I hadn’t been to any of the destinations on this cruise but the destination I was really excited about was Eidfjord, and I wasn’t disappointed. We flew to Bergen and were met by Viking representatives at baggage reclaim. As soon as our luggage appeared we were escorted to the waiting transfer minibus. As we arrived late afternoon we went straight up to our cabin after a very smooth check in and welcome glass of champagne. Our cases arrived a few minutes later with our cabin steward, who introduced himself and was very helpful and friendly throughout the cruise, as were all the ships company, from cleaners and maintenance engineers to the officers and entertainment team. Our cabin was a deluxe veranda, and very spacious and well equipped. The wardrobe was very roomy with extra hangers available from the cabin steward. All cabins have a balcony, which is not only great for early evening drinks, but also early morning sailing into port. We got up at 6 on the morning as we sailed into Stockholm, to see all the tiny islands. Spectacular! And it was wonderful in Eidfjord to be able to sit and relax with a drink in such a beautiful setting. There were several very gifted classical musicians on board who rotated around the public areas- pianist, guitarist and string duo. They provided a very pleasant atmosphere to relax in. A resident singing group performed in concerts in the theatre accompanied by the resident band , all excellent value. There are several restaurants which all provide a very high standard of service and a wide range of choices, with special menus to reflect the port being visited. I am vegetarian and there was always plenty of choice. Hygiene is very important on a ship, and there were wash basins and sanitisers at the entrance to the World Cafe, which is a buffet. The toilets around the ship were spotless and were checked very regularly. Handrails were also often cleaned during the day and I felt that the standard of cleanliness at all times, throughout the ship, was extremely high. The public areas of the ship never felt overcrowded- never any need to reserve a lounger in the pool area! Although most of the passengers were of an age, there was plenty to appeal to the younger end of the range including the gym, a wonderful spa and range of entertainment. We were very lucky to have such good weather throughout our cruise. It was only raining on the last couple of days, and even then we managed to dodge the showers on our shore excursions. As local guides were employed by Viking, it was fascinating to hear their personal experiences as well as learning so much about our destinations. We had a wonderful holiday and would recommend it to anyone who is interested in experiencing interesting places in an inspiring setting , and not to those expecting entertainment 24/7. Read Less

The cruise was nice, but it fell a little short of my expectations. Most all of the staff was very friendly, but being in the explorer suite we expected a little more of a personable experience like we have received on other cruise lines. Our suite had several mechanical issues (we got locked out of our room twice, tv was serviced three times but still did not work properly, outside door hatch was not latched properly and banged open and closed all night, toilets didn’t work one morning). It would be nice to have a butler service like other cruise lines, and a direct phone number to that person if they are needed. The entertainment most evenings was only at 9:15 pm. We are accustomed to having the option of an early or a late show. We were not interested in waiting until late evening to see a show. A 6:30 and 9:15 would be a much better option. Not everyone wants to stay up that late. Read Less

The Viking Homelands itinerary seemed perfect for us and though we hadn’t been on a Viking Cruise before, had always heard good things. The experience from start to finish was amazing and, now that we have been thoroughly spoiled, would find this cruise line hard to beat. The friendly staff’s prompt attentiveness and professionalism, exceptional logistics from embarking to disembarking (and all in-between), well planned tours in each country and variety of dining options exceeded our expectations. The ship is so well laid out that you can find quiet getaway areas or seek out activities to join, as you’d like. It never felt too crowded. The Viking staff take all feedback to heart and they seem to be continually looking for ways to achieve the wow factor for all of their guests. It was quite relaxing to leave all of the details to Viking and we are delighted to have had such a positive experience. Read Less

