Highly recommend Viking Ocean. Excellent cruise, service, deluxe cabin is set up very nicely - plenty of storage. Bathroom is very nice- heated floors, plenty of storage space. Our cabin was kept very cleaned - serviced twice a day. Always had plenty of ice. The main dinning room and World Café are very good. Our favorite is Manfredi's. Excellent. Least favorite and should replace is the Chef Table. Shore Excursions were very good. The included are nice, we did the optional tour to Windsor Castle and Monet Gardens -- the guides were excellent. Did our own private tour in Cherbourg to the American Sector. We suggested on the review that they give us more time in Portugal and skip the A Coruna port as well as they could skip Haugesund, Norway - not much to see and the shops all closed on Saturday at 4:00 pm and we did not dock until 1:45 pm and with tour no time to shop. What is great about Viking Ocean is it is geared for adults - not children. Very relaxing - pool area is great, options for entertainment. If you go don't miss the Rat Pack and Cabaret in the Torshavn lounge. What is great about Viking is you can do their tours or your own, they don't hassle you about getting off the ship - they supply free transportation getting into the city and back to the ship. You can drink your own wine at dinner without a corkage fee. They are very service oriented, friendly and provide an excellent cruise experience. Wonderful lounges. Read Less

We had sailed on Viking Rhine River cruise and loved it and were intrigued by the ads for the Viking Ocean itineraries. The ship was fabulous, it was truly the nicest ship we had ever sailed . It was wonderful.Food was excellent, although the Chef Table could use a better ways of serving...we felt very rushed, as our wine glasses kept adding up on our table, while we were eating. A restaurant fashioned like this needed to slow down between courses. But my biggest complaint was the lack of time in each port.We would have been better off having on or two less ports, and spending longer days or more overnights in the others. In our itinerary, if we didn't go to Coruna, which basically a waste, we could have spent more time in Portugal. We whisked around Lisbon and Porto so fast, that I hardly remember half of what we saw. But overall, it was otherwise a wonderful voyage and we are already booked for your Turquoise Caribbean cruise out of Miami in December Looking forward to it, and anxiously awaiting your newest itineraries for 2019. Hope there are some new choices.. Read Less

Good cruise, great food and wonderful cabin. A few of the included tours didn't meet the standards for the rest of the cruise. Especially in Porto, the tour guide did not need the level of the tour guides in other cities. Had a great time in Paris, the tour guide was very knowledgeable. Food on the shop was was great! The spa was very comforting as well. This is our second Viking Ocean Cruise and I rate them very highly. Suburb quality. Met several wonderful people in the wait staff. Going off season was not a disadvantage. We dressed accordingly and had a wonderful visit. Actually much better than in season when the temperature is much hotter. I love Barcelona! All of the sightseeing is great there. I'm a fan of Gaudi. He's absolutely fantastic. What a great mind! Service in the restaurant is fabulous, the quality of the food in restaurant is suburb. We chose Viking because they had the best Med stops as well as the level of luxury and service. Viking is a top notch company. We have been so pleased with the river cruises so we gave their ocean cruise a try. Wonderful overall experience!!! Having done over 15 ocean cruises this was by far the best! We loved the size of the ship. We never felt like a number at all, in fact the staff knew us and would often greet us by name! The embarkation was effortless. The bar service wonderful. The shore excursions were all really good and they allowed us to change one of our excursions due to an injured ankle in our party. The dining options were spectacular! The buffet was over the top good! Fresh sushi every night! Our stateroom was like being in the lap of luxury! The disembarkation was easy and we didn't have to wait in any long lines, that is very rare! We would defiantly cruise with Viking Ocean Cruises again! Read Less

