We chose to travel on the Viking Sea (10 day cruise) from San Juan, Puerto Rico to San Juan, Puerto Rico, because we liked the look of the itinerary, and the fact that it has been voted the top cruise line for the last 4 years. We were amazed by the ship on embarking. It is a stunning, beautiful ship decorated in a Scandinavian style. Our first reaction was that this was going to be a wonderful cruise. Unfortunately, it all went down hill from there. For an expensive 6* cruise line the cabins are tight and drawer space is at a premium. When comparing the cabins to Azamara for example they do not seem any bigger, although the bathrooms are a significant improvement. I am guessing that they have improved the bathroom size at the expense of draw space in the cabin. We like to eat on deck under the stars. This facility was not available on board the Viking Sea, unless one ate at the back of the ship adjoining the buffet restaurant. However, in this case there is no waiter service. Guests had to take food from the buffet. Service around the pool deck was almost non existent until I complained. It was then significantly improved. In addition the service outside at the back of the ship was also poor. Sometimes it was impossible to find a waiter, but at other times it was better. Most of the sun loungers around the pool deck have no mattresses, and the towels are very small. They cover the upright back of the lounger, and possibly a third of the horizontal part of the seat. They are grossly uncomfortable and I am sure contributed to a back problem I currently have. The policy on the ship seems to be to close the roof on the sun deck at the merest hint of rain. The temperatures in the Caribbean hover at around 30 c and closing the roof for no very good reason serves to make the conditions on deck almost intolerable. I can only assume that they are scared of getting the deck wet. In the main the food offering is very good. However, one of the specialist restaurants (Chef’s Table - Asian Fusion), we found very challenging. There is no choice - it is a fixed menu. Although it is changed every three days. We ate there twice, and on both occasions found that there were courses we could not eat. The entertainment was meagre. There were no outside entertainers. There were just 3 production shows, the cruise director doing an Elvis impersonation, and the Assistant cruise director doing a show (she was superb). Other entertainment was the Super Bowl (not very interesting to non- Americans), and a televised Oscar ceremony. Turandot was shown two days running, and 2 other films. Really, it was all rather poor. Around the ship was a classical string duo, and a classical pianist. Most of the time the music took on a funereal quality. The result was the lounges were very often empty or near empty. In fact we often said the ship felt a little like a ghost ship. There was also a guitarist. On him I can make no comment as I never heard him play. Apart from enrichment lectures, and trivia quizzes held rather bizarrely at 20.15, no other on board activities were offered. There is no card room or organised or disorganised bridge. We asked at guest relations if they could provide us with some playing cards. All they were able to come up with was an old pack held together with a rubber band, and a non matching set of picture cards. We were also told that we would have to sign for these - mind boggling. The crew were very friendly and smiling. There were simply not sufficient. Viking runs their ship with approx 2 guests to 1 crew member. Other lines with similar reputations have between 1.5 and 1.7 crew per guest. This probably is the main cause for the service difficulties we encountered. We have travelled on Crystal, Silversea, Seabourn, Azamara, and Oceania. All comparable products. Unfortunately, Viking does not meet the standards of its competitors, and feels like it is being run on the cheap. Read Less

We chose the West Indian Explorer Cruise with Viking because it stopped at nine beautiful ports, only one of which we had seen before. Also, our previous Viking Rhine River Cruise was so great, we wanted to try Viking's Ocean cruises. We especially liked the fact all cabins have balconies, the ship is smaller (930 passengers), has no gambling, smoking or anyone under the age of 18 - makes for a very peaceful vacation. Viking provides an included on-shore excursion at each port included in the cruise price and those excursions do a much better job than other cruise lines of providing history, economic and political information. A wide variety of added cost excursions allow for a broader choice of things to do if the included excursion isn't to your taste. OK, the food was also wonderful and the entertainment was too - just bring ear plugs if you have tinnitus or sensitive hearing! Our only disappointments were the lack of dance floor space and the music tended to frenetic "club" dancing rather than "ballroom". The "Viking APP" only partly worked on my Android cell phone and the cruise hosts couldn't get it to work either so we weren't able to track our schedule and other events as well as we should have been able to. Most cruise ships have friendly staff, but Viking's staff hit a new high - not a frown the whole trip! In short - we would do this again in a heart-beat! PS - this questionnaire would not allow me to add a photo - just saying.... Read Less

