We chose this cruise because we loved the Riverboat cruise that we took back in 2017 and though we would try the ocean line. The food and service was amazing -- rooms were lovely -- and I enjoyed the free wi-fi The entertainment is geared to an older crowd - there wasn't enough entertainment and with a lot of wasted space on the ship -- I felt there should have been more to choose from. Spent most of my time watching TV in the room. One of the most popular ports was missed due to weather -- not the ships fault -- but we didn't get any extra time at any other port -- The included excursions were very boring and the timing left you with no time to do any other ones -- which was extremely disappointing - because the included excursions with the Riverboat cruise were amazing -- Finally we traveled with a group of people -- which 6 of us was escorted to the airport when it was time to leave -- but the last person traveling with us was told to leave an hour past us - then was just left to find her own way to the airport - having to take a train and a bus - not knowing where she was going and was extremely upset -- In closing - I will never travel with Viking Ocean line again - This was the most I have ever paid for a vacation and was left very underwhelmed Read Less

My sister recommend it. She had done a River Cruise and wanted try this one. She loved them both. The cruise included my three sisters and I. We felt so spoiled the whole time. The staff were always so sweet, courteous and efficient with good sense of humors and memorized our names wherever they would see us. The food and drink was amazing, so many delicious options. The entertainment was great. The band in the lounge were so talented and fun and the cover ABBA group were incredible. The ship was always so clean and spot less, our cabins were always kept up and clean and well stocked. We went on quite a few excursions, which were amazing and there were so many great options to choose from. This was a trip of a life time and I would do it again in a heartbeat, especially with my lovely fun beautiful sisters!! Thank you Viking Star!! Read Less

Our cruise started with a 2 day pre cruise hotel at the Hilton Venice which was excellent. We are regular cruisers with this being a first with Viking. We have sailed with P and O , Celebrity, Princess, Royal Caribbean and Fred Olsen. We have to say Viking excelled in everything and wouldn’t hesitate to go with them again if the itinerary was right. Yes they are initially more costly but this is offset with the included excursions which are varied and drinks included with lunch and Dinner. Also free use of the spa facilities excluding treatments. The food is the best we’ve had on any cruise and with the alternative restaurants at no charge this gives you great variety without paying a subsidy. We definitely liked the more intimate nature of the smaller ship compared to the newer mega ships which are getting too big for our liking. Ports of call excellent and overall a fabulous cruise. Weather/time of year to travel the Adriatic could not have been better. Viking staff on board as well as tour guides and Viking hotel staff especially Emma, in Athens truly professional, courteous, friendly and always helpful.....and do go the extra mile to please everyone! Tour guides were very informative at each visit. Our tour guide Eva in Athens was particularly exceptional. She was knowledgeable and extremely passionate about the prehistoric and historical events leading up to Greece of today Our 6th Viking experience but first on a ship. Different yes but service just as outstanding as onboard a river boat. We really appreciated the effort to keep everything as sanitized as possible with wash stations upon entering eateries and hand sanitizers throughout the ship. Dining options were exciting and enjoyable Manfredi's was a delight, the Restaurant our favorite and the Chef's table a pleasant experience too! We also enjoyed the seafood by the pool! Overall a great trip and we look forward to another. Thanks Viking. Read Less

Always wanted to do a Med cruise and when we saw the itinerary it hit all the spots on our bucket list. What was even better our Nephew and his wife live in Barcelona so we added a couple of nights on the front end to visit and explore the city. We also added nights on the end in Venice. Our cabin (PV1-PENTHOUSE VERANDA) was great and had some nice perks which we really took advantage of. Early shore excursion booking (we got every one we wanted) and early reservations to the specialty restaurants. Also an earlier boarding time which was great. Breakfast was in the main dining room and a buffet, but lots of cook to order choices. There was a specialty buffet every evening and they looked great, however we preferred the restaurants, not only was the food incredible but since we had purchased the Silver Spirts package so was the wine :-) Service was great and you really felt special wherever you were. We had shore excursions in every port and normally the more adventurist ones. The local guides were easy to understand and added great value. We enjoyed the sea day as a time to relax for the rest of the trip. They had a great house band and always ended the day in the cocktail lounge where the bartender always had my favorite drink ready as soon as he saw us walk in. The inhouse entertainment was top notch, great voices and well planned shows. Besides scheduled shows they would also show up in some of the lounges for singing and dancing. This was a trip that cleared a lot off our bucket list. Read Less

