We chose Viking after talking with friends who have done Mediterranean cruises and recommended a smaller ship experience, as well as doing some research on the best cruise line rankings. We were not disappointed!! The ship is amazing and comfortable. It is so easy to relax, or find things to do. What really makes the Viking experience stand out is the incredible staff! Everyone, and do mean everyone, is very friendly and helpful. Many of the waiters and bartenders knew our names after the first day and we had some amazing conversations with them about their home cities, working on the ship, ports of call, and our families. Amazing people! And the food was 5-Star! The chefs are incredible! This was our first time to Europe so we wanted to experience as much as we could in as many places as possible. That was why we chose to go on a ship, and chose this particular cruise with 10 ports of call. It was the trip of a lifetime! We did several of the included tours which gave a very good introduction to the cities, and then went off on our own exploration. Viking makes it very easy to get to and from the ship so you can explore as much as you like. We also upgraded our excursions in several ports and they were well worth it! Rome, Pompei, and Venice were some of the ones I would recommend looking into. The guides were all local and very good. The other great thing was that Viking had onboard historians that gave talks before each port of call. They were very entertaining and informative. It was also great to get the daily newsletter in our room with information on the next days activities on board and ashore, specific on excursions and times, and any specific details that we needed to be aware of in the next port. The overall experience exceeded my expectations on nearly every level! We are already looking into our next Viking cruise and have recommended them to all of our friends. It truly was the trip of a lifetime! Read Less

We chose Viking from reading many reviews from this and other cruise lines. The ship, cabin, dining, service, crew's attitude, and excursions were all exceptional. We were pleasantly surprised with the size and comfort of our cabin. The ship is beautiful and clean and we could always find a quiet place to sit by ourselves and have a glass of wine. We applaud the hand sanitizers and sinks, soap, and towels outside all restaurants. The food and service were excellent in all the restaurants. We went on the galley tour and marvel at the efficiency and cleanliness of the kitchens. We also went on the bridge tour and were amazed to see how the ship is sailed. The excursions were very organized and ran with great precision. The entire staff and crew were always friendly and pleasant, with a smile on their face. We enjoyed sailing on a "smaller" ship and we are now planning a river cruise and possibly another small ship sea cruise with Viking. Read Less

Went to see the Northern Lights and experience Norway where we had never visited. Due to weather we never saw the Northern Lights...The Norway Coast was spectacular and worth the experience. If I had to do the cruise over again I would like to go during the spring or summer - Norway is beautiful but hard to appreciate when it is cold and icy during the winter. That said, it was interesting during the winter and something we will never forget. The Viking Sky was a lovely ship and the attendants were great. We have no complaints with the service provided during the cruise and our room was excellent in design and the attendants were friendly and took care of our needs beyond expectations. Some of the onboard entertainment was excellent...some interesting...some a bit lacking. Some is designed for the academic which was a bit beyond our interest. Overall the only change we would consider is the time frame - winter in the far north was worthy of the experience but during a warmer time of year may have provided better shore experiences. We enjoyed a prior Viking river cruise and wanted to experience a Viking oceans cruise and see parts of the Mediterranian. We're so pleased with Viking we're already looking to book another Viking cruise in 2019. The staff on the ship was first class and catered to our desires. With Viking you get so much more with your booking than you get with other cruise lines. The extra amenities you get without being charged extra is a big plus. For example getting a free bottle of water as you leave the ship for the shore excursion and receiving a damp washcloth to clean up when you return to the ship was a very nice feature. The cabin was a good size and the bathroom was much larger than other cruise lines. One nice feature was the heated bathroom floor in the morning. Having free bottles of water and snacks in the cabin was an added benefit. Read Less

