From all cruises my wife and I have taken in the past, none of them hold a candle to the accommodations and friendly staff that we experienced on this cruise with Viking. I was extremely impressed with Viking Air and the staff members that met us when we arrived and those who stayed with us till we left. The 3 day precruise visit to Prague was also impressive, with the 5 star hotel acommodations and Viking concierge. The excursions preselected by the cruise line were extremely informative and fun, even though temperatures remained in the 30s F. The food was outstanding in every way with specialized foods from regions we visited. I was concerned about sailing without the many venues and activities seen on larger boats, but my concerned was quickly suppressed in that the staff keeps you extremely busy every hour of each day. Most everyone on the boat were like us. A little apprehensive, but willing to make the best of our cruise. We watched out for one another and helped each other whenever we could. This was the winning solution of friendships made. Our dinner table started at 4, it quickly grew to 12, and still was not big enough to gather and share all our adventures. My wife keeps telling everyone that the cruise with Viking was the best vacation she has ever been on. We developed friendships with many new people, and still connecting online since the cruise. We have already booked another cruise with Viking for November 2020 Read Less

We had never been to that part of Europe, but were well aware of it’s history. We also had heard so much about European Christmas markets we wanted to see for ourselves. Our cruise included airfair,an upgraded room,at a great price.Service was first class from the airport in Budapest,to the airport in Munich, and everything in between. The cities we visited had incredible history and archtecture, our guides on the inluded tours were knowledgeable. The cities we visited were incredible, and most were worthy of a much longer stay,The Christmas markets were unique, but in the cities we visited on a weekend,Budapest, and Bratislava were shoulder to shoulder crowded, and consisted mostly of food and drink,we found the others to be more pleasant, but also consisted of a great many beverage and food stalls We also really enjoed the optional Huerigen abend in Vienna, which had plentiful food wine and great entertainment The crew on board ship were top notch,as was the food wine ,and beer.We had taken a viking ocean cruise, and were not disapointed in the River cruise. Friends who had been with Viking on a river cruise invited us to join them. Although we have traveled by air and ground transportation extensively through the years, it was our very first cruise experience on any size vessel. This experience has convinced us that a river cruise is the ONLY way to go! Every aspect of our Viking River Cruise experience was PERFECT....from the informative materials received beforehand, the initial procedures going onto the TOR..limited number of fellow passengers....every activity for the next eight days...the planning and execution were flawless! The variety of meal services, too, was a most welcome extra. Without exception, every single member of the ship's staff...from the Captain all the way down to the lowest ranking dining room waiter or member of the housekeeping staff...ALL were delightfully friendly and efficient. At the various towns where the ship stopped, local inhabitants and guides were provided who were attractive, entertaining and exceptionally well-prepared to provide fascinating information and stories about the town being visited. Several onboard presentations were also very entertaining. Two presentations, in particular, were EXCELLENT: (1) a lesson on how to prepare an apfel strudel...and (2) a talk given by a young woman on "What Germans are Like." In absolutely every respect, the Viking River Cruise was the experience of a lifetime...restful...educational...source of new friendships and memories. Read Less

Initially I chose this cruise because of the 2 for 1 deal. But after experiencing Viking, I would choose it even at full price. It was that good. Although, I hope I won't have to. My family and I are already planning the next cruise. Although the next time we will be taking a bigger family group with us. Everything from the fine dining on the ship, to the shore excursions, shopping, sights, sounds, history and the local cuisine as well was almost too much to take in for what seemed like too short of a time. We made new friends, played games on board, and truly wanted for nothing. The ships crew were all very professional and personal at the same time. We had an extra special treat too, it was the 1st voyage for our Captain with his OWN ship. He expertly got us through 26 locks and safely to each destination. If you haven't taken a Viking cruise yet and are reading this review, I hope it truly encourages you to take the plunge. You will NOT be disappointed. Read Less