We chose this cruise because we love cruising. We find this way of travelling very relaxing and at the same time interesting. You can visit many cities and have a general idea of all the places the ship stop. The ship has all you need to have a fantastic vacation time. We never have to wait for a table to eat. The restaurants, all of them are amazing. The chef Ivan, from Chile took really good care of us. He showed as the kitchen and we were surprised how everything was being prepare for each meal in all of the restaurants. The cabin was very comfortable, as well as the bed and pillows, but the best part in the cabin was the bathroom. Really big for a ship bath with warm floor. They have service twice a day to keep the cabin always tidy and clean. We love the entertainment, the 4 young vocalists were exceptional, same as the pianists and the 2 girls who played stringed instruments. We only were sad because the ship couldn't stop in Poland port due to weather conditions. The excursions were very interesting same as the guides, specially Helen in Saint Petersburg. We did some included excursions and some prepaid ones. We already booked a future trip to Egypt in a Viking river for 2021. We recommend the pre and post cruise extensions, both great options, we enjoyed them a lot. We value very much; the quality of service Viking has. Although we did many other cruises with other companies, this last one was overall the best ever. Thanks Viking crew and everyone on the ship for a great experience and a phenomenal vacation. This was a thrilling cruise! I have always wanted to visit Scandinavia. The three destinations in Norway were varied and interesting. In Scavanger we visited the Nature Centre and not only experienced incredible exhibits but were treated to a panoramic tour of the north which I found thrilling to watch. Bergen was a wonderful way to end the cruise and when there we experienced plus 30C sunny weather! The highlight for me was the Pulpit Rock Cruise, in Eidfjiord Norway. I loved experiencing the fiords from the top of the boat! We loved visiting the varied destinations taking in St. Petersburg, Russia, Berlin Germany, Estonia, Finland and Denmark. Our tour guides were very knowledgeable and pleasant. I learned so much about the history of these historic destinations. Stockholm is a beautiful city. Visiting there was a wonderful way to begin the cruise. We were blessed for the most part with fabulous weather which made our excursions, especially the walking tours, very pleasant. While on the ship we were able to meet many of our fellow passengers and enjoyed socializing with them. The entertainment on the ship was fabulous too! For example, the four young people who performed for example, the Abba Medley were outstanding as was our talented cruise director, the pianist, guitarist, and string duo and Viking Band and singers. The atmosphere on the ship was so pleasant that when sea days occurred, it was a pleasure just to stay on the ship. Guest services was extremely helpful, not to mention friendly. We felt we could go there for any concern. The Viking Sky is a well designed ship and I particularly appreciate the fa that it is a smaller ship than some ocean liners who carry thousands of passengers. In summary, the Itinerary was terrific and the luxury of the ship, friendliness of the crew made this the most memorable of my cruises thus far. I would highly recommend this cruise to family and friends. Read Less

The Viking Homelands cruise was selceted based upon the itinerary and especially the end point of the cruise-Stockholm. This cruise was perfect perfect in all respects and everything went like clock work. Embarkation was quick and most efficient. The ship was immaculate in all respects.- minimalist in design and very Scandinavian decor. Ample space on this vessel for a place to seek out a quite place to enjoy the cruise. Sure nice NOT to have children, casinos and bingos. As for the food-plenty of choices and the 3 speciality restaurants. Really enjoyed The Chef's Table with their speciality themed menus. As for the food served on board-we were very astounded with the selections, and quality of the food. Far beyond our expections. Staff always made sure everyone was very pleased. Granted the entertainment on board was not your broadway show productions, however, Viking has very talented musicians on staff and they provided very enjoyable programs. Shore excursions always went off without issues. Viking provides excursions that will appeal to almost everyone and we were not disappointed. All in all, this was a most famous cruise and would sail with Viking Ocean again. The only question is which cruise to select. Read Less

Desire to visit the Northern Europe countries. We have visited many parts of the world but never the Northern Europe area. Being older the cruise was an excellent way to travel. Do not have to constantly pack and repack your belonging as you move from site to site. The excursions at each of the ports gave you the opportunity to see many different sites. The local guides were very good and gave you all kinds of local information. The service on the ship was outstanding. Variation of food was very good and the multiple restaurants gave you the opportunity to choose what you wanted to eat. Only problem encountered was the airplane return trip. United Airlines had a 5 hour delay at the Amsterdam airport switch that was handled extremely poorly. It will be a long time before I ever choose to fly with United Airlines. We had always wanted to see the Winter and Summer palaces in Saint Petersburg and we love Scandinavia. It was the perfect vacation. Our cabin was an upgrade and was better than most 5 star hotels. There were only 2 excursions we did not enjoy. At Helsinki we took the Porvoo and Malmgard Castle, quite a lot of driving and not a great deal to see. The castle was a large manor house!! At Eidfjord Norway, the Flam Railway was a great disappointment. It was vert difficult to see the views. The waterfalls were beautiful but a very long way to travel to see them. We enjoyed the Chef's table, wonderful food and service. Mamsens was delightful. Service in the main dining room was rather slow on occasions, we even gave up waiting for dessert on one occasion!! The cafeteria was beautifully furnished, plenty of room and good food. The departure from Stockholm was very enjoyable. The staff were attentive and always willing to help. Service in the Explorers Lounge was excellent, and so were the cocktails. Read Less

