We chose the cruise because of the variety of excellent ports of call. It was our first Viking cruise, and we were very impressed by the beauty of the ship, the attention to detail, the variety of food choices and restaurants, and caring staff. Every port was different, and every one worth visiting. We were impressed by the quality of excursions offered, whether included or extra. Each was led by a knowledgeable tour leader, and both informative and enjoyable. The lectures were all excellent, and the speakers knowledgeable about the varied subjects. We enjoyed The Explorer’s Lounge...a perfect place to relax before dinner or enjoy the sunset. Our room was comfortable and very well maintained by our excellent and caring cabin steward.. we never wanted for anything. We enjoyed the restaurants, the variety of food, and the ability to decide where and when we would have our meals. We chose to extend our vacation..both before and after the cruise. Both hotels we stayed in were very good, as were the Viking representatives in the hotel lobby. Well done, Viking! Read Less

This trip was highly recommended by family and friends who had already been on this trip. It was everything they said it would be and more! The overall experience was world class exceptional! The visit to 8 countries and 11 ports was amazing. The tours were done by educated, experienced, well- spoken tour guides who provided a wealth of information. They gave us a glimpse of life for each country visited. There was a lot of fast paced walking so this trip is not for those with ambulatory issues. We loved every port and country we went to. The Viking ship, Sea, was the perfect size to get in and out of all the ports and waterways. It was beautiful and had much to offer. Our room was spacious, newly updated, great amenities and very comfortable. The food was world class. The variety of restaurant choices was perfect and each venue had great choices. The staff were very personable, funny, provided for every need. Allen and Dickie, our cabin stewards were exceptional at their job. They were very personable, respected our routine and privacy and provided what we needed. The entire shipboard staff were exceptional. I highly recommend using Viking Air to arrange flights. Perfect flight arrangements. Everything was well coordinated and organized from Viking. The trip was very costly but worth it! Read Less

My wife and I have cruised many times in the past. we usually cruise with some friends who decided that we all should cruise the Baltic for our annual cruise in 2019. They chose Viking Ocean cruises, due in no small part to the excellent reputation of which they had read and the fact that what could be better than to take a Scandinavian ship to cruise the Baltic. At the outset, we were shocked to find that the entire cruise needed to be paid at least one year before the cruise. That has never been our experience in sailing with multiple lines and future patrons need to be aware of this requirement. The ship is beautiful. The public rooms are wonderful especially the Explorer Lounge. Our cabin was quite roomy and the bathrooms excellent. special kudos for a lovely shower without having to step over a tub.I found the heated floors in the bathroom to be a nice touch. The spa area is spectacular and if going to a spa with virtually everything-hot tub, small therapy pool, sauna and ice room is your thing, this is your ship The company touts its multiple channels of communication available to those who are scheduled, but that is primarily limited to receiving one way announcements from them, done well, but not to any dialogue or getting personal support for questions which arise and may not be answered in their stock announcements.Poor communication seems to be common on these cruises. For example, special meals opportunities, lobster tail and steak, special buffets, at the grill were never announced well and one learned to look for these each day by dropping by the grill itself or asking of the crew in a restaurant or bar. The ships plan is good but when the special meals take place in the grill area there is inadequate seating for the number of cruisers wishing to partake in the meal. The seating in the cinema is wholly inadequate for the number of passengers. Quite a few performances occurred with many passengers standing in the back to observe the show. The back two side areas were totally inadequate both for seeing the show and hearing it.The need to get to the venue 30 minutes before shows began was difficult for those of us who tended to to eat dinner at about 7 to 7:30. I was quite disappointed to discover that we did not receive services comparable to what we had received ion either Oceania or Azamara in spite of the fact that the per night per person cost to sail with Viking was considerably more than either of the other two. My concern with the cabin service is that when I wished ice, I had to go to housekeeping, when I wished lime I had to go to room service and when I wished to change my complimentary liquor and the amount of tonic I needed to speak to the drink steward. This in my view is rather poor considering the price of the cruise and the plaudits from other cruisers. Viking offers one free shore excursion at each port. The walking tours we took, 4, were excellent, but those in a bus were not worth the time spent at all. I was quite disappointed in the meals in the Restaurant ,in the Chef's special restaurant both times and at Manfredi both times. To be fair, one night the prime rib served at the restaurant was amongst the best I have ever had. The waffle at the Explorer Lounge was exceptional. On at least 4 occasions the cookies offered with the buffet were stale. the wines with meals were acceptable if unremarkable. One could upgrade wine selection and liquor for an extra daily per person charge. The speakers/lectures seemed excellent, for those we could make, but we missed the largest number as they were scheduled during dinner hour or just prior to dinner hour. Getting on, on the day of sailing from Bergen, and off the ship in Stockholm, with our luggage, were superbly handled even though we left the ship at 6 am to make our plane. Read Less

