We really enjoyed this cruise, our first Viking Ocean Cruise. It was nice not to have photographers, daily advertisements in our cabin and no gambling. Beautiful ship and excellent staff and the food was wonderful. Overall the premium excursions were excellent. I hope that the ‘included’ excursions improve to the quality that Viking River Cruises has provided for many years. Often these excursions were too short and we drove past sights but couldn’t go in to see and hear the history inside the buildings. On one day we did two different excursions which included a major cathedral. On the first one we drove through the parking lot and on the second one the bus parked and we walked around the cathedral and to the view point but never went inside. On the excursion to North Cape we didn’t even have a tour guide for the hour and a half drive (each way) that we could have received a lot of history of what we were passing and other details that make tours most interesting. I hope this improves. Read Less

Have previous positive cruises with Viking - river and ocean. Everything went smooth and the cruise was very enjoyable! However, the diappointing part of the trip was that due to rough seas - we were unable to go to the port of Portico, Portugal, and Viking NEVER offered to stop at another port or offer any type of reimbursement, future discount, or complintary gift from the region as a consolitory gift for not being able to visit that port. I would travel with Viking again in the future as this was our 3rd Viking cruise. It would be nice to have a variety of entertainment as on the river cruises with local talent (i.e., Fago singers - were FABULOUS), but having the same lecturers and lounge singers on the entire cruise - got old, fast, and the musical shows were very old (i.e., Beatles music, etc.) - need more modern alternatives for the younger cruisers. As far as service and dining it was exceptional!! And, words cannot describe the shore excursions and Rob, the Shore Excursion Director - he went above and beyond in any and every possible way to get not only my husband and I, but other passengers as well the experience we were all seeking - he and his staff provided SUPERB customer service - he and his staff is what makes Viking the superior cruise line!! Wonderful itinerary, with highlights in Spain, Lisbon, a pleasant surprise in St. Helier, Amsterdam and the Keukenhoff, St. Petersburg, and Stockholm. The ship was superb, and the Captain and Crew top notch The food was fantastic as was the selection for wines and beer with the meals. One area of improvement is to have a more transparent system for reserving the specialty restaurants. it seemed that a small amount of people kept others of us from having more reasonable opportunities to dine in those venues, but otherwise, superb. Manfredi's was fantastic, but would have liked the opportunity to dine there a time or two more. The resident historian and guest lecturers were fantastic. The ability to learn and enrich around stops and environs was something I really liked. The entertainment overall was well done, although a few shows I would have preferred a different theme, and what a gift it was to have our cruise director, Aaron with the entertainment background. What a voice? The gym was a welcome addition, and well run. I really needed this on a cruise of this length. The ports were well selected, and logistically, they went generally smooth. We weren't able to get into Porto because we were weathered out, but sometimes that happens. Overall, my wife and I commented the other night that this was our best cruise so far, and it really had to do with the selection of ports (itinerary), the ship and crew, and the duration (which accented the trip). Bravo, overall. Read Less

Magnificient small, large ship - 930 passengers but never felt like that many people including little on/off wait time. 11 countries, great destinations. 90% Americans, nearly all > 50, no children. Boarded several hours before published time, bring cruise confirmation document. Security screening re-boarding at every port similar to boarding an airplane. Nice to have 5-6 days here and there at sea for a break from daily tours with plenty to do onboard including informative lectures. Booked 10 days before departure. Had 0 excursions booked before departure, made excursion requests upon boarding, wait listed for some but eventually got everything we requested. Free tour at every port plus 6-12 optional daily tours at extra cost (suggest budget $25-$75 per person per day). Need to book some fee tours to get full experience. Free shuttle bus into town (and free time but not in Russia due to Visa limitations) at most ports, even in-town docking was still generally too far to walk (unlike many river cruise ports). Some ports are distant (3 hours one-way complimentary bus or train) from major cities (Paris, Berlin) with optional more local tours. Some passengers met online via Cruise Critic prior to trip and booked private excursions. We were unable to dock at Porto, Portugal due to weather. Cabin was excellent, Internet surprisingly available much of the time, works best for email and searches but not good for large downloads. Beware that your international calling packages from your phone company likely does not not cover calls made from sea. 3 self-serve washer/dryer units on each level (laundry detergent free) allow you to pack less. Our room was near elevator, no noise, very convenient. Use in-cabin safe for valuables. USA electrical outlets, no power converters required in cabin. Food very good. No extra charge for food. Complimentary wine at meals. Probably 6 places to eat, 2 require reservations - book these prior to your trip or asap after boarding. Despite free on board food, we enjoyed grabbing lunch in outdoor cafes in town to feel in the environment and to sample local cuisine. Pools, Nordic center, exercise equipment. No art auctions, no selling photographs, no casinos, etc. Crew tips are automatically added to your checkout invoice. Read Less