I loved this Viking experience. Smaller ship, no photos, no casino and I'm sorry, but no children. It was what we needed (we're Seniors). The "free to everyone Spa" is amazing! The hot room, the ice bucket of water, the cold room, the big spa, the hot tub.... at first I thought I couldn't do it, but it was absolutely wonderful. The crew/staff was amazing beyond any expectations we had. Our dining experience could not have been better. Absolutely fabulous food - what a surprise from Princess and Carnival! Our waiter, Singh Untung Surya, Station 12, Table #151 made this cruise, OVER THE TOP. He was FABULOUS - the six of us that traveled together cannot say enough about what an amazing dining experience we had, with many, many accolades and thanks to Singh. He needs to be promoted or get a raise or something. Everyone that enjoyed the pleasure of being on one of his tables, all agreed, he is one very amazing person and a true asset to the Viking team. He made a huge difference to all of us! Way to go Singh....thank you for all you efforts to make this cruise extremely memorable for all of us! Read Less

We love the cuisine offered in terms of variety and quality. We love being cared for as if we were part of the family. Because the ships are so new, everything about our cabin was first class, new and surprisingly spacious. We felt that we could have lived there for more than the 11 days we traveled in total comfort. The Living Room became a second hangout place for us, with a place to get snacks, a drink or hear live music while we read and enjoyed the ambiance. Dancing was available in the lounge, and the band was great. Nightly variations with solo band members on an instrument, or the classical duo, were our style. Frankly, the shore excursions may have been great, but we went on this cruise to experience the ship ... so we didn't focus on those opportunities. That was our choice ... we had been to some of the islands before, so that was not our priority. Because we were met at the airport and delivered directly to the ship, we had a smooth embarkation experience. The disembarkation experience was ... different. We were bussed to a nearby hotel, and waited there for hours (as guests of Viking with sandwiches, cookies, beverages) to be bussed to the airport. As it turned out, that was a good thing because there was not a lot of amenities at the San Juan airport. However, several busses at a time, and waiting to board and load, were not ideal for my difficulty with walking and standing for a long time. It was, all considered, probably as good as it could be. The hotel (the San Juan Hilton) wasn't all I expected a Hilton to be, but that is not the fault of Viking. It is near the port, and their meeting rooms were clean and serviceable. We would go again in a heartbeat. We would not take our friends who think that the ideal ship is the 6,000 passenger big boat because they want a balcony overlooking the INSIDE of the ship, and 3 or 4 Broadway shows to choose from every night. So this was just what we wanted to experience in every way, but it is not for everyone. Read Less

We thought all parts of the cruise were excellent. Even with the rough Caribbean waters, earthquake in San Juan and missing two ports because of the rough seas and wind it was a terrific trip! We have two additional scheduled with Viking and this being our test cruise with them convinced us we made a good decision to book more. We were on the Viking Sea with an Explorer Suite. The staff was very attentive, professional and provided great service to all. The dining was great but my only complaint would be that we missed the 90 day window to reserve one of the two specialty restaurants. We wanted to go to Manfredis three times but could not get in. The Chefs Table was good but you had a limited choice of food options. Although the food was very good i wish they would put a steakhouse or similar to provide more specialty options. The main restaurant was terrific and provided some of the other options for beef but again it was limited. The excursions Viking provided were walking tours but were very good and the guides were all very professional. The chosen ports were well thought out and gave us a good look at the southern Caribbean islands. We will not hesitate to recommend and use Viking well into the future. There is really a benefit only having 950 people with over 500 staff compared to 4000-6000 with 1500 staff! Read Less

