First time on an Ocean Cruise...we are In our 60's and did not want to be on a cruise the size of a city. Viking is the best way to start and or finish. Will only take Viking as it is the BEST!!! Future booking are inevitable. We want to sail the world with Viking!!! All of the excursions were so informative and thought/organized so well. On board entertainment nightly and the bar service was grand. All on board service was from breakfast/lunch/dinner was outstanding. I just can't say enough of the service, meals, onboard ship persons and utmost service from all. Spa, pools and on board amenities are a huge factor on why we booked along with only 940 guests on the ship. Food and dining was so fabulous with lobster, Peking duck, shrimp, steaks/filets, fresh vegetables and amazing deserts....so much variety that you can choose from. You will never be disappointed with a Viking Ocean Cruise. Book today....enjoy what life has to offer! You will love it!!! Read Less

We went on this cruise to join our friends who went on River cruises with us. We also wanted to see the beautiful Viking ship that is advertised on our TV programs. The ship is totally lovely. The food was excellent. The staff wonderful. We were happy with many of the excursions in the cities on the cruise. But some of the excursions were not planned well and were rushed. We spent more time on the bus to and from Florence than in the city itself. Also rainy fall weather disrupted a couple of our excursions. Perhaps the fall is not the right time for this trip. One disappointment is that the ship always moved from port to port at night while we slept. The only coastlines we saw from the ship were Barcelona, our first port and when we left Monaco, a truly beautiful view. We did not see the Italian Amalfi coast from the ship when sailing from Florence to Rome. So sad. Read Less

We wanted to try Viking. Their food was very good. But we both agreed that Oceania's food is better. The cabin was comfortable. We had great cabin attendants. Always there to help. The mini bar was always stocked, extra towels if needed. The mustard drill was fast and very good. The ship was clean and the most comfortable ship that we have ever been on after more than twenty some cruises. Not crowded at all. There was always a comfortable place to sit and relax. Check in was fast and very easy. The staff was right there to help with any question. It felt like a very safe ship as well. The free excursions were nice. We had been to these places before, but not the very same locations. The ship is really the perfect size for us. Although, I have to admit that we like the small ships too. Like Sea Dream. I would definitely take another cruise on Viking. We haven't yet been on a River Cruise and would also like to try one of those soon. Read Less

The ship is beautiful and the public area is plentiful and tastefully done. The spa area is excellent, I wish I have more time to explore the spa facility. The port Sete was not originally on the itinerary and it was not an interesting port for a stop. Shuttle service at Florence was not up to par. We were left at the bus stop for over an hour in the rain and we never received an apology for the mess up. The ride should have come every 30 minutes. On the positive note, the staff on board are excellent, not only did they carry out their duties perfectly, they are also very good in anticipating the guest's need and offer alternatives and help without being asked. The laundry facility is great, I just wish there's more of them, maybe one on each floor. We also had a mixed up in the reservation restaurant. We had to wait for a long time before we were taken care of. Read Less

We choose this cruise because of the routing, and this time of year for the lighter crowds of the off season and cooler weather. We were pleased with both the weather and lack of crowds. Also everything was decorated for Christmas which made it even more beautiful. Over all both the tours provided and the extra excursions we purchased were excellant. However, on the Night of Flamenco in Barcelona, I felt the venue was a little too commercial. The dancing itself was excellant, but the tapas and sangria were mediocre at best. Except for the ham, cheese and olives, the rest of the tapas were not good, the sangria was not authentic and the creme brulee was burnt. Also, because we booked a morning tour for the Monseratt Abby, we could not also do the included tour of Barcelona, they overlapped by 15 minutes. It seems like they could have scheduled that better. Our pre and post extensions in Madrid and Rome were very nice. In Madrid there was an included 1/2 day tour of the city, excellent tour guide. In Rome however there was no included tour, I found this to be inconsistant. The food on the ship was excellent, fresh, delicious available. The Restaurant, their main dinning room, was order off the changing menu, and freshly prepared with service equal to any fine dining establishment. The World Cafe, the morning noon and night buffet was fresh, and delicious, with some prepared to order foods also. All of the other restaurants etc. were additionally as good, although, the lasagne in Manfredi's left something to be desired. Our Silver beverage package was worth every penny, (not expensive) it was basically an open bar the whole time on the ship. We are not heavy drinkers, but it was nice to have a cocktail or two before dinner or after an excursion. I loved that they charged us a flat fee daily, (15.00) for tips for everyone, without having to dig out cash everytime you turned around. The staff on the Ship were courteous, efficient, and friendly. The embarking and disembarking were efficient and easy. Never waiting, very organized. Over all a truly wonderful experience. Oh, and don't forget to try the Princess cake at Mumson's Read Less