Previously, I had been on one ocean cruise and did not prove to be a good sailor - green the whole week. With some trepidation, I tried the Romantic Danube cruise by Viking and it was a complete success! There is no dressing to impress on this river cruise (as there was on the ocean cruise by a different company). Casual comfort is the way to go. Now I know how to pack for next time - jeans, shorts, simple slacks, maybe a simple skirt or dress. Very relaxed. The size of the ship (about 100 guests) made for a wonderful ambiance. The passengers were very friendly and social, taking opportunities to meet and dine with others. The staff were so warm and hospitable, looking after our every need. Once, when we missed dinner, they prepared food for us. Beverages and snacks were always available. All of the meals were light and nutritious. The excursions were so well organized, interesting and used such charming, professional guides. Wished we had gone to Budapest 3 days early so we could have explored it in more detail but loved what we saw. The Gottweig Abbey in Austria was very memorable. Sailing in the Wachau Valley on a gorgeous fall day was so beautiful.I will never forget the Nuremberg War Trials excursion. Take advantage of the daily panoramic excursions. The 3 day extension in Prague was wonderful. This was my first river cruise...but NOT my last! Read Less

First time river cruise-- met and/or exceeded expectations. Did all the included tours and 5 additional. Tour guides were great and very knowledgeable . Service onboard was excellent. Food was also high quality Tour director Boris was the best. Never had to worry about anything. Looking forward to another river cruise in 2018 and already booked ocean cruise on viking in Jan 2018. Stayed in Prague for 3 days prior to cruise, very well worth it, in retrospect should have stayed three additional days in Budapest. The cabin was very nice, clean and well maintained. Upgraded to a two room suite, plenty of room, approximately 400 sq ft. Bathroom floors were heated, very nice amenitiy. Overall a great experience, very relaxing, however there were always plenty of activities if you wanted to do more. Do not think the beverage add on is worth the cost. You would have to drink a lot in addition to what is provided in order to justify cost Read Less

We chose Viking because we heard nothing but wonderful information regarding Viking from friends & associates. Everything their brochures and website said they would do or provide was completed with a smile and a positive attitude. We were met at the airport on time, immediately brought to the Viking Thor, welcomed and given simple details, escorted to our room which had champagne, beer, spirits, and fresh fruit awaiting us. Throughout the cruise the staff was there to explain all the events available, serve our needs, and provide small group tours (10 people at most) for the city tours at docking ports. The food was excellent, the chef explained daily what he would prepare for us. Comfort, relaxation, and warmth by the staff could not be any better. The best part is the fact that the Viking Thor only accommodates approximately 170 passengers enabling guest to intermingle and make new friends without being overwhelmed. Also, on our cruise there were no kids which made it a quiet cruise and enabling senior guests to not worry about children running and bumping into them. We plan on doing another cruise in 2018. We wanted a special adventure for our 50th Anniversary. We thoroughly enjoyed the fact that everything was provided, all the details were pre-arranged and we were able to relax and enjoy. The on-shore tours and local guides were excellent, on-board experience was wonderful, and the cities we visited were great. The pre-trip in Prague was a wonderful introduction for our trip. We enjoyed the walking opportunities in each location and participated in each of the provided on-shore tours. We also enjoyed several of the optional excursions as well as the opportunities to have some free time to explore on our own. The history, foods, culture, architecture and people were all very great experiences. The staff on-board went above and beyond to provide for us and were present when needed, but also unobtrusive and efficient. This has provided great value for the cost of our cruise. We highly recommend this cruise and would love to have another opportunity some day. Read Less