We decided we wanted to see some of Europe while we were still mobile. We are in our late 60's! We heard from several friends who had great experiences on Viking River Cruises, but also we wanted an ocean cruise. Viking's Iconic Western Mediterranean's itinerary was compatible with our interests and dates we were available. The start date also was the date of our friends wedding anniversary, so they joined us as well to celebrate their special event. We decided to book the Penthouse Veranda and splurge at bit. Our friends chose the Deluxe Veranda! We were so glad we chose the Penthouse Veranda as it was a much larger stateroom with plenty of storage for our luggage. It also had a stocked liquor mini frig with beer, wine, and hard liquor as well as candies. The frig was stocked frequently! Scotch Whiskey was stocked, but I prefer bourbon. The room stewards were unable to accommodate a request for bourbon, but that was perhaps one of my only disappointments. We were spoiled though by the stateroom stewards. Two are assigned to each room and your room was tidied up every time we stepped out. Every aspect of our trip was a delight, from the aspect of no children to the food quality and service. Excursions we chose perfect, both free and purchased! Viking has their act together! Only recommendation would be fewer ports and longer stays in each port. Barcelona, our last port, was our favorite and we left with a desire to revisit that wonderful city! Awesome entertainment and Viking is so organized with all activities as well and embarkation and disembarking. Oh,as a side note, a friend who recommended Viking received a $200 cruise credit and we received one when we also recommended Viking to a friend! If we were to do over, we would add more time before and after at those ports! Read Less

We chose this particular cruise for the itinerary. What a great lineup of destinations. We also stayed an extra couple of days before the cruise in Rome and a couple of days after the cruise in Barcelona, all arranged thru Viking. Booking the trip was so easy - one call to Viking and the cruise, flights and hotels were all arranged by them. The ride was very smooth: you would not think you were on a ship at all. The cabin was large and very comfortable. The restaurants offered a great variety of cuisines and our meals were always delicious. All of the staff were warm, personable and helpful. My wife and I enjoyed every aspect of the trip immensely. Except for one thing; and Viking cannot be held responsible for that. It rained eleven of the thirteen days of our trip, which put a damper on some of our touring. That aside, Viking gets a ten of ten. Read Less

What started out to be a Viking River Cruise for us morphed into a Viking Ocean Cruise after a series of changes, flip-flops, and renditions. My wife wanted to visit Europe with her 81 year old mother, and neither had ever been. I had been to most of the ports we hit, but on Navy ships as a young Sailor, so let's just say I didn't have the good taste or cultural awareness then that I have now. My MIL's gentleman friend was also well-travelled in Europe, but mostly on short-term business trips. So we all hammered this idea out between us until what we decided on was the Mediterranean Odyssey on April 3, leaving from Venice. I have to say in a nutshell that Viking Cruise Lines and this cruise in particular exceeded almost all of our expectations greatly, and we feel like we have had the trip and vacation of a lifetime. Not perfect, but pretty darned good. The two things I didn't care for were the front man at Manfredi's, who was too pompous and self-important for my liking, and that Viking Air hooked us up with the flight schedule from hell on the way back to the US from Barcelona. No way should we have had a 5.5 hour layover in Paris. My fault for believing what the agent on the phone said, instead of having all the flight schedules in front of me to begin with. Other that those two things, no complaints. Special kudos to JoJo, Ruby, our cabin steward (whose name slips my mind), and all the other stellar crew members we came in contact with. They were top-notch employees, and made our stay aboard superb. The ship was immaculately clean at all times, in good working order, and quiet and comfortable. Understated elegance! The food was good, the shows were good, and the spa was OUTSTANDING. We managed to vegetate down there several times. Loved hanging out on the pool deck and in the Explorer's Lounge too. We took advantage of both the free and paid excursions, and used my previous port knowledge to tailor what tours were best for us. Favorite excursions were Amalfi, Florence (David/Uffizzi), Nice/Eze, and the Flamenco show in Barcelona. Least favorite was Corfu, but it would have been Toulon if I didn't know better already and had gone on that free port excursion. We opted for Cassis instead, which I was able to return to after 38 years. Still as awesome as in 1979! So if you are reading this, do yourself a favor and try a Viking Ocean Cruise aboard the Sky. Looks expensive on paper, but worth it with all the extras that are included. Read Less

