Recommendations Supposed to go in the Var to Budapest. River was low so went on the Tor for one night transferred to the Var. We did cruise the Wachau Valley and then transferred to another Long boat at Vienna. Bus rides for most of the supposed Danube trip ie. Regensberg to Passau and back. Regensberg to Vienna, Vienna to Budapest. Left the boat at 3:30 am to go to the airport. Dumped at the airport with no guidance to catch a 6:30 am plane to Brussels and then to Chicago. I left out that I had a IU infection and called a Dr. in Vienna. Did Viking follow up, NO! We have been on 28 cruises and enjoyed all but one. We were notified 8 hours in advance that the river was low and we might have unpack and go to another boat. We had booked a room in Kansas City and it was too late to change anything. We were informed in Budapest that the long boat had been stuck for 3 weeks and was serving as a one night hotel. It is obvious that Viking was only interested in the money and had no concerns about passenger rights. We were offered a cruise voucher for 25% off future cruises which infuriates me. I might mention that we did not pick a 3:30 trip to the airport for a 6:30 flight which means getting up a 2:00am. See the World in comfort, yeah right! Read Less

My family decided to do a special river cruise on the Viking Var sailing the Romantic Danube on August 17th. Like several others already noted, our experience was the worst we have ever experienced. I will not go into any farther detail on doing very little sailing but a lot of bus rides since you can read others comments. My focus will be on how Viking did an extremely POOR job preparing and communicating to the circumstances of the low water issue. - receiving an email a couple of days prior to departure is ridiculous. They knew exactly the issue for over a month and should have given their CUSTOMERS a warning so they could decide any action they might like to take. VIKING decided their P&L more important. - The boats are not secure. ANYONE could walk on and off the boat. The only time there was ever security at the entrance of the boat was in Budapest. A gentleman/security sat outside on a bench. I actually went running and when I was returning to the boat my son FaceTimed me. The security guy was on the bench asleep. I actually turned my phone so my son could see him and get a good laugh at the level of security the boat has. VIKING open your eyes before something unfortunate happens and then you react. - Food was below average especially if you experienced an ocean cruise from other companies. I would say the service was average BUT lets be realistic. We were seeing different cruise employees since we were on 3 different boats. I'm sure it would be better if on same boat and you were building relationships and tipping for the trip was going to them. - My suite with oversized balcony could not be used due to spiders EVERYWHERE. Had to go to top verses use the view I paid for. - Communication was terrible. Kept saying they weren't sure of what we were doing at the end of the week. CUSTOMERS want to know, and VIKING simply didn't want to rock the boat. - I felt sorry for Director of the boat. You spend a lot of time on the boat not moving and she had to communicate all the bad news. WHERE"S THE CAPTAIN??? BOAT IS Not moving and she needs your support. Support your staff! - 25% is an absolute slap in the face AND IS ONLY ON THE CRUISING PART. Let's see: I spend over $18,000 and the initial offer is under $3,000 CREDIT on another cruise. WOW, I had such a terrible time let's do it again and at a rate that you make a lot of money on me again. Great deal - NOT!! My family reserved EVERY SUITE THEY HAD AVAILABLE. I talked with VIKING Customer Relations and made them aware that I was interested in giving them a chance to redeem themselves, that I would even stay in a suite but really thought they should step up to the plate more after I trusted them with an $18,000 investment. They did come up a little. Even 25% off my total Viking bill would have felt a lot better, but there is one simple reality to their offer: THEIR DECISION IS BASED OFF A P&L and not what is fair to their CUSTOMER. I even asked a Customer Service person if they were me would they be happy with what I was being offered, and all you get is silence, and then restating the offer. Without saying it, her answer was obviously NO. THAT SHOULD TELL VIKING SOMETHING. I believe VIKING must be fantastic when everything goes as planned. The reviews consistently say that. When things do not go as planned, they are far than at their best. - WARNING - WARNING - Do not sail VIKING's ROMANTIC Danube route in July or August!! I did not realize this is an ongoing seasonal issue. Go a different route our at a different time. - Want a POSITIVE: I noted issue with security, but loading and unloading is VERY SIMPLE. Congratulations for that. Also transportation to airport was done well. I will also say the customer service rep did a good job especially taking the beating she is taking over and over again. Unfortunately she is the messenger for VIKING and taking a pounding for them not taking care of CUSTOMERS. We had 5 suites and 2 other rooms for this cruise, and I believe I am the only one even considering giving VIKING another chance simply because the overall reviews are good. My wife is not on board with doing another cruise with VIKING, so not sure it will ever happen. Read Less