The service on the ship was of the highest order. The cabin was very nice and had lots of room for for a two week cruise. While fancy dining is not our highest priority we did find the other choices for meals were more than adequate for our tastes. We really enjoyed the magician, he was top notch. The other entertainment was of professional quality. There were more than enough activities to choose from. You could not do everything available. We enjoyed the variety of excursions available and were able to get on all the ones we wanted except one, but the alternate excursion was very nice. I am amazed at the level of service of all the employees on the ship and the booking office. Our only complaint was we paid the extra $50 to call the plane reservation service to negotiate the plane flight from Phoenix to Bergen. They were not very accommodating and wound up with plane delays and changing flight plans 3 times during our flight because we were delayed taking off from Phoenix due to bad weather in Newark, our first connection. Yes, the delay was weather caused but our wish was to fly direct to London first not Newark. The delay caused us to be without our luggage for 6 days. The guest service did preform a miracle to retrieve the bags when we had lost the luggage tags. We are not big on cruises, but for people who like this sort of thing I would definitely recommend Viking for their over all great service from start to finish. Read Less

Before this cruise, we have taken Viking River Cruises. Did no know what to expect on this, our first ocean cruise with Viking. We were more than pleased. . The ship was immaculate, from the cabins to the public restrooms. The size of the ship was perfect, including number of guests. Lots of open space to move around, comfortable lounges, private sitting areas, and open, airy general areas. Our cabin was perfect, with every cabin having a veranda, plenty of closet room, comfortable beds, and the best part a specious bathroom with HEATED FLOORS. Dining was, as one would expect, excellent. With more than 5 restaurants, ranging from gourmet to buffets, to sandwich bars, it was difficult to choose. Each location offered the very best in epicurean delights. Further, it was a pleasant surprise to be addressed by name in the main dining room. The drinks, some of which were included in the price of the cruise, were top shelf. The staff could not have been more professional, courteous, or accommodating. Since we have never been to Norway or Scotland, we found the visited ports a wonderful experience, the shore excursions educating, and the guides superb. We upgraded to longer and more involved shore excursions, which we found to be well worth the time and money, all but one. When that excursion was brought to the attention of the ship, by us and others, they immediately gave us credit on that tour. Totally unexpected and appreciated. We also appreciated being able to prepay gratuities. All toll, our cruise was one which we are still talking about, and enjoyed so much that we have booked another Viking Ocean Cruise for the summer of 2020. From start to finish, Viking looked after our every needs. Being senior citizens, we especially appreciate the detailed arrangements made by Viking, from meeting us at the airport, to settling us in our cabin, to the entire disembarking experience. Viking is our ship and company of choice, of which we recommend to our friends. Read Less

I would not hesitate to recommend this cruise to anyone. The ship was beautiful and clean, and the staff and crew were helpful, fun, and entertaining. Service was top notch. Our cabin was always clean and pleasant, and the views outside the sliding glass doors was phenomenal. The size of the ship was just right: under 1000 guests. We've been on the mega-sized cruise ships, but much more enjoyed the size of this one. With few exceptions, the dining and food were amazingly good. We had only 2 disappointments in the two weeks we were on the ship: 1) On lobster night, the lobster tail was overcooked and mushy. On the other hand, we did have lobster a second time and it was very good. 2) We were disappointed in the Italian dining room. Our group was neither impressed with the dining room nor the food. It was a bit more ornate than the main dining room, but the food was just not what we had come to expect on the ship. On the other hand, the open buffet dining food was as good as special dining food on other ships. The nightly entertainment was varied and the quality was as good or better than we've experienced on much bigger cruise ships. The bottom line is that we LOVED this cruise and would not hesitate to take it again. The stops/excursions showed us the true beauty of Norway, the Shetlands, and the Orkneys. All were absolutely beautiful. Read Less