We chose this cruise because it was going to both Tunis and Algiers, ports we have always wanted to go to. The offshore excursions were wonderful. Viking made sure that everything went smoothly. Malta and Sardinia were fascinating as well, and the guided tours were very professionally done. There was always enough personnel to adjust our daily itineraries if we chose to do so. The lectures on board regarding the destination ports were extremely helpful. Just a piece of advice. Change your dollars to Euros before you board the ship because there is no way to change currency on board. We would have loved to make more purchases in Tunis and Algiers, but we did not have enough Euros. The food in the restaurants on board was excellent and there were so many choices of where to dine all day. The service by everyone was high caliber. We look forward to our next Viking journey. Originally, we planned this cruise to complete the circle of the Mediterranean following our earlier cruise from Barcelona to Rome. Sadly, mechanical issues resulted in our cruise going from Barcelona, almost to Toulon, France, and then back to Barcelona for 12 days. We were offered the opportunity to remain on board with access to free shore excursions, free shuttles to and from the city, and of course, all the services of the ship. What could have been a huge disappointment turned into one of our best travel experiences. We explored Barcelona and the surrounding area with gusto. The staff and crew were nothing short of amazing, never letting us feel mistreated. There were unexpected financial considerations made as well, so in all, we felt not cheated, but rewarded. Viking Ocean is certainly our first choice for future cruises (we have in fact already booked another), and we anticipate more, positive experiences. We did not partake of the on-board entertainment, with one exception, but anecdotal feedback from other cruisers indicated a great deal of success. The exception was the staff bringing a flamenco experience on board for our viewing pleasure, and they were a total delight! We were interested in the ports of call and had heard good things about Viking. There ARE good things about Viking, including amazing service people who are very well trained. Here's what is not so good: 1: The included tours were done by local guides and were not well organized or supervised. After trying three, we gave them up as an awful waste of time. We tried three other tours that we paid for and they were no better. Very disappointing. We had one great guide. The other five don't make the cut. Depending on where the ship is able to dock, you are/or are not able, to manage to see the sites on your own. Rome eg. is hours away on a bus ride and the tours deadly boring. We'd been to Rome so fortunately we didn't "miss" Rome but you really do not "see" Rome and several other places on this cruise. 2. Our 22 days included 11 days of "new food" and 11 days of new entertainment. After the first half, landing in Venice, we found to our dismay that the exact same menu rotated. For our taste, there was an over emphasis on beef and veal, and hardly any poultry choices. What fish we had was good. EVERY night we were offered the same vegetables medley of broccoli, cauliflower, carrots and zucchini. Other vegetable choices were very limited. The evening entertainment after we set sail was fun for the first 11 days and some of the lectures were interesting. Then they repeat. Even the Ted Talks rotated the same talks! Taking the two halves is a mistake and feels like you are being overcharged. 3. Our observation was that Viking and their staff were tone deaf to people with disabilities. We are fortunate not to be affected but it was painful to watch those who were. In all the 22 days we were on board, I did not see a single wheelchair offered, hear a single word about assistance available, see a single written notice. If you have physical challenges, beware. They seem tone deaf. 4. Everything was impeccably clean until we had been on board two weeks or so. The dishes, silverware and glasses became "gritty" with (hopefully sterilized) food particles and chairs developed stains that were not cleaned. Their sanitation and hand washing system is really good however. The ship is beautiful and the open areas very well decorated and comfortable. Impressive. The staff relentlessly cheerful and helpful. Wonderful. If you enjoy spending $1000 a day to be indulged and pampered, this is an OK choice. If you are more curious about your destinations, looking for some adventure or a rich learning opportunity this is not for you. Many people read books...lots of books. I love books but I don't spend $1000 a day to do it. My couch at home is equally comfortable and free. If you want to know which of the two halves of the cruise to take.....Barcelona to Venice or Venice to Athens, we would suggest the latter. You'll spend a lot less money that we did and you'll see much more beautiful and interesting places. Read Less