We sailed with Viking previously on the Moselle and Rhine. We wanted to sail the Danube and chose Viking. We love how they take care of everything once you arrive. A barge accident blocked the Danube causing us to change ships. Viking handled everything and compensated for the lost cruise time. Excellent crew, guides and chef. The food is excellent with several choices at each meal. Viking also handled our flights and did a good job when a booking problem arose (Air Canada mistake). We would have liked more cruise time but the accident shortening cruise time was not Vikings fault. Viking hires energetic and friendly staff that learns your preferences and takes care of you. This even happened with our second ship crew which was amazing. We stayed in a French Veranda which is a bit small but not enough to feel cramped. We spent little time in our cabin and explored on land and participated in entertainment activities which were plentiful and enjoyable. We have cruised twice with Viking and hope to cruise with them again in the future. Read Less

I went on this cruise with my family who are former Viking cruise-goers. My first impression of the ship was that it was very nice and well maintained. You could tell the staff cared about the ship's presentation. There was a smoker a few balconies down, and staff promptly handled the situation so I was able to enjoy my balcony the rest of the trip. The cabin was very nice, and surprisingly big for what I was expecting on a boat. The food was great, and I enjoyed the Chef's recommendations each night. I appreciated the variety of foods to choose from each night, from Thanksgiving themed dinner to Asian-inspired meals. Our cruise had to be altered at the last minute due to weather flooding the river, but Viking continued to arrange buses to the nearby cities so we could keep our planned excursions (which were good) as well as add other last minute options taking into consideration the inconvenience of being stuck. As part of the weather accommodations, they arranged a local river boat to take us up the scenic part of the river to view castles, as well as getting to go back to nearby towns that we had limited time at originally. Most of the excursions were good, but the walking tours were disappointing because some of the sites we didn't go in, simply stood out front and saw them while the tour guide talked about what we'd see on the inside if we did go on, which we didn't. I'd go around the city on my own instead of a walking tour, but they don't tell you the meeting place for the buses until the end of the tour, which seems like an easy enough fix with advanced planning. The trip was supposed to be Christmas themed, but we were a few days too early for the fist cities so their Christmas markets weren't open. However, they sell the same types of items in the rest of the cities so I didn't mind but if you want to full Christmas week then I'd suggest a later time. Read Less

We chose this cruise because we wanted to share the experience with family members who were able to travel at the time the cruise was scheduled. It also was after October 1 and the rates were lower then. The ship was delightful and very comfortable. The excursions were first rate and the guides very knowledgeable. The food was just outstanding and all cruise staff members were cordial and very helpful. Sasha, the Cruise Director did a great job. We learned a lot about Danube River history. The help on arrival in Budapest and departure for home from Prague was great. We were greeted at and transported from Budapest Airport and a Viking Representative literally took us by the hand to navigate the Prague Airport boarding processes. The musical presentation in Vienna was a highlight for us. If we river cruise again, we will definitely schedule with Viking. Thanks for a great experience. Read Less

Although we are a seasoned cruise family, this was our first river cruise and our first venture with Viking. We were overwhelmed at virtually every aspect of our trip. Our room was well appointed and very comfortable. The on-board service was extraordinary, particularly the food service. My wife is highly allergic (anaphylactic) to shell fish, tuna and salmon. I alerted the food service director upon boarding of her situation. He took personal control of her dining needs. Each day he provided her options for the following day. Some of these decisions required special meals. At every meal and function where food was served, he found us immediately upon arrival and let her know what presentations she needed to avoid. This was quite helpful in situations where hors d'oeuvres were served, This associate went over and above the expected attention and level of service that we expected. Our trip was marked with numerous highlights too frequent to detail here. Contrary to a recent traveler's comments about stacking boats side by side, we found absolutely no issues with air quality while docked along side or between other Viking long boats. My wife, who is usually quite reserved with her lavish reviews called this "the best cruise by far that we have ever taken." Thanks Viking! To quote MacArthur, "We'll be back!" Read Less

We chose this cruise for the places and the price. We really enjoyed this trip so much that we were delighted and eager to return. Delicious food, amazing staff, A1 service, really recommend. The tour of the Danube river is simply wonderful, the freshness of the air indescribable, each place with a different history, small towns with a fantastic architecture full of culture and progress. From the moment of our arrival to Nuremberg we were met by a Viking employee with incredible kindness, from there we forgot our luggage, they even took care of leaving them in our cabin. Everything we were offered in the catalog we had and more. Our extended days in Hungary was a sensational, a hotel with an eye-catching view, all very friendly Viking employees who said goodbye when all the luggage was checked in at the airport and we were ready to board. I can only say thank you Viking for the excellent trip we had and see you in a new destination. Read Less

We had never been in this part of the world and this was the right time to see the sights, as well as spend some quality time with other members of our family. We were not disappointed in the slightest! We enjoyed the diversity of each country. It was such a treat to meet the guides at each of the port cities, who not only lived in those cities, but were very well-versed in the history and traditions of their native lands. The enjoyable experience was then extended into the dining room, where we were greeted by friendly faces, who honestly seemed to enjoy making sure we, as their guests, were having a good time and would not go away hungry. The wine and the beer were quite fitting for the part of Europe in which we were traveling. It was a wonderful and we are looking forward to planning another trip in the near future! Read Less

