many years, sometimes with as many as 12 people. Of late, we have started to use the ship option, having cruised the Greek Islands, Amalfi Coast, and the Adriatic (Croatia, etc.). This time we decided to try the river based version. I was very pleased. River cruising is much more focused on the exploration of the cities and sights, rather than shipboard activities. If you have never done a river cruise, be aware, it is fundamentally different from ocean based travel, even with respect to the boutique cruises on Azamara or Seabourn. The river boats are smaller (190 passengers in our case) and there are no casinos, circus acts, and a half dozen restaurants. Instead, it is a very comfortable experience; you have the same few wait-staff every day that know your name snd learn you preferences. They start offering you food and drinks often before you ask. Everyone is friendly, and you have the chance to mingle with other guests in the large dining area. The menu consists of some excellent everyday choices and a separate section that has a series of new daily specials. The food is excellent; there are appetizers, main courses and desserts that you can mix and match - no judgement - although we all overindulged a bit. The excursions and airport transportation are run with precision. We were immediately met by a Viking representative upon arrival at the luggage carousel at the airport who brought us to the Viking bus. The land tours, whether walking or via bus, were all arranged ahead of time - one merely goes to the desk, picks up the day's information and group assignment, and is met by the guide. The boat provides small radios that are synced to your guide - these are very helpful in that you can always hear what's going on without having to be on top of the tour person. On the last day, the crew arrange everything for the return to the airport, including meeting you and helping with luggage, and all the way to the correct counter for your flight. I have traveled a lot - both for work and fun - and this was a very nice experience. We expect we will do this again, hopefully soon. As a final note - the staff are the best I've encountered - they are what make the trip memorable almost as much as the historical cities. Read Less

The purpose of our cruise was to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary. This was our first Viking cruise and it fully met our expectations. The ship was comfortable and well designed to meet our needs. Our cabin was of first class hotel quality with a comfortable bed, excellent bath facilities, and a charming veranda. Dining was one of the high points of the cruise. Not only was the food excellent, but the staff went out of their way to make sure that the daily menus met our special dietary needs. Service was outstanding. For a week we felt almost like we being treated like royalty. The excursions were extremely well chosen and conducted by very knowledgable guides. Particularly memorable were the organ concert at Passau, the day trip to Pesky Krumlov, and the optional tours of Schoebrunn Palace in Vienna and the Jewish quarter in Budapest. While the cruise itself was all that we could have wished for, the same cannot be said for our air travel, particularly the flight from Los Angeles to Europe. Because Viking's booking agent neglected to inform American Airlines that our itinerary had been revised, we were informed at LAX, when we tried to check in, that we had no tickets. The result was an agonizing hour on the phone while our travel agent, a Viking agent, and American Airlines counter personnel struggled, ultimately successfully, to reissue our tickets so we could board our plane. This was my second Viking River cruise and they were both incredible! The first was The Heart of Germany during Christmas week and the second was The Danube Waltz during the summer. The service is spectacular and they really know how to make you feel special. I love the fact that EVERYTHING is included such as the air, airport pick up and drop off, excursions with local knowledgeable guides, beer & wine with lunch and dinner, water in the room, water on the excursions, umbrellas if needed, coffee & tea 24 hours a day, etc. The ships are small (around 180 passengers) so everyone gets to know one another and you make friends very quickly. The food is out of this world phenomenal and they even offer a complimentary tour of the kitchen one of the nights after dinner so you may see how everything works behind the scenes. There are no screaming kids, no smoky casinos, no drunk obnoxious people hanging out at the pool (there isn't one) but rather people who love to learn about other countries, their history and cultures. I took my 19 year old daughter on both river cruises, she absolutely loved it and we are in the process of planning our third. I won't cruise with any other line on a river except Viking. Read Less