We have sailed Viking’s river cruises in Europe and were impressed with the quality of the food and the attention to guest services. We chose this cruise because of the timing, over the Holidays, and that the destination was one we had not experienced before. We were delighted to find the same level of customer service and quality of food on the ocean cruise. The cabin stewards were gracious and friendly. The food was delicious in whatever venue and the wait staff attentive to our every need. The decor of the ship was really nice. Very comfortable chairs and lounges and many quite spots to sit and enjoy a good read. The Library and the Explorer’s Lounge are especially nice. Bar service is very attentive. The entertainment was superb. We especially enjoyed Pablo, a Venezuelan guitarists, who is very talented. There’s also a pianist and a string duet who play in the atrium every evening. There are also very interesting presentations related to the history and culture of the ports to be visited. Read Less

This was our third cruise with Viking, one river cruise, one Adriatic ocean cruise. The ship staff from the valet to the captain were outstanding. Always friendly & helpful. The ship was great, too. Easy to navigate with lots of amenities. The size of ship is perfect for the ports we visited during the cruise. The number of passengers is excellent without kids & needless entertainment. If you want casinos or shows, this is not your cruise line. The entertainment was outstanding. Excellent musicians & classy, comforting music. The food is consistently good, but after several days, the selection was getting limited. We ate at The Restaurant most of the meals, but also at Manfredi's where the food was outstanding. Bar area in Atrium on first deck is always fun. Now the excursions. We have been to about half of the islands on the cruise so we did not select excursions for Tortola, St Kitts, St Martin/Sin Maarten or Barbados. For our second day in Puerto Rico we did the Ell Yunque Rainforest which was a good excursion. Guide was very good. We did not leave the boat at Tortula. At St Kitts, we taxied to the Carambola Beach Club instead of a cruise excursion. Relaxing time. In Dominica, we did the Freshwater Lake & Hot Pools excursion. Our guide was very good, but the lake & hot tubs were pretty disappointing. In Barbados, we got a taxi tour with another couple. It was one of our favorite onshore day having visited The Crane Resort at Crane Beach, a cross-island tour & a visit to the Sandy Lane high-end resort & golf course. Over the top in luxury! In St Lucia, we did a cruise excursion on a catamaran & lunch at The Ladera Resort which was over the top, too. Beautiful view of the Piton peaks & a great lunch. This was by far the best Viking excursions for the cruise. In Antiqua, we did the Amazing Antiqua cruise excursion. Our guide was very knowledgeable & friendly, but the tour was lots of boring driving. The Shirley Heights & Nelson's Shipyard were interesting. We have done St Martin so we stayed on the ship. Our last day was in St Thomas & we took a taxi to Megens Bay beach which was very pretty & relaxing. Overall, a very enjoyable cruise. We will do more Viking cruise in the future. Read Less

We have previously taken two Viking river cruises in Europe and chose this cruise because it would not involve a long round-trip flight to Europe before beginning our cruise. Also, we wanted to try one of Viking's ocean ships to see how similar it is to the river experience. Too many "included" shore excursions all looked alike. You pile onto a small van/bus, run up and down mountains and then get stuck in traffic either going or returning to the ship. And, of course, not all those vans are properly air conditioned. To top it all off, the destinations all started to look alike every day. You are on a Caribbean island, they take you to the top of a mountain or along a docking area, and you walk around, drink some rum punch, take pictures and get back on the bus. If you don't specifically ask, they will schedule them all very early in the morning, and on vacation I don't want to have to get up early!! The entertainment falls into the same quandary: One group of young singers did two major shows, and that was it, along with the cruise director and his assistant doing the singing on other nights. The entertainment needs more variety. How about a magician? Or a comedian? SOMETHING besides millennials trying to pretend they know the music of the 60s and 70s. Finally, Viking needs to work on attracting a more diverse group of passengers. EVERYONE was 65 and older. Just not fun. Read Less

