OK this site wants me to type more so here it goes. My lovely wife of 32 years were considering the world cruise and she said Whoa! Our first experience on an ocean cruise was a tiny ship in Alaska I think it held 60 people. That was an amazing experience and our son was 10 then. Our second was Carnival Cruise the Mexican riviera and it was horrible even with the suite we hated every moment from embarkation to debarkation. We did that cruise for our teenage son to socialize all he did was read LOL. We have done 4 AMAWaterways trips and loved them but those were river cruises. So When it was announced Viking was doing a world cruise the same day I booked ES1 cabin 4000 put a deposit down and happily called my life partner and she said WHAT ARE YOU CRAZY! She pointed out the horrible Carnival Cruise experience and said what the ^%$& are you thinking. I promptly called the best travel agent and she was yea its a long trip but its the best ocean cruise not a Carnival cruise at all. She suggested a 14 day and I went for the 21 and suite 4000. With that said here we go. First the transfer to the hotel (four nite pre cruise) was flawless and tours amazing in a wonderful hotel. Our guide was awesome picture My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Embarkation was smooth as silk. The room; well lets just say like home. Our steward Mohamed and his team made us feel like we were at home and we wanted for nothing. Never waited in a line and never for want of a pool chair or towel or a drink. Our mornings were greeted by Gregory the Viking bartender, he also woks in the Restaurant, Alway a pleasant smile and makes the best coffee on the ship in fact the best I ever had. He always put Mr Dan and Mrs Lisa on the lids with smiley faces. The food was incredible Ellard and Glen always made us feel like we were the only ones in the restaurants. The Kitchen table experience was our favorite shopping with the Chefs in Monaco was Perfect. All tours were amazing and frankly to many to thank we cant think of much to change. What we did not like: The internet is horrible I can fly at 40,000 feet at 680 MPH and get better internet. The TV channels are lacking but movie selection was great. And on departure they had a lousy exchange rate to pay your bill in EUROS and a 3% fee. Were in Europe for gods sake be fair and convenient. Kind of a sucker punch at the end of the cruise. I just put it on my card and got a way better exchange rate and no fees from bank of america. We booked two more ocean voyages with Viking and were looking at that world cruise! :) Read Less

We had done a River Cruise with Viking on the Rhine River Basel to Amsterdam. Vikings level of service was outstanding. Last Year we did our first Ocean with Viking on the Sun British Isles Explorer London to Norway 16 Days. It again was outstanding! Fantastic Itinerary. For this Summer we chose Viking Star on the 12 Night Mediterranean Odyssey. I can't say enough great things about the ship and crew as a whole. Everyone works extremely hard and pleases each and every guest. From our cabin (Deluxe Veranda) 3066, was always immaculately kept, House Keeping, Room Service, Maintenance when I locked our safe incorrectly. Wine Service all top Notch! The shore excursions were fantastic, especially the ones we chose. Unfortunately when we signed up for excursions, 2 were Sold Out, The Helicopter tour over Monaco and the French Riviera and the Gondola tour in Venice. However when we were on board Alonya working at the front desk who had sailed with us on Sun British Isles Trip was unbelievably helpful and got us waitlisted and cleared for both. Amazing Service and Amazing tours. Another familiar face was Hector the Wine Sommelier! He is fabulous and was so accommodating with our wine selections along with Ramon the wine steward. They both made a point to come to our table at dinner every night with recommendations. The Dining options are wonderful, the food amazing and the service again Top Notch, We never waited for anything whether a cocktail poolside, water service on the Aquavit Terrace or in any restaurant. Embarkation and Disembarkation super smooth. Our luggage did not make our connection as we were delayed out of Boston but the crew got it to our cabin before we even arrived. The only slight thing I would mention is that a few of our Ports of Call were not that pretty for the cruise Terminal. Would prefer to Moore off the coast and tender in but I understand all of the logistics in moving all the guests, buses etc. Monaco was Amazing. We just booked New Zealand, Australia and the Great Barrier Reef with Viking for 2020! :) Will never choose any other company than Viking. They do everything extremely Right :) Read Less

