Our pastor and his wife recommended Viking as they did a re-positioning cruise. They told us all about the different foods to try and to make sure we went on both sides of the buffet lines. I loved to order the grilled shrimp at lunch time. I did not like the rocky nights with the ship. It was very rocky every night. We did not get a tour or explanation of our room from our steward. That was disappointing. We went with 2 other couples and they told us about the rooms. I LOVED the heated bathroom floors. Our cabin was cleaned daily. The staff was very friendly and personal. We were celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary. The Chef made us a delicious cake for that. We loved the entertainment, Abba, and The Beatles night. My most favorite place on the ship was the Spa. The mineral pool, Steamy sauna, snowy room and heated loungers. First class ship for sure. Loved the Tea Time with the yummy scones and mini sandwiches. You are never hungry that's for sure. Oh and we loved Edwina who served the ice cream and gelato. We feel she deserves a huge raise. We are sure gonna miss her smiling face. It was a little hard getting use to driving on the opposite side of the rode and the NARROW roads, when we went on our excursions. The guides were very informative. I enjoyed it the most being a retired Teacher in all. We met the Executive Chef and he took us on the galley tour. Loved every minute of it. We were shocked to see an escalator down there. Also all the stainless steal. So clean every where We appreciated the laundry room that was available to us.. We would of loved a sea day or 2 so we could of relaxed. We would definitely go on another Viking Cruise. Read Less

Everyone was so pleasant, always greeting us with a smile and acknowledgement. We had a lot of fun with the staff on our Baggo game. In all of our eatery places, we enjoyed and I believe the staff did as well, the camaraderie with us. Every time we went ashore, the staff had a humorous comment to say, especially with our name being 'Sweet'. We had a tour of the galley and of the bridge. This was so interesting, not having this privilege on any other ship. The staff work so hard and it seems the food establishment work such long hours to feed us, the hungry people. Thanks for all you do. We were three siblings and spouses on this cruise and we would start our day by saying, "we'll meet at the white chairs." These were in the hallway near our cabins, 3040, 3042, 3052. It was also convenient to have the launderette near our rooms. Read Less

This was our third sailing on the Viking Sea, and my wife and I have become very fond of this spectacularly beautiful, well-designed, and immaculately-maintained ship! The staterooms are setup just right to accommodate our needs, the public spaces are excellent and abundant, and the crew seem uniformly happy and eager to please. The food and entertainment are very good, and the other amenities (wifi, pool, spa, fitness center, sports deck, lounges, laudromat, and shops) are very good. We chose this particular cruise because of the itinerary (Caribbean and South America) included some ports that we hadn't visited previously (Santo Domingo, Cartagena, and Santa Marta), two ports that I hadn't visited for more than 60 years and was eager to enjoy again (Aruba and Curacao), two places that we are very familiar with (San Juan and St. Kitts), as well as opportunities to enjoy two At-Sea days. Viking Cruises handled the arrangements for our air transportation, our transfers between the airport and cruise terminal prior to our embarkation, and also after debarkation. When we arrived at the airport in San Juan, it took a while for all of the expected passengers to obtain their baggage and to check-in with the Viking representatives.. The bus that was brought us to the ship had a door malfunction, and it took a long time for us to get through the San Juan rush hour traffic.. But everything fell into place as soon as we arrived at the cruise terminal -- welcome, check-in, champagne, dinner, meeting our stateroom attendant, and having our baggage delivered to our cabin. This was our 23rd ocean cruise, and we have observed the cruise industry's trend toward increasing large cruiseships, and increasingly large numbers of passengers onboard those ships. On the mega-ships, it seems that one must spend a large amount of time waiting for elevators,.and searching for a quiet place in public areas to read or talk. But this is NOT the way things are on Viking Oceans cruises! We are impressed at the variety, beauty, and comfort of public spaces on Viking Oceans ships! The Atrium, Wintergarden, Explorer Lounge, Pool Area, and decks are superb! Viking Oceans ships offer several dining alternatives, including The Restaurant (the ship's elegant main dining room), the World Cafe (buffet), Manfredi's (Italian food), The Chef's Table (gourmet food & drink), Mamsen;s (Scandinavian deli), and the Pool Grill (hamburgers, etc.). My wife has certain food sensitivities, and the ship's wait staff were quite knowledgeable about those issues, and very accommodating to her needs. The food was sometimes excellent, and always at least very good. My wife and I enjoyed walking the outside decks every day, and I also worked-out in the ship's excellent Fitness Center every day! We enjoyed the musicians and singers that entertained us onboard the ship. As musicians ourselves, we appreciated the variety of musical styles that were presented, as well as the musicianship of the performers. Read Less