We had cruised with Viking River Cruises and wanted to have an equally memorable experience while visiting Greece, Montenegro, Croatia, and Slovenia. We are so glad we chose Viking for this cruise. Our room aboard the Viking Store was very comfortable and we had excellent WiFi coverage while onboard the ship. The various dining rooms and lounges were beautiful and the staff was very attentive to our wants and needs. We were very pleased with our guides in the various ports we visited and we loved the excursions that we had selected prior to the trip. We would advise others to take the tour of the excavation site of Akrotiri on the island of Santorini; it is amazing how far advanced that civilization from 4,000 years ago was! We also thoroughly enjoyed the music made by the waves hitting the sea wall at Zadar, as well as the tour which took us to Lake Bled where we viewed the Dolomite Mountains and the turquoise waters caused by the limestone. The onboard entertainment was excellent; we looked forward to the shows provided by talented, young musicians. We did not sign up for this cruise with family members or friends, but people on the excursions were very friendly and we learned a lot from the people we met. We liked the cruise so much that we have signed up for two more Viking Ocean cruises--one in the British Isles and another in the Western Mediterranean. Read Less

We enjoyed all our previous Viking river cruises and were eager to have a Viking ocean cruise experience. We opted for the pre-cruise extension in Rome and soaked up the art and history of the Eternal City. Our hotel was a five-star property on the Via Veneto directly across the street from the US embassy. A Viking representative was on hand to help with reservations, etc. Our cabin on Viking Star was spacious and comfortable--an upgrade from the river cabins. Our steward (Cedric) was helpful and courteous. By the third day he anticipated our needs and remembered our preferences. There are several dining venues aboard the Star, and the cuisine is excellent. The Silver Spirits package is a good value. We were impressed with the variety and quality of on-board entertainment. It ranged from pop to classical. Land excursions were offered daily--some were included and some at extra cost--and afforded the opportunity to see the countryside. We visited Florence and Pisa in Italy, Monaco, St. Tropez, Nice, Aix-en-Provence, and Barcelona. All land travel was aboard modern Mercedes coaches. The local guides were knowledgeable and friendly. An important feature of Viking ocean ships is the size of the vessels--there are only 900 guests compared to 3000+ on the mega ships. A better experience all around. In Summary, we were delighted with our Viking Star experience and are already discussing our next cruise. Read Less

We went on a Viking River Cruise last year and it was fabulous. We wanted to do the Mediterranean so we chose Viking again. Everything about the ship was fabulous. Food, accommodations, experience and entertainment. The only downfall were some of the included tours. They were nothing like the ones we experienced on the river cruise. VERY disappointed. I’m sure the ones you paid for were much better, but a lot of those were already sold out when we got a chance to book. I would definitely recommend Viking to everyone and hopefully we will use them in the future. We also enjoyed having many eating options on the ship. The buffet was always fresh and very appealing and the other sit down restaurants were very good as well. We certainly enjoyed the entertainment in the evenings, every night was something different so that made it very nice. Great experience Read Less

The ship was so well appointed and comfortable (like sitting in your own home). The same for the cabins which were so perfectly designed for maximum comfort. The dining experience is unique and kept interesting with geographically curated menus. The enrichment lectures were so good and the port talks were extremely helpful and definitely helped boost our confidence in navigating ports. Viking service is second to none. The service is so good and we were so well taken care of during our journey. Overall the Viking travel experience is one we plan to repeat over and over. So far we have traveled with Viking on two ocean cruises and one river cruise, but have another river cruise coming up in August 2019. It would be very hard for us to travel on another cruise line as it could never measure up to a Viking cruise. Viking consistently delivers that elegant comfort and we enjoy so much. Read Less