This was our first crucial and we did a lot of research before we picked it. We even went to the cruise show at the NEC. We wanted a small boat that was very informal and that is what we got. We loved it. We would go back and would certainly recommend Viking. The ship is very understated. The decor is Scandinavia chic. The cabins are small but have everything you need. What is a bonus is the verandah where you can sit and admire the sunsets. Everywhere is spotless. However there is always somewhere to sit and read quietly. The pool are does get busy and we found it can be harder there to find a place to sit than say in the Explorers lounge. The staff are amazing. Someone somewhere is always working with a smile, saying hello and can I help you? Food- we tried all the restaurants. There is plenty of food and the quality is good, service can be a bit slow depending on who is serving you. Chefs table- worth going once, set 5 course menu with different wines at each course. Food a bit too rich for us. Manfreidis - again worth going to, more choice but very loud and busy. Restaurant- more formal but fine didning, excellent food. Worlds cafe - ate there mostly as it is very informal no need to dress up. Fantastic buffet you could just have a bowl of soup or a 3 course meal. Afternoon tea was delicious Explorers lounge - lunch and cakes in the afternoon. Good quality Pool grill mainly beef burgers but again good quality for lunch You can have drinks with your meals some didn’t bother having the drinks package. Trips- we only paid for Florence which is definitely worth the money. Stunning. Pisa - seeing the leaning tower was good fun Monaco- loved it and you can get around so easily you don’t need the tour St tropez- don’t bother with the tour waste of time. Not much to see and you can do that on your own Marseilles- again loved it so much to see but I wouldn’t bother with the tour as a shuttle bus is run from the ship and it is so easy to do your own thing. Barcelona again I would do my own thing as the tour is mainly a coach trip and 30mins in the city. Fellow passengers aged from 20-80 but 95% are American. Criticism - the flights having to change at Amsterdam when we are only flying from England to Rome and from Barcelona. It took us 14 hours to get home door. It was quicker to get to the states. Our adult children chose this cruise from a few available choices of cruise lines. It was also my first choice. The four of us enjoyed the ship and the excursions as well the entertainment on board. We got to play games such as golf and bocci and had lots of fun. We also got to know each other again as our last vacation together was in 1995. The rooms were very spacious and clean. The staff were always pleasant and accomodating. The housekeeping staff were always so friendly and always remembered our names. We also liked the fact that there are no formal nights and that the restaurants sitting were not assigned so we could go anytime we wanted therefore we got to meet a lot more people. We also loved the fact the ship doesn’t play loud music and it’s not crowded. No problem getting on and off the ship however disembarkation was not so smooth. We arrived in Venice a day early giving us more time to explore on our own before boarding the ship. Read Less

This was our second Viking Star cruise, first the Inagural year Venice to Istanbul. We arrived in Athens three days early an toured on our own. Once we boarded the Star, we felt we had arrived home. The most welcoming part was several of the bartenders remembered us from two years prior. When you are addressed as Mr. Lang and welcome back, that was it, this was going to be a great trip. Tours— Highly recommend Mykonos by 4X4 vechicle trip, Nazareth & Sea of Galilee Shore Excursion, and last and most memorable From Naples The Vistas & Villages of the Amalfi Coast Shore Excursion. The last one stops in Sorento shipping and Delightful 3 Star restaurant lunch. The road trip along the coast were as advertised most scenic, I finally got the Amalfi Coast off my bucket list after 3 prior visits. Food— My favorite Restaurant is Manfredi’s, memorable fine dining, Chef’s Table was disappointing both trips, the Restaurant is better. My breakfast and late night treat was Mamsen’s in the Explorer Lounge on Deck 7. Interesting note the Executive Chef David McDonald is the only cruise chef I have ever seen throughout the ship we’re food is served- “inspecting the troops”, so to speak, everyday. He has the time to talk to guests- a mark of a true professional. Future bookings and discounts were not available on this cruise because of the official reservations agents departure, a letter was given to some Explorer Members to use this code. I missed the window due to health issues, but will try now on an Amazon Cruise in December 2019. The staff in all corners of the ship were very professional, I believe this is due in part to the original crew who set and maintain a high standard for all new members. All in all Viking out got it right, I hope this experience is transferred the new Ocean ships coming on line. Last — This is not a family cruise for younger folks, I believe as it was modeled this way. Read Less