We wanted to go on a special vacation and after some research we decided on a Viking ocean cruise (Sea, December 2019). We had done the Grand European river cruise with them a few years ago and loved it. At the end of this trip we were still impressed with the Viking business model. “Small” ship cruising has many advantages over the larger ships and I hope to cover some of them in the following. In our departing airport, a ticket agent saw we were with Viking and took it upon herself to walk us over to the self-help kiosk and check us in. When we landed, we were greeted by a Viking agent and escorted to the luggage area, then to our bus and taken to the ship. Getting on the ship was the easiest ever experienced. The process was very simple and didn't take any time at all. It was a simple matter of showing your passport, checking that against their records and off we went. Needless to say, the embarkation process was fabulous. Getting off at the end was just as easy. Because this was a special event, we splurged and got a junior penthouse suite. What a room! We've never experienced something like this on a cruise ship. There was more than enough room to spread out and the veranda was large enough to fit 6 easily. The décor was modern with clean lines and great fabrics. The bed was comfortable, there were two TV's, a mini bar kept stuff cold, closet space was more than ample for a 10 night cruise, and there was more storage than we could use. Luggage fit under the bed. There was a safe. The bathroom was larger than the guest bath in our home. One thing we noticed through the cruise is that the mirrors didn’t fog after showering, a small but welcome perk. The room was all you could ask for. Before leaving the ship on the last day we looked inside a penthouse veranda room and deluxe veranda room. Both are roomy and would suffice but the layout of the deluxe, with the closet entrance where it is next to one side of the bed, is kind of screwy. It’s not a deal breaker by any means but be aware that you have to work around it. Either of these rooms would be more than acceptable for a vacation. The room stewards kept everything clean and met all of our requests. In fact, the entire staff is trained well by Viking and it shows. They are very courteous and professional in their demeanor. On our first night in the restaurant we requested a waiter recommended to us by friends who had done this cruise a month before us. Singh was an absolute joy to meet. Even though there is no assigned seating we were able to request to be seated in his area each night and we were not disappointed. For example, due to a medical condition I cannot eat much and must eat slowly. Singh understood this and would put off ordering courses until I was ready. The food always came out correctly cooked and there was no evidence it sat under a heat lamp. I don’t believe this can be done on a large ship. The combination of a great waiter and a small ship made this possible and added to the experience. We found the food on this cruise to be very good to excellent. Food on our last three ocean cruises, on larger ships, was OK. Viking is way ahead in this category. Their menu is varied, food is fresh, and there is always something for everybody from vegans to paleos. The wine list is well thought out with good vintages and a good selection. I saw only one wine that was wildly overpriced. The free wines served at lunch or dinner were pretty good and changed daily. Neither of us drinks much so we did not get the drink upgrade and cannot comment on that. We did order bottles of wine on some nights and found them reasonably priced. We went to Manfredi’s two nights and Chef’s table one night. All of the meals were very good; a step up from the regular restaurant. The ribeye at Manfredi’s was excellent. Have the waffles at Mansen’s at least one morning. It’s at the front of the ship in a nice quiet area on deck 7. The sit-down restaurants are closed for lunch so most people head to the buffet. It is not a buffet found on large ships. On Viking, hot foods are hot and salad ingredients are fresh. Once again, all people can find something they like to eat and it doesn’t disappoint. As an aside, don’t miss the gelato bar for dessert. We had a burger at the pool bar one day and it was very good. I also liked the onion rings. I’m convinced larger ships require their staff to cover more ground and be responsible for too much, whether it’s cleaning, food preparation, or providing service. This leads to mistakes. I didn’t see this on our Viking ship. Things were as they were supposed to be and as I remember from cruises 20 years ago. The ship design was pleasing to the eye and full of little nooks where you could pick up a book, curl up and relax. Most were very quiet and undisturbed. I never felt crowded in the public spaces, even in the buffet. The carpeting and fabrics used throughout the ship added to the relaxation feel. Look for Odin’s crows (research the tale) as they are hidden everywhere. There is no casino, no art sales, and no children. The lack of these help add to the idea that this is comfort cruising for those who want to be away from hustle and bustle for a while. Internet service was free and you could log-on most times. It’s wasn’t ultra-fast but a person could still stay connected and browse. My wife enjoyed the spa area and had three treatments. She felt the staff were well trained and did good work. The provided shore excursions were good enough for an overview of where you were but for further exploring you need to take a tour that costs extra. This is such a personal matter I won’t take much time here except to say you should do research prior to sailing and decide what interests you so you can select a tour that will meet your needs. The tours fill up fast so be prepared to sign up for them when registration opens. We found the cost of the optional tours to be in line with what was offered. Entertainment is in the form of lectures, various music soloists or groups, and the revue shows. The revues are not as “big stage” as you will find on larger ships but they filled the need for an after dinner sit-down. As I’ve always said, if you want to go to a Broadway show, go to Broadway. I found the lectures engaging with good information and the guitar, violin and piano music provided well played background music and entertainment. I’m not a pop music lover but the revue shows were entertaining and liked by the attendees. There were no sea days on this cruise so we were busy exploring off ship each day. We were able to schedule our excursions so that we had time in the morning to sit on the veranda, have coffee, and then go to the restaurant for a nice breakfast. This is another reason to schedule shore excursions as early before your cruise as you can. A little bit of planning will afford you the opportunity to laze around instead of being rushed. A side note is that you can meet with any of the included tours and get on “standby.” We did this once and were allowed to join the group. If an optional tour is booked you can get on a standby list and guest services will let you know the night before if you can get on. I like small ships. We tendered once. The food, ship comfort, and uncrowded silence were standouts. Service was excellent. If you are looking for an adult cruise consider Viking. I believe the cost versus value is good and comparable to the cruise lines that charge you for everything. We are already figuring out our next trip with Viking. Read Less

