This is our 4th Viking River Cruise, and we chose this itinerary because although we had visited much of Europe, we had never been to these cities. I was quite concerned before the trip regarding the water level on the Danube due to problems last year, but there were no issues. We came to Budapest a couple of days early and did some touring on our own, including a fun up close and personal Tuk Tuk tour. The embarkation went smoothly and we had a nice but small balcony cabin. All of the staff were excellent, from our waiters to our steward and we went on many of the excursions, as we recognized we are unlikely to come this way again. The food was fine and entertainment minimal other than a Mozart and Strauss concert excursion in Vienna and a folklore dinner in Prague. The captain was everywhere saying hello to all the guests which I haven't seen on a cruise before. The highlight for all of us (we were traveling with son and dil) was the Prague extension which was far more interesting than we expected. The architecture is outstanding and the tours were interesting. My dil developed a toothache, and the host in Prague at our hotel actually arranged for an emergency dental appointment near the hotel and accompanied her to see the dentist helping to translate. We were very grateful for this service. I have absolutely no criticisms of this trip. However, without the Prague extension, I would have given it 4 circles as it wasn't as exciting as prior Viking trips which I attribute to the nature of these cities rather than any faults on Viking's part. We had never been to that part of Europe, but were well aware of it’s history. We also had heard so much about European Christmas markets we wanted to see for ourselves. Our cruise included airfair,an upgraded room,at a great price.Service was first class from the airport in Budapest,to the airport in Munich, and everything in between. The cities we visited had incredible history and archtecture, our guides on the inluded tours were knowledgeable. The cities we visited were incredible, and most were worthy of a much longer stay,The Christmas markets were unique, but in the cities we visited on a weekend,Budapest, and Bratislava were shoulder to shoulder crowded, and consisted mostly of food and drink,we found the others to be more pleasant, but also consisted of a great many beverage and food stalls We also really enjoed the optional Huerigen abend in Vienna, which had plentiful food wine and great entertainment The crew on board ship were top notch,as was the food wine ,and beer.We had taken a viking ocean cruise, and were not disapointed in the River cruise. Top notch experience all the way around. We were met at the airport as scheduled and the tour began without a hitch. Our cruise was unaffected by low water and we were able to complete our itinerary as scheduled. The Christmas Markets were great fun, we participated in every excursion, and met some ah-mazing people over dinner and drinks each night. Don’t miss Cesky Krumlov if given the opportunity. We toured on a Sunday so there was less traffic and we were able to enjoy “Little Prague” longer. My 20-something daughter fell in love with Budapest and can’t wait to go back for a longer stay. We chose to sit with the same waiter each evening and Vlad worked hard to remember our particular likes and dislikes. He was one of the highlights of being onboard. Our cabin was roomy enough for two and the heated bathroom floors were such a luxury. The common areas were perfect for watching the countryside as we cruised by—we enjoyed unlimited hot tea and sweets while relaxing in the lounge. During some of our downtime, we enjoyed catching up on Downton Abbey in anticipation of the movie set to be released. While we did not require a lot of staff attention, they were friendly, accommodating, informative and quite fun. Would definitely choose Viking again for river cruising and look forward to sailing with them again. Read Less

Friends who had been with Viking on a river cruise invited us to join them. Although we have traveled by air and ground transportation extensively through the years, it was our very first cruise experience on any size vessel. This experience has convinced us that a river cruise is the ONLY way to go! Every aspect of our Viking River Cruise experience was PERFECT....from the informative materials received beforehand, the initial procedures going onto the TOR..limited number of fellow passengers....every activity for the next eight days...the planning and execution were flawless! The variety of meal services, too, was a most welcome extra. Without exception, every single member of the ship's staff...from the Captain all the way down to the lowest ranking dining room waiter or member of the housekeeping staff...ALL were delightfully friendly and efficient. At the various towns where the ship stopped, local inhabitants and guides were provided who were attractive, entertaining and exceptionally well-prepared to provide fascinating information and stories about the town being visited. Several onboard presentations were also very entertaining. Two presentations, in particular, were EXCELLENT: (1) a lesson on how to prepare an apfel strudel...and (2) a talk given by a young woman on "What Germans are Like." In absolutely every respect, the Viking River Cruise was the experience of a lifetime...restful...educational...source of new friendships and memories. Read Less

