exlplored departure city before cruise Amsterdam was Quite interesting enjoyed the city. Hotel was excellent great staff and first class. All departures were on time and very smoooth. Our cabin was kept very clean and tidy but the air condition was intermittent at night which caused us to sweat in the middle of the night . Porter could not get control adjusted.. Found that we needed to get to lounge early otherwise no convenient seat available. Similar story with dining room. Would have preferred assigned seating. All food was very good with lots of choices lunge had excellent liquor selection. Excursions were somewhat lacking. Some not good value for money. Gold excursion is for kids not adults and way over priced. Vienna and Prague were amazing would love to go again and spent more time there. The last hotel we stayed in before flying home was not up to standard we are used to. Mold in bathroom. I would like to see some area on ship for fitness routine. I would go again in a few years. Did not get our prepaid seats on KLM airline on way home. My wife and I had to sit quite a few rows apart.. Read Less

The ship was quiet and clean. The food was very good, but breakfast was mostly the same selection of hot and cold foods and THE SAME pastries EVERY DAY, which got very boring. We missed not having access to self serve laundry features, such as an ironing board. Thankfully, the dress code was very informal and relaxing. Bottled water was always in your room, and also handed out on the way to every excursion. The staff was very hard working and friendly. One odd thing of noticable difference from ocean cruises, was the lack of available snacks between meals. There were self service cookies and hot drinks available, but no pizza or other "proteins". Then, the cookies were taken away over an hour before dinner. Dinner was served at 7. So, You had to keep your refrigerator stocked with cheese, fruit, etc. from the breakfast buffet. It was just odd, and rather disconnected. Then, out of the blue, they served a wisp of canapes and a few themed drinks at about four of the afternoon briefings. Those essences of cordiality were nice. Too bad they were so inconsistent. The shore excursions were adequate, but on tight schedules, loaded with random trivia, and lacking of much free time. The one activity that got old, was having to sit through a daily briefing before dinner each night about the following day's activities. If you didn't go, you could turn it on in your room on the TV. But, it was 30-45 minutes that just cut out any chance of some down time before dinner, when it would have been nice to enjoy a shower and or some quiet time on the balcony. Since they had the meetings, they didn't bother to put any details in the daily newsletter, which was mostly useless. The director's name was Kane. He was very thorough with details, accommodating, and a personable "propogandist". But, the daily briefings became referred to as "The Kane Show" by the fourth day. He was pleasant, but it just got to be too much of an elaborate yet average ordenance of details that could have been handed out in printed form. These are just minor frustrated perspectives. Go on a Viking river cruise! The sites are amazing, and the company and crew make a solid effort to make you feel like important guests. Read Less

We stayed the extra days in Amsterdam & had a wonderful time. I would recommend people to do this. Everything from embarkation to disembarkation went so smoothly it was incredible!! We embarked on the Ve in Amsterdam & disembarked in Budapest from the Gifjon. The ships are very clean, modern, & the cabins are roomy with all amenities one could imagine from shampoo & conditioner to lotion. The crew on the both ships were superior they all go above & beyond to take care of all of the passengers needs. Made us feel like royalty. The dining room on both ships was elegant, yet you felt at home with the staff that made sure we were enjoying your dining experience. Our wine glasses were never empty. Who could ask for anything more!!! All of the ports & excursions met all of our expectations, very well organized, & tour guides were well informed of the areas we were visiting. We are glad that there were no children on our cruise. That's what Disney is for. Our 15 day Grand European Cruise was a dream come true for us & it was a wonderful way to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We made wonderful friendships that we both know we will treasure for a long time. We are already looking forward to planning our next Viking cruise!! Read Less

Starting with the ship, we were very impressed with the care with which we were taken care of. Such kindness and professional attitudes. We were equally impressed with our stateroom as we were in the Explorer Suite we did not know what to expect. We were very pleasantly surprised and pleased. All I ca say about the food is WONDERFUL! The dining atmosphere was equally enjoyable and as far as our servers well, Mila, Zoli, Glenn, Kane, Julian were so good we wanted to take them home with us. Pleasant, Funny, on top of everything. Just great. Activities, service, and keeping the cruise interesting was a great experience and everyone did a great job. They made us feel that we were in our own living rooms, at least that is the way Fred and I felt. As for the tours, we got to see everything he had hoped to see and much more. Would we go again, yes we are looking at two more trip for next year. Read Less