Cruise was booked whilst on the ship on another cruise in April. Original destination was Venice to Istanbul, changed to Venice to Athens (3 nights in Greece!). Not ideal as we had been to Athens & Greece before many times. Venice was embarkation port so no excursions, departed for Slovakia that night and then down the Croatia coast to Greece and Greek islands, ending up 2 days in Athens. Half the cruise was thus wasted for us. Ship was full this cruise and the service had got a lot worse than the previous cruise which was only 80% full. Service in the World Cafe was poor most meal times, with waiters outnumbered by "managers" - with stripes on their uniforms, and none of them paying much attention to what the waiters were doing. Most waiters seemed to be sent down to serve in the main restaurant, which was always busy with queues to get a table. The ones left in World Cafe were not "on the ball" much of the time (some were very good, but many seemed to want to loaf around). (World Cafe was at dinner almost empty, but we were told by Viking the lack of service was due to the World Cafe being "extremely popular and busy"! Not true. Service in the rest of the ship was excellent - housekeeping staff are great and nothing is too much trouble, staff on the desks and in the spa are very good. Nobody on board seemed to have a clue as to what was happening to us when we disembarked, which was total disorganised chaos. Herded off the ship into a large "terminal" building to locate our suitcases, waited around for our turn, identified and watched them loaded onto trolleys before being walked out to coaches. Watched our suitcases loaded into another coach! Told that was OK, all coaches leaving for airport at same time. Untrue! Waited 40 minutes at airport after arriving for coach with our suitcases on to arrive! Then told to get ourselves checked in and leave. No proper organisation at all. Read Less

Service and accommodations were excellent! We stayed an extra couple of days in Venice before the cruise. Cabin was luxurious. Food was very good from specialty restaurants to general dining. We did not take full advantage of entertainment and on board activities. The shore excursions were well thought out and varied quite a bit in choices. Did not have any issue being locked out of selections. Smoothest disembark I've encountered. Would we go again? - We are in 2018 to Norway, on the same ship! This cruise was a celebration for being recently retired. Viking did not disappoint in making it special for us. Seeing the Mediterranean and ports in Italy, France was definitely a bucket list item. The only disappointment for the whole cruise was not having enough time in Barcelona, the final destination. We chose to add extra days in Venice at the start instead. To be honest, by the end of the trip we were ready to return home. Read Less

We had an excellent experience on our Viking Ocean cruise called the Mediterranean Odyssey. The ship was the appropriate size for our interests, The included land tours were a highlight for us. We enjoyed the dining options in the evenings. We would recommend this cruise for anyone who wants to do more than just sit on a ship and watch the waves! We went to ports that had special attractions for us. The ship crew made sure we had a good experience on all our tours. One of our most favorite tour was a guided bike trip into the mountains on the Greek island of Corfu. We had an opportunity to meet the local folks in their own homes. Our cabin was an appropriate size with an include veranda. Each of the suites had a veranda which made for arrivals and departures from a port more interesting since you could watch the action of the crew. Read Less

Original cruise was to embark in Istanbul, but was changed to Athens due to unrest in Turkey. Disappointing, but understandable. New ship, large amount of space for guests. Modern, not ostentatious décor. We were in an Explorer suite which is significantly larger than standard. Amenities simple but adequate. TV with good range of shows and information. Free Wi-Fi and it worked! We dined at World Cafe for breakfast and 1 dinner. That buffet was reasonable quality and variety, but did not seem to change. The Restaurant on Deck 2 provided 3 course meals with some "Classics" offered every night and an additional varying menu with some local produce. Despite being in the more expensive suite (which was to include 3 nights dinners in the Signature restaurants of Manfredi's and the Chef's Table), we were unable to eat at the popular Manfredi's as we hadn't booked prior. The Chef's Table menu was a set menu, changed every 3 nights. The Norwegian cuisine menu seemed out of context when in Mediterranean in summer but the service and staff were excellent. Wine included with meals, extra if bought at the bars. Dress code was relaxed. Jacket optional, no ties required. Included Shore excursions were mostly walking tours of the ports of call with wonderful guides. Groups of 30 -36 were a little large at times in crowded ports. The additional tours were good value and to varied, interesting locations (but still large group size) We have cruised with Holland America (Alaska,1400 people), Windstar (Tahiti, 100 people),and Silverseas (Oceania Expedition cruise , 60). Viking is regarded as 'Small ship' but I found over 900 (majority Americans, some from UK, NZ and Australia) on a 10 day cruise meant it was difficult to catch up again with fellow travellers. There are so many wonderful spaces and activities. Some of the shows, although free, had to be pre-booked and we missed these but heard they were of high standard. Captain's welcome and farewell featured some of the entertainers. Read Less