The Viking embarkation and disembarkation process were fast, efficient, no hassle, no long lines. From the luggage area to and from the airport, Viking representatives were always at hand. Such a smooth and relaxing process! Everywhere at the ship, cabin, spa, dining areas, evidently portrayed ELEGANCE and LUXURY! Our penthouse veranda cabin was always kept clean and the refrigerator stacked with water, sodas and snacks. Our room stewards were always on their toes! So impressed with their efficiency. The Atrium Bar and Explorer’s Lounge were our favorite hangouts due to their excellent service! We were constantly at the Atrium Bar to order drinks and stay for an hour or two talking to other guests, and to amazing Carlos and his wonderful staff. The classical music was much appreciated. Pablo, the incredible guitarist, was our favorite entertainer. The tea time was a great addition to a relaxing afternoon. Dressy casual was required at all dining venues and at the theater except at the World Cafe. We appreciated the complimentary excursions. The sites were well planned and the guides were so knowledgeable. Viking’s high standards far exceeded our expectations! The best service we ever encountered in a cruise line. We were so pleased with our first Viking cruise that we already booked our next one for August 2020. Read Less

Even though I the ice-cream was exceptional, my favorite dessert was suchi, Freshly made every evening. Travelling at Christmas time made all the entertainment special. My favorite was the all the piano, classical duo, and guitar music in the Living Room (Atrium). We used the spa on a number of occasions and found it relaxing and never crowded. There was no charge to use the pools, hot tubs, steambaths or snow room. Our favourite pool was the infinity pool at the back of the ship. Viking's West Indies Explorer was just the kind of cruise we were looking for. We like to spend more than one day in a particular area, which is hard to do on many cruises. The Lower Antilles brings a series of Caribbean destinations together in close proximity so we never completely left the islands, and we were able to visit a different one every day. Perfect! Viking always offer an included excursion in every port. These always seem to focus on local geography, scenic points, and local culture. These are often not extensive in duration, so Viking arranges some much more immersive tours starting with some reasonably priced excursions into natural areas, historic landmarks sometimes recognized as UNESCO World Heritage site, or local industry or artists. For a bit extra we stepped up to a few more indulgent tours involving some great sailing on a catamaran, or special local cuisine. Every cabin has a veranda, so we always had a quiet place with a fresh breeze to relax for an hour or just for fifteen minutes. The standard cabins aren't terribly large, but we never felt like we were cramped - the bath was arranged so effectively that even the shower had plenty of room. So much better than some of our cruises on other lines. The ship, of course, was beautiful - there's something very simple and clean about Scandinavian design. It's pretty much our definition of elegant. Viking's open buffet dining is about the best of any line we've tried, and the main restaurant always offers the opportunity to meet new people or have a quiet dinner as a couple. Every passenger has the opportunity to book one or more meals in a smaller specialized restaurant. The Italian dishes in Mancuso's are among the best we've had anywhere, and we've found some pretty wonderful places in Rome and New York. Somehow we overlooked booking before our trip but a young lady named Grace, on the restaurant staff, persistently watched for an opening to get us in and called to tell us. The service of the Viking staff is consistently excellent, and you can see that they're always happy to make you feel welcome. This was our third Viking cruise, the first was along the rivers of central Europe, and the second in the western Mediterranean. Not a hint of disappointment with any of them. When I finally retire, we'll certainly take a few more. Read Less