The itinerary, length of trip, expense, and outstanding reviews led us to this booking. The food was delicious, and the wait staff was well trained. The spa afforded a lovely break at the end of the day. The clientele were generally older which made for quieter cruising. The full English tea daily was magnificent and a great time to meet new people.i my husband and I enjoyed all the amenities onboard and were delighted to find that there were no hidden expenses. Al-in-all this was an excellent value for the quality of service provided. We have already booked another trip and chose to try a river cruise after talking with seasoned Viking travelers. We will be taking a trip down the Rhine and Mosel rivers which will bring back many memories of our early married life when my husband was stationed with the USAF in Germany more than 40 years ago. My wife and I chose this cruise because it includes a tremendous opportunity to see a lot of Art Galleries and Museums as well as locations that are historically and socially significant. As has been our experience with all of our other Viking cruises, all facets of travel - from arrival to departure and everything in between - were handled beautifully by the Viking organization. The setting was elegant, and the people were incredible! Our cabin was roomy and well kept. The food was delicious and plentiful. Vikings chefs really know how to cook a variety of food styles and can please the most picky eaters. The specialty restaurants offer an elegant setting to try new dishes, and the staff in them are friendly and personable. The entertainment was fun - really enjoyed the classical music in the Living Room in the afternoons and evenings as well as in Wintergarden during tea time. We found the service to be second to none. The included excursions were fun and informative, and the optional excursions offered a wide variety of experiences you don't find on other lines. All things considered, we can't wait for our next trip on Viking! Read Less

