51st Wedding Anniversary trip for the most wonderful girl in the world. The Viking Sky is a beautiful vessel. The room stewards were very friendly and efficient, although we did lose our first steward because he was selected for the Round the World cruise and sent home on leave to be with his family before the extended voyage (the best of the best!). ( I showed him his home on Bali using Google Maps satellite imagery and we became friends.) Food service was excellent and we used the World Cafe for most meals- the staff and food selections fit us better then the other venues, and the ice cream and chocolate cookies were beyond description. We particularly enjoyed the Port Call briefings and the art, history lectures. The Met's "Aida" opera was a great delight and a pleasant surprise. Our off-ship tours were excellent, the Rhodes tour guide was especially good. The three Israel tours (Old City & Modern Jerusalem, Jerusalem and Bethlehem, and Nazareth & the Sea of Galilee) brought us both a sense of wonder at the Life of Christ and his time and place. were particularly outstanding. A port change from Ashdod to Haifa resulted in our included tour taking longer than originally planned, but a meal was provided off-ship, proving the logistics staff at Viking was on top of events. Oh yes, seeing Stromboli erupt during the night passage to Naples was a highlight of the voyage. Read Less

Ports of Call were excellent! Ship was amazing! State rooms second to none! Food was mouthwatering! People were friendly! Excursions were fun and informative! On board entertainment was fun! The spa was wonderful, going from the snow room to the steam room and back and forth, followed by the hot tub and the cold water bucket challenge was refreshing and soothing! The guides on the excursions were excellent and the places we went were wonderful. Montserrat was beautiful and inspirational. Loved Barcelona, great walking city and so much to see. Florence was delightful as well. Weather cut short our Monaco stop but we still got to go into Monte Carlo and up to the Royal Castle. Even though we had to leave Monaco early, it gave us a chance to actually sail during the day as every other sailing was at night. The staff of the Viking Sun were extremely friendly and we enjoyed every minute on board! Read Less

This trip was a 50th birthday present to myself and a first on Viking. They are very organized, from arrival to departure. We were amazed at the attention to detail. They definitely go above and beyond. The cabin was nice size, plenty of closet space. Loved the heated bathroom floor. We ate at all the restaurants. The food was excellent. I looked forward to gelato every evening. The winter garden was a wonderful place to unwind, have afternoon tea with scones and finger sandwiches. The extra drink package was worth the price. The excursions were also well organized and the headsets, which are provided, allowed everyone to hear the background in history of the areas we toured. The tour guides were from the area and well versed in local history/customs. I would have liked more free time in our destinations, but I do realize that they need to adhere to a schedule. The tours gave us just a taste of the local culture and left me wanting to come back to experience more. We had a great experience and can't wait to go on another Viking cruise. Read Less

Celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary with a Mediterranean Cruise. We chose Viking because of its comprehensive itinerary of 6 countries in 13 days. The weather was great and the pre cruise and post cruise extensions greatly enhanced the actual cruise itself. The pre cruise extension enabled us to meet, and make, new friends that we enjoyed when embarking for the cruise itself. The shore excursions were interesting, fun and educational at the same time. The ship's cabin was a comfortable size and we very much enjoyed the heated bathroom floor. The food was plentiful, tasty and had something for every; plus, the included wine for lunch and dinner was a very nice addition. The crew members were very attentive to our requests and eager to make our experience special. This was our fourth cruise and first with Viking, we will definitely book with Viking again. The ship size was perfect for a more intimate experience, and did not feel like one was traveling with a whole city of people. Would definitely recommend to anyone wishing to do a Mediterranean cruise. Read Less

My husband and I selected Viking because of the itinerary and we were celebrating our wedding anniversary and birthdays. This was our first cruise ship experience and we wanted to go with the best. Viking did not disappoint. We arrived and our cabin was spacious and comfortable. The housekeeping staff was attentive, on point and always ready to fulfill a request. We explored the ship and was taken by all the attention to detail in the design and decorative accents. Our excisions were planned and the Viking team made sure all the logistics were taken care of so we just had to show up at the appointed time and place to enjoy our experiences. This made for a worry-free enjoyable vacation. Arrival back onboard the ship included friendly greetings from the staff and a visit to the various cocktail lounges to recount our day with others we just meet on the tours. The food variety, quality and options ensured something different and the entertainment was enjoyable. We had such a great time, we have already booked another cruise with Viking!! Read Less