We have only been on a few cruises. We selected Viking based on friend's recommendation, industry reputation and the itinerary was just what we were looking forward. The Viking SKY did not disappoint. Everything was spotless clean, food was excellent, service 10 stars, shipmates were fun and engaging, wonderful ports and excursions, fun entertainment and plenty of beautiful public spaces to enjoy. We never felt like there were 900 people on board. Embarkation was seamless. We got on board at 11am. The restaurant was open for lunch and we were in our cabin before promised time. Port disembarkation for shore excursions were very well organized. Depending on excursion they had you meet at different locations. So all went smoothly. Pleased that they had some fun onboard surprises. One night dancing by the pool - themed" dancing under the midnight sun". We crossed the arctic circle (briefly) and that night we received certificates signed by captain stating this. There were a few more. Highly recommend and will return to do another Viking voyage. Iceland’s Majestic Landscapes, August 13, 2019, Viking Ocean We chose this ship for chance to see Iceland up close. It made four stops in Iceland with two days in Reykjavik at the beginning. Most cruise lines stop at the capitol for a day as they transit between the US and Europe. This was our first Viking Ocean cruise. If you are tired of the glitz, the constant sales pitches and wandering to find a quiet spot to read, this cruise line is for you. The ship had no casino and only two shops. Decks 1 and 2 which surround the 3 story atrium are open concept with contemporary Scandinavian décor in neutral tones– sofas, easy chairs & coffee tables with low bookcases to make them feel more intimate. Instead of a single room dedicated as the library, books are shelved at one end of Deck 1 with more books in other areas. Bars/snack areas are also spread throughout the open public areas. There were only two sea days. We found that our only choices for spare time were the port talks, lectures (excellent) and evening performance by the four ship’s singers. There are no dance/show productions. Trivia was held only on the sea days. Obviously the sports deck was not used with the cold and cloudy weather although the pool deck with its glass ceiling had wonderful nooks for reading, relaxing and looking at the ocean and also offered grilled food at lunch and sometimes at dinner. We used the buffet and pool grill for lunch each day and dinner varied between the dining room, Manressa’s Italian café and The World Café. The World Café offered one dedicated ethnic cuisine menu with paired wine included which changed every four days. We found that to be as much of a “show” as a dinner and portions were a bit small. The dining room and buffet food was well prepared and presented. It tended to have emphasis at times on Asian/Indian dishes which were interesting to taste made us wish to see a nice clam chowder, something less pretentious, ie. “down home food” by the last days of the cruise. As my husband put it, after traveling over three weeks, we had “hit the wall” as far as eating was concerned. The staff without exception was helpful and cheerful. Ports: Iceland is a small country with a population of less than 400,000. More than half live in Reykjavik. When our ship of 900 visited a port, Viking worked hard to gather good excursions and transportation. We were often delighted to find ourselves in a small group of less than 20. Viking offered one or more free excursions in each port. The majority were not just a short bus tour around the town. Some days we took both an included tour and a paid tour. Reykjavik We were exhausted when we boarded the ship. Many flights from the US are red-eye and our Icelandair business class seats did not recline more than a few degrees. I would recommend coming in a day early to acclimate. The most popular tour the day after boarding is The Golden Circle, an 8 ½ hour tour staring at 7 AM. We saw Iceland’s most famous waterfall,, Gullfoss, a geothermal area, lava fields and more. Isafjordur: A small group tour to Litlibaer, a tiny home from the early 1900s with stone walls and a turf roof. You will see many turf roofs throughout the country. We were served waffles and jam and our guide made butter in a churn. We were also served homemade chocolates at a photo stop and told about the home-grown enterprises to earn money in this sparsely populated country. Akureyki: We chose a private tour through Tripadvisor/Saga Travel to the Lake Mvatn area to see lava formations, bubbling geothermal areas, Godafoss, the “Waterfall of the Gods”, and learn a lot of local lore. We won the grand prize in our guide, Thor, who truly looked like his name. He had grown up in the area, entertained us with stories from his childhood and was also an extra in Game of Thrones. This was hands-down our best excursion. Seydisfjordur: The Wilderness Center is a unique hotel/tourist attraction far off the beaten path. The owner has created a museum of unique walk-through dioramas showing the life of early settlers and local lore plus a bed-and-breakfast hotel with some of the beds in a single room arranged in cubbies along two walls much like ancient Vikings built their homes, plus two outdoor geothermally heated soaking tubs, all of which the owner proudly showed us. We were served waffles and jam and given taste of lamb smoked on the premises. Thorshavn, Faroe Islands: The 22 small islands which comprise the Faroe Islands stand midway between Iceland and Norway. We visited a turf church, the remains of a 10th century Viking home, and saw fish ladders for salmon while driving through the scenic countryside. Geiranger, Norway: Easily the most scenic stop on the trip, the tiny narrow fjord ends at a tiny town where we chose to take a free tour up a road with 11 switchbacks to a viewpoint looking over the town to the mountains and reverse course and go up the other way to a viewpoint looking down over the town and fjord. This was nothing more than viewpoints and we ended a hotel for a “rest break” which was far too long with nothing to do. Alesund, Norway: Sunnmore Open Air Museum is a collection of homes, barns and other buildings from the past two centuries. Most are open so you can visit inside and the guide gave commentary as we walked along. The buildings are set on rolling land with gravel paths so this may not be suitable for anyone with difficulty walking. Flam, Norway: The small town of Flam set at the end of a fjord hosts up to six cruise ships a day. We were lucky to find only one other. The #1 tour is a 12-mile ride on the Flam railroad up the hillside and through the mountains with waterfalls in abundance. There is a 10 minute stop at a waterfall where the mythical witch appears singing her siren song. At the midway point, there is an hour stop to enjoy waffles and coffee in the hotel and spend a little time enjoying the view back down the valley before catching the next train back down. Viking reserves seats for its passengers. Check out the1-minute zip line ride from the viewpoint halfway down the valley to a farm you can barely see in the distance if a seat on the train back down is too tame! Bergen, Norway: Bergen is the 2nd largest town in Norway and iconic for its gathering of quaint historic merchant homes/warehouses from the days when the town was a trading powerhouse in the Baltic region. Our tour included visiting an old merchant building, a town tour and a funicular ride up Mt. Floien to enjoy the views, a gift shop, a child’s playground, some goats which keep the vegetation trimmed, and restaurant. It was possible to then wander the old wharf and Fish Market on our own afterward since the ship could be seen from the wharf and gauge if it was within a distance you could walk. Read Less