We had heard from friends and read reviews about Viking Ocean cruises. I wanted to go to Norway and visit my cousins I had never met after the cruise ended in Bergen. I also love the history of Russia so we thought the Viking Homelands cruise was the best for us. And all came true for us. We loved our Explorer Suite. We did have our cabin steward remove a couple of chairs. He was amazing and made our trip exceptional along with many other staff members. Including Omega our favorite bartender, he kept us well medicated! We do like the fact there are no children, no casino, no photos etc. The food was amazing. We have four friends we had told about our trip and how special it was on Viking and now they are going to be sailing with Viking on the Homelands cruise this Spring 2020! We just returned from a Princess 15 day Panama Canal cruise and it confirmed our love of Viking Ocean. We are looking forward to our first Viking River cruise Budapest to Amsterdam Grand European Tour April 8 to April 22 on Viking Lif. This is our 50th Wedding Anniversary trip. Explorer Suite 341. This was my first Viking Cruise, i have been on others but will only go on Viking. I did the Baltic cruise with 4 days in Iceland before and 1 day extra in Sweden at the end. The embarkation and disembarkation went very smoothly. The ship was very easy to get around and someone was always ready to help. All employees were friendly, helpful and willing to talk about there lives and working on Viking cruise ship. The food on the ship was wonderful. My favorite was the Restaurant for dinner. I love good food and I was not disappointed. The wait times were never long, was very organized. We used room service several times, especially when we had an early shore excursion. Food was on time hot and very good. . I went to some of the entertainment and some of the talks about our next port. I liked getting information about the ports. Service was excellent In all areas. I liked all the ports we docked at. I was disappointed that we could not dock in Gdańsk Poland because of bad weather but I understood. We then spent an extra day in Estonia which was one of my favorite countries. St. Petersburg was a revaluation because of the palaces and Hermitage, it’s amazing how well kept up the buildings are. We had a wonderful tour guide. He was so knowledgeable and a wonderful sense of humor. Both places we ate at were very good and so different. All the shore excursions were well organized, very interesting and a great learning experience. I took this trip with a good friend and I will only use Viking when traveling on water. I like the small ships and organization of Viking. You have changed my mind about cruise ships. THANK YOU Read Less

I chose this cruise because I have always had an interest in visiting Norway because of the scenic nature of the country. The scenery is really amazing from the fjords to the mountains of this great country. We saw so much in such a short time period with included and optional tours in 8 different countries. I was amazed at the beauty of Estonia and Russia. Only disappointment was not being able to dock at Gdansk Poland because of the weather conditions. I was particularly interested in Poland because of my husband's German ancestry. Everything about the 'Viking Sea' was top notch. We where spoiled by the service offered .... room service, dining, entertainment, friendly staff and general organization. We liked the size of the ship, the rooms where awesome with the balcony to slip outside and take in the view. I really enjoyed the nightly entertainment, every bit as good as taking in a theatrical production in Toronto for me. Everything was top notch. Of course I would go again & actually have already booked an Alaskan Cruise for 2020 with Viking. Read Less