We chose this cruise for the itinerary and island destinations. This was our first cruise so we only had online research to help us. Once we were onboard and speaking with other guests -most of which were Viking Explorers which means repeat guests- we knew how lucky we were to have chosen this line. No up-sell. No one in your face. Attentive service with amazing food. Every port included a free excursion which helped to educate the guests about the country, local population and tour some of the sights. The cabins all have balconies. Repeat, all. They are lovely with enough room to feel at home. I admit, we had sticker shock when we saw the price compared to the discounted competition that floods the internet and our emails. Again, we learned what the Viking experience provided versus the unexpected pay as you go options. We enjoyed the adults only atmosphere with luxury spa facilities of which a large part were free to use as you wish. Specific treatments etc were pay as you go. We have taken 3 Viking River Cruises and thoroughly enjoyed each one so we wanted to try a Viking Ocean Cruise! We chose December because cruising in the Caribbean would offer us sun and warmth. It was an amazing experience from start to finish. The embarkation was was very efficient as was the disembarkation. No stress! The ship is beautiful and very passenger friendly. There are no inside cabins since all passenger cabins have a balcony. The ship was very comfortable and provided passengers with many different places to read, chat or play a game. There were many and varied excursion offerings. We did most of the included excursions and they were very well done. Tour guides were friendly and knowledgeable. We enjoyed many of the different entertainment offerings! The entertainers were very talented. There were also speakers who provided interesting and informative lectures. Our meals were delicious with several available options. One of our favorites was the American Barbecue on the Aquavit Terrace. You must enjoy a dish or cone of gelato at least once a day! The crew was professional, friendly and very helpful. They would go out of their way to accommodate the wants and needs of the passengers. This was the most relaxing ocean cruise that we have ever taken. We highly recommend Viking Ocean Cruises. You will have the freedom to do as much or as little as you desire. Relax and Enjoy! Our cabin was well appointed. The dining was superb. All the common areas were very comfortable and easy to get to. Tours were well put together. Having a lot of choices on tours made it easy to pick out the ones we wanted to take. Having personal on the docks showing us where we needed to be was outstanding. All the tours we took had guides that were very knowledgeable and courteous. The vans or buses were clean and comfortable. The entertainment was outstanding. We plan to take Viking on more cruises in the future. In fact we will be taking a Viking river cruise (Grand European) this coming fall. Thanks to all at Viking making this cruise memorable. Chose this cruise not only for islands visited but also because of my age (66) so wanted to relax and enjoy the beauty of the islands and be spoiled by the ship and the crew ! Embarkation was seamless. Shore excursions were well organized and always on time. On ship the staff were courteous and helpful. Ship was especially clean. Food excellent. I’m not much on late nights but did stay out a night or two. Entertainment was very good. I only wish I had taken advantage of the “extra” shore excursions. Some looked wonderful and I had friends who said they were exceptional. Room service !! Excellent. So nice to enjoy coffee early every morning on the private outside deck !!! Pools were not crowded and there were always lounge chairs available. Quiet areas to mingle with friends or read-or visit the bar and get to know other passengers. The Spa !!! Oh my !! Wonderful massage after a busy day ! Read Less