Our granddaughter choose Iceland. This was her graduation trip. We were surprised at how much we enjoyed it. Not the cruise itself but the locations; Norway, Faroe Islands and Iceland. Incredibly beautiful! Interesting history. The cruise was awesome. This was our 2nd Viking cruise. The first being a river cruise. The Grand European cruise. Both are world class. Viking is upscale luxury. Not for young families, as there is a age limit. The ships are smaller with only 900 passengers, so it makes the cruise so much enjoyable. The staff are the best! Very friendly and accommodating. Whatever you need. The tours, both included and optional, give you whatever your looking for at each port. History, adventures, sightseeing, shopping or culinary. Really we can't say enough about how happy we are with Viking. They make cruising easy. They take care of everything. We will be taking another cruise, there are so many awesome places to see . The nightly entertainment was top-notch. We enjoyed each of the daily tours in Denmark, Germany, Sweden, and Norway. All of the tours were expertly managed. We enjoyed each one of the ports of call. My mom booked this cruise with friends and I was lucky enough to join them! I have been on many cruises with Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Carnival and Costa but Viking blows them all out of the water. Definitely an older crowd, no kids or casino but the food, service and amenities were so far beyond anything I have ever experienced! The itinerary of Majestic Fjords and Vibrant Cities was also fantastic. I would definitely do the cruise itinerary and ship again. Take the tour of the ship at the beginning - learned a lot about what was available on the ship and lots of hidden gems. Reservations for the specialty restaurants were easily made and the Chef's Table was amazing! They put our group of 8 in the private dining room a couple times and that was wonderful. Also, don't miss the waffle at Mamsen's in the Viking Lounge with brown cheese, sour cream and fruit for breakfast. The tea in the Wintergarden was great but too close to dinner for all the food that we had!!! We did a couple of the optional excursions (biking and food/fjord tours) and they were also fantastic. The group excursions were never bigger than 30 people and very manageable. Read Less