Our Viking Ocean cruise began in Bergen Norway and ended in Stockholm Sweden. Doris and I have traveled often together but neither of us had been to the countries included in this cruise. One main reason I chose this cruise was the chance to see Rembrandt's "the Return of the Prodigal" at the Hermitage in St. Petersburg Russia. We were originally scheduled for this trip in June of 2018 with a group of 16 others, but Doris fell and broke her arm so it was just the 2 of us traveling together. We had a wonderful time and soon met a lot of wonderful people ! We took the "easier" included tours in most locations and the extra tours that we took were just phenomenal. "A Day in the Life of a Viking" with our tour guide Emma we can highly recommend - we saw and learned so much and she was so interesting....a definite passion for her country, its history and sharing it with us! The "Organ Concert" in Gdansk Poland was beautiful and the walking tour through the city was lovely. I think I would like to go back to Gdansk to explore it more! In Tallinn Estonia was absolutely not to be missed. Our guide Olavi, dressed in a KGB uniform taught and showed us so very much - with some heartbreaking, some warm and some humorous stories about life back then and life now. He raised quite a few looks of concern from the locals when we left our bus for a few minutes to clear up a traffic jam! In St. Petersburg we enjoyed the tours of both Our Saviour and St Isaac's and the canals outing. We did go to the Hermitage (and yes I saw my Rembrandt !) and spent the evening at the Ballet. I still get chills from the adventures of that day. Because we had missed dinner, the cruise director had a lavish snack of assorted sandwiches, cookies and a bottle of wine waiting for us in our room. That was such a welcome treat. Dinners were delicious - oh all the meals were great! I think we had at least one meal in every one of the restaurants (including the 2 specialty restaurants) or in the snack bars. The only complaint - if you can call it that - was the dining menu did not include as many local options as I would have liked. No borscht, or perogies, or beef stroganoff, or wurst mit kraut, etc. like on the Viking River cruises; but we did try all the Nordic fare! Some evenings we sat just the two of us - but conversations were stuck-up with our neighboring tables. We also sat at large tables with 10 or so other folks which ended in exchanged emails. Great time! We had a drink package so we tried many different cocktails and wines in the different lounges. Mamson's / Explorer lounge was a favorite as well as the "living room" . Some of the desserts were not quite up to par. I am a amateur pastry chef - but the Nordic waffles were great - I just got my plates for my waffle iron! And those hazelnut cookies are to die for - would LOVE the recipe ! Relaxing with a double espresso and a waffle or cookie or other treat was a daily event. We did have "tea" also which was delightful! We enjoyed the pool and lounge areas, and the SPA ! How wonderful was my "Swedish deep tissue massage"! Doris had a facial that she loved too. We also tried the whirlpool and snow room! Yes and we used the laundry also as we extended our Europe trip to see family in the Netherlands. We didn't go to the onboard activities / entertainments - they sounded interesting but just wasn't time to do ALL the things offered. We did have dinner and drinks with Stuart Gufstasen, one of the trip speakers. Interesting guy! The on board shopping was fun too! I now have my own Viking rain jacket and we had a grand time purchasing several "remembrances" of this trip. We took over 3000 pictures that are now being sorted and labeled for future viewing; and as I work on them I get this warm feeling, or a broad smile or have a hearty laugh at our adventures! We were again not disappointed with Viking! Our cabin (deluxe veranda) was comfortable and spacious enough for us! Loved the shower, mini fridge and the balcony seating. I cannot think of anything we lacked....just needed to ask if there was something. Viking service is excellent and am grateful for all the work they do - I love being spoiled and there is nothing you can add to that! We are looking forward to our next Viking adventure (Normandy to Paris maybe? or Greece? or I would love to go to Cappadocia / Istanbul ?) It would have been fun to include a picture or 2 but each day was something special and fantastic to remember always! Read Less

We had wanted to visit the Baltics for quite a while and especially wanted to visit Russia. The ports we visited, the service we received on board, the tour guides, everything, on the whole, was all excellent! I recommend this cruise to anyone who enjoys visiting new lands and meeting friendly people. Our only disappointment was not being able to visit the Viking Village in Norway because of the limitsd number of people who are allowed to go. The highlight was visiting St. Peterburge. We took the canal cruise and visited two churches. The Church of the Spillex Blood is a work of art! Absolutely amazing! Another highlight was the Vassa Museum in Stockholm ! Well worth the visit. Even though the weather was a bit cool the first couple of days (while our hometown zweltdrec in oppressive heat) it was great for our excursions! When we asked Albert, our Stewart, about getting us some tea at night he accommodated us but making sure we had a pot of hot water and tea ever evening during the cruise. We should often sit out on the de k of our room, enjoy the sites as we sailed by amazing landscapes and enjoyed our hot tea before bedtime. Felicia, our housekeeper, and Albert were absolutely wonderful! They always welcomed us back with a warm smile and greeting when we returned from our excursions. Our Room was kept immaculately clean. Our bed was turned down every night with the tray of hot water, cups and tea ready for us to enjoyed. Thank you Viking for this trip of a lifetime. So many memories! Read Less