We chose Viking after talking with friends who have done Mediterranean cruises and recommended a smaller ship experience, as well as doing some research on the best cruise line rankings. We were not disappointed!! The ship is amazing and comfortable. It is so easy to relax, or find things to do. What really makes the Viking experience stand out is the incredible staff! Everyone, and do mean everyone, is very friendly and helpful. Many of the waiters and bartenders knew our names after the first day and we had some amazing conversations with them about their home cities, working on the ship, ports of call, and our families. Amazing people! And the food was 5-Star! The chefs are incredible! This was our first time to Europe so we wanted to experience as much as we could in as many places as possible. That was why we chose to go on a ship, and chose this particular cruise with 10 ports of call. It was the trip of a lifetime! We did several of the included tours which gave a very good introduction to the cities, and then went off on our own exploration. Viking makes it very easy to get to and from the ship so you can explore as much as you like. We also upgraded our excursions in several ports and they were well worth it! Rome, Pompei, and Venice were some of the ones I would recommend looking into. The guides were all local and very good. The other great thing was that Viking had onboard historians that gave talks before each port of call. They were very entertaining and informative. It was also great to get the daily newsletter in our room with information on the next days activities on board and ashore, specific on excursions and times, and any specific details that we needed to be aware of in the next port. The overall experience exceeded my expectations on nearly every level! We are already looking into our next Viking cruise and have recommended them to all of our friends. It truly was the trip of a lifetime! Read Less

I’ve been on the ship (Viking Sky) before and it is very nice so we decided on scheduling another cruise with Viking. I was looking for a birthday cruise. Viking provides great service and even a bottle of sparkling wine (Sekt) and a cake on your birthday. Plus all the great restaurants, shipboard amenities, very nice spacious cabins, and comfort while you cruise. Really enjoyed the aquivet terrace for lunch al fresco. Excursions were well planned and very enjoyable. The transfers to the hotel and ship were smooth and the transfer from hotel to ship even included a free tour of Barcelona. We have already explored much of Barcelona on the extension before the cruise and enjoyed tapas and watching the Spanish (Catalans) celebrate the end of the holiday season on Three Kings Day when they actually celebrate and give. Gifts so our Barcelona tour on the morning of January 6 was very quiet. The cabin is very nice. Every cabin has a veranda and ours was a penthouse veranda on a middle deck. The bathroom is very functional and roomy for a ship. Good toiletries and high quality towels plus lots of storage for your kit. The heated floors in the bathroom are very nice especially on a cold morning. The cabin has lots of storage for clothes and everything that you might bring aboard. There is even a mini refrigerator with complementary drinks. Plus binoculars to use on the veranda, a hair dryer, and robes to wear to the spa. We used the outdoor hot tub, very nice. On previous trips we have used the indoor spa with hot tub, pool and snow grotto - a lot of fun. This trip we finally used the exercise room, which is included free, and has good quality machines. All of the restaurants are nice. We had lunch in the World Cafe and it has great variety of food and also had sit down multi course lunch one sea day in the Restaurant. Dinner was in The Restaurant most nights with local specialties or European food. The nights we ate in the upgraded restaurant - Manfredi’s was excellent - great Italian food and especially the steak Florentine. The Chef’s Table is also nice with food and wine pairings although frankly we don’t like it as much as the other restaurants. Breakfast is great with lots of choices at the World Cafe and one day we tried the Norse food at Mamsem’s although really just had a waffle. The ports on this trip are nice but not as special as other trips. Barcelona and Malaga were the best. Cartagena almost as nice. Vigo was interesting and we did the optional tour to Bayona. Portsmouth was a good port especially cruising right by the old town as we left the harbor. Read Less