This was our first trip to the western Mediterranean. We embarked in Barcelona after an efficient and pleasant trip from the airport. The ship and cabins are beautiful and comfortable. Felt like home from the beginning. All of the dining options were wonderful. Excellent variety of food customized to your liking. We especially enjoyed Manfriedis Italian specialty restaurant. Mamsens gave a little hint of Norwegian delicacies. The bar service and wine selection were some of the best we have ever had. We have never taken advantage of so many of the entertainment venues. They seemed to be tailored to the adult crowd with enrichment lectures of interest to older adults. We also enjoyed all of the shore excursions. Those that were included were ones we would have taken anyway so we only went on 2 that were not included. The post cruise trip to Iceland was fabulous! We would do this again without reservation! Scandinavian décor (Norwegian Ship). Clean and spacious staterooms as well as the Junior suite we had,(Suite 8001). No one forward of us or above us. Super quiet! Food was good and ports and excursions were exceptional as well as stimulating. We were on an ocean cruise from Barcelona to Venice. We just completed a AMA Bordeaux cruise and found it to be inferior to Viking (comparison) is unfair as one was ocean going and the other was a riverboat). We intend to stick with Viking in the future. Viking dining was same as AMA excepting the Chef's Kitchen at the aft of the AMA ship. It was close to being a Michelin rated dining venue. We have to more Viking cruise next year and have reserved suite 8001 on both. I have lots of years cruising, but most of it was big gray ships with big guns and missiles. We were excited to see Mediterranean region for the first time. We spent the first days in Venice & had both tours & opportunities to explore on our own. Everything went very smoothly, from our air trip over, pick-up from the airport & embarkation. This was our first ocean trip with Viking and we were very impressed with many thoughtful details in the ship as well as the attentive staff. We have traveled with Viking many times on the river cruises and find that they keep refining both the cabins and the overall ships. Having traveled on both large and mid-sized ocean liners, we loved the smaller ship. Overall, we would rate the guides and tours as excellent. One of the best tours was Nice, which was an "on your own". That being said, the guide made certain we had a meeting place with free bathrooms, complementary snacks, great view of the promenade and then proceeded to give us a wonderful tour of the old market area of Nice. She made certain that we were aware of what was available in the area in our areas of special interests. The restaurant staff was exceptionally well informed and both they and the cabin staff went over and above throughout the trip. We look forward excitedly to our next ocean cruises. Read Less

Pre and post excursions are a little pricey but again the service and accommodations were excellent . We wanted to see all that istanbul offered ,unfortunately because of the recent bombing in the tourist section, Viking opted to substitute seeing troy and the ruins in Canakkale. It was still really interesting. The food was outstanding and so was the service. People on board just couldn't do enough for us. We ended up purchasing a beautiful Turkish rug and a gorgeaous blue diamond ring, both from stores that Viking guaranteed. The cabin, which was on the third floor Deluxe Veranda seamed to be smaller than the Viking River Cruise room. Maybe it was just the way it was layed out. We aren't in our room very much, so I guess it doesn't really mean too much. Most of the shore tours were right about the length of time. We were always given time to shop etc. after the tours. One of the best tours was an extra in Santorini to the ruins of Akrotiri, ruins of the volcanic eruption. We really felt special to be able to see these ruins. The tour guide was so knowledgable. The evening entertainment was for about an hour in length, which was just perfect, and extremely entertaining and knowledgeable. The ship is outstanding in every way. I've only been on two other ships but they are pale in conparison. The dining rooms vary to your likes and dislikes. We normally don't go to Gourmet Dinners, but the dinner at The Chief's Table was really delish!! Even my husband cleaned his plate of food he normally would not order. It was nice to escape to the Explorer's lounge when it was needed. I would give the total cruise a AA++! Our only dissappointment was that we didn't see any of Venice,Italy. We felt misled about the broucher because it included time in Venice and they swept us off directly to the airport at 9:45 A.M. and our flight wasn't till 2:45 P.M. If Viking would have scheduled us a little later, we could have seen at least 3 or 4 hours of Venice. Read Less