From the first moment on you are always greeted with a smile and greeting. Scandinavia is beyond beautiful. Each country different and the tours were wonderful. Having 2 full days in Russia was perfect to try to really experience it. The talks on board were so interesting and enhanced our trip. One was a specialist in Russian art including Fabrege eggs. The other in history. His talk on WW 2 was fascinating. You never feel crowds on board. Love how you can go to any restaurant without an additional charge, and there is always someone close by to answer questions or help you. Afternoon tea was delightful, ship was beautiful! We chose this cruise as a great way to explore the Baltic region and we certainly achieved that aim....The tours and lectures meant we returned home having seen and learnt so much! From arrival at Stockholm to the departure gate at Bergen we were looked after very thoughtfully. The senior officers were ever present and available to talk to. A small niggle about the buffet was picked up by an attentive Restaurant Manager and dealt with professionally and personally by the Head Chef. The food throughout was excellent,we enjoyed both speciality restaurants and found it easy to make extra bookings once on the ship. Viking Sea is beautifully designed with lots of interesting artwork and understated Scandinavian style. The lectures we either attended or caught up with on the cabin t.v were all relevant and interesting/ thought provoking. There was more entertainment than we expected, we particularly enjoyed the 2 guest shows by Mary Jess and the resident Viking band and singers. The musicians who entertained in many of the public areas were very accomplished. We took several of the included tours, some were better than others but all gave us an introduction to the area which we were able to follow up independently at most destinations, often aided by the complimentary shuttle bus. After reading reviews we opted to use Alla tours in St Petersburg. They were excellent and I have no hesitation in recommending them. We chose not to take a tour in Berlin instead taking the included morning trip to Rostock and then occupying ourselves in Warnemunde (a local seaside town with a long sandy beach and promenade, interesting waterfront and lots of little shops, cafes ) A day well-spent. We were lucky to enjoy good weather throughout which always helps although strong winds in Gdynia meant we were unable to dock that day, an extra day at sea was easily occupied. If you decide to take this cruise I hope you enjoy it as much as we did. Read Less

We have been on 9 river cruises and were not sure about an Ocean cruise but the Viking Homelands Cruise offered an opportunity to visit many new places. There were so many places to relax and enjoy. By the second evening the bartender greeted us by name. We especially enjoyed the Explorers Lounge. The restaurant choices were great-many more options than on a river cruise and the food was excellent. The specialty restaurants offered diversity but the “Restaurant” was excellent and ended up being our favorite for dinner. The World Cafe was great for lunch and breakfast. There was never a line-a table could always be found. Viking does a great job but the shore excursions were the real treat on this cruise. We have been on 9 river cruises, 6 with Viking. Since we were running out of rivers the Baltic Homelands Cruise offered an itinerary that appealed and we had always been happy with our previous cruises with Viking. We were not sure if we would like the differences entailed in Ocean Cruising but were extremely pleased with this trip. The first thing that impressed us was the comfortable feeling one had on the ship. All the public spaces were well done and you never felt uncomfortable or crowded. It was hard to believe there were over 900 people on the ship. Our stateroom was very comfortable and quiet and the staff did an excellent job of attending to our needs. We had easy access to the Explorer’s Lounge and by the second day the bartender greeted us by name and remembered our drink orders. The eating choices were great and we were able to experience them all. It was great to have room service some mornings to expedite getting ready for an early excursion. We enjoyed the speciality restaurants but loved the World Cafe for lunch and The Restaurant for dinner. Again, the staff was excellent. As great as the ship was, the best thing about this trip were the shore excursions. Except for the last day in Bergen the tours and guides were great. We were especially pleased with our 2 days in St. Petersburg. The Ultimate St. Petersburg tour was well worth the expenditure. The guide was exceptional and the ability to see so much in such a short period of time was great. This was truly the highlight of the trip for us. I was not disappointed! Everything was wonderful from the itinerary, to the excursions, to the staff, to the food, and to the ship itself. The dining room staff was extremely attentive. My cabin steward knew my name after the first introduction and was great to visit with. I loved the high tea in the afternoons. Mamsen's was a true delight. I just wish it had been open more hours . I enjoyed sitting in the Explorer's Lounge watching the beautiful sights . We ate at both of the specialty restaurants, but I can honestly say that the food in the dining room was just as good. We were the first cruise with a new set of singers and dancers, and you could tell that they were a little bit unseasoned. I chose this cruise because of the countries it included. The staff on all the Viking cruises I have been on always make me feel special. The tours are interesting. The guides are knowledgeable, friendly, and willing to answer questions. I appreciate the capability of accessing information on the TV in the room. The food is excellent, service is above expectations. Viking cruises are well worth the money because of comfort, friendly staff, knowledgeable guides, and all the extras included. I have observed and experienced the help desk staff deal with questions and/or problems professionally, calmly, and efficiently. It amazes me that everything is dealt with promptly. Days are well planned out. Guests can participate in as many activities as they want or find many places to relax however they want. The entire ship is always spotless. The many different types of restaurants offer cuisine for everyone’s palate. I highly recommend Viking river and ocean cruises. My experience on each has consistently exceeded my expectations. It was a great cruise and we really wanted to see Norway. The food was better then we expected. We tried all three dinning rooms and we felt the Italian was the best. The ports and the tours was interesting and educational. The service in the dinning rooms and the cabin stewards was above expectation. We were so impressed we are looking forward to our next ocean cruise. Embarkation and disembarkation was smooth and we did not have to stand in hallways as you do on larger ships. We enjoyed the choice of places to eat and that you could eat around the pool or in small areas around the ship. The cabin was large and the bathroom was larger than most ships. Viking does a great job with entertainment and making our cruise one of the most enjoyable ones we have gone on in a long time. We are looking forward to our next one. Read Less