Having greatly enjoyed our Viking Cruise of the Northern Mediterranean, we wanted to enjoy the experience of the destinations in the Southern Mediterranean, knowing the fine service and accommodations Viking provides. And we were not disappointed. Our cabin was beautiful and fully appointed, the service from EVERYONE on the ship was excellent, and the destinations very interesting. And, nicely, each destination was more interesting and beautiful than the one preceding, culminating in Barcelona. The smaller size of the Viking cruise ship makes for a very personal and efficient travel experience. We had total comfort at all the bars and dining areas. The food, whether fancy or casual, was terrific. Our excursions were well managed and the local guides in every instance were excellent. We particularly enjoyed our tour to the Argiolas Family Vineyards in Sardinia, as it showed us both the city and rural areas of the island. The Casbah Stroll tour in Algiers was unforgettable but be warned, it is a lot of walking on uneven pavement and steps. Well worth it for anyone, even older people, with no difficulty walking. We recommend that people extend in Rome before the cruise to avoid the stress and fatigue that come with arriving on the same day as boarding, and that people extend in Barcelona because it is one of the most fascinating cities in the world. We would love to do this cruise, or any Viking cruise, again. Read Less

Would have loved to have more items from the geographies' visited. *Service in the bars was very good, attentive and friendly. *Lack of Holiday decorations was disappointing...ship was sterile in appearance (previously enjoyed Crystal cruises...Holiday trimming there was amazing!) *Scandinavian restaurant menu (fixed) was disappointing and we cancelled our second reservation. Believe the party we travelled with also cancelled their reservation...lack of choice primary reason. *When returning from Taste of Sicily shore excursion, all restaurants were closed except Grill...however due to the number of buses returning simultaneously, people were in the cue for 45-50 minutes...seems to me that the timing of this excursion should have been better managed by Viking. We were looking for a smaller ship that visited different ports than the larger cruise lines. We really enjoyed the smaller cruise ship. It was easy to get on/off at our ports, the optional and included shore excursions were very nice. No children made for a nice experience onboard. The only negative was the entertainment was not nearly as good as the bigger ships, but I didn't go on the cruise for the entertainment. The food is excellent, even having high end food like foie gras and lobster. The optional dining experiences (all included) were terrific - very much like eating at a very nice restaurant. Our cabin steward was excellent and made sure we had everything we needed. We booked the silver spirits package and enjoyed diet cokes throughout the day and a couple of cocktails at night. We booked a river cruise with Viking and hope they are as nice as this cruise ship experience. Read Less

We always wanted to go to Europe, but didn't want to go alone since we don't speak any languages besides English. This was the perfect way to see so much, have wonderful experiences, and truly leave the worries at home. Viking met us at the airport in Barcelona, managed our luggage, took us to the ship, and made it very relaxing. Once on board, the accommodations were exquisite, the food was marvelous, and the staff was very attentive to our needs. The included excursions were very well planned. The extra excursions offered were good values for what they included. We were definitely overwhelmed with the quality of the vacation. If we had to change one thing, we would have upgraded our airfare to first class so we would have been more well-rested after traveling all night. The coach flights on Delta were nice, but the seats were quite confining for two tall people. So we were worn out for our first night in Barcelona and spent it aboard ship. I would recommend getting the larger cabin that includes the silver beverage package. It is well worth the money if you enjoy fine wine. I can't wait to explore with Viking again. Read Less