We chose Viking Ocean because of a positive experience on a Viking Long Ship in 2015. We were not disappointed. The cruise was comfortable, relaxing and informative. There were no fancy nights so one could just relax full time. The food was great and decent wine flowed freely. The included tours were quite good and the few extra tours we took were fairly priced. I loved the spa which included hot whirl pools, steam, sauna and snow room. Everything was very invigorating and Viking supplied everything you needed. The ship is very stylish and has good lecturers. The price for a Viking Cruise is not cheap but the deliver all they promise. I'll go back on another Viking Ocean Cruise readily. My wife had a walker and Viking was very accommodating. In addition the staff was very helpful to her. Indeed the Hotel Director went out of his way to help her on several occasions. Read Less

First we went to Iceland for the precruise holiday and Viking did an outstanding job. Arrived in Bergen, Norway, and we were bussed to the port. Very easy embarkation, and our room was ready when we arrived. Bags arrived shortly thereafter while we were having a drink on the explorer's lounge. We purchased the silver spirits beverage package which for us was a great deal. My husband had his Italian liquors every night along with his brandy, pool drinks and wines. My husband tried every drink on the pool menu, lol. The bar staff was terrific, from the girls on the pool or at night in the atrium. As for the meals, we never had a bad meal at any restaurant and service was great every night. Definitely recommend the cheif's table with wine pairings, very unique menu, went here four times. Manfredi's has great risotto, pasta, ossobuco, and their zabaglione with berries is just as good as what I make at home. And the rib eye steak is like butter. The restaurant prepares the lobster dinner, and it was done to perfection. I had escargots and they were delicious. We also ate at the world cafe on a number of nights also. I had the the New York strip which was good but at one port, they had fresh catch salmon which they cooked on the outside patio and that was the best. But the next day, they made a fish soup which was equally as good. Great breakfast here, never tried the restaurant for breakfast because we had early morning tours. Mansen's waffles were delicious but we shared it because it was so filling. Oh yes, don't forget the gelato bar, delicious. Also, room service was excellent and the food was hot. Never did try the afternoon tea as we were stuffed from eating at the pool grill. Entertainment was great, there was always something going on. The entertainment director was Suzanne and her assistant was Jaime. Both were terrific. In the atrium, they had santo playing guitar, Eve playing piano and the had a group that played violin, and other instruments. Each sessions was different and the music was barely repeated. Now the night time shows we're exciting, a quirky musical adaptation of get smart, very funny. The rat pack show was excellent but get your tickets early. Abba was great if you're a fan of momma Mia. Then they tried a new show with broadway shows, I think that this was my favorite. Then they had discussions, all day, my husband loved these sessions, especially the smaller ones. Loved our cabin, suitcases went under the bed and we found that between the draws and shelfs in the closets, we had plenty of space. Loved the warm bathroom floors, the outside veranda was great but because it was chilly outside, we didn't use it that often. Check your vox boxes because the previous guests had not left the ear phones. The refrigerator was small and the bar person exchanged the tonic water for club soda. Our steward Rio was great and offered us great advice at different stages. The spa was great, just know that their hot tubs are not that hot but I found they were confortable. The main pool was deep so be aware of this. We didn't try the infinity pool but expect to try it on our next cruise in February. We originally chose optional tours but three were cancelled due to lack of interest. So we chose included on those days. Honestly, every tour was great except for rudeness among some of the cruisers. If you're in a foreign country, don't make fun of the tour guides when they speak English, it's not their first language and oh yes, the bus drivers are not deaf and they also understand English. Also aquavit is nit sold on the ship but in Tomso, we found a liquor store at a local mall close to the pier, prices were excellent and staff were very helpful. Word of advice, everything is expensive, but handmade items are worth purchasing. Finally purchased my Norwegian sweater and I purchased it at a fair price. Had a great time in the Orkney islands, Shetland islands and Scotland. Just a world in advance as to souvenirs, if breakable then let security know before you put it through the scanners, unfortunately, a piece of painted glass art didn't stop when it went though the scanner and ended up breaking. Security felt terrible when we saw it fall and break but what are you going to do, accidents happen. If you follow instructions at each port, then getting off for tours is very easy. People with handicaps take elevator to get down to tenders or to ramp when your group is called. Look into getting a folding all terrain walker for the tours, made it more enjoyable when I participated in tours and staff on busses were very accommodating. Read Less