Wife and I have been cruising over 25 years. These days we prefer suites on longer cruises so we upgraded to the Explorer Suite. Well worth the money. Great room and largest balcony we’ve ever had. Viking Sea is only two years old so we were definitely spoiled. Ship is in great shape and many things on board are fascinating like the shower in the suite. It’s walk-in with no ledge. Great drainage via great design. Heated towel racks etc. were all as one would expect in the top-rated suites. Room came with lots of extras and as the brochures say, all is included. Room service was great for early breakfast when shore excursions were leaving early. Service was impeccable. Food was great. Entertainment was so-so. The night club was fun. The house band playing in the night club was probably the best musicians on the trip. Had a great couple singing just about anything you could name and they hit it out of the park. Bar tenders do the flippy thing with bottles which is fun to watch as well. Pools, gym, etc. was all new and great. This trip was Barcelona and Beyond, a three-week cruise I understand they will no longer offer. Itinerary hit the Baltic region where we’ve never been. I’ll be brief and say this was the best cruise we’ve ever been on in over 25 years, but there are a few things that surprised us. 1. Shore excursions: The literature says shore excursions are included. Wrong. One shore excursion is included at no additional charge at each stop, but that excursion usually consists of a 3-hour bus ride with the tour guide talking about a site as you drive by. These are also what you get if you take the transfers onto the ship and off. They use the 3 hours to kill while the ship gets ready for boarding or the hotel is ready for check-in. I’d probably take a taxi in the future. Plan on paying for excursions the old-fashioned way if booking through the cruise. You can book your own through somebody like Viator.com but if they don’t get you back in time you’re screwed and the boat leaves without you. One thing about Viking, they stick to a schedule as far as departures. 2. Tips: The literature states a daily rate is charged per person that goes to handle all tips. Not really. At the end of the cruise we wanted to help out the crew and give more money by charging it to our room account and directing that to be split between members of the crew. After I already made the payment, I was talking to members of the crew. Each individual told me the same story. They get the same amount in their checks regardless of how full the ship is with guests. They never see any variance in the amount which strikes me as unusual since I’m sure other guests probably had the same idea of adding more to the account. So, if you want to add to the base amount go old-school and get envelopes from the passenger service desk and stuff your cash in them for tips at the end for those you believe deserve the additional amounts. 3. Hotels for before and after: Viking did an excellent job picking hotels. At least 4 stars for each. 4. Before and after excursions: You’re on your own for these. Viking only books those that occur during the cruise. At least they did on this one. We arranged our own. 5. Web site: Very useful. Fill out all the information for express check-in in the My Journey site. Site also had good info and videos of stops etc. Study it well in advance of your departure. 6. Travel insurance: Viking offers insurance that is good for the trip, but could use more for medical. You might want to augment this coverage with a medical that offers additional coverage. For instance, in states I had to be airlifted after an accident which cost over $40,000. In Europe and other parts of the globe, should the unthinkable happen, anything that flies costs 4 or 5 times that, plus the additional cost to repatriate back to the states. Just something to think about Summary ….. it will spoil you taking other cruises. Read Less

Transatlantic from San Juan to Barcelona with stops in Madeira, Tangier, and Cadiz. The ship is beautiful! The food was excellent no matter the venue. Enjoyed the entertainment and movies with discussion groups afterward. The Meet & Mingle was outstanding—cocktails, hot appetizers and officers who truly wanted to engage. There are outdoor fitness machines on the sports deck for those who prefer to enjoy ocean sounds rather than gym noises. Lots of nooks and small group gathering space on the outdoor decks. Loved having laundry facilities on each floor—including an ironing board. Let us pack less with no expense. Free detergent (or you can use your own). Great social spot as we waited for a washer or dryer to open up. Lots of men doing the laundry! Viking also lets you bring your own liquor and wine aboard with no corkage fees. Wine and beer offered freely at lunch and dinner but cocktails are reasonably priced. They treat adults like adults. One initial challenge was loud banging noises in our cabin. The first night there were six crew members including head of housekeeping in our cabin trying to figure out where the noise was coming from. Because cruise was sold out, told no other cabin. Next day, noise was worse. Someone had canceled so we were moved—no noise! Finally a good night sleep! Someone else had also complained about noise and was moved to our old cabin but said the noise was worse so moved back to their previous cabin. Two days later, we found the problem—a ratchet strap hitting the metal on a lifeboat which was right under a vent pipe at our old cabin. Suggested they pad it—maintenance showed up immediately and did so. End of noise. Responsiveness to our complaint was immediate and taken seriously. Commend housekeeping, maintenance and guest relations. Stellar. Loved the heated bathroom floors! Lovely cabins with luxurious bathrooms. Public spaces are inviting. Different music (not loud!) rotated between—a string trio, pianist, jazz, etc. My husband is a singer and would’ve liked a passenger choir to fill some of the Sea days. The CD said he’d been lobbying for one so would keep trying. All in all, loved this cruise. We met more people on this cruise than any other. Signed up for two more in future cruises. Read Less