Always loved the history of the Mediterranean. The resident historians made it very complete. The excursions were wonderful, especially on Corfu. The people on board were all like minded. The staff could not have been more helpful. The cabin and the crew were excellent as well. The dining was top shelf. We are planning another river cruise and another ocean cruise. The only suggestion is that the ship ran out of top shelf single malt scotch on the second day. I am a big fan of single malt scotch and that is way I bought the silver spirits package. The lectures were wonderful and the entertainment was as well. We loved the variation in the dining and the waiters made it very fun. We very much appreciate no children, no casinos, and plenty of learning. I suggest that you made the content (TedTalks, history lectures) available when we get home. I would share that with friends who could be interested in future cruises. Read Less

Having a balcony room was wonderful. The service from all of the staff was beyond amazing. The free wine and beer with meals was a nice extra to have. We loved how they recognized ALL of the staff at the captains farewell reception--that was truly going above and beyond for employee recognition!!! Having local tour guides who knew the area and history at each stop was great and they all spoke very good English. We really enjoyed all the entrée options! The food was top shelf too, including crab, lobster, sushi, omelets, fresh baked desserts, local food from each country, etc. The embarkation protocol for each day was extremely well coordinated. The coach buses were very nice and comfortable. Read Less

We had done two river cruises with Viking and decided to try the Ocean Cruise and selected the Mediterranean cruise for it's wonderful ports of call. By every measure Viking Star met or greatly exceeded all of our expectations. Beautiful ship, excellent service, wonderful food, great entertainment, and wonderful tour options. We already had a great experience with Viking on the river cruises - we can now add Viking Ocean to our list of wonderful experiences. The public areas of the ship were so welcoming and conducive to meeting with friends for a drink before dinner. The dining options were wonderful - Manfredi's was by far our favorite! However not to slight the other options, they were just as good with lots of options, ability to accommodate our large group at times. The shows were good and the entertainment at Torshavn was awesome! if I had one thing to find issue with would be the night the entertainment was by the pool. it was very difficult to get seating to see the performers - not sure why this was held there but it was not the best option as far as we were concerned to perform a show. We loved the lunches where the food was prepared out on the Aquavit terrace - such a great option! All in all a fabulous experience. Read Less

We departed from Venice but stayed 2 days in advance there. The embarkation was seamless and our cabin very nice. Loved the private balcony. We went on one Princess Cruise many years ago & decide we did not like cruising... Viking changed our minds and we have a 2 week cruise booked for January 2020 which we can't wait for. I would definitely sign up for the silver drink package if you enjoy cocktail hour! Creative and fun drinks! The shore excursions were great and we really got the feel for the country. Everyone on the ship & excursions were very kind, informative and helpful. We felt like part of the Viking family and go to know many of them well. We would certainly recommend Viking to anyone! I love history and this cruise had plenty of that. We got to visit many walled cities in countries we had never visited before. We really loved Croatia and my wife especially enjoyed the Greek Islands we went to. As far as the ship itself, the food was both great and diverse and the crew was very friendly. There were numerous restaurants and we enjoyed all of them. For those that have an occasional drink, the bars contained a wide selection of liquor and the staff knew what they were doing. The only disappointment was the weather (3 ports of call were skipped). But this is not the fault of Viking. We also really enjoyed the port talks done prior to each visit. They really helped in preparing for each city and determining what to focus on. They also gave a great overview of the history in the area. We can’t wait for our next cruise! Read Less