My brother and his wife invited us to join them and their extended family on this Danube River Cruise. We are so glad we went. We arrived in Munich 4 days before the cruise and thoroughly enjoyed the sights. While in Passau, our departure city, we had opportunity to explore it as we spent our first night on board the Viking VAR in Passau. Our embarkation went without a hitch. We were served a lunch and that was only the beginning of a week of personal attention. Food was delicious and portion sizes were just right, quality was so amazing with the fresh herbs from the rooftop deck. Every morning was a well organized walking tour of the city and upon re-entry to our ship, we were often greeted with a special treat in the form of food or beverages. No need to worry about bringing along water bottles or umbrellas as they were provided for us as we left the ship for our daily enriching experience. The VAR was top notch. Modern, clean and contemporary decor. One of the things we loved was the convenience of our proximity of our room to the dining hall and upstairs lounge. While in port, entertainment was brought on board several of the nights. Always entertaining and impressive with the quality and utilization of space available for their performances. We had a variety of shore excursions to choose from, each one very special including the unique Hungarian Horse Show and a visit to a family home in Slovakia learning from a first person perspective about the country during communist rule as well as how they make ends meet in current times. Each port held it's own educational and sight-seeing opportunities. We felt like our staff, especially the cruise director and servers gave us such personal attention. The staff musician was also talented and adapted well to the guests. Personal attention is a huge plus in the smaller number of guests in a Viking River Cruise. We can't wait to go on our next Viking Cruise. Read Less

We had heard nothing but raves about river cruising, but we were still pleasantly surprised by the outstanding service, food, and itinerary of our Rhine cruise from Basel to Amsterdam. It was quite obvious that Viking was determined to take care of every little detail from the time we booked the trip, arrived at the airport, during the entire week, and including the shuttle to our departure airport. There was never any confusion, delays, or anything that wasn't perfect on the Var. A simple pamphlet for each passenger contained all our flight, hotel, and daily itinerary information. Another small booklet detailed what we were passing along the Rhine, and kilometer signs were placed on each shore so it was easy to follow the sites. The Viking Daily listed each day's itinerary as well as historical information on the port. Loudspeaker announcements were kept to a minimum and mostly to announce departure times. For the first time, we let a cruise line make our flight plans and British Airways was excellent. We got to go on the newer Airbus 380 double-decker, and paying a bit more for Economy Plus was well worth it. The space, service, in-flight entertainment selections, and food were very good. Processing through Heathrow in London was a bit of a mess both directions, but thankfully we had plenty of time between flights. Meals, particularly dinner, were the main social events onboard. The menu, all beverages included, was very good. Even the "everyday" offering of chicken and steak was excellent. Usually from 7:30 to 9:00, this gave everyone plenty of time to meet fellow-cruisers. Also offered were music and dancing, a concert, glass-blower, and a presentation on the European Union. Each stop included a tour (Breisach-Black Forest, Strasbourg-Petite France to Cathedral Square, Heidelberg-Castle and town, Koblenz-Marksburg Castle, Cologne-Old City and Cathedral, Kinderdijk-windmills, and Amsterdam-old town. We took advantage of the pre-cruise stay in Lake Lucerne and post-cruise stay in Amsterdam. Met at Zurich airport upon landing and shuttled to the hotel, then shuttled from our last hotel in Amsterdam; no problems at either end-was impressed by Viking's planning. Both were at top-rate hotels, staffed by Viking personnel, and included orientation walks. Of particular note was the Mt. Titlis optional excursion in Lake Lucerne. It was a highlight of the entire trip with fantastic scenery up to the 10,000 ft. peak.   Read Less

Great trip that made is both eager to do another river cruise. The ship (Var) is very new as are most of the Viking ships. We spent three extra days in Amsterdam before the cruise, and really loved that very diverse and interesting city. We want to go back! The location of our hotel, Moevenpik (sp?) was excellent for access to the tram system, canal cruises, and embarkation on the Var. The various stops to and up the Rhine included Viking arranged bus and walking tours that were well planned and very interesting. Guides on those tours were excellent, especially in Cologne, Heidelberg , and Strasbourg. The top deck proved to be a wonderful place to relax and view the beautiful towns, castles, and vineyards as we cruised from stop to stop. Not enough good words exist to describe the service and food in the lounge and dining room. The staff is very well trained, attentive, and a delightful part of our experience. There were many choices for all meals, so I'm sure everyone was more than pleased. We found that cruising with only about 190 passengers on this ship was much more enjoyable for us than past ocean cruises with three to five thousand. We are now starting to plan for our next river cruise!   Read Less