As first time cruise folks, we were quite involved in asking the more seasoned fellow cruisers their opinion of what we were experiencing on this trip. We never heard one comment of negativity. We chose Viking due to the overall ratings that this cruise line keeps receiving. We were not interested in gambling or having a wide range of ages on board. Viking seemed to fit the bill. The ship was impeccable, the staff pleasant and accommodating, the food outstanding, and finally, the entertainment was outstanding. Hats off to Viking for giving us the cruise of a lifetime. Your representation as a high tiered line is justly deserved. Our Cabin Steward went out of his way to assist me on the first night of the cruise--sea sickness! Each day he made contact with me to meet any other needs that we had( not to mention the superb work in our stateroom!). The best Viking band and all the musicians and singers made us laugh, dance, sing along, inspired, and brought back many memories of our younger years and the music . The port calls and educational talks were quite informative and added to the depth of our knowledge for which we are thankful. Hats off to the entire crew and staff of Viking Cruise line for a very memorable and fantastic cruise. Read Less

Selected because we had not been to any of the locations except for St. Kitts, which was a substitute for Venezuela. We had taken one Viking cruise previously and that was the river cruise from Prague to Paris. While we LOVED the river cruise, it was more about the excursions and the fantastic job the guides did. The ship was great, the meals were great as was the crew. Europe is full of history and antiquity. The excursions on our Caribbean cruise were rather primitive in contrast to historic Europe. While we enjoyed experiencing the local flavor, it was nothing in comparison to our European trip. However, the ship was a fantastic experience! This included the nightly entertainment and the facilities. We saw every show and got to know who our favorites were. A tremendous Beatles review and a phenomenal Abba concert. The restaurants were superb and the facilities (gym, spa, sauna, steam room, and ice palace) were over the top. I used the sauna and ice palace on 4 different occasions. The director of activities on the ship was a delightful individual and kept us in stitches. We had previously taken two cruises with Celebrity. Food was mediocre, service was ok, and there were too many people on board. The Viking Sea was a perfect size and handled very well. We did the river cruise with my sister and husband and they joined us on the Caribbean cruise, along with my daughter and husband. Viking is the only way to cruise. We are having a difficult time deciding on our next voyage. Thank you, Viking! You're the best! Read Less

Had never seen this area of Northern Europe and this cruise offered stops at several countries, plus there was an included tour in each city as well as many optional tours. Everything on this cruise was perfect and a great value for the price. This was our third Viking cruise in the last 18 months. We have found that Viking cruises offer high quality dining with a great variety and selection of foods. I especially loved the house special ribeye steaks at Manfredi's Restaurant. I ate 7 of them over the course of the cruise. Best steaks I have ever eaten. The staff on the ship was outstanding. We truly felt pampered. This was by far the best cruise we have taken and frankly I was not a cruise fan before our first Viking Cruise. We have considered checking out other cruise lines but feel we get such a great value for the dollar with Viking Cruises we will continue to cruise with them. Read Less

This was our first "ocean" cruise with Viking (we previously did a river cruise). This company REALLY knows how to take care of their guests. They ship was just the right size and so beautiful. Our room had plenty of space and they provided binoculars, umbrella, extra bedding when requested, free snacks and drinks...I could go on and on. We definitely will use them again. The included excursions were top notch. I believe we only paid for an extra excursion in St Petersburg. We loved the difference in the various ports...small, large urban, historic, party town, etc. Some guests had a bit of a hard time with all the uneven cobblestone, so be forewarned about the older towns. We did a LOT of walking in the ports and had no issues (all four of us in late 50s early 60s). We appreciated that we could watch all of the port talks in our cabin and did not have to attend in person. Read Less

Admiring spectacular fjords and experiencing midnight sun embarked us on this journey, and Viking Ocean Cruise - Into the Midnight Sun far exceeded our expectations. We were (and are) very happy that we chose Viking and took the trip. The crew met us at the airport in Bergen and escorted us to a very comfortable looking bus. We were given a bottle of water, much needed at that moment having traveled hours. Needless to say, the bus ride to the ship was smooth ensuring us of a good trip. Checking-in was thorough and efficient, and friendly. We went to our room. Our steward, greeted us friendly but discreetly. He was informative, introduced each feature of the room and his service. Bags were delivered. We unpacked. Afterward, we walked around the ship. There were lots of reading areas! An actual library too! An atrium (where daily digital showing of Munch's collection accompanied with live music took place), five (5) culinary restaurants, gym, spa, theaters, etc. Modern, yet warmly yet cooly welcoming decor and furnishing. For the following 15 days, we enjoyed our home on Viking Oceans: tasted culinary delights, immersed ourselves in cultural and intellectual enrichment on board programs, participated in included and optional excursions learning and experiencing visiting villages, town and cities, and nurtured our body with stretching exercises at the gym or a run around a 1/4 mile track around the ship - incredibly freeing experience running in the ocean. We thank Viking Ocean Cruise and the crew. Read Less