I chose this cruise to see the Mediterranean and explore cities. The weather was terrible. It snowed or rained almost everyday. The Barcelona tour was terrible. Couldn't understand the tour guide. Asked tour guide if we were going to sagra da familia and she replied yes we will see gothic church. In fact we were taken to a gothic church but it wasn't sagar da familia. Multiple people on the bus were disappointed. Pisa was nice but you have to walk at least a mile from the bus through town to the tourist site. On the walk back an older woman fell and hit her head and artificial hip. No ambulance was called. She had to keep walking. Others opted to take a taxi ride back to the bus for 10 euros. Another day I did the optional excursion to Florence. Again another long walk from bus to town. Again another older woman fell down on the walk back to the bus hurting her ankle. No ambulance called she had to keep walking assisted by strangers. The food was mediocre. The entertainment was nothing special. Wait times in the restaurant are unbearably long. Due to rough weather our day in st. Tropez was cancelled. We spent the day cruising. No extra activities on board to pass the time. Unless you are a "drinker" you will have at best an ok time. And I didn't pay over $3000 expecting to have an ok time. I have previously taken a river cruise--it was much better. But after this I have been put off from viking and travelling for a while. Also don't get me started on the flights they schedule for you. Layovers and bad times. They are not concerned with helping you unless you pay more money. Everything is a money grab. Getting home from Rome took over 24 hours. I could of had a direct flight in 10 hours. Read Less

This was actually a heel and toe cruise. We did the Iconic Med from Rome to Barcelona for Xmas and from Barcelona to Rome for New Years. It was a wonderful experience. Viking is the best. The service was great, the booze plentiful, and the food excellent. Viking should have bundled these two cruises as a option from the start. It was a little trick getting the same cabin for both legs since there was no way we wanted to change the cabin. The little classical music trio was marvelous. The future cruise director was great to work with. We booked two river cruise and another ocean while on board (in addition to the LA to Miami Xmas and New Year cruise we already had booked). One excursion we went on was identical to a Rhone river excursion we did a couple of years ago. It would have be nice if Viking had cross-referenced that excursion to warn Vikingphiles like ourselves. :-) Read Less