We took the Med Odessey cruise for the many interesting port visits. We had seen the commercials for Viking and it seemed like a nice adventure. The reality surpassed the expectations. The crew was wonderful, the ship comfortable and elegent. The port excursions were well planned and the guides knowledgeable and friendly. As expected the food was excellent with the service both personal and quick. We loved the cruise so much that we signed up for a Viking river cruise before our sea cruise was over. Viking is the way to go. Our cabin steward was exceptional. After the first day he knew our names and we would talk each day about the events of the day. He always had a smile on his face even though his days were long. The ship is smaller than most sea liners but with only 930 passengers it was very easy to find a secluded nook if you so desired. THe port briefs before each port visit were very instructional. We will be doing another Viking sea cruise in the future after we determine another desireable itinerary. Read Less

Transportation was wonderful from airport to terminal transportation. Ports of call were all fabulous. Croatia, Santorini and Monrovia were my favorites. Guides were excellent and well educated. Lots of history in this part of the world and I learned a lot that I didn't know. Beautiful part of the world. Medieval buildings, ancient cities, easy access with transportation to and from sites. Loved the radios and ear plugs to hear the guide with. It let me wander and still know where my group was. Met great people with both staff and guests. Wonderful food and entertainment. Beautiful accomodation with balcony. Ship was spotless and really new. Loved having the washer and dryer aboard ship too! I have already booked another Viking trip. This time a river cruise. It will be hard to meet these highest of expectations set with this trip. Don't think I can cruise any other company ever again. Do yourself a delightful favor and travel with Viking. You will be happy you did. Read Less

What a great experience. In the past, after several days, I was ready to get back home, not this time. I wanted this to continue forever. The ship was so immaculate. The crew was so professional and friendly. They seemed to go out of there way to strike up conversation, whether it was to ask me how things were going, to knowing where I was from. They had two of my favorite areas to unwind after the excursions. The favorite was the Explorers lounge. Lots of windows, relaxing with a cocktail and occasionally listening to the piano. My second was the piano area on the first floor. Second choice, only because it was more crowded.. The music, whether it be the piano or violinist, always put you into a relaxing mood with your cocktail. The food was great and service was spectacular. When we got back a little late from an excursion, they always kept the dining area open to accommodate us. A great deal of attention was paid to our room by the staff. The room which was surprisingly large was always clean and neat. The excursions were very organized. We had one hiccup, where the wind was so strong, that excursions had to be delayed and moved. They somehow got everything organized so quickly, that were able to see everything, just a bit late. Very professional. I do wish that we could have spent more time in Florence. It deserved more time. The thing that stands out the most was the fact that the ship was smaller than most cruise ships. To me this removed the "Zoo Like" atmosphere that you feel on the other cruise ships. I believe that Viking has hit a home run with smaller cruise ships. Read Less

I was invited by my friend that had just lost her husband and had this trip already planned and booked. I was very impressed with the ship and not being as crowded as other ocean cruise lines. All of the staff are very friendly and go out of their way to accommodate all of our needs. I was also very impressed on the day we were to dock in Monte Carlo and were unable to because of the high winds. The ship had to anchor in the bay of Villefranche and we had to tender to shore. That was fine and the crew did a great job with this. Also I was very impressed that my shore excursion was not canceled ( Nice, Eze & Monte Carlo), for there was much planning and rearranging. Thank you to all for this was one of my favorite excursions. This was my first cruise with Viking and we booked another cruise to Portugal's River of Gold, October, 2018. Looking forward to the next cruise and many more. Read Less

We were looking for a Viking cruise to celebrate my upcoming 60th birthday. This cruise hit several places where my daughter had worked as an archaeologist and so we picked it. From the minute we contacted Viking customer service, we were treated as pampered guests. Art Rivera was our cruise consultant and he made us feel like royalty. The ship itself was divine and I never felt so pampered in all my life. It seemed like before we even knew we needed or wanted something, it would appear. All the staff was helpful, cheerful, and accommodating. The entertainment was stellar & varied. There was no lack of things to do. If you wanted activity, you could have it. If you wanted peace, quiet, & solitude, you could have that too. My only suggestion would be to add another excursion option to each port. Having a recorded guide & map for more independent exploration of the port would be a nice change from buses. While the bus trips were well organized, entertaining, and enlightening, sometimes it's nice to spend more time on the ground in a port. From beginning to end, this was an amazing trip. Read Less