This cruise covers a lot of places. Very interesting, and full excursions. We went from Madrid to Venice. With extensions on both. Madrid was a disappointment. The hotel was nice, but you had to pay for coffee after breakfast. This should be free in the lobby. The street beggars are constantly asking you to buy their wares. Even when seated in outdoor restaurants. Very annoying. I would pass on this part again, and do more days in Barcelona. From Madrid to Barcelona we took a train. Very well organized and enjoyable. Viking did a great job here. Barcelona was beautiful. We went to Marsaille France, did the included tour. Next was Monaco. Loved seeing the palace and where Grace Kelly was buried. Warning to anyone taking this tour, it's all uphill, and quite a long walk. Next we went to Italy-Luca and Pisa. It's a very long day, but well worth the tour. You get to see a lot. And the tour guide was very informative. These were paid for excursions, and an 8.5 hour day. Our next stop Rome. Went to Vatican City and Sistine Chapel. I have to say I was disappointed, only in that it was chaos. Multiple tours, hundreds of thousands of people all going to the same place. It was beautiful, and glad I went, but be prepared for the crowds. You can not take photos in the Sistine Chapel. This was a paid for tour and a 10 hour day. Afterward we went through Rome, past the coleseum but it would have been nice to have a short stop for pictures. This excursion did include lunch at an Italian restaurant. It was very good, and offered homemade limoncello. Onto Sorrento and Pompeii. These were also paid excursions, and another long day. Sorrento is the home of limoncello (yum). Pompeii is an amazing city. Well worth the tour. It's a lot of rocky walking. Our guide was amazing, and humorous. Corfu Greece was next. Did the included tour. Much needed break from three days of long tours. Neat city, and nice tour. Dubrovnik, Croatia was also lovely, went on included tour. Can't say this tour was good. Left us to explore on our own. Town was having a huge celebration which had State dignitaries and thousands of people. Made sightseeing difficult. Our guide wasn't very good either. Split Croatia was a small walking tour, and then a paid for river boat ride. We loved the river boat ride. It stopped at a small restaurant to give us a local flare of wine and bread. Enjoyable. Guide was very good. This was also a paid tour. Last stop Venice. We were in the rain, so didn't get to see as much as we would have liked. The hotel is across the canal and you have to take a water taxi provided by Hilton. San Marco square was flooded, but still crowded. We went in the Doge Palace, it was huge, and cost $20 euro to go in. But worth it to get out of the rain. Viking dropped the ball on this part of the cruise. Leaving the ship was delayed. There was a lot of waiting. But retrieving luggage went smoothly. It all arrived at the hotel. Once at the hotel, rooms weren't ready, so you had to sit around. There wasn't enough seats for the number of guests. However, we kept checking on our room and got one early. The Viking desk in the lobby did not offer much helpful info. They have no tours except for the day from the ship. You are on your own. Leaving the hotel was very interesting. They retrieve your luggage at 9am outside your room. Take it to a ramp, you identify your pieces and then board a small water taxi with other guests and on o the airport, with your luggage. It's about 30 mins to the airport. The Viking rep there was very helpful. The airport was crazy. I suggest getting your boarding pass printed at hotel. There are two lines-boarding pass and no boarding pass. Even though I did ours electronically, the one for my husband was wrong, and it reproduced mine to him. So we had to get back in line to get him a paper one. Our cabin on the ship was 3053. DO NOT ACCEPT this cabin. It is right over the dance bar. EVERY NIGHT WE HEARD THE BAND FROM 10-12mid. Once we identified it, and complained, (Viking actually knows about this!) they couldn't move us, because the ship was full. Three days before leaving they offered us another room, but we declined because we were leaving soon. Food on the ship was amazing. But they have some buffet setup issues. Some of the offerings can't be reached, and others ran out numerous times. Wait staff wasn't always on top of things, and you would have to ask over and over for your drink. Though they were always there with beer and wine. Room was always cleaned well, and our steward Eddie was great. I would go again, but would definitely make sure my room was in a better location. We chose this Mediterranean cruise because it offered 11 ort stops counting Rome. Unfortunately we missed one, Marseille, due to stormy weather. We experienced amazingly good weather except for that one overnight. This new ship is totally awesome, and perfect in every way. Lots of comfortable area, indoors and out, to sit and relax. The cabin was perfectly laid out with plenty of closet space, a large bathroom with heated floor, large shower and lots of towels. Good lighting and a large vanity with excellent storage shelves and drawers. The bed was amazing with lovely, fresh linens. Had a great sleep every night. The sitting area was comfortable with two chairs, a coffee table and desk. The balcony had comfy furniture and was a good size. The food was excellent quality, delicious with a huge variety including a sushi bar. There were many excellent choices of seafood every day as well as meat and vegetables, and all cooked to perfection. Breakfast offered an egg station where you could order any type of eggs. Eggs Benedict was offered every day. We experienced tours that were inclusive and ones we purchased. Every tour was top notch with excellent guides. Two times we did experience poor buses with dirty windows and torn seats. This was the only negative on the whole vacation. Viking staff are the best...they are organized, polite, friendly and intuitive. They make every effort to get to know you and provide you with your every need. They are an amazing group of people and I cannot commend them enough. They are the best part if the cruise. We did the pre cruise stay in Rome which was lovely. The Grand Hotel Palace was situated perfectly, although thought it was rather expensive for the room type we had. Very basic room. No coffee maker and no coffee available in the lobby. Breakfast was poor. We were not given any suggestions when we inquired about excursions (from host) other than we could share a taxi with others. We did manage ok on our own with the hop on-off bus and did enjoy this part of our vacation. Just thought it was expensive for what we received when compared with other Viking pre and post stays purchased in the past. Read Less