Viking Ocean Cruises is clearly still working out the kinks. We were on a Cruise through the Mediterranean for 9 days ending with an extension in Rome, Italy. As we arrived in Barcelona and saw the filthy and vulgar graffiti on the way to the ship, we were clearly unprepared for what was about to unfold over the next several days. To sum up the time on the ship it was overall mediocre at best often being reminded by staff that this is their final cruise which reflected in the efforts to be attentive to the guests. They all appeared very exhausted and short tempered when asked to do what we simply paid a generous amount for to relax and enjoy. The best way to describe the food is recycled and nothing to get overly excited about because of the redundancy and no creativity. Concierge was extremely inconsistent causing an abundance of confusion when trying to schedule and enjoy the expensive excursions paid for in advance. We were given mixed messages on several occasions causing us to never get off the ship to experience Barcelona because the buses had flat tires and were broken down. We found ourselves overwhelmed by fumes and awoken by grinding engines porting at 6am or screaming messages over the intercom awaking us at 7am. We also had the veranda cleaned which started at 7am, and my point here is that we could never sleep in or feel rested. As we moved in to other ports, we found ourselves sitting on buses that were 100 degrees and also full of fumes from sitting idle for hours. The excursion in Florence had to be the worst! As the guide rushed through the uneven streets at a very fast pace, we had an older woman do a face plant in front of us. Because she was rushing it took some time for her to realize several of us were left behind attending to the lady that fell. My husband and I witnessed her fall and decided to stay close to her until we re-boarded the buses. The lunch served on this excursion was horrible and there are no other words to describe it. As we wrapped up the cruise portion of our trip, we had high hopes that the extension in Rome was going to make up for all the unfortunate experiences so far, but boy were we wrong! The "five star" hotel was nothing short of an average Hilton or Marriott. To sum up Rome...it is NOT safe with street peddlers grabbing you and forcing their goods on you, or it is NOT safe due to the drug dealings we witnessed in front of us walking around the Spanish steps area, it is NOT safe because the volume of people versus the police is about 1ooo to 1. We will NEVER put ourselves in this position again! The absolute worst part of the trip was trying to get home. We were so thrilled to have made it to the airport and thought this nightmare was close to over when the flight was cancelled leaving us stranded. We stood for SEVEN hours to get rerouted with no water. Again, the coordination was left up to the incompetent Viking staff to reroute luggage and several individuals, it was awful. Long and short a day and 1/2 later we had to stay in a 1-star hotel which I might add may have been nicer than the $600 a night hotel in Rome. We incurred additional costs for food, etc. This trip was to be our 10-year anniversary and a Honeymoon we never had. We have tried over the past couple months to not remember it all as bad and have tried to laugh about a few of the instances, but unfortunately, this was a VERY costly mistake. After tying to explain our experience with Viking we were offered a pathetic $500 voucher. It is obvious that Viking does NOT care about customer retention and apparently has the financial backing to STEAL from people who trusted in their brand. What I have summarized here doesn’t mention everything but highlights hopefully enough for folks to be educated prior to spending tens of thousands of dollars on an empty promise of EXPLORING THE WORLD IN COMFORT…Don’t let them pull the wool over your eyes too!!! Really wanted to see that part of Germany/Hungary. Enjoyed the ship and cruise however due to the Danube being low we had to change ships 3 times. We were told ahead of time the Danube would be low and we'd have t change ships in ONE time. Viking was very efficient about getting our luggage and moving it to the next port. They certainly had a plan in mind for this type of problem. Unpacking a d packing 3 times was a bit much. The reason my husband and I like to cruise is so we can relax when we get to the next city. We were alway thinking now we have to pack again..or live out of our luggage. If we had it to do over again, I would have postponed the cruise till the river was adequate to cruise without changing ships. Missed a few sights we really wanted to see due to having to be bussed to the next ship. That was very disappointing. Sorry I couldn't have given the cruise part a better grade. Staff was excellent. We had a terrific Experience on our Viking Grand European River Cruise, so we decidied on the Western Med Ocean Cruise to experience that area for the first time. We had wonderful experiences onboard and on our tours. We had terrific local guides who spoke suspect English and would be able to go back to the villages each afternoon for more. Our tour director, Drew, was talented, professional and personable. He even performed in the ensembles in the evening shows. The restaurants offered a choice of fine dining and convenient quality food in the World Cafe. It’s always nice that Viking have the beer and wine included with your meals. The entire staff were friendly and professional, and always striving to please. The best part of the Ocean Cruise is having the great access to your daily destinations without having to pack and unpack your luggage’s. The itenarary that Viking set on this trip was fabulous, allowing for maximizing our interest in the beautiful Med. villages and iconic Renaissance City’s we toured. Highly recommend that one does an extension in Rome as we did, and wish we would have started our trip early in Barcelona before we embarked. Read Less