Hotels were well selected, with very nice rooms, centrally located in walking distance to many cultural activities. All the staff were SO hospitable, from servers, housekeeping staff, security, to musicians and bartenders. It was a totally wonderful trip from start to finish. Our land excursions were handled VERY efficiently, and gave us an excellent sense of where we were visiting. We chose this ocean cruise because of the itinerary and our past Viking River Cruise (Amsterdam to Budapest). This cruise was one of the very best travel experiences we have ever had (we have been on some very nice trips). Cruising for twenty two wonderful days with an incredible friendly and helpful crew along with good food and the best entertainment we have had in a very long time. We appreciated the concern for the health and safety of all on board. Everywhere on the ship was always super clean, I never saw a thing that was soiled or out of place. The organization of all the excursions was superb, we always knew where to be and at what time to be there. We never saw a crew member that did not smile and greet us when passing or wherever. What an amazing and beautiful voyage we had, it was very sad feeling when it had to end. However we are going to continue this excellent way of travel, we have booked another journey with Viking for 2021. A great big hug and a thank you to the crew of the Viking Sky. Read Less

The same can be said for the buses. The food on the ship was wonderful and without limitation. The coffee was not particularly to my taste but I guess you can’t have everything . I indulged on the steaks of which I truly enjoyed. On final departure we were surprised and delighted by members of the Viking staff walking us through the check in at the Copenhagen airport turning what is sometimes a confusing experience into a pleasant one. Our cruise was Russia and the Baltic, we thoroughly enjoyed every port especially our two and a half days in St Petersburg, another highlight was Visby on the island of Gotland (very quaint). This was the first Viking Cruise we have taken, previously having sailed with Disney. The whole ship exudes quality both from the quality of furnishings, food and crew. The transfer arrangements went smoothly and without hitch. We had a starboard cabin on deck 5 (5053) which had everything we needed and exceeded the quality of Disney product. The self service restaurant was where we had breakfast and lunch and food and choice were excellent. Evenings we are in The Restaurant which was waiter service and had the most wonderful server in Sophia - a credit to Viking, in our view. The food was well presented and delicious. One night we ate in Manfredis which was Italian specialty and delicious. We didn’t visit the Chefs Table but did lunch a couple of times in Madsens, the Scandinavian restaurant which was excellent. My only criticism was that some guests seemed to get to eat in Manfredis regularly and there should be limitations so that everyone can benefit! I have to say that the entertainment team were awesome led by Cruise Director Bevin, no mean singer in his own right either. His assistant Brian Rodriguez had an amazing voice and the vocalists Dan, Becky, Maddy and Damien performed shows each night that would not have disgraced the West End and backed by a terrific band. The crew from Capt Olav downwards were friendly and could not do enough for us. Special mention for Olex our barman as well. I would like to comment on the excellent experience we had with my wife at Viking Sky. Before leaving, we had apprehensions regarding entertainment on board and the age of the passengers. We are not young (58 and 46 years old) but we knew that the average age was higher. The truth is that although the average age is higher, it was very nice for us to be on the boat without children or teenagers, without a casino, without photographers, without sellers of trinkets. the shows were of quality, the conferences very interesting, the first level gym, the extraordinary spa, the fantastic living rooms to read, the swimming pools with sun loungers available, the exceptional food both in the buffet and in the restaurant, always, and I insist, always with tables available for dinner, breakfast and dinners. We have previously taken two Uniworld River Cruises. We chose Uniworld because Viking salespeople were too aggressive for our tastes. Uniworld offers no Ocean cruises so, with some trepidation, we signed on for the Viking Baltic Sea cruise. The fact that Viking advertises so extensively, and that the ship accommodates so many more people than a river boat, led us to expect a less pleasant experience. All our fears proved totally groundless. The entire experience, from arrival to departure was marvelous. We were met at the airport by numerous Viking representatives who helped us navigate recovery of luggage and getting on the bus to the ship. Our room (Penthouse Veranda) was beautiful, spacious and comfortable. Service on board the ship was spectacularly good. There seemed to be as many employees, all willing to help, as there were passengers. Every public space was immaculately clean, and our room was kept this way by the housekeeping staff. The ship was so large that at no time did we feel crowded. There were many restaurants, all very good, and we never had difficulty finding a table for two, which we preferred. On several occasions we ordered breakfast via room service. It was excellent and delivered precisely when ordered. The ship offered many opportunities to attend educational lectures, and evening entertainment was well attuned to an older audience (e,g,, Beatles retrospective, Broadway show tunes). The performers were first-rate. Additionally, there were cocktail hour musicians who were delightful. One of the most impressive things about the cruise was the level of organization. Every evening we were provided with a schedule for the next day. All departures for excursions were so well executed that one had a sense of being on a much smaller cruise. All but one of the excursions were of high quality, and the staff clearly anticipated the incompetence of the one poor local guide by sending an additional person to encourage him to tell us about sights. Sadly, that didn't help. We would venture a guess that this local guide won't be used again. All the other local guides were quite good. Finally, the departure of 900 people from the ship at the end of the cruise was conducted masterfully. Bottom line: The cruise was far better than we had anticipated. The time spent on the ship was even more enjoyable than on the smaller river cruises we have taken. We are already planning a second Viking ocean cruise. Read Less