Viking Ocean is by far the best ocean cruise line we have taken. We have cruised with NCL, Princess and Celebrity and the level of service provided by Viking is a cut above the rest. First of all, we like their itineraries. We took the “Empires of the Mediterranean” tour from Istanbul to Venice and went to some fascinating venues including Santorini and Dubrovnik. Since there had been recent terrorist attacks in Istanbul for safety reasons, Viking Ocean cut short that visit and substituted Troy instead. Luckily, we had a pre-cruise booked for Istanbul and we did find Troy interesting. Viking Ocean appeals to us because it does not have the Las Vegas strip look of other larger liners. Passengers on our ship the Viking Sea, numbered around 600 because of people cancelling due to fear about terrorism in Istanbul, but the ship only has a capacity of around 940 passengers. Amenities such as elevator service equals that of larger ships. The stateroom we had was DV5 level and had 270 square feet plus a verandah. It was quite roomy and elegant. In fact, elegance of understated Scandinavian style would describe the Viking Sea. Everywhere there are little surprise nooks to sit in and read and art pieces to admire. The tone of superior service was set upon our arrival when we were greeted with champagne and the strains of music played by a classical trio. Our favourite hang out was the 2 level Explorer's Lounge with 180 degree views of the ocean. Viking Ocean is considered more expensive than other cruise lines, however I like the fact that all the costs except gratuities are pre-paid and you are not nickeled and dimed to death like on other ships. There are no continuous merchandise sales or photography sales pushed upon you. Amenities such as Internet, wine and beer with meals, and two hour free excursions are included in the price of the fare so there are no surprises when you get your bill. As we are not big drinkers we found that the wine veritably flowed! The food is excellent. The World Café serves buffet style and it included an ice cream and gelato bar, and a latte machine at no additional charge. Other lines charge for these items. Above all the regular coffee is very good. With other cruise lines the coffee was so awful I had to get a specialty coffee card. At night this buffet served excellent sushi, crab legs and other seafood. There is an outside grill plus wonderful specialty restaurants such as Manfredi's which serves Italian fare and the Captain's Table where you can do food sampling and wine pairings. They have a more traditional restaurant plus a buffet or grill when the specialty restaurants get booked. You are allowed 2 bookings of each specialty restaurant and unlike other cruise lines you are not charged extra for these. Another surprise was Mamsen's where you could pop in for a heart-shaped waffle for breakfast. Also, there was the Wintergarden where everyday they served tea time pastries, sandwiches and scones to the strains of the classical trio. Most of the time we took the more lengthy paid excursions instead of the 2 hour free ones however the level of the free ones that we took were good. There were fascinating enrichment lectures on naval warfare, art and music aboard ship. We attended sessions on naval battles that fit with the territory we passed including Gallipoli. These warfare talks were given by a Rear Admiral of the British Navy. The entertainment was with one exception of an outside singer, provided by the ship's singers and dancers. They were a small but a mighty talented troupe. We thoroughly enjoyed their performances particularly the way troupe members mingled jovially with passengers, Loads of fun! We especially enjoyed the trio of male singers who put on a tribute to the "Rat Pack" in the Torshaven Lounge. The house band was terrific too! Since this was the maiden voyage of the Viking Sea there was a glitch with our air conditioning that was resolved to our satisfaction. The gym is small and there are no classes but enough equipment to get the job done. We loved this voyage so much that we have booked another Viking Ocean trip called "Barcelona, the Baltic and Beyond" for 2017! Read Less