I choose this cruise because of the excellent river cruises we had heard about from other people. In addition, this cruise included 2 days in St. Petersburg and it was important to me to have that stop part of the trip. The food was excellent! Not only was the food great in the two specialty restaurants but the World Cafe and The Restaurant were wonderful and included items to satisfy everyone’s tastes and desires. The staff was very friendly and professional. Viking really knows how to make a cruise happen efficiently and with ease for the customer. The ports of call were great and while we mostly went on the included tours, the several others that we purchased we well worth the added expense. The ship was only 2 years old and beautiful. The staterooms were comfortable and having our on veranda was just right. The ship’s decor and common areas were lovely and provided a casual but elegant atmosphere for relaxation. We could not have been more pleased with our experience on this cruise. Read Less

Once again Viking has surpassed expectations for all aspects from pre-cruise to embarkation to disembarkation and flight home - everything in between. Every single Viking employee from captain to room stewards were polite, attentive and knowledgeable. See separate section for comments about cabin. Dining options were excellent with specialty dining included and easy to reserve. We took most dinners in main dining room - outstanding service, varied menu, open seating, small room atmosphere. All common rooms were comfortable with books available for reading and interesting art work. The free spa is excellent and a great place to relax. Onboard entertainment adequate for small ship. The itinerary was of course the highlight. 11 ports and 8 countries in 14 days was amazing. Included and optional tours were all excellent. Every tour guide provided a memorable experience. All-in-all Viking goes out of their way to make you comfortable and part of the family. Read Less

We have really enjoyed two river cruises and wanted to try an ocean cruise. We had not visited Northern Europe so thought the Viking Homelands cruise would be perfect. It gave us a chance to experience lots of different countries and cities. We also wanted to be able to spend some time in St. Petersburg. Our cabin was very comfortable. We enjoyed the food options - especially being able to have meals in various locations. The public areas were numerous and extremely comfortable. The entertainment in the evenings was varied and very professional. We also enjoyed the various lectures by the historians on board that gave us historical perspectives of each of our destinations as we were approaching those destinations. The service on board the ship was outstanding, including the staff when we were boarding and disembarking; the meals; the loungesand the housekeeping personnel. We also felt that each of our guides on each of our excursions in the various ports were professional and interesting and entertaining. Read Less