Never have I ever been on a vacation where everything went as expected and then some. From the days we booked in Budapest before our cruise to time we spent onboard, it was a first rate experience. The crew made us feel as though we were a priority. At first the attention was a bit overwhelming to a mom who is not used to being pampered... but after many reassurances, from the crew that this was how it was going to be, I settled in to the “royal” treatment. The gourmet meals, the shore tours, the entertainment, the cabin care were exceptional. Our meals were more than just eating delicious foods. Every time we sat down we were not only fed but also entertained by our waiters. This experience was probably one of the best vacations we ever took - that impression has us anxious to book our next cruise. Read Less

Friends suggested starting in Budapest. Actually we stayed in an Airbnb for 4 days in Budapest prior to boarding. We fell in love with Budapest; enjoying every minute we were there! On to the cruise. BTY this was my first cruise and I'm in my 60's. We found the accommodations, while small, expertly laid out and comfortable! Bear in mind, we are used to sailing a 43' sailboat. The room was clean upon arrival and cleaned daily. Good job to the housekeeping staff! In fact all the staff were absolutely fantastic; friendly and professional! The dinning was very good, providing sufficient choices to keep my wife and I happy. Having been told that I can be a little picky, I can say without reservation there was nothing I found to complain about! I would suggest if you take a river cruise, get a room with a balcony; we did and I think any room without, would seem claustrophobic. Anyway, sitting on the balcony with a cup of coffee or drink, watching the scenic view pass by was amazing! This is a great way to experience Europe in comfort! Read Less

Our first river cruise. It was very good! Now. It was the Viking TOR - a small ship - not what ocean cruisers are used to. Everything is smaller and limited. The staterooms are smaller, the public spaces are smaller, and the dining room is smaller. Gotta deal with that if you were just last on the Oasis. River cruising is smaller and more intimate. 190 folks on our cruise. The ship and the staff were excellent. Could not have asked for more. I could have asked more from fellow sailors who were somewhat rude. I am always amused and set aghast by folks who rush in at the buffet and cut in as if there will be no food left. We are all here in this (and there's lot's of food). 5 minutes or so is of no import. CHILL. How fat can you get? We enjoyed our river cruise. The only downside was dinner seating. Open seating is really not that. It's a mad scramble to get to a table and fight off folks you don't want sitting with you so you can sit and dine with folks you know and love. We were a bit late one night and could not sit with our friends, Viking could easily fix this by allowing folks to reserve tables at booking and leave the rest open. No brainier. The crew and wait staff were outstanding. The lounge was large enough to accommodate everyone and there were evening activities after dinner as well as a short briefing on the next days activities given by the cruise director who was very helpful. The excursions were quite enjoyable and included at no extra charge in the base fare with well informed local tour guides in each port with audio receivers for each guest that you brought from your room and they worked nicely. There was only one optional excursion for a fee in Nuremberg to the war crime trial museum and courtroom. Each excursion was about 3-4 hrs. with free time after. Of course the highlight of the cruise was being able to visit the Christmas Market in each port. Each was enjoyable and a bit different. That was wonderful since that was the purpose of this cruise at Christmas time!! Read Less

