My wife and I had taken a Viking River Cruise a couple of years ago and were excited to find that the company had gone into the sea cruising business. We were somewhat late in signing up for this cruise but found that the rear Explorer Suite was available. The reputation of Viking and our personal experience gave us great confidence that our money would be well spent. This proved to be true in nearly every segment of the cruise. Our early boarding was nicely done as our luggage arrived at our room in a very timely fashion. There was one problem which took time to resolve. The obligatory picture of each of us upon boarding for the first time apparently failed to register. We had to stand in a fairly long line to have that resolved which kept us from our room for about an extra hour. Once in however, we were made comfortable by our extraordinary Stewardess, Jackie. The Suite was beautiful and comfortable as I discuss in the box below. My wife had a hip problem that caused her to be uncomfortable in the two chairs provided in the room. We saw deeper chairs in the room next door and asked Jackie about exchanging one of ours for one similar to what we saw. Ten minutes later Jackie and her partner had the new chair set up and the other one gone. We were pleased to no end. This was just a sample of the extremely courteous, thoughtful service she provided throughout our voyage. The ship itself is the most beautiful and functional we have been on. Great care has been put into considering the comfort of the passengers and offering a different style of cruising from that of the competition. The dining experience was one of recognizing what was great and what was ordinary. I thought the seafood was outstanding and the beef dishes to be ordinary. This might be something to look to upgrading. The specialty restaurants were mixed, I felt.Manfredi's Restaurant was superb in both food and décor. The Chef's Table was okay except for the problem that causes the passengers to pick the date they want to be at that restaurant many weeks in advance without, as we found out, any knowledge of the style of food to be served at that sitting. We were fortunate to change our sitting to a different night when we found out that reindeer was not on our list of exciting food choices. I do suggest that something be done to allow passengers to have better information prior to making a choice on the Chef's Table. The port excursions were uniformly excellent. We loved them all. I particularly liked the trek across the headlands at Kirkwall in the Orkneys and Scara Brae. Our tour of Dublin afforded us the opportunity to see, hear and sing along with the best single day guide we have ever had. His name is Sam Ford and he is the best. Others were top notch as well. Needless to say, my wife and I will continue to patronize Viking Cruises both on the rivers and at sea. Our experience was the best ever and it is little wonder that the latest Travel and Leisure rates Viking Sea Cruises head and shoulders above the competition and with the highest rated ships of any size. Thank you for a most wonderful time aboard the Viking Sun. Read Less

This trip was everything and more that one would expect from Viking. It was our first ocean experience with them although we've done two Viking river cruises. From the time we arrived at the Port of Miami until we were loaded on buses for the LA airport, it was indeed the trip of a life time. This ship was simply spectacular! We were very hesitant to book an ocean cruise as the idea of a floating hotel of 2-3,000 passengers did not excite us. We were even skeptical of Vikings 930 passengers. That apprehension quickly disappeared, as we never felt like we had that many fellow cruisers. There are so many 'intimate' areas throughout the ship where people can read, chill out, play cards . . . We booked an Explorer suite and WOW, it was nothing short of amazing. The layout and amount of space was incredible. The dining options really appealed to us. We don't mind buffet style for breakfast and lunch but enjoy a traditional sit down with wait staff for dinner. It would be hard to chose between Manfredi's and The Chef's Table, as both offered fine dining with separate twists. The Chef's Table was SO intimate and we met the chef each time we dined there (6), which was quite special. Manfredi's offered a wonderful Italian style menu with beautiful wines - we enjoyed it almost a dozen times in our 23 day cruise. On board entertainment is not particularly important to us but we did attend about 6 evening performances, which were really quite good. Unfortunately we were looking forward to The Kitchen Table excursion but it was not available on this trip. Instead, cooking classes were offered on sea days and we attended 3. We had SUCH a good time. The classroom is state of the art and with only 8-10 participants, it's just a really interesting 3 hours. Most of the on-shore excursions were educational and interesting but there were a few duds - particularly Nicaragua. We also felt that we spent too much time in Cuba, and wish that one of the Cuba days would have been added to Costa Rica, Cabo or even Guatemala. Cienfuegos was a very disappointing first port of call. The primary reason for us booking this cruise was going through the Panama Canal and we were not disappointed. We were both very prepared for this part of our cruise, having both read the book "The Path Between the Seas." The excursion the day before cruising the canal was great as we got a local look at both sides of the canal and the actual experience of going through the locks, experiencing this enormous feat of mankind, was beyond superlatives. We enjoyed this cruise so much that on the second day, we booked the Alaska cruise for 2019 and booked the exact same room! If we could afford it, we would have booked several. Read Less

