Initially I chose this cruise because of the 2 for 1 deal. But after experiencing Viking, I would choose it even at full price. It was that good. Although, I hope I won't have to. My family and I are already planning the next cruise. Although the next time we will be taking a bigger family group with us. Everything from the fine dining on the ship, to the shore excursions, shopping, sights, sounds, history and the local cuisine as well was almost too much to take in for what seemed like too short of a time. We made new friends, played games on board, and truly wanted for nothing. The ships crew were all very professional and personal at the same time. We had an extra special treat too, it was the 1st voyage for our Captain with his OWN ship. He expertly got us through 26 locks and safely to each destination. If you haven't taken a Viking cruise yet and are reading this review, I hope it truly encourages you to take the plunge. You will NOT be disappointed. Read Less

As beginners with Viking River cruises, we thought the Danube experience would give us the opportunity to see several European countries and cities, especially Vienna and Budapest in a safe and convenient way. We thought that in our fiftieth year of marriage the trip would be a good way to celebrate ourselves. We took full advantage of the included tours and added the Vienna Mozart and Strauss music event as well as the Vienna chef's tour to the Noshmarkt. Our cabin was lovely, the evening entertainment shipboard was festive, the food always top-notch. I did minimal research on our cities of call, but learned much more with our time ashore. Staff members were more than cordial--began to feel like old friends. In a word, we felt "pampered" by the Viking experience. From the very beginning, we were met by staff upon arrival, escorted to our ship, welcomed warmly, and with each additional adventure, we learned about the history, culture, and people. Each guide in each city was informative but never "lecture--y." We enjoyed meeting other travelers, those from other U.S. states as well as Canada and Scotland. Wonderful trip. We were happy to see our servers and guides during our outings, and upon our return. The captain seemed happy to interact with guests, and a number of people visited the upper deck and the helm. Learning about the technology was interesting, too--the need for the wheelhouse to retract in order to fit under the low bridges was quite an engineering feat! Read Less

This cruise was very well enjoyed by everyone in our party. We had three balcony rooms in our group. We booked late and there were no lower categories available. The accommodations were very nice and the crew/staff were excellent. Granted, we did have some problems, none of which were the fault of Viking. However, they handled them all very well. The first problem was a strike by Lufthansa four days before our flight. I was glad I booked the trip with inclusive air as it would have been MY nightmare trying to reschedule flights instead of theirs. They booked us on another airline and it was fine. The water level in the Danube was too low for the ship to make it to Budapest so we were put on it's sister ship on the second night. The first night they put us up in a very nice hotel. Again, everything was handled very professionally and smoothly by Viking. Yes, we had to take a coach to the ship and again at another point but the coaches they use are first class. The person who claimed there wasn't enough to eat or that there was no entertainment obviously isn't sophisticated enough for this type of cruise. Having done the big ships to the Caribbean, it was refreshing to travel on this small boat with a lot less people. The food was wonderful as was the service. If you were hungry on this trip, you must have a tapeworm. I had asked for more pillows on the first night aboard and when we switched ships midweek, my extra pillows were already in the room and didn't have start over with the new crew. I know that time of year is iffy for the weather but we had great weather. Each day they take you on a tour in the morning and then you can sign up for an optional tour in the afternoon. We are in our late 40's and lead pretty active lives and felt like we did plenty each day. We had folks in their mid 70's to 80 in our party and they did pretty well keeping up. They have separate tours that cater to those who are slower moving if you feel you can't keep up or you can just sit on the ship and look at the scenery. Plenty of places for a good view. They have local tour guides at each stop and some are better than others but overall they were all good and it gives you a good overview of each place the ship stops. I'm usually too cheap to do the all inclusive but in this instance, I'm glad I did. They pick you up from the airport and take care of you until they help you check in for your return flight home. No thinking necessary, just sit back and enjoy! Read Less

We spent much of our "cruise" riding around in buses. If I had wanted to take a bus tour it would have been less expensive. We spent a day and a half traveling by bus consequently we had much less time to,spend at our destinations. We were lied to by Viking. We had heard there were problems with the water level in the Danube prior to,our departure. We subsequently called Viking and were told everything was fine for the cruise. We traveled the same route by bus 3 times. The only concession they made for our inconvenience was one night of free drinks on the ship. We paid extra for a room with a view, What a huge waste of money. When we were docked it was usually in between 2 other Viking ships so our view was into another room on a different ship. When traveling by bus we were with 5 other buses so each time we stopped for a break there were all the other passengers as well as buses from other cruises. It was a nightmare, lines for the rest rooms and for snacks. Don't be fooled by their advertising that this is a luxury cruise. It is definitely NOT. If you are considering taking a cruise do your research. There are many other options besides Viking. Read Less

We had such a remarkable experience on our first Viking tour on the Seine, Paris to Normandy. We were delighted to have the opportunity to tour an area of Europe that was new to us. Arriving in Budapest we were met at the airport and transported with ease to the boat. Like so many others in 2015, we had to disembark and board another boat due to the low water level of the Danube. So we experienced two boats, the Var and the Tor. The crew made this transition seamless, our only chore was a few moments of packing and unpacking. Viking more than made up for the unavoidable inconvenience by providing extra perks. Both boats were clean and comfortable, the staff exceptional. The food was nicely presented and reflected the local cuisine. The local tour guides were knowledgeable and entertaining. The Viking crew were equally helpful. The daily briefings and programs were educational and entertaining. Disembarkation was easy though there was some confusion at the Nuremberg airport when so many of us arrived at such a small facility before the airport was fully staffed. In hindsight I would have liked a bit more time in Budapest and Vienna, the tours were whirlwind. It would have also been nice if we could have simply walked from the boat directly into the cities and towns more often than not. Viking has no control over this as it is the nature of the docking locations. As a result there seemed to be more bus time than the Seine trip. Overall, it was a wonderful trip and we have recommended it to several friends. Read Less

I have done at least 8 higher end cruises and had come to expect you get what you pay for. Not on Viking, so save your dollars and book on a cheaper line. I booked for the Romantic Danube on the longship Tor in June of 2015. For the $$$$ spent, I expected above average cruise line food, attention to detail and amenities. What I actually got was mediocre food that was "re-invented" the next day for the luncheon buffet and some meals I could have had better at my local diner. There was no cabin service for any meal, no coffee machine in the room and you were expected to get up and ready for the only tours that started at 8 AM. For all the hype of seeing castles, etc, what you actually get is more a brief glimpse as the castles are quickly speed by while a quick talk is done. Most time is spent in locks, which means the sundeck is off limits to all passengers. That also means, that there are less views of the scenery quickly going by. If you are a smoker, you are not a welcome guest. There are restrictions on where you are allowed to smoke on ship. Since the sundeck is unavailable 90% of the time, you are confined to a small vestibule. There you also get to be harassed by nonsmokers. Of course, there are plenty of hidden smokers, and as the only visible, upfront smoker, the staff accused me of smoking in forbidden areas. (It was amazing on the last full day, how many actual smokers out on the now open sundeck... I counted 15 people including a group with a hookah) Could they have been the ones smoking on their verandas??? Read Less

This was a wonderful cruise and my favorite of the three we have done with Viking. The hotel manager was warm, friendly and very attentive. Daniel, the program director was knowledgeable, helpful, and informative. The choice of excursions was varied and wide, with interesting and fun activities. At Melk, we would have loved more time! But that is most always the case. We participated in many and so enjoyed the opera! Yes, it was an adaptation, but a good one and the length was perfect, even for the non opera person!! The ship was lovely, immaculate and well equipped. The staff was most pleasant and helpful. Read Less