It was a 50th anniversary gift from our children. The experiences were amazing! We wish we had more time in a few of the ports to see more things. Disappointed to not get into casino in Monte Carlo as needed ID and I had left mine onboard the ship. The food and service was incredible. The employees were the friendliest and most accommodating I have ever been with. Our cabin steward was the most efficient and took exceptional care of us and our cabin. The number of passengers was not large so there was minimal crowding getting off the ship and back on. Dining was fantastic with excellent food, presentation, and service. The excursions were well planned and executed. Entertainment was pretty good and we met the performers as they were easily accessible to the passengers. We felt very, very welcomed to the ship. We would recommend a cruise on Viking Sky highly. Read Less

My wife and I booked cabin 5083 originally, a penthouse veranda, as she was worried about motion sickness. A few days before the cruise was to depart, Our travel agent said that Viking had upgraded us to cabin 8007, a jr. penthouse suite. After reading several reviews of the 8000 series cabins, all but one cruiser stated that they felt no or minimal motion on that deck. Apparently my wife is a little more susceptible to motion as we left Rome at 10pm to cruise to Livorno and my wife slept poorly. We spent two days in port and she was better, but as we left Livorno at 6pm for Monaco, the motion sickness became so bad she didn't sleep and we had to see the ship's doctor(an $85 fee) to get motion sickness pills. We missed the Monaco excursion, but Viking refunded the cost. We asked if we could move to a lower deck and since the ship was almost full, we took cabin 3031, a veranda stateroom. Viking stated that they would not refund the difference for what we paid for the original room and the lower grade room since it was a motion sickness issue. Between the pills and the lower cabin, we were able to finish the cruise in relative comfort. As many others have stated, the ship is beautiful, clean, and well maintained.Cabins were cleaned twice a day, no one asked us to but anything, and all staff members were friendly and courteous. Food was excellent and, plentiful, and varied. My only complaint with dining was that after my wife had a glass of coke with lunch or dinner, she was not offered a refill. The included shore excursions we took were rather dull and short; we took a few long optional excursions and enjoyed them. We enjoyed the Beatles and ABBA shows, but outside of those, there was not a lot of entertainment unless you like classical pieces or acoustic guitar solos. Singers in Torshaven, the night lounge, did a nice enough job though. I did spend a lot of time in the spa which is extremely well kept and is probably one of the best at sea. Read Less

Wanted to visit friends in Barcelona and coupled this trip with seeing them after the ship docked there. Good ports -of-call with interesting sights to see. The only issue was the weather, which we had hoped would not be a major factor. But is was. Lots of rain in this trip. The ship provided many great tours. The staff were attentive and friendly. The entertainment was super. Enjoyed the tours, which were both educational as well as interedting. One tour had an inexperienced guide who miscounted at the meeting place and left us behind. This made for a difficult time for us. We enjoyed meeting new people in the ship and touring the kitchen and Bridge were a real highlight. The food was exceptional and varied. The restaurants were terrific and the food was fantastic. We did not make it to the Italian restaurant as we did not know about it at first and then found it was booked solid. This speaks for itself. The ship was beautiful in every way. We enjoyed the seafood meal on the upper deck near the pool and went to several 4 o’clock teas. This was relaxing and fun. Thank you. There were many factors on why we chose this cruise. Two of the main factors were that this was a fantastic itinerary that visited the Holy Land and secondly, this was an adult cruise ship that did not have a casino. Many of our expectations were surpassed. The crew were just fantastic! From the moment we boarded, we could tell that the crew just loved working for Viking. This positive attitude permeated throughout the entire ship. Special mention goes out to Vikesh from Manfredi's. He was very accommodating to all our requests. Even though we sometimes wanted dishes from different restaurants, Vikesh would go out of his way to make it happen. Towards the end of the cruise, my wife mentioned to Vikesh that although the food on the cruise was fantastic, she just felt like having some basic Indian curry. We didn't expect it but he came back 5 minutes later and told us that he had spoken to the chef and all had been arranged. The curry would be served for dinner in our suite at 8pm that evening. Vikesh did not just arrange it, he personally delivered it to our suite. Just outside our suite was the Explorers Lounge. We spent every evening there chatting with the bar staff. We especially enjoyed the company of Eriona, Cecy and Stoyam. They were just so witty and a really pleasure to be around. On one of the evenings on the cruise, the waters were rather rough and we were feeling a little seasick. Erin concocted her special anti seasick drink which really did make us feel a lot better. Yovitza and Matthew always made sure that our wine fridge was well stocked up with our favourite wines. Having said that, I must say that the entertainment was lacking. Especially the four young singers that really couldn't sing. They were screeching and were very off key. Thankfully our Cruise Director Heather sang so beautifully. Additionally, the sound system in the theatre wasn't great either. It lacked power and clarity and didn't do justice to Heather's immense talent. It would probably benefit from a tuneup from a really good sound engineer. We liked that there were always port talks that were given by highly qualified speakers. Shore excursions were also very well organised and guides were very professional. Buses were comfortable and were never filled to the brim. In fact, most of the time, the buses were only about half-full, which made it very comfortable. It also meant that the guides had quality time with us and that we never had to wait too long for anyone. Overall, it was a very positive experience. The only thing that keeps me from giving a 5 star rating was the rather poor entertainment. Read Less