We had been wanting to do a Mediterranean cruise and this Itinerary came available on short notice. (We don't like planning 18 months ahead to take a cruise) We have travelled before with Viking and knew the level of excellence to expect. The food choices were wonderful. Lots of seafood. Also several specialty eating places. We were in a port everyday which did not allow us to enjoy all the amenities on the ship. There were port excursions from free to several hundred dollars. Be sure to review all the excursion info and sign up before you get on the ship. The popular ones fill up fast. If the excursion you want is full, be sure to wait list it. There were so many choices it was hard to pick just one each day. Two days in Barcelona is not enough time to see all the major sites. In Malaga, Spain be sure to visit Nerja to see the "Balcony of Europe". Recommend extra days in Rome and Lisbon on each end of the cruise. So much to see in both cities. If you fly out of Lisbon allow yourself 3 hours to get through their airport system. As expected, Viking personnel provided excellent service. Everyone greeted you and no matter who you asked for assistance, they stopped what they were doing and helped you even if it was not in their area. Read Less

Everything about this cruise was top notch. The itinerary and ports of call were cities/areas that we wanted to visit. Beginning in Rome and ending in Lisbon was fabulous....what could be better! The shore excursions were well planned and all of our guides were very knowledgeable, friendly, articulate and engaging. Our ship, the Viking Sun, was beautiful and meticulously cleaned and maintained and our cabin was perfect in size and amenities. Dining options were plentiful and the food was delicious. We especially enjoyed Manfredi's! The Chef's Table, The Restaurant and the buffet in the World café was excellent as well. Service on board was superb.....from our cabin stewards to wait staff all were very personable and made our voyage very enjoyable. The Viking Classical Trio, resident pianist Grego and resident guitarist Laszlo presented beautiful music in the atrium. Port talks were very informative and gave us insights into our next port of call. We will definitely book another ocean cruise with Viking. Read Less

We chose this cruise because of Viking's excellent reputation for river cruising and hoped it carried over to the ocean. It did - everything about this brand new ship is beautiful. The artful design of every space is stunning. The amenities are all you can ask for and the service is warm, friendly and efficient. Mark the cruise director could not be more pleasant. The excursions have all been very informative and enjoyable. The included excursion in Crotone (the only port where we did not book an optional excursion) was just OK. My favorite excursions were the olive grove in Bari, and Pompeii in Naples. The one place where they FAILED MISERABLY is the specialty restaurant reservations that are "guaranteed" with certain cabin levels. We attempted to book them online within 2 hours of when they opened (in August) but were told that all tables for 2 were already booked and we could not book a seat at a shared table online - that would have to be done onboard. While frustrating, we were assured we could book any time once onboard. When we arrived at the ship the first day we were ushered to lunch upon arrival. When we finished lunch we went to the cabin and immediately called for our shared table reservations. The line just rang and rang for several attempts. We went to guest services and they said that you could only make dinner reservations during breakfast and lunch hours (which were now over for the day). The experience of trying to reach someone by phone and just hearing it ring was very frustrating and could have easily been avoided by adding a message stating the hours that reservations are accepted and not making me walk to guest services to find that out. The next morning we had an early excursion and didn't get to attempt to book our two "guaranteed" reservations until early afternoon on the first day of the cruise. At that time we were told that all reservations in the specialty restaurants were already taken and we would be put on the waitlist. I explained that we had booked a better cabin on the ship so that we would be guaranteed reservations in Manfredi's and the Chef's Table and they just said sorry - they are already all booked. We were put on the waitlist and on the last night were finally given a time slot at the Chef's Table restaurant. It was very good and I would have loved to try Manfredi's as well. Maybe next time. I took my daughter in law on this cruise with me. The ship was pristine, and the crew incredible. Our every need was addressed (not that we had many due to the amenities). The food was wonderful, and the entertainment opportunities were great. If we wanted to have a quiet night and just have a glass of wine, there was a place for that. If we wanted to listen to music there was many options in different areas of the ship. The shore excursion choices were many, depending on how much walking you wanted to do. The evening port talks were always educational. My daughter in law is an artist and enjoyed the art on the ship and the ambiance the ship provided. The whole experience with Viking is exactly how I expected, always the best. I can't praise Viking enough, and I am looking forward to my next cruise with them in November. Read Less