My mother who is 86 years old, has been wanting to go on a Viking River cruise for years. I received an email from Viking about two discounted cruises, one of which was on the Danube. My mother has always wanted to see Budapest and Vienna. When I told her about the Viking Cruise, the great price, and that I would go with her on the cruise, she was elated. We chose to take the extended stay in Budapest prior to the cruising date. We both agreed that this was the best thing that we have ever done together. Budapest was more than we ever expected. Viking arranged our stay at the Budapest Marriott, which is located directly on the Danube. We had an unbelievable view of the Danube and the Palace across the river, that was lighted every night. Viking offered us optional guided tours of Budapest each day that we did purchase at a minimal cost. The Marriott Hotel was excellently appointed the staff was pleasant and helpful. A complete buffet breakfast was included for each day that we stayed. This cruise was a dream come true for my mother, we loved every experience; from the extended stay in Budapest to the exciting tours in Vienna. On board, we enjoyed the Viking room accommodations; the excellent meals; the wine and music provided every evening; the friendly Viking staff; and last but not least the wonderful friends that we made on the cruise. Took the Nurenburg to Budapest tour with the prague extension. Great wait staff, great food, but many internal problems. Checked out of Prague Hilton at the mandatory 10am checkout to board a bus at 1pm. They refused to offer a checkout extension, and 70 people spent 3 hours wandering the lobby and outside, because of their poor scheduling. A third of their on board tv channels don't work. All we could watch was bbc news and cnn. The internet service is worse than cheap dialup, if it works at all. We did the majority of our water traveling at night, so forget about casually sitting on your deck watching the scenery. Some of the optional tours are run at the same times as the regularly scheduled tours, so you can't do both and have to choose between one and the other. They cancel some optional tours if not enough people enroll, so a tour you have been looking forward to go on, you may never see, because of their cheapness in honoring optional tours unless they have a minimum number of 15 takers. Don't pick a young guide, for they are not, well versed. Select one at least 40, for the new ones aren't as knowledgeable as the older ones. When dining, pick the smaller restaurant on the upper forward level of the boat rather than the main dining room. They give you a little less eating selections, but it is worth it to get the great personal service. Pick your optional tours before getting on the boat, and pick them more than 7 days before departure, for they charge you in euros rather in dollars, when you pay on the boat. What they call bier is not the reqular german beer-it is manufactured especially for americans and has less alcohol content than the native beer.Go ashore to sample the bier. https://fr.tripadvisor.ca/ShowUserReviews-g274887-d2075771-r359135515-Judit_Guia_Turistica_Budapest-Budapest_Central_Hungary.html# Read Less

This was our first river cruise and my wife and I loved it. Also, this was our first time overseas so the whole experience was one to remember for a lifetime. The Viking Tor was nicely appointed, clean and easy to get around on. We went when the Christmas Markets were open and that was fabulous! We are planning on another cruise with Viking in the not to distant future. To add to the enjoyment, the food, entertainment and informational gatherings were excellent. To see the history of Germany and be able to here our guide with the earphone receiver was a great help to so that a person could hear the whole commentary clearly. We had a delay in our departure from Denver, but Viking worked to rebook our flights and we made the ship in plenty of time. The people were most friendly and helpful and we look forward to river cruising again. Read Less

We got to Budapest too late to do much of anything. The Danube River ( which Viking never tells you even when asked) was low which we now know is common. We were forced to change boats from the Tor to the Var and couldn't use top deck most days. It was the best place to enjoy the scenery and relax and get some fresh air so very missed. Because of the low water this turned into packing, a long bus trip, and unpacking. The second boat,Var, was not as clean and the crew seemed tired...never really felt the service was the same. Lots of little requests were ignored...shampoo, coffee, wine and you felt like they were always ready for the clients to leave so they could get on with whatever they wanted to be doing. Others have said theirs turned into a bus trip so maybe we were better off with only being bused to the new ship and missinga part of the day. The tours were crowded but OK...never enough time to actually spend time really seeing the places. The organ concert was dry though the church was lovely...would have enjoyed seeing more of it and less of the funerial music. This was an anniversary trip and I have to say we were disappointed. Not ever going there again. Planning to go to Normandy and really hoping we get plenty of time at the beaches and a great guide. We are looking into other companies as Viking seems to be cutting corners and charging more...even some fees for side trips. This is not part of their advertising. Things that were included now have to be asked for in order to get. I was stung by something on the transfer bus and when I got to the ship I couldn't even get a tape for it. Read Less