Wanted to see the many ports and was able to see the best of each city. Food, service, entertainment were all five star. loved that no one was always taking my picture and trying to sell it back to me. loved no one pushing drinks on me every 5 minutes and free water, what more could you ask for>? Not a mass of people on board and no kids.without 5000 passengers it was easy on and off with easy to get on and off at the ports. all rooms had a balcony. Compliment drinks were nice at meal time. in comparing viking to other cruise lines viking was far superior to all. THE FOOD WAS FIVE STAR AND I WAS ABLE TO TRY SOME EXOTIC FOODS I Normally wouldn't try. if i did not like it, it was still five star and maybe not something for my pallet, squid etc. and no charge for specialty dining. My best advise is book your trips and specialty dining early. VIVA LA VIKING Read Less

We have travelled with Viking Ocean Cruises before and have always been impressed by the dedicated crew, the conveniences offered by the cruise line (24 hour room service, in-room mini-bar, all other included bonuses), and the excellent excursions. The guides are extremely knowledgeable and give us terrific insight into the area we are learning about. Also, the onboard lectures add to our enjoyment of the cruise. Our cabin, like all others has a veranda for relaxing, and viewing arrivals and departures from the comfort of our cabin. This was our third ocean cruise with our fourth coming up soon. We have been spoiled by Viking Ocean Cruises and cannot see the need to test other cruise lines. We appreciate the smaller size of the ship since embarkation and debarkation at the various ports is quick and very secure. We have witnessed the lineups waiting to board the giant cruise ships and don't want to waste our vacation time in huge lineups! Read Less

My wife's family is from the West Indies and we wanted to see some of the islands on which her ancestors lived. This cruise was over the top wonderful in every respect. The shore excursions gave us a real sense on what things would have been like living on some of the islands. Since we have been on Viking cruises before, we expected the food to be wonderful, and it was. Most of the passengers were retired couples which was perfect for us. We made friends with lots of people. We were afraid that the public areas would be crowded and that boarding and leaving the ship would be congested, but everything was perfect. The ship was fully booked, but we never felt crowded. We frequently asked ourselves: where is everyone? Excellent planning by the crew all of whom were amazingly friendly. Here is the final proof of what we thought of the cruise: within a week of getting home we signed up to go again next year--very same cruise, very same cabin. Read Less

My wife and I wanted to visit the Caribbean islands on a smaller cruise ship. We found that Viking had the best prices, and the places we wanted to visit. It was the PERFECT choice. We sailed on the Viking Star which is just 1 1/2 years old, very new, clean, but still big enough to get lost. The staff was always friendly and happy. Did I say friendly? Every staff member welcomed us, and said HI every time we passed by them. We enjoyed all the food on board. And their 'house' wines and beer were always available, and NO cost. It was great beer, but so-so wines. Before we reached each of the 10 islands the cruise director gave a 30 minute orientation of that day's destination island. It was great to learn about the local sights, and a description of each of the 'included' and other tours. We thoroughly enjoyed our daily no-cost 'included' tour which was typically a 2-4 hour bus tour of each island, to include many stops and sights. Always included a rum-punch at several stops. They made stops for additional photos when requested. Some time the tour-guide on the bus was not clear because of their accent, or sometimes just rambling via the PA system on the bus. Upon returning the ship, we were many times greeted by the staff on the dockside with songs and champagne for each of us. We always felt like we were kings and queens. They have 2 pools which I did not have time to swim, but we did attend several entertainment venues with great shows. One evening we watched a Beatles review, another evening was an Abba review. Another night was a 50s song-fest poolside. We fell in love with our cruise director Suzanne Gayle. What a fabulous lady she is, always available before, after all events, and greeting us each time we boarded or left the ship. She also did all shipboard announcements for the entertainment shows, the Port reviews, and sang. We felt like family members, both with Suzanne, and all the other onboard staff. We also heard how fabulous the river-cruises are, so we are next planning another cruise, this time a river-cruise on another Viking ship. Oh yes, don't worry about sea-sickness! There is almost no feelings of rocking or rolling in the sea. The ship is VERY VERY steady, and we sleep very well at night. I was eager each morning to exit my room to view and photograph our next island, and I was never disappointed. I give 100-stars to both Suzanne, and to Viking Ocean Cruises. Read Less