Have been on over 30 cruises and Viking is now our choice. The ship is wonderful but the crew is what makes the trip. How they can work so hard and be so "up" all the time is something to behold. Really brings up the guest's experience. Entertainment. The Viking Trio which we loved on past Viking cruises was cut down to a duo. Just not nearly as good. Why is Viking still putting ads in current magazines with pictures of the "Viking Trio" if they are no more? Included shore tours: The walking tour of San Juan was very good, all the rest on the different islands were not worth much. . Antigua was the worst....Long bus ride and we happened to be in the back seat with the sun beating down and no AC. Paid shore tours: Barbados, Harrison's Cave was great. Dominica, Snorkel was fun. St. Thomas, snorkel tour was very worth it and enjoyable, (but the "shipwreck" was just a sunk boat. Airport transfer and embarkation was perfect. Disembarkation and airport transfer was good...except...loading up the bus we were told to put our carry ons under the bus as there was only a small coat area above your seat on the bus. I told the man loading the luggage we had breakables and to please put our carryon on top of the pile. He did. Upon arrival at the airport the driver got off and closed the door. It was then announced by the escort that the luggage would be unloaded and taken to be x-rayed BEFORE we could get off the bus. We quickly told the escort the we wanted our carryon NOW as it had breakables and a laptop. Two other passengers also said they had a laptop in their carryon and also wanted their bag. The escort could not open the bus door and started banging on the door and windshield to attract the attention of the driver, who finally opened the door. We got off the bus and saw our carryon on the bottom of a luggage cart with piles of big suitcases on top of it. Unacceptable! We should have been told to keep our carry ons with us when loading the bus. Read Less

I've wanted to take a Viking River cruise for years but friends of ours had returned from a Viking sea cruise and raved about it. They provided their Viking contact and BAM we booked a sea cruise. We cruised the West Indies for about 11 days. We did take the provided tours in most of the ports but did also take a couple of other additional tours. The raft trip in Dominica was great! Viking is very organized with agents always there to guide you. Only once was there any confusion, when departing a train tour there was confusion as to whether Tour 4 was to get on Bus 4. They were not. Overall, taking a tour was very organized form the moment your tour group assembled to its end. We always felt safe. The food in the main evening dining room and the special dining rooms was fantastic!!!! My only complaint/concern was in the buffet dining room. Although there was plenty of delicious food from which to choose, I felt that the food, on several occasions, was not hot enough. Barely room temperature. I'm sure it would not have passed the 140 degree or higher temperature test recommended by the FDA. Since returning, we have highly recommended Viking Cruise Lines to our friends. Now that we have experienced the Viking way, we have booked that River cruise I have always wanted to take and convinced another couple to join us. We have cruised on 3 other cruise lines but Viking stands above all the rest. For the sea cruise, having only 903 passengers aboard was nice. You really didn't have to fight the crowds, as we had on other larger ships. I can't imagine some of those huge ships. Go Viking!! Read Less