We were returning from a driving tour of Scandinavia. The timing of the cruise met our needs. Viking River Cruise experienced; looking forward to a Viking ship. The Viking Sun is a first class experience. Right sized. Lots of space. Area for improvement- on board booking for future sailings. After an informative one hour overview, only one representative on board, was insufficient. No email contact. Response to a hand written inquiry on a 2018 cruise from Tokyo to Vancouver was via a voicemail to our Cabin. No return voicemail available. We were advised we were ‘wait listed’. Would receive no on ship booking incentives. Oh well. That said... The overall facilities are fantastic. The Crew was well educated with experience on Regent and Celebrity where we had sailed. We continually thanked the Crew for their ever present smiles and thoughtfulness. Looking forward to our next Viking Salinger experience. Alaska? Asia? Read Less

Everything was perfect. Excellent room - Penthouse Jr suite , Fantastic food, excellent crew and no crowds .You always felt welcomed by the entire staff no matter where you were on the ship. Everyone was so helpful and polite. The Penthouse suite was so comfortable and spacious with every possible amenity. The bathroom had double sinks , heated floors and towel rack. The room had two separate areas - each with it's own big flat screen TV. A spacious balcony with table and chairs and a great view. We were on the forward, starboard side of the boat on the top floor. It was extremely quite and private but yet accessible to everything. The food was first class all the way as was the wait staff. Nothing was a problem and they were always there to help through out the meal. When you asked for something specific your wish was always granted. All and All you can not do better than a Viking Ocean Cruise. We love Viking so much we just booked 2 Viking Cruises over the next year. When you are with the Best stay with the Best !!!! Read Less

After sailing with Viking on their river cruises, we were excited to try their ocean cruises. The ship is FANTASTIC!!! Clean, modern and beautiful. The service is superb and the food is amazing. Our cabin was large and we enjoyed the balcony where we ate breakfast every day. Our steward was so nice; every time we left our cabin, he would clean and organize for us. We begged him to come home with us. The pools are great and we meet many new friends. We visited Cuba and we were very happy to learn about the country; the guides were very nice and very open in our discussion. And as usual many of the excursions were included. We have reserved another cruise with Viking this fall. The advantage of cruisng with Viking is that we know in advance that it will be amazing!!! We plan to cruise with Viking once a year from now on. Read Less

What I loved about this cruise and ship: *new, wonderfully laid out ship design *clean, elegant, understated ship design *comfortable accommodations with balcony *best cruise food ever (compared to 3 other cruise lines) *Norwegian waffles! English tea! *enjoyed free amenities, including WiFi and spa facilities *wine served during lunch and dinner, no extra charge *specialty restaurants, no extra charge *beautiful library and lookout *nice stop at quaint islands of the Azores and Bermuda, no charge for excursion My husband and I took this trip after seeing multiple top reviews on the Viking ocean cruises. There were comments about the cruise lines targeting mature (and yes) sophisticated travelers, it didn’t bother us because we enjoy quiet, non-chaotic vacations. While we’ve cruised several times before, this was our first booking the flight through the cruise line. Viking chose a good airline, though in retrospect we should have planned a few extra days predeparture in Lisbon. I would highly recommend this cruise line to those who appreciate a more quiet luxury and all-inclusive value. Read Less

We chose this Mediterranean cruise because it offered 11 ort stops counting Rome. Unfortunately we missed one, Marseille, due to stormy weather. We experienced amazingly good weather except for that one overnight. This new ship is totally awesome, and perfect in every way. Lots of comfortable area, indoors and out, to sit and relax. The cabin was perfectly laid out with plenty of closet space, a large bathroom with heated floor, large shower and lots of towels. Good lighting and a large vanity with excellent storage shelves and drawers. The bed was amazing with lovely, fresh linens. Had a great sleep every night. The sitting area was comfortable with two chairs, a coffee table and desk. The balcony had comfy furniture and was a good size. The food was excellent quality, delicious with a huge variety including a sushi bar. There were many excellent choices of seafood every day as well as meat and vegetables, and all cooked to perfection. Breakfast offered an egg station where you could order any type of eggs. Eggs Benedict was offered every day. We experienced tours that were inclusive and ones we purchased. Every tour was top notch with excellent guides. Two times we did experience poor buses with dirty windows and torn seats. This was the only negative on the whole vacation. Viking staff are the best...they are organized, polite, friendly and intuitive. They make every effort to get to know you and provide you with your every need. They are an amazing group of people and I cannot commend them enough. They are the best part if the cruise. We did the pre cruise stay in Rome which was lovely. The Grand Hotel Palace was situated perfectly, although thought it was rather expensive for the room type we had. Very basic room. No coffee maker and no coffee available in the lobby. Breakfast was poor. We were not given any suggestions when we inquired about excursions (from host) other than we could share a taxi with others. We did manage ok on our own with the hop on-off bus and did enjoy this part of our vacation. Just thought it was expensive for what we received when compared with other Viking pre and post stays purchased in the past. Read Less