We are 6 people who have travelled together for many years and having done several ocean cruises, we decided to try out the Romantic Danube with Viking River Cruise especially after having seen several of their commercials on TV (which are not very accurate). Everything was booked through a travel agent, who during the process of the reservation told us if we wanted to all be on the same flights, Viking was giving us a surcharge of $100.00 for one of the couples, which we did not appreciate. Three weeks before our departure, and at this point the trip is completely paid up, one of our travelling companions died. She was travelling with her sister in law who decided to come on the trip just the same. So, as already mentioned, the cost of their room was fully paid for 2, however Viking advised her that if she was travelling on her own, she had a surcharge of $3,369.00 because that was the cost for a single person. I told them that they were a heartless money gouging company and that they should have compassionnate rules and regulations. The profit they made on this room is ridiculous. On ocean cruises you spend several hours in buses to get to your excursions, and as Viking's commercials say: "Take less time getting there and more time being there" - this is not the case. A few days before our departure, we got an email informing us that we would not be travelling on Viking Var, but rather on Viking Tor because of low water levels, which I can understand is completely out of Viking's control. However, there was never any mention we would have to change ships half way through the trip. We boarded Viking Tor in Budapest, unpacked our bags and went to our first information meeting and that is when we got our surprise. We were informed that half way through our trip we would have to change ships. This meant repacking our bags, taking 2 long bus rides, and unpacking again. The compensation they gave us was one free drink after dinner, which meant most passengers did not benefit from this as after these long bus rides, everyone was too tired to go for a drink. Most of the tours are done in buses and the crowds at each of the excursions are just as bad as on an ocean cruise. So you spend a lot of time waiting for people who need to go to the washroom...Some of the guides are interesting and some are not. We truly expected to see much more than we did with fewer people as they show you in their commercials. I have to admit, the staff on both Var and Tor were amazing, which made up for some of our disappointments. Viking knew very well that there were water level problems, but they chose not to mention this to us and did not really compensate for this very big inconvenience. So for us it was a first and last time experience with Viking which we found to be over priced as it did not meet our expectations. And for everything mentioned above, we will not be recommending Viking to any of our friends and family. Read Less

I am not very good at this type of thing. The ship was very good. Accommodations were very nice and comfortable. The people servicing the rooms were very friendly and polite. The food was excellent and very nicely prepared. Service was done very friendly and I can not express how nice the the people were taking care of us. It was a joy to go down to the eating area. My wife is on a wheat free diet and the waiter would greet her when we entered the dinning room and explain what they had prepared for her meal. His name was Nenard and we can not say enough about him. The Port and shore excursions along with the guides that were hired were just great. They lived in the area and grew up there. Explained and pointed out the history of where we were and were the best. The entertainment that came on the boat were really good. I wasn't expecting too much but turned out to be better than I expected. Travel arrangements were done very well. The busses to get you to the tours were safe and comfortable. We had to change ships in the middle of the trip and everything was handled extremely well. The only thing that was disappointing was we missed the people that were working in the dinning room and bedroom area. You tend to get attached to the first group that is taking care of you. Before I go on I have to mention our Tour Director who was outstanding. He really put in a lot of effort to make our trip run well. His name was Soirin from Romania. A truly wonderful person. The only down side I have to recommend is the following. When we changed ships we put our packed bags outside our rooms and they were picked up and transferred to or rooms on the new boat very nicely. We arrived to our rooms and were very impressed how well everything was done. To continue with this. We had a three day extension in Prague and stayed at the Sheraton Hotel. I would consider it adequate, the lighting in our room was poor. Couldn't get the lights bright enough and they were yellowish. The room was nice. The Viking representative was, once again, really great. The location of the Hotel was excellent. I have to commend Viking for the breakfast buffet at the Hotel. They kept everything the same as what was on the boat. The choices were almost exactly like the Viking ship. We really appreciated it. When we had to pack up and leave we were told to put our bags outside our rooms, as was done on the boat when we changed ships, in the morning by a certain time and they would be picked up and taken to the bus for the trip to the airport. THIS IS A SECURITY BREACH. You are asked at the airport if the bag has been out of your sight at anytime. I would recommend that you be told to take or carry your bag to the bus when leaving the Hotel. This procedure also lends to a bag being lost or stolen as what happened to my daughter and her bag. Other than that last glitch, the trip was fantastic and would love to do it again if I could ever afford it. My age is getting up there, 77, and don't think it will happen again. I have promoted your Viking Tours to everyone That I have met and A few of my retired pilots from my company will be taking tours. I will never forget our Viking trip. Read Less