Our first Viking Cruise, and what was the most memorable to us was the fact that there was no casino, no inch of gold, no constant announcements about tacky sales. What it did have was resident historians who provided lectures as well as informal opportunities to ask additional questions about the ports and their cultural and historical histories. I might also mention that our Cruise Director was a former Metropolitan Opera Mezzo Soprano who delighted us with several inspiring performances. If I had a single criticism, it would be that while we visited all the proclaimed ports, what was not known at the time of sign up, was the distance from the cities that they mentioned from our port dock. Paris was one of our featured 'stops.'....Paris was a 3.5 hour bus ride from the port each way for a couple of exploration hours. Also at odds with other cruise experiences was that you, upon payment, had to manage in advance the tours you desired. By the time we figured this out, the ones we wanted were already booked to capacity. We had a Jr. Penthouse Suite and the room and amenities did not disappoint. The dining experiences were always memorable, and the Chef offered cooking classes that I enjoyed very much. Embarkation was smooth and uneventful...the way it should always be. The Public Rooms were tasteful and the ship had a 'quiet' appeal that brought serenity to the sea. The spa experience with an actual 'snow' room was refreshing and should not be missed by any traveler. I would highly recommend Viking as a cruise experience provider. Read Less

My wife and I always wanted to cruise the Mediterranean. And with the extraordinary river cruises we had taken through Europe thought the new Viking Ocean might be worth the try as we have truly enjoyed their river cruises. Wow, are we glad we did. The service level, ship appointments and design, the food, and the excursions were all done exceptionally tastefully and well. Staying in the Penthouse Jr Suite, the cabins were aesthetic, modern, and thoughtfully and wonderfully designed. And very comfortable. Though there are luxury cruises that cater more to the excesses of the ultra rich, Viking in my wife's and my opinion, has found the balance between great comfort and over the top opulence. All restaurants and food / wine were good to great. My wife especially loved Manfredi's (the Italian restaurant on board) and I particularly enjoyed the Chef's Table (with wine pairings). The Chef's Table is a bit more for the adventurous diner as you need to trust your chef. I did and was not disappointed. All Viking excursions are focused on the experience and on insights. For the curious mind. And their ships, staff and excursions reflect that focus and reward those that are still in a learning mode. From former teacher to corporate executive, the people we met were more of a similar mind ... explore, meet others from different backgrounds, and do so in a bit of comfort. And though the weather was about as bad as it could be in an area of 300 days of sun (it rained 6 of the 7 days on our sail), we bore in mind there is no bad weather, just poor clothing decisions. The Viking Sky amenities was so amazing we hardly noticed the weather between the pool, lounges, onboard wifi, libraries, fitness centers and spas. We enjoyed it so much we have booked 3 additional sails: Australia, Viking Homelands, and Around the Caribbean and can't wait to see if they maintain their high bar. Read Less