I chose this cruise because I had always wanted to see the Rhine River. Our travel agent recommended Viking and made most of the arrangements for us. We were on the Viking Ve and left Basel on Friday, April 15 and sailed to Amsterdam. Our embarkation was very smooth. Viking picked us up at the airport in a nice tour bus and took us directly to the boat, handled all our luggage and made everything very easy. We had flown from Atlanta all night and were exhausted when we got to Basel. We were met on the boat by staff with warm, moist towels and taken to the dining room where we were offered coffee and breakfast. All the staff was very friendly and welcoming. Our room was already ready so we were taken there and staff showed us everything in the room, lights, etc. The cabin was clean and very nice.Sitting room was well equipped, the bathroom was a decent size and the veranda was wonderful. The veranda wasn't very big but did hold 2 chairs and a side table. We enjoyed sitting out there during our cruise. The ship wasn't too big which was nice. It was very clean, comfortable and everything was easy to find, and if you couldn't find something, the staff was always there to help. We ate every meal in the dining room. We met two excellent servers our first meal on the ship, Glen and Zoli, and we stayed with them the entire trip. They were very conscientious, great servers and both had great personalities which kept us entertained for all our meals. The food was always good and presentation excellent. If we didn't like something, our servers would happily bring something else for us to try. We enjoyed the omelet making station in the morning. Our least favorite meal was German night. We tried the different foods and the schnapps but not our favorite. My friend and I went to a couple of the game activities at night and enjoyed them. It was a good way to meet new people as there were not a lot of people there. Service on the boat was excellent. We had no complaints about anything of this nature. All we had to do was ask and it was done, from our servers to the young man who cleaned our cabin. We went on all the included excursions and enjoyed them. We did not take any of the optional excursions and as I stated above ate all our meals on the ship. My favorite excursion was the Black Forest trip and also the windmills. It was fun to see the countryside. It was just my friend and I traveling together, no children. Never saw any children on this trip but can't imagine children enjoying this cruise. Mostly older travelers. The disembarkation in Amsterdam went very smoothly. We signed up for the optional 2 days at Hotel Okura in Amsterdam and enjoyed the hotel and city. It would love to go on another Viking Cruise, maybe the Danube next time. Also would love to the Mediterranean cruise to Venice. Read Less

Our first cruise, my wife and I did not know what to expect. However we were delighted with every aspect of the cruise from the ambiance, the food, the staff, the entertainment including the more cerebral opportunities such as the lecture on German history and about Bavarian history. The ports of call were great and the tour guide knowledge and courtesy were exceptional. The logistics caused by the disruption due to low water levels were handled with the minimum of fuss by the crew and staff, who were fantastic on both the Ve and the Gefjon. I must mention the program director for our cruise was outstanding always cheerful and highly entertaining (had a great singing voice also!) Read Less

We had an absolutely splendid time on our 1st River Cruise. It was everything and more than we had hoped for. We started on the Ve & due to the low water finished our trip on the Gefjon. The transfer from one to the other was painless. Each day we enjoyed breathtaking scenery on & off the ship. We were kept abreast of each & every thing that pertained to us during the trip. Every evening the Program Director filled us with details for the following day. Meals were 5 Star. The guides for the excursions were excellent. All were very knowledgeable & proud to share (with a touch of humor) their city with us. Entertainment was brought on board, the chef gave an Apple Strudel making demonstration, we had a glass blowing demonstration as well as informative talks to teach us about windmills & locks & being a captain. We were even given a crash course in German to make our time on shore easier. The staff were super friendly & all you had to do was ask & they would go above & beyond for you. We loved our room - the balcony was well worth it. This trip certainly left us wanting more. Thanks Viking. :-) Read Less

We sailed the four rivers of Europe from Amsterdam to Budapest. The newly christened ship was gorgeous and the staff was fantastic. Kane, the cruise director was phenomenal with a wealth of information and extremely hospitable. We had a balcony cabin which was worth the money and provided us days of beautiful scenic viewing. The food was superb and the wait staff was spectacular. We can't say enough about this journey. There was a complication of the Mein River was low as it has been that way for a few weeks so they bused us from Nuremberg to Passau - a 2 1/2 hour trip. We boarded the sister ship Gefjon and had the same cabin. Kane stayed with us and the cre was equally as good. Because of the complication Viking provided us with a free concert in Vienna - Mozart and Strauss. Just spectacular. Stops were great to include Melk, Kinderdjik, Cologne, Miktenberg etc. Viking has 35 ships and 250 buses so they are well prepared for low water levels and provided excellent tours in each stop with wonderful guides. Cabins are equipped with American and European electrical outlets. Read Less

This was our first river cruise experience and we were impressed. From the initial greeting at the airport in Amsterdam to the assistance at departure from Budapest, Viking crew and team members were extremely courteous and hospitable. They were like family and knew how to anticipate what we might need or want. Our veranda state room was well equipped with what we needed, but we found ourselves enjoying the views from the public areas of the ship in the midst of new found friends. The day excursions were guided by knowledgeable and interesting guides. The additional excursions were well worth the added costs. The food was delicious, but our favorite was the pork knuckles we ordered at the cafe in Cologne. We have fond memories if this trip and look forward to more in the future. Read Less