We chose this cruise, having been on Viking previously, to see places we had not been before. There seemed so much breadth in history and culture to see, and we were so very right. Simply riding the Danube on one of the wonderful Viking longships is worth it all by itself. But the opportunities to experience the areas through which we were passing has made lifetime memories, wonderful ones. Viking is absolutely wonderful at seamless movement from cruising to touring and back to cruising. We were able to see and do things with Viking that we would never have managed by ourselves, such as the 'just for Viking' concert of the largest pipe organ in the world at Passau. But were also free to 'do our own thing when we wanted, such as in Vienna, where we had been more than once. We did our own tour of favorite places, such as the Cafe Schwartzenberg, our favorite coffee house in Vienna. However, the joys of simply causing the river and watching new worlds go by tops my list. Wife chose the cruise from her travel "bucket list", we went as part of a group of active senior citizens. Viking Tor was an immaculate vessel staffed with an excellent Captain, crew, and attendants. Food rivaled the best restaurants - not a complaint from any of our 30-person party - staterooms were immaculately kept and very comfortable. We had a balcony cabin on the lower level and enjoyed the view from our location. The crew and staff were a cosmopolitan group with intimate knowledge of the ports and excursions we visited - many of them were native to the countries/cities. We have no doubt that we'd travel Viking again. I studied marine engineering at the United States Merchant Marine Academy and spent several months on each of four "Big Name" ships as part of the officer group. If There was anything out of order on this cruise (Even though it was a bit fragmented by the need to go to drydock for an unforseen repair), I'd know it. Read Less

We wanted to experience some of the best cities along the Danube River. However, we also wanted to spend some time in Prague before the cruise began. It was all absolutely super. The Hilton hotel was great - the restaurants were excellent - the tours were the best - - the one that comes to mind was at the Lobkowitz Palace. After the bus trip from Prague to Passau, It was great to unpack once and then begin one of the best cruises anyone could ask for. The crew, the food, the tours led by locals who knew what they're talking about, the new long ship boat, the accommodations - - everything - - was of the highest caliber. We loved the many churches and abbeys. We wished that we had more time in Vienna and Budapest was fabulous. I would highly recommend Viking to anyone considering taking a river cruise anywhere. As beginners with Viking River cruises, we thought the Danube experience would give us the opportunity to see several European countries and cities, especially Vienna and Budapest in a safe and convenient way. We thought that in our fiftieth year of marriage the trip would be a good way to celebrate ourselves. We took full advantage of the included tours and added the Vienna Mozart and Strauss music event as well as the Vienna chef's tour to the Noshmarkt. Our cabin was lovely, the evening entertainment shipboard was festive, the food always top-notch. I did minimal research on our cities of call, but learned much more with our time ashore. Staff members were more than cordial--began to feel like old friends. In a word, we felt "pampered" by the Viking experience. From the very beginning, we were met by staff upon arrival, escorted to our ship, welcomed warmly, and with each additional adventure, we learned about the history, culture, and people. Each guide in each city was informative but never "lecture--y." We enjoyed meeting other travelers, those from other U.S. states as well as Canada and Scotland. Wonderful trip. We were happy to see our servers and guides during our outings, and upon our return. The captain seemed happy to interact with guests, and a number of people visited the upper deck and the helm. Learning about the technology was interesting, too--the need for the wheelhouse to retract in order to fit under the low bridges was quite an engineering feat! Read Less