After our amazing Viking River cruise in 2011, we swore we'd never do an ocean cruise again! We eventually did do an Alaska cruise which was great, but the whole time we said, "It's not Viking!" So when Viking started their ocean cruises we began looking for the best opportunity to sail with them again. We wanted to sail over spring break which narrowed down our dates and ended up on the Italian Sojourn cruise. We had always wanted to see more of Italy and the dates worked. Our first impression of the Sky was one of awe. This was a five-star floating hotel! Our cabin (5034 - PV2 cat) was beautiful and spacious beyond our expectations. The finishes on this ship are gorgeous - the wood, furnishings, and even the handrails are beautiful! We toured the ship and settled into the Explorer Lounge to await the arrival of our friends. It is the most special place on the entire ship -- chairs and sofas of the softest leather, a gas fireplace, a bar, and the most spectacular views. Our friends were next door to us in 5036 (DV2 cat) - noticeably smaller but spacious enough. The service on the Sky was nothing less than spectacular. Our cabin steward saw to our every need, usually before we asked. Every waiter, bartender, tour guide, and entertainer we came across was friendly, spoke perfect English, and anticipated our needs. The entertainment was just right for this ship - mostly soft, acoustic music in the common areas and restaurants (the piano, flute, violin, and cello players were amazing) and the shows like the Broadway review and Beatles shows were excellent as well. The food! Most cruises I've been on (with the exception of the Viking River cruise) have food that looks better than it tastes. The meals we had on board are equal to any luxury restaurant on land. How they manage to feed 900 passengers and make each meal more special than the last one is beyond me. The breakfast buffet in the World Cafe was plentiful. Snacks were available throughout the day, as was bottled water. Our meal in Manfredi's will go down as an all-time travel favorite. Our meals in The Restaurant were likewise memorable and anticipated. The itinerary was a great overview of southern Italy. I was shocked to see how industrial the port of Naples is and was glad we had taken the excursion to Herculaneum. We debated between that excursion and the one to Pompeii. Several on the Herculaneum trip had been to Pompeii before and thought Herculaneum was far superior. It was astounding! We took the excursion to Taormina in Sicily and that was delightful as well. We did not book an excursion in Crotone as the ones we wanted were sold out so we did the walking tour on our own (the bus takes you into the town and brings you back). This was the only port I was disappointed in and would highly encourage you to book an excursion on this day. Bari was stunning -- another included walking tour, but this one was amazing! I'm glad we stayed in the city for that one. In Croatia, we took a bus from Šbenik to Split to Diocletian's Palace. Highly recommended! And finally, we just did the Doge's Palace walking tour in Venice which gave us plenty of time to explore on our own. From door to door, our trip was perfect (even the predicted rainy weather held off!) and I am already looking forward to cruising with Viking again. Read Less

What started out to be a Viking River Cruise for us morphed into a Viking Ocean Cruise after a series of changes, flip-flops, and renditions. My wife wanted to visit Europe with her 81 year old mother, and neither had ever been. I had been to most of the ports we hit, but on Navy ships as a young Sailor, so let's just say I didn't have the good taste or cultural awareness then that I have now. My MIL's gentleman friend was also well-travelled in Europe, but mostly on short-term business trips. So we all hammered this idea out between us until what we decided on was the Mediterranean Odyssey on April 3, leaving from Venice. I have to say in a nutshell that Viking Cruise Lines and this cruise in particular exceeded almost all of our expectations greatly, and we feel like we have had the trip and vacation of a lifetime. Not perfect, but pretty darned good. The two things I didn't care for were the front man at Manfredi's, who was too pompous and self-important for my liking, and that Viking Air hooked us up with the flight schedule from hell on the way back to the US from Barcelona. No way should we have had a 5.5 hour layover in Paris. My fault for believing what the agent on the phone said, instead of having all the flight schedules in front of me to begin with. Other that those two things, no complaints. Special kudos to JoJo, Ruby, our cabin steward (whose name slips my mind), and all the other stellar crew members we came in contact with. They were top-notch employees, and made our stay aboard superb. The ship was immaculately clean at all times, in good working order, and quiet and comfortable. Understated elegance! The food was good, the shows were good, and the spa was OUTSTANDING. We managed to vegetate down there several times. Loved hanging out on the pool deck and in the Explorer's Lounge too. We took advantage of both the free and paid excursions, and used my previous port knowledge to tailor what tours were best for us. Favorite excursions were Amalfi, Florence (David/Uffizzi), Nice/Eze, and the Flamenco show in Barcelona. Least favorite was Corfu, but it would have been Toulon if I didn't know better already and had gone on that free port excursion. We opted for Cassis instead, which I was able to return to after 38 years. Still as awesome as in 1979! So if you are reading this, do yourself a favor and try a Viking Ocean Cruise aboard the Sky. Looks expensive on paper, but worth it with all the extras that are included. Read Less

