We wanted to see the Tulips and Windmills - now and then. The rooms were too small. We had to take turns getting ready in the morning as well as other occasions. There also was not enough room to put our suitcases under the bed. One went in the closet and the other was in the room close to the bathroom. All other aspects of the cruise were great. I have recommended Viking cruises to many friends. We stayed the extra 3 days at the end of the cruise. Transportation was arranged to transport us to our hotel. We are traveling with Viking in 2020 to Waterways of the Tsars. All dining was great. There was always a great selection of food for lunch and dinner. If you wanted something that wasn't on the menu staff was always accommodating. The ports and shore excursions were always great and appropriate for the region Read Less

We knew people who had gone on the same trip. We were considering a Viking river trip and this one was what we wanted. We were able to see the Ann Frank house in Amsterdam, which is something we had really wanted to do. We were glad to have that extra time at the beginning of our trip to explore Amsterdam a bit before embarking on our cruise. The ship, Saadi, was great. Our cabin, while not big, was comfortable and clean, and the maid who took care of our room did an excellent job every day! The food on board was wonderful— never any reason to be hungry! It seemed that all the waiters/waitresses would do anything to accommodate us. We were pleased that there was evening entertainment provided and we especially enjoyed the trivia contests! And the ports and shore excursions were all well planned. Our tour director, Stein, was great— he was very organized and kept everything, including all of us, on time. We enjoyed all of the ports and shore excursions, especially Salzburg (Sound of Music) and Vienna. We hadn’t read the optional tour description carefully enough and were surprised when we had a Viennese waltz lesson included in our tour! Even with the low water levels, having to change ships, and not having a full day in Budapest, we really enjoyed everything about the trip. We definitely would go on another Viking river trip. We chose to go on our trip several days early, to both enjoy the Amsterdam area and get acclimated to the time change before starting our river cruise. We were picked up at the airport and taken to our nice hotel, where we spent time with Viking hosts to better plan our time there. They were extremely helpful, we were able to see many key spots in and around the city, and the local transportation was easy to use. We signed up for several tours while there which we enjoyed; Amsterdam is a beautiful city and we would highly recommend spending time there. We easily found our ship "Skadia" near our hotel and we were pleased to see the hotel staff had transferred our luggage to our ship's room by the time we checked in that afternoon. We had several hours to relax and unpack before our informative welcome meeting and first dinner, which was helpful to my wife who had never been on a cruise before. This river cruise with Viking was just excellent and better than advertised in many ways. The trip itinerary was well planned out, the additional shore excursion options were a good value in both time and money spent, the entire crew was professional, friendly and caring. The cabins had everything that we needed and the entire ship was always clean. We enjoyed the daily special touches that Viking added, like special treats after some daily excursions. The cruise director and her guides/drivers did an excellent job with the shore excursions and gave plenty of information to us so that we could get the most out of what we would see each day. We especially liked the narratives on several days cruising through scenic Unesco areas. The hotel manager and especially our cabin staff did a wonderful job taking care of us in a respectful and helpful way. The chef and his crew had interesting menu choices along the trip and helped my wife with her special dietary requirements. The food was very good, the desserts were special, and the friendly and efficient wait staff called us by name by the second day, impressive! We enjoyed sitting at different tables during the day meeting new people as well. The Captain and ship crew provided us with a safe and smooth experience. It was a great way to travel across Europe combining certain sights we would not have seen otherwise, meeting interesting people from across the globe, learning historical facts and visiting spectacular museums, and not having to plan each day's activities. We enjoyed all aspects of the trip and look forward to doing it again in another part of the world. Read Less

We wanted to try a river cruise and found it was so much more relaxing than ocean cruises. The service was wonderful as was the food. The small ship made it more likely to meet new people. The tours were well led and the guides were easy to hear and understand. Our cabin with a French balcony was comfortable but with very little space to store clothes. Cabins with a regular balcony had almost twice as much storage space. It was fun going through 68 locks rising in elevation and then going back down. It was interesting to see the top deck being collapsed to pass under low bridges and then restored to full height. Also it was nice to have beer and different wine included with each of the the meals. The free WiFi was also appreciated. Overall it was a wonderful cruise and we are looking forward to another river cruise soon. Read Less

This Grand European river cruise has been on my wish list for a long time. We started in Budapest on Saturday, May 6, the Skadi is a lovely ship, our cabin was nice, it would have been nice to have two chairs instead of one chair and a stool, but otherwise was comfortable. The dining was wonderful, I needed special foods because of allergies and Ivan was wonderful assisting me. The ship's entertainment was fun and the service outstanding. I was surprised at the many ships at each port we visited. Sometimes several ships had to raft and walk through to get ashore, once we had to climb up to the top deck and cross over the top deck of the adjacent ship, then descend down to get off the ship. The included shore excursions were great, those guides were outstanding and the choices of ports was good. I was disappointed in the paid excursion to the Lipizzaner horses, we did not realize we would not get to see them perform or exercise, instead we had a tour of the stables. For the price of euro 99, for "Behind the Scenes at the Lipizzans" it was not what I expected. The Ehrenbreitstein Fortress tour was a disappointment too. I could have taken the Cable Car and walked through the Fortress for 8 euros instead of euro 49 because the so called guide who did a ridiculous skit as we walked through the outside to the Bier Garden where he left us to go tour on our own. Had it not been for these two excursions this would have been a 5 star cruise. There is so much history about WWII to be seen on this tour, I had read about the shoes memorial left along the Danube River in Budapest. The Skadi was anchored nearby. Seeing it saddened me to think this was done by the Nazi's. I loved seeing the castles and homes along the rivers. Cruising down the rivers and going through the locks was wonderful, it was exciting to watch the ship rise up and cross the Continental Divide then descend through the Main to the Rhine River. Passing the Lorelai and hearing the story was wonderful. Seeing the Windmills at Kinderdijk was interesting, there were too many people inside the mill to be able tours upstairs. Read Less

The ship, food, tours, and overall customer service was awesome! Grand European gave us the opportunity to see 4 countries (Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Hungary) as well as the Rhine, Main, and the Danube Rivers! This was a marvelous itinerary! The scenery was beautiful. The tours were outstanding! The shore excursions gave us the opportunity to learn about the culture at each city we visited. The food on the ship was tailored to the local area so again we were introduced to local cuisine. There was a variety of entertainment on the Viking Skadi. A highlight for me was the glass blower artist. He provided a demonstration for us. We also had some opera singers and dancers. I can't say enough about the service that was provided on the ship. They made us feel like family and catered to our every need. I had such a great time I plan to travel to China on Viking in the Summer of 2017! Read Less

Helpful staff, great food, fun excursions--definitely met our expectations! We were pleased with all aspects of the cruise. For example, we had concerns about visiting Brussels after the recent terrorist attack, so an alternative excursion was offered. Our trip to the windmills was challenging due to the heavy rain, but we managed to climb one anyhow. I accidentally lost a small bag while climbing the windmill, and the staff went back to retrieve it for me. One lady slipped and fell on her face and got a bloody nose, and she was given the best possible medical attention. Also, the waiters in the dining hall were amazing. They remembered each morning that we liked warm milk for our coffee, and they brought it to us without our even having to request it! The food was delicious, and I liked the fact that traditional foods from the countires we visited were offered. The evening entertainment (singing quartets, wooden shoe carver, etc.) were terrific. The pianist was incredible. He took requests, and there didn't seem to be a song that he didn't know, and he never seemed to tire of playing our favorite song each night--"May I Have This Dance for the Rest of Your Life?"