My wife and I are both senior and retired and this was our first and only cruise so far. We certainly chose the best, everything about our Viking cruise was top notch. Embarkation was a breeze, very efficient with our bags delivered to our cabin in a very timely manner while we enjoyed welcome drinks served by really friendly crew members. Our cabin was very comfortable and well equipped. Room service and laundry facilities were excellent. We enjoyed some absolutely fabulous meals; the Cuisine in the several restaurants was par excellence. We enjoyed the daily musical entertainment in the atrium, sometimes provided by a delightful young lady on piano and at other times a female duet on Cello and violin. Onboard entertainment was really well presented; we particularly enjoyed the Beatles and Abba evenings. The onshore excursions were really well chosen and organised just perfectly. Our onshore guides were extremely knowledgeable, really friendly and most had a great sense of humour. The Hermitage was a stand out highlight for us, but then again the whole St Petersburg experience was just excellent. Thank you Viking! Read Less

From the moment we stepped on board, we knew we had made the correct choice. The staff could not have been more pleasant, professional and accommodating. Every staff member always had a smile and genuinely wanted to make our trip special. I am lactose intolerant and was nervous. Everyone from the chef on down did everything to accommodate my food needs. When I made a request, they make it possible. I had a minor medical problem and was amazed at the quality and extensive equipment/facility that was on board. The lectures and entertainment were fabulous. We enjoyed every excursion even though some that we chose were more physically challenging than we were use to. Each excursion was well organized and extremely interesting. The room and all the common areas are beautiful and well worth the price. I can't recommend this cruise line enough. We hope to make more trips with Viking Ocean. Read Less

I wanted to see the fiords and several countries. This cruise allowed us to do that and see the incredible fiords. The ship was laid out beautifully and was immaculate. The food was excellent with great variety at each venue. The service and staff were also excellent and everyone was courteous as well, especially our room attendants. With respect to our room, it was bright and looked new. I was especially impressed with the organization from the staff meeting us at the airport to taking us back at the end of our trip. You could not get lost, The included excursions and those that we paid for were all wonderful! Each one we went on was organized and had very professional guides. My wife and I have memories for a lifetime. we have highly recommended this cruise line to our friends , family and co-workers! I will travel on Viking again. Read Less