We chose this cruise because it stopped at all the islands we were interested in. My husband will only cruise with Viking, and this cruise did not disappoint us. The crew, all treat you like royalty. Something I have not experienced on other cruise lines. The cabin was kept very clean and supplied with whatever we requested every day. The food, you just can't say enough about the food and the presentation! Exceptional. We took a tour of the galley and that was extremely interesting to see, well worth the time. We like Viking as there are no kids allowed under 18, makes it so much more pleasant for us. The excursions we took were great, some better than others. Embarkation and Disembarkation is a breeze with Viking. So much so, we forgot a bag at the terminal, and the crew were amazing and brought the bag to us at the airport. I can't rave enough about Viking!!! We have 2 more cruises already booked!!! Read Less

I've done 2 Viking river cruises and was pleased. Ocean cruise was a disappointment. Billing mistakes on their part through days after disembarkment. I take 3 to 4 cruises a years and have never had so many accounting problems that they continually tried to blame me for before finally fixing their mistakes.. Entertainment was virtually nonexistent or what little there was happened during dinnertime. Will not do another Viking cruise. Very little daytime activities if you didn't do an excursion. Included excursions consisted of a side around an island. Not enough cultural experiences. Cabin was new and clean but storage left a lot to be desired for two women sharing a cabin. Cabin steward was one of the best I've experienced. Viking claims to be upscale but I don't agree with that assessment at all. Other premium lines beat them by a mile. Dining was average except for the Italian rwstaurant. Read Less

We had done three river cruises with Viking and throughly enjoyed them. This was our first ocean cruise with Viking and the experience was excellent (food, cultural enrichment, customer service, excursions). They always treat you special. They know you name and your likes and dislikes. Our Veranda Suite was great. It was spacious and very modern. The rooms were well appointed and having the mini bar included was great. The restaurants were excellent and had a good variety of food. The shore excursions were excellent, especially the whale watching in Dominica. We also had an included tour each day that gave us a good overview of each island. We feel that Viking provides the best cruises both ocean and river. They focus on cruises for adults and have appropriate activities. We highly recommend Viking cruises due to the overall experience. We will be planning more cruises with Viking in the future. I had already cruised once before, 30 years ago and loved it. My husband had never cruised and wanted to "give it a try". He was over the moon and thoroghly enjoyed it and so did I. Absolutely amazing! Beautiful ship with so much space everywhere. Wonderful food and so many restaurants to choose from. Great excursions, although a couple of them not quite what we had expected and not really for us. But you learn as you live. Cruising the Caribbean, excursions on the water including swimming and snorkeling are definitely to prefer to any land excursions; mainly due to the very humid and hot weather we had. We met many very nice people and have now made friends for life. Very much enjoyed the musical shows in the evenings, very good quality and so entertaining. If I can make one remark: the air-condioning inside the ship was too much and we found it very cold everywhere. Not ideal when it's very hot outside. A shawl or jacket was definitely needed in the evening in the restaurants, well as far as I was concerned. We got a cabin upgrade just before leaving so had a most wonderful cabin with so much space and beautiful balcony (we had an Explorer Suite at the front of the ship). The housekeeping staff were absolutely wonderful and so friendly and helpful. In fact all staff on the ship were great! We enjoyed this cruise so much we have already booked another one, with Viking! We chose this cruise to see a different island every day which appealed to us rather than spending several days at sea without visiting another port as most other cruise lines offer. The ship size is perfect. It was never crowded, even at meal time. Unlike an experience with another cruise line, the ship is quiet and we were able to sleep whenever we desired. The variety of dining options was great. We ate at the buffet often, but also enjoyed the formal dining experience two nights. In the mornings, we enjoyed room service before our daily excursions. Every evening we attended one of the entertainment options: piano, guitar, stage performances, or violin. We enjoyed the variety and the quality of the performances. We are planning a Viking riverboat cruise later this year, and another ocean cruise following that. We recommend Viking as a cruise line of choice for adults. Read Less