We chose this cruise because of Viking's excellent reputation for river cruising and hoped it carried over to the ocean. It did - everything about this brand new ship is beautiful. The artful design of every space is stunning. The amenities are all you can ask for and the service is warm, friendly and efficient. Mark the cruise director could not be more pleasant. The excursions have all been very informative and enjoyable. The included excursion in Crotone (the only port where we did not book an optional excursion) was just OK. My favorite excursions were the olive grove in Bari, and Pompeii in Naples. The one place where they FAILED MISERABLY is the specialty restaurant reservations that are "guaranteed" with certain cabin levels. We attempted to book them online within 2 hours of when they opened (in August) but were told that all tables for 2 were already booked and we could not book a seat at a shared table online - that would have to be done onboard. While frustrating, we were assured we could book any time once onboard. When we arrived at the ship the first day we were ushered to lunch upon arrival. When we finished lunch we went to the cabin and immediately called for our shared table reservations. The line just rang and rang for several attempts. We went to guest services and they said that you could only make dinner reservations during breakfast and lunch hours (which were now over for the day). The experience of trying to reach someone by phone and just hearing it ring was very frustrating and could have easily been avoided by adding a message stating the hours that reservations are accepted and not making me walk to guest services to find that out. The next morning we had an early excursion and didn't get to attempt to book our two "guaranteed" reservations until early afternoon on the first day of the cruise. At that time we were told that all reservations in the specialty restaurants were already taken and we would be put on the waitlist. I explained that we had booked a better cabin on the ship so that we would be guaranteed reservations in Manfredi's and the Chef's Table and they just said sorry - they are already all booked. We were put on the waitlist and on the last night were finally given a time slot at the Chef's Table restaurant. It was very good and I would have loved to try Manfredi's as well. Maybe next time. We have done 3 Viking Cruises now, 2 river and 1 ocean. All three have been truly an experience to remember and all good. The ship was brand new which made it even better. The crew was very eager to make a good impression (which they did). All of the cabins have an ocean view with a veranda which make for excellent sightseeing as you enter and leave port. Not much else as most of the cruising is done at night away from shore. The cabins are roomy enough as little time is spent there since there are plenty of activities to participate in or entertainment to view. The service as always is impeccable and it always seems the staff is there just for you but they take care of everyone the same. Sitting in the Explorers Lounge on the bow or the Aquavit Terrace on the stern really allows an individual to relax and get to know your fellow cruisers or just sit and contemplate where you are and enjoy the view. This is not a family type cruise meant for young children and there is no casino or climbing wall or zip lines. It's for those that want to learn and think about their place in the world. Shore excursion are plentiful and there is at least one included in the fare each day with other optional one available. Sometimes it's hard to chose but you can;t do it all in one voyage. We are already signed up for another River Cruise in France for my 65th. Can't wait. Read Less

This was our first Viking cruise. We had been on others with other cruise lines but Viking really knows how to create a relaxing vacation. They coordinated tours and activities very efficiently. Everything they put together on and off the boat was perfect. The atmosphere on the ship was very quiet and calm. Maybe that''s because no kids were on board and there was no casino. Whatever the reason, we loved it! We spend extra time at both ends of the cruise to allow us to explore the cities. When we arrived at checkin, there were no long lines and we were ushered to the ramp to get on the ship. We were greeted with champaign which was much appreciated after a hectic morning getting checked out of our hotel (which we booked) and getting some shopping in. Our room wouldn't be ready for a while so we got a bite to eat and relaxed by the pool while listening to the live band. It set the tone for a great trip. I'm looking forward to our next Viking cruise! Read Less

This was our second ocean cruise and we liked the first Viking Cruise Ship (Viking Sky) starting on Feb. 25, 2017 so much that we booked this second trip on the Viking Ocean Cruise line on the sister ship the Viking Sun starting on October 4, 2017. It was so nice that we have already booked a third cruise with Viking. We also had marvelous extensions on both ends of the cruise first in Florence and then in Athens. While we had been to Florence, Venice, and Athens once before (over 20 years ago) this gave us a chance to see some new things and revisit a few fantastic places too. The pre-extension was essentially all inclusive with wonderful food and locales for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and great included tours of Florence, Sienna, and San Gimignano. It was a small group and we received personal attention but also had enough free time at each site. We stayed at a wonderful villa in the Tuscan countryside near Florence. We then had a good and quick bus ride to Venice where we boarded the Viking Sun and found it even more inclusive, luxurious, and wonderful. We had included and few extra special tours of Venice, Split, Dubrovnik, Kotor, Corfu, and Olympia. The food on the ship was fantastic. There were great and uncrowded hot tubs, pools, and infinity pool. There was some nice entertainment and great bars throughout the ship. The food was very nice with two great specialty restaurants (included), a formal restaurant, and a buffet restaurant for breakfast and lunch. Obviously we put on weight even with the walking tours! Finally we had a fantastic extension in Athens with a tour of the acropolis and museum and then tours of the Pelopenese and Delphi. Great included lunches and time on our own for great dinners in Athens. Viking handled the transfers very well and smoothly picked us up at the Florence airport and dropped us off at thee Athens airport. Somehow both of our Viking Ocean cruises have been the inaugural trip for each ship. Both went very smoothly. Read Less