I am not very good at this type of thing. The ship was very good. Accommodations were very nice and comfortable. The people servicing the rooms were very friendly and polite. The food was excellent and very nicely prepared. Service was done very friendly and I can not express how nice the the people were taking care of us. It was a joy to go down to the eating area. My wife is on a wheat free diet and the waiter would greet her when we entered the dinning room and explain what they had prepared for her meal. His name was Nenard and we can not say enough about him. The Port and shore excursions along with the guides that were hired were just great. They lived in the area and grew up there. Explained and pointed out the history of where we were and were the best. The entertainment that came on the boat were really good. I wasn't expecting too much but turned out to be better than I expected. Travel arrangements were done very well. The busses to get you to the tours were safe and comfortable. We had to change ships in the middle of the trip and everything was handled extremely well. The only thing that was disappointing was we missed the people that were working in the dinning room and bedroom area. You tend to get attached to the first group that is taking care of you. Before I go on I have to mention our Tour Director who was outstanding. He really put in a lot of effort to make our trip run well. His name was Soirin from Romania. A truly wonderful person. The only down side I have to recommend is the following. When we changed ships we put our packed bags outside our rooms and they were picked up and transferred to or rooms on the new boat very nicely. We arrived to our rooms and were very impressed how well everything was done. To continue with this. We had a three day extension in Prague and stayed at the Sheraton Hotel. I would consider it adequate, the lighting in our room was poor. Couldn't get the lights bright enough and they were yellowish. The room was nice. The Viking representative was, once again, really great. The location of the Hotel was excellent. I have to commend Viking for the breakfast buffet at the Hotel. They kept everything the same as what was on the boat. The choices were almost exactly like the Viking ship. We really appreciated it. When we had to pack up and leave we were told to put our bags outside our rooms, as was done on the boat when we changed ships, in the morning by a certain time and they would be picked up and taken to the bus for the trip to the airport. THIS IS A SECURITY BREACH. You are asked at the airport if the bag has been out of your sight at anytime. I would recommend that you be told to take or carry your bag to the bus when leaving the Hotel. This procedure also lends to a bag being lost or stolen as what happened to my daughter and her bag. Other than that last glitch, the trip was fantastic and would love to do it again if I could ever afford it. My age is getting up there, 77, and don't think it will happen again. I have promoted your Viking Tours to everyone That I have met and A few of my retired pilots from my company will be taking tours. I will never forget our Viking trip. Read Less

We took the Danube River cruise from Nuremberg to Budapest in early July. We also went on the Prague extension prior to the cruise. The Viking staff was outstanding, meeting us at the airport in Prague and being available in the hotel lobby during the day. The tour of Prague was arduous, but it is a beautiful city and I'm glad we took it. The bus ride from Prague to Nuremberg took us through the German countryside which was very interesting. We found the accommodations to be acceptable. We had a French balcony, which doesn't have a balcony, but we didn't spend much time in our room. The room was small but very clean. The staff is very attentive and goes out of their way to meet your needs. When I boarded the ship, I informed the chef that I am a vegan; he prepared special entrees for me for lunch and dinner each day and our waiter made sure that I had soy milk for my breakfast cereal. The excursions were very interesting although some of the tour guides were a bit long-winded. My husband and I escaped one day and wandered into a beautiful church with black altars that no one else on the tour saw. The tours were more difficult for us because the temperature every day was over 95 degrees, except for the day we were in Vienna when it rained. I wish we had stayed for the extra time in Budapest. We loved the city and spent only a day there. We took the optional tour of the Jewish district in Pest which was well worth it for the beautiful synagogue and the exhibits. The memorials to victims of the holocaust are truly outstanding. Read Less

This was our first Viking cruise and, overall, we were quite impressed. We liked the dining options and the food was always good (with several choices), so was the wine. The excursions were well planned, the guides were generally quite good, knowledgeable and their English was easy to understand, and the buses were clean and comfortable. Only comment is that there sometimes was not sufficient time to see more of the sights, particularly in cathedrals, museums, etc. - a few times it seemed like we were a bit rushed. The one disappointment was that for a good part of the cruise, the internet was not working which prevented us from sending messages and photos to folks back home - and even once they got it working again, sometimes it was spotty as far as getting connected in the cabin. We opted for the pre-cruise extension in Montreux and that was just a great experience, especially the accommodations in the Montreux palace. Sorry you will be dropping that extension. Suggestion: for land extensions, can Viking provide, before the trip, a list of suggested restaurants with e-mail contacts if one wants to make an advance dinner reservation for a special occasion (we celebrated our 50th anniversary in Montreux), as well as recommended attractions to permit some pre-planning. Overall, we were extremely happy with the cruise and will definitely want to sail with Viking again. Read Less