Barcelona Baltic Beyond = best bang for the buck; sailed to many countries; if we cross the Atlantic, we stay as long as possible on ship. Crew was the best Viking crew we have encountered altho all other Viking crews were very good. (previously 2 Viking river) Ate mostly in World Cafe; could not beat the selections; love trying different foods and the small plates at many stations were perfect. Love that the entree selections could also be sized down; entrees were amazing esp if you like meat, wild game; venison was excellent as was the duck and lamb; food station folks were beyond helpful, courteous and aimed to please; EVERYTHING was fresh and made on board including every piece of bread, pastry, and gelato. Five flavors of gelato daily with two flavors rotating daily. Table service was friendly and impeccable; servers took the time to learn about the daily wines the night before and were happy to explain them; also happy to keep your glass full. Captain and many crew also ate at World Cafe and were accessible to passengers despite trying to eat their meal. Ship is masterfully appointed and as another already mentioned, seemed lean, clean, and slightly more masculine than feminine in textures, colors, design. Fine by me, a female. Cabin crew were attentive, excellent, and cared about keeping us safe during a period of high winds and sea. Cannot think of a way to improve the ship or the itinerary. All but two tours excellent; mediocre Helsinki and Stockholm; tour these on your own. Read Less

When we saw the itinerary for this trip we were immediately interested. It included 10 Countries and 15 cities, many of which we had not visited before. We signed on 3 weeks before the departure date because this package including air fare looked to enticing. We took a pre-tour package of 2 nights in Madrid. The ship is beautiful, its a great size with 900+ passangers. The crew is terrific, they do an amazing job day in and day out. We cant say enough good things about the crew. The food is very good. There is a good variety in the 5 restaurants, and the food is fresh, well prepared, and welll served. Each of the restaurants has unique offerings in and pleasing ambiance. Plus there is 24 hour room service. The cabin itself is a nice home base for this long of a trip. It is roomy and has many very nice features - like heated bathroom floor, the makeup desk, the good sized lanai, etc. The ports were a great selection and there was an included excursion at each port. The extra excursions we took were all good value for the money and well done. One highlight of the trip was the included excursion to Berlin. Viking chartered a private train to take the 700+ passangers that selected this included excursion. We had a very knowledgeable tour guide in each train car who explained where we were going, what we would be seeing, and what our options would be for the time we would be "on our own". When we arrived in Berlin we got a bus tour of the city with photo ops at the major tourist sites. After time on our own we were bused back to the train. On our train ride home our tour guide came thru the cabin offering water, wine, beer, pretzels etc. When we arrived back at the ship we walked into the terminal and were met by a German Band playing, singers singing, waiters with champagne and appetizers, and the entire crew lining the way to the gangplank in their best uniforms, clapping and singing us home. It was truly a special moment. When we got back to our cabin, we found a plate of cockiness waiting for us. It was the perfect end to a great day. The entertainment on the ship was surprisingly good. We have been on many cruises where the entertainment was "ok", but this was really good entertainment. The enrichment speakers were also really good, very knowledgeable, and interesting to listen to. Whoever lined them up did a great job. Read Less

My husband spotted this itinerary about a year and a half before we sailed and it was hard to wait. The ship was new and clean and spacious - it never felt crowded (except sometimes a little when we went from the Star Theater to The Restaurant. Our cabin was pretty spacious and well appointed. Our steward was fabulous and took very good care of us. He and the entire crew anticipated what we needed or wanted before we did! The food was delicious and there were plenty of choices. We enjoyed Manfredis a few times and The Kitchen Table once. Both were excellent. The only thing we didn't like about The Restaurant was getting seated near the kitchen. It was disruptive. I really appreciated having the gym on the ship. I worked out several days and that made me feel good. I have a regular exercise program at home. The entertainment and activities kept us engaged. My husband really enjoyed the lectures. The service was fabulous! As I said before the entire crew anticipated what we needed or wanted and provided it before we knew we needed it! The ports were great, but we were sorry we had to sail by Porto without seeing it due to rough seas. St Petersburg was especially wonderful. The included excursions were good, but most were sort of cookie cutter in that they were all basically windshield tours of the city. Chartering the train to Berlin was brilliant and you should think about doing the same thing for the trip to Paris (we didn't go on that because we did Paris and the Heart of Normandy in Aug 2015). Some friends went with us and were totally blown away. It was great not being photographed or nickled and dimed at every turn or having casinos on board. Read Less