Traveled with Viking River cruises previously. We were looking for smaller ship experience for our first trip to the Mediterranean. Everything exceeded expectations. Daily meetings in the theater were very interesting and informative regarding the next days destination and the various excursions available. Complimentary shore excursions were very good and informational. For more in depth exploration, good selection of additional shore excursions were available and well worth the additional expense. All excursion guides were very interesting and easy to understand. Variety of food and complimentary wines through each region of the cruise were very good. Almost good enough to qualify as a gourmet theme. Ship staff and personnel were very friendly and efficient. The cruise director was exceptionally great, both during his official presentations and when met unofficially around the ship. Enjoyed the pianist and classical string quartet during the evenings, both before and after the evening dinner. An unexpected impressive memory was sailing around Stromboli, the active volcanic island during our evening dinner, prior to arriving in Naples. Read Less

We booked this Cruise almost one year ago and it seemed to be forever before our sail date, but we are on the ship now. I have cruised before but my Husband has not. This is his first cruise. The ships I have been on in the past are the 3500 guest Carnival and the like. Did I enjoy them? Not really and had long ago decided not to cruise again. Then Viking Ocean popped up. 900 some odd guests. Could this be better? We did a lot of research - a lot. We read reviews, watched videos and talked and talked. Finally we decided to pull the trigger and book. Other LARGE ships tend - in my opinion - to have overdone the decor to a point of garish mashup of colour and glitz. Not impressed. VIKING OCEAN - SKY - is what I would call "quiet elegance" and you can immediately see that there is no expense spared to quality and every element of the decor is calm and tasteful. The wood and furniture and the upholstery and the art are exceptional. They have produced such an elegant decor that you just feel comfortable. You never turn a corner and see a Las Vegas looking room and there are no casinos or nightclubs like the big ships. This is truly a ship where you feel calm, relaxed, and feel like you are staying where quality is number one in design. I am pleasantly surprised because I had doubts on a smaller ship whether my Husband and I would feel at home because we are a married Gay male couple from Canada. There has been no issue and I would recommend Viking to other Gay couples. Viking Ocean is not for a "party party" kind of vacation. Yes, the average age on board is probably about 60, but there are enough younger folks that you don't feel out of place if you are in your 40s or younger. We have met now many people that are of various ages and all is great. The Crew are exceptional. I am going to give shout outs here to some. Forgive me because these are the ones that we have had repeated interactions with but every Crew member is exceptional. Crew Shoutouts: JoJo - Guest Services Manager John - Server in The World Cafe Darko - Server in The Chef's Table and The World Cafe Giselle - Server in The Restaurant Vicky - Server in The Restaurant Romney - Server in The Explorer Lounge Rizalina - Server in The Wold Cafe Willy - Our exceptional Stateroom Steward (and his team) Jesper - Therapist in the Spa In general the staff are exceptional. They go out of their way to greet you and make you feel at home. No request is too big or too small. The staff above have in a couple of days learned our Stateroom number by heart - know our names and welcome us using our names - know that we like to start our meal with Sparkling wine and then move to red or white... This is quite refreshing when the world we live in today is not concerned with the customer experience - Viking have done an exceptional job providing an experience that you will remember and recommend. The food - excellent. We have eaten in all but Manfredi's so far and the food is outstanding in all venues. We have our reservation tomorrow in Manfredi's and I am certain that we will be impressed there too. We opted for all the included excursions and we have had our expectations exceeded with each one so far. The guides are knowledgable and very enjoyable to spend a morning or afternoon with. The Spa is my favourite place to visit after each day's excursion. We do the "Nordic thing" and hop from steam to snow grotto or the sauna to the cold dipping pool... Just refreshes you before dinner. The Nordic Spa experience is exceptional and so well appointed. Again, they have thought of everything. There is so much more that I can tell you but then I would be writing for pages! We WILL be sailing on Viking again in the future and most probably many times! Read Less