We picked this cruise because we liked the ports we would see. The weather with really blue skies added to our enjoyment. We were apprehensive to go in December --- but Viking said 50's° and it was true. VIKING keeps their word and its even better then advertised. The cabins and public areas were spotless. The television had a ton of good movies --- which we took advantage of when due to wind we couldn't go to one port. The activities and entertainment was very enjoyable whether we were waiting for dinner or going to a show after dinner. Restaurants were very good especially the Italian and "The Restuarant" we ate at most nights. We also enjoyed the Buffet Rest. --- especially the excellent service from the staff. First time on a Viking Ocean cruise (not been on their River cruises either...yet), 17th cruise overall. In my opinion, Viking is several notches better than the larger cruise lines we've been on...Norwegian, Princess & Carnival. Nothing against any of those guys as I've enjoyed almost every cruise thus far, but the other lines make it feel like they have their hands in your wallet from the second you step on the boat. Viking serves a different clientele and charges you a little more up front in exchange for simply trying to help you enjoy your cruise. I loved it and am eagerly looking forward to trying out the River cruises next. Fantastic service, extremely well appointed cabins, free (or inexpensive) shore excursions and more free wine and soft drinks than I could drink. Embarkation was quick and easy and the disembarkation was so fast that we ended up having to wait for our private transportation to arrive because we budgeted way too much time to exit the boat. Fastest disembarkation we've ever had. We walked right off the boat with no wait whatsoever. Unbelievable. I just don't want to say a whole lot more because the higher the demand for Viking, the more they're going to want to charge. If you try Viking; you'll probably love them. Just don't. Please. This is was our second Viking Ocean Star sailing. 1st one was May-June 2015 Viking Homelands. We loved it then and we loved the 2nd sailing just as much. Previous to the Viking Ocean Cruises we sailed on three Viking River Cruises. Danube, Rhine and Yangtze. Mediterranean Odyssey - October 2017 cruise only. We flew in 2days early with friends we met on Viking Ocean Star in 2015 and made our own arrangements in Barcelona, exploring many of the exiting city sites - La Sagrada Familia; Guell Park and strolled Las Ramblas from our Hotel on the same street. A third couple met up with us on board ship two days later. We extended our stay in Venice by 2days with hotel stay 3min. from Saint Marks Square which also offered complimentary water-taxi to Murano. Embarkation and disembarkation went without any delays; both in Barcelona and Venice. Our cabin-mid ship, Deluxe Veranda, which we saw briefly on a daily basis was very comfortable. Being avid dancers we enjoyed the sounds of Oaseas in the Torshav Lounge with Christina, Speedy and band. Polka was not in their repertoire but their keyboard player came up with the Beer Barrel Polka and the following night they played several Polkas - they were great. Other shows included a tribute to ABBA; The Long & Winding Road dedicated to the Beatles; Songscape: An Operatic Fantasy and more. You'll find unlimited activities on board ship throughout the day and evening. Enjoy the sounds of the Viking classical Trio, resident Guitarist or resident Pianist in the expansive and beautiful public Atrium. Relax in the Living Room, enjoy a drink with friends in the Explorer's Lounge, Aquavit Bar or Pool bar. Stay fit by using the well equipped fitness center; choice of three pools; Nordic Spa; Shuffle Board etc. Dining at its best - the choice is yours Manfredi's, Italian cuisine; The Chef's Table; The Restaurant, fine dining and the World Café, cafeteria style. Snacks and Lunch is also served at the Pool Grill and Mamsen's. Service throughout is exceptional. You'll find the Staff attentive, helpful, determent to please with a smile. If there is problem or certain need, they will aim to fix it resolve it quickly. Our schedule in regards to shore excursions was extremely busy...by our own choosing, which made it difficult to attend several of the on board activities we would have liked to attend as well. We had excellent, knowledgeable guides on all excursions we took - they ranged anywhere from 1 1/2 to 10 1/2 hours. Best way to truly enjoy your shore excursions is read up on the area in advance so you can make the most of the time in each area. Be prepared for steps and more steps. Anticipate crowds. Dress comfortably. We had a very mindful guide who did avoid certain areas in Barcelona at the time Catalonians were demonstrating in the city center. The weather was a fantastic....daily Sunshine, Blue Sky, Calm waters and daytime temperatures in the mid 70F. Our "three couple party" enjoyed a most memorable Dinner arranged at the Chef's Table by Tom Aberg, Hotel General Mgr., Martin Kitzing Executive Chef, Emir Tursik, Restaurant Supervisor- our attentive server at our celebratory Dinner; and Zrinka Kardum, Restaurant Manager. We each celebrated 55years of wedded bliss....making it a total of "165 years of Marriage!" Will we sail on another Viking Ocean Cruise? I'm quite sure we will .....already glancing through the catalogue. Read Less

Ship is GORGEOUS! We were in Explorer Suite 5000 at the very bow of the ship and it was perfect. A small bit of trouble with the AC in the living room, but that is the only complaint. The gentlemen taking care of us were great. Free laundry and pressing a super feature. The staff service was wonderful and very personal, especially the Guest Services manager. Food in the specialty restaurants was wonderful and we were able to go there whenever we wished; main restaurant was about normal for a good ship....nothing special. Included wine in every restaurant was quite good. Guest lecturers were excellent and added much to the port stops. Entertainment was surprisingly good for a ship this size. Decor everywhere was extremely tasteful with subtle touches everywhere....nothing gaudy. Had to cancel one port because of weather, but you always take that chance when cruising. Included excursions were average at best, but the fairly expensive optional excursions were great. I needed a small mobility scooter for excursions and they were most helpful to me. Going one day to Omaha Beach in Normandy in pouring rain, wind and cold (just like it was on D Day), to Giverny and Monet's gardens the next day in the sun was an unbelievable contrast .... one I'll never forget. We have cruised mostly Oceania, Regent and Silversea until now, liking Oceania the best. I can honestly say that Viking Ocean is right up there with Oceania, though quite different. They do need to get the shore staff up to par. They made tons of mistakes ....everyone agreed. But once on board all was great. Embarkation and disembarkation were a breeze. They even let us keep all our luggage with us, then sent someone to get it and us at 9:00 and straight to a cab they had arranged. The whole experience is VERY Scandinavian.