We had a wonderful time on The Viking Star. The restaurants served a nice variety of foods and the wait staff was always available and friendly. There are many unique features on this ship like the Spa area, The Wintergarden, the infinity pool, and the specialty restaurants. The shore excursions left much to be desired. The excursion vehicles around the islands were difficult to board and the air conditioning was either absent or not working. Getting to the excursion vehicles was difficult due to the extreme heat and the necessary long walks. Some of the excursions were unnecessarily long and treacherous. We did not feel safe on some of them. The guides were entertaining and very informative. They made up for the uncomfortable vehicles. We had been on a Viking Rhine River Cruise. I do not like too much sun and heat so the Baltic had appeal. The Viking Star was beyond wonderful. The brochures do not do it justice. The care and attention to detail was exceptional. We were impressed by the warmth and sincerity of the staff and crew. The organization of tours was outstanding. I appreciated the security measures for leaving and returning to the ship. The optional shuttle bus for those who wanted to stay beyond the tour was a bonus. We loved the World Cafe! The choices were varied and I was always able to choose a fish portion. I love fish and was pleased to discover that Norwegian farm salmon was superior to Canadian farm salmon! The attention to detail was evident in service and cleanliness. There were so many options on board and at no time did we feel crowded. I commented to a friend back home that the lobby of the Royal York Hotel in Toronto was busier than any area of the Viking Star. If any one needs to be singled out for service above and beyond it is Rob Riddell, who did the tour outline for the port talk presentations. Our flights were delayed due to a strike by pilots of SAS. Bob appeared, took over, ushered us to a more comfortable area, gave us vouchers for coffee and snacks, dealt with the situation, updated us a regular intervals, and after nine hours gave us vouchers for taxis to and from the hotel. When we arrived we only had to say our last name and we were given room keys! Well done Rob Riddell. You removed so much stress for us and made a glitch an experience. We are so pleased we booked the flights through Viking. While on board we booked another cruise for 2018 to see Italy. I have wanted to see Italy for sometime; Ed was not too interested but after his Viking experience he is thrilled to go anywhere with Viking! Read Less

We had sailed with Viking on two previous river cruises, and respected their reputation for a customer-focused product. We were not disappointed. We like the quality level of Viking (very high), the inclusion of at least one tour per port, the outstanding food and restaurant offerings, and the itineraries. The ship was faultless and our cabin was spacious and very comfortable. The service is impeccable. We were not subject to ANY "gotcha's" or extraneous charges for this, that, and the other thing. We felt absolutely coddled the entire cruise. The excursions were uniformly terrific. The only criticism I had for Viking was that the pre-cruise extension in Iceland (before the Baltics cruise) was not up to the luxury standard of Viking. I hope they have responded to my concerns and improved that offering. Specifically, travelers to Reykjavik arrive in the very early morning (around 6 am) after travel on Icelandair (which offers no food whatsoever). The hotel room (which leaves a lot to be desired) is not available until mid-afternoon. If they are going to offer Iceland as a pre-cruise option, they need to have a hotel room available upon arrival. There were dozens of us who were miserable for at least 36 hours--the uncomfortable flight on Icelandair and the hours waiting for our hotel in a hungry and exhausted condition. That said, I would still highly recommend Viking. Read Less