We have done 3 Viking Cruises now, 2 river and 1 ocean. All three have been truly an experience to remember and all good. The ship was brand new which made it even better. The crew was very eager to make a good impression (which they did). All of the cabins have an ocean view with a veranda which make for excellent sightseeing as you enter and leave port. Not much else as most of the cruising is done at night away from shore. The cabins are roomy enough as little time is spent there since there are plenty of activities to participate in or entertainment to view. The service as always is impeccable and it always seems the staff is there just for you but they take care of everyone the same. Sitting in the Explorers Lounge on the bow or the Aquavit Terrace on the stern really allows an individual to relax and get to know your fellow cruisers or just sit and contemplate where you are and enjoy the view. This is not a family type cruise meant for young children and there is no casino or climbing wall or zip lines. It's for those that want to learn and think about their place in the world. Shore excursion are plentiful and there is at least one included in the fare each day with other optional one available. Sometimes it's hard to chose but you can;t do it all in one voyage. We are already signed up for another River Cruise in France for my 65th. Can't wait. Read Less

We have sailed on Viking River Cruises so trying Viking Ocean made sense. Inaugural cruise, around the world, why not? We were very pleased with the entire experience, we met wonderful people, travelers and crew. Small ship meant that we didn’t overwhelm any one location. Sea days were great, so many activities so little time to fit them in. Shore excursions were a mixture of highlights bus tours and overnights off the ship giving everyone a choice of how they want to spend their time. On sea days cooking classes were offered, hands on with new foods and new tastes to try. Buffets, dinning room and specialty restaurants offered a wide variety of choices. Sushi, pizza and wonderful gelato we offered everyday. We were never wanting for food as snacks were available. Cruise director and staff kept things moving smoothly. Would we do it again, absolutely, and we are going to finish sailing around the world in August 18. Read Less

This was our first Viking cruise. We had been on others with other cruise lines but Viking really knows how to create a relaxing vacation. They coordinated tours and activities very efficiently. Everything they put together on and off the boat was perfect. The atmosphere on the ship was very quiet and calm. Maybe that''s because no kids were on board and there was no casino. Whatever the reason, we loved it! We spend extra time at both ends of the cruise to allow us to explore the cities. When we arrived at checkin, there were no long lines and we were ushered to the ramp to get on the ship. We were greeted with champaign which was much appreciated after a hectic morning getting checked out of our hotel (which we booked) and getting some shopping in. Our room wouldn't be ready for a while so we got a bite to eat and relaxed by the pool while listening to the live band. It set the tone for a great trip. This was our second ocean cruise and we liked the first Viking Cruise Ship (Viking Sky) starting on Feb. 25, 2017 so much that we booked this second trip on the Viking Ocean Cruise line on the sister ship the Viking Sun starting on October 4, 2017. It was so nice that we have already booked a third cruise with Viking. We also had marvelous extensions on both ends of the cruise first in Florence and then in Athens. While we had been to Florence, Venice, and Athens once before (over 20 years ago) this gave us a chance to see some new things and revisit a few fantastic places too. The pre-extension was essentially all inclusive with wonderful food and locales for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and great included tours of Florence, Sienna, and San Gimignano. It was a small group and we received personal attention but also had enough free time at each site. We stayed at a wonderful villa in the Tuscan countryside near Florence. We then had a good and quick bus ride to Venice where we boarded the Viking Sun and found it even more inclusive, luxurious, and wonderful. We had included and few extra special tours of Venice, Split, Dubrovnik, Kotor, Corfu, and Olympia. The food on the ship was fantastic. There were great and uncrowded hot tubs, pools, and infinity pool. There was some nice entertainment and great bars throughout the ship. The food was very nice with two great specialty restaurants (included), a formal restaurant, and a buffet restaurant for breakfast and lunch. Obviously we put on weight even with the walking tours! Finally we had a fantastic extension in Athens with a tour of the acropolis and museum and then tours of the Pelopenese and Delphi. Great included lunches and time on our own for great dinners in Athens. Viking handled the transfers very well and smoothly picked us up at the Florence airport and dropped us off at thee Athens airport. Somehow both of our Viking Ocean cruises have been the inaugural trip for each ship. Both went very smoothly. Read Less