We chose Viking because we had a great experience with Viking three years ago on a Rhine cruise. The cabin was beautiful, but there was nightly work being done on the deck above our cabin that woke us up almost every night. We complained, but it still happened. Also, upon boarding we had difficulty finding our cabin. When we boarded the river cruise, there was a crew member escorting every guest to their cabin. On the cruise ship, we were on our own and it was more difficult to find. Our cabin was in the front on the upper deck where only one set of elevators actually went to our floor. The restaurants were good, but choices were limited in some places. For example at the pool, it was the same menu every day. It would have been nice to have the restaurants feature foods from the area we were traveling. The only restaurant that did this was the World Cafe and that food was like cafeteria food. The staff, just like on the river cruise, was outstanding, the only difference was that they seemed over worked, and they talked about it. They were working long hours with short down time and they mentioned this to the passengers. We had two problems with shore excursions. In Santorino Viking should not have allowed "leisure walkers" to go on the shore excursions. The hills were too severe and the sidewalks too uneven. The guide did her best, but a few people on our tour and a person we ate dinner with basically sat on the bus the whole time. When we were on the river cruise cruise, Viking had a modified versions of the daily tours for "leisure walkers" which were the over 55 and had difficulty walking, had walkers ,etc. In Dubrovnik we had a tour guide who was not sensitive to the over 55 crowd. In Dubrovnik they have their own currency and all of the public rest rooms required exact change with that currency. Having arrived just that morning and not knowing this several people on out tour needed to use the rest room and had no where to go. They ended up walking back to the ship and missing out on the rest of the tour. Sounds crazy, but it's a problem for the over 55 group. I would love to do more cruising with Viking, but it is too expensive. It's a special occasion cruise company for us. i'd like to see you stop mailing me so many catalogs. I'm in the direct mail business, so I know how expensive these are. I get a piece of Viking mail almost daily; some days multiple pieces, plus getting emails a couple days a week. Perhaps if you saved money with the mailings you could reduce the price of your cruises. Read Less

We previously did two river cruises with Viking. This was our first ocean cruise with them and we will definitely do another. We're waiting for them to go to New Zealand and Australia! The Viking Star is a beautiful ship. We stayed in a Penthouse Suite and absolutely loved our room. The heated floors in the bathroom (so nice since we sailed in March), very comfortable king size bed, plenty of storage space, nice sitting area, mini bar, spacious balcony. Every crew member was always ready to help with a smile on their face. The spa was fun - we were able to use it even though we didn't purchase a separate service which was really nice as most cruise lines won't let you use the facilities unless you buy a service. We used the wet sauna and snow grotto twice, envigorating! All the food served on the ship was delicious. The food and wine pairings at Chef's Table were a lot of fun - especially for foodies. We also really enjoyed Manfredi's - great atmosphere. We are early to rise/early to bed so we didn't take part in any of the evening entertainment but it did all sound good. We did a few of the provided excursions, but the majority of what we did was paid excursions because we wanted to see more than what was in the local area. All of the tours were very interesting and the local guides were excellent. We highly recommend Viking Ocean Cruises. Read Less

The crew was friendly and ready to meet every need. The ship was a beauty and beyond state of the art. We had a penthouse Veranda stateroom which was spacious with ample dresser drawers, and closet space to meet our needs. The self service laundry and complimentary pressing service we were nice extras and the daily restocked beverages and snacks were more then we expected. We had traveled with Viking on a river cruise in China about two years before this trip. That cruise was one of the best we have ever experienced, so we wanted to cruise again with Viking. The ocean cruise in the western Mediterranean was an ideal trip to allow my wife to visit many of the places that I had visited on my tours of the Med while serving in the U. S. Navy. We experienced some new areas as well. I had never been to Corfu or Croatia. Those three stops were the best of the entire cruise. We had only one afternoon to explore Barcelona, but we enjoyed strolling the full length of the Ramblas. The ship was new, elegant, beautiful. The cabin was large with a fantastic balcony. Dining was more than we could have imagined (this was our 6th shipboard cruise). Every shore excursion was well organized, informative and enjoyable. My wife has limited mobility and uses a transporter chair most of the time. The crew and staff went above and beyond in helping us get on and off the ship, on walking tours, and on bus tours. The staff and crew were superb. We will definitely travel again with Viking. We are looking at the trip that includes Ireland, Scotland and England. Read Less