The spa was very comforting as well. This is our second Viking Ocean Cruise and I rate them very highly. Suburb quality. Met several wonderful people in the wait staff. Going off season was not a disadvantage. We dressed accordingly and had a wonderful visit. Actually much better than in season when the temperature is much hotter. I love Barcelona! This was my spouse and my second cruise aboard the Viking Sea in four months. We had such a wonderful time on the first cruise, we couldn't resist the promotion to take another. The Viking Sea is like a luxurious boutique hotel on the ocean. The ship's common areas are numerous and unmatched by any I've seen. The staterooms are nicely appointed and comfortable, with heated floors in the spacious bathrooms. Customer service aboard the ship is incredible. And one of the advantages of sailing the same ship is you get to sail with many of the same crew and staff, with which you have already developed a relationship. It was somewhat of a comfortable reunion. The itinerary of this particular cruise included stops in Valletta, Malta, Tunis, Tunisia, and Algiers, Algeria....exotic places I never thought I would visit. These ports of calls/excursions were very exciting and culturally enriching. Other stops included Cagliari, Italy, Valencia, Spain, with disembarkation in Barcelona. Although the Viking Sea is considered a small ship, accommodating a little over 900 guests, the number of quality entertainment options and activities are astounding. Absolutely lovely cruise! Excellent array of food.Staff very attentive.Good airport pickup. Entertainment was low key and enjoyable. The bus service from ports was on time and clean, however rest rooms in the buses would be a good idea and would cut down on stops. Even though the ship was at capacity for the most part it did not give you the feeling of being overcrowded.Although the man dining room had excellent food, the specialty dining was a real treat. Everything on the ship was in good working order, however the "snow room" was out of order for this cruise, a minor inconvenience. Being Jewish the crew was very attentive in preparing a room with wine and Challah to enhance the Shabbat experience. I have taken many cruises and this was one of the best. Read Less

We chose this cruise because it was for New Year's in the Mediterranean and we wanted something different for New Year's 2017. Traveled without children. (The cruise was from Barcelona Spain, Toulon France, Monte Carlo Monaco, Florence/Pisa Italy, Rome Italy, Valletta Malta, Tunis/La Goulette Tunisia, Valeencia Spain and back to Barcelona, Spain.) We arrived in Barcelona, Spain and were greeted by Viking personnel and transported to the ship 'Viking Sea' which was docked in the harbor. We booked a Veranda BUT were upgraded to a Penthouse Veranda, absolutely wonderful. Left the port the second night for Toulon France, when the Turbine went Kaboom. The Captain assured us that the ship was SAFE, and the Engineers are working on the problem. Next morning we woke up and we were in Barcelona,Spain harbor. The announcement came and 2 options were provided (ship was still save). Returned to Barcelona vs, Toulon harbor because of the repair that needed to be done. Option 1 - Return back home as soon as Airline reservation can be obtained and receive money back plus 50%. Option 2 - Stay on the ship for the endurance of the cruise in Barcelona and receive money back plus 50%. We decided to stay for the endurance of the trip. Viking provided daily additional shore excursions, shuttle service to go into town, live entertainment on ship, lectures, and other arrangements. The trip was wonderful!!! Read Less

We chose this, our first cruise, in particular because it traveled to Israel, where day excursions took us to many places in the holy land we never thought we would ever see. Originally starting from Istanbul, we could tell the few new port changes in itinerary were meant to fill in for days we were meant to spend elsewhere. We chose Viking because emphasis is on experiences at the destinations, not the Mickey Mouse review or the extreme water slide. (Nothing wrong with that if you have a young family.) I particularly appreciated the ability to use their travel service (for a very reasonable charge) to make our atypical flight arrangements. We arrived in Athens two days before boarding the ship, to account for any airline equipment issues, and to take a day to explore. After the cruise terminated in Rome, we spent another week in Italy, flying home out of Venice. Viking made all the arrangements without hesitation. Viking's agent called us a few weeks before our trip with an offer to upgrade cabins. We negotiated a good price, and moved from a standard cabin to a penthouse junior suite. This was key to enjoying the trip so much more, as it was half again larger than our original room, included daily laundry services, and a wonderful steward who took such good care of us. The room was spotless and always freshened, and amenities almost new. Our in-room services were personal, always cheerful, and complete. The bathroom was large, included a double-sized shower and towel warming racks. Again, storage was more than we needed. Dining options spanned a wide range of cuisine, from hot dogs and burgers to sushi to fine dining. While mostly good, onboard meals will leave true foodies a bit underwhelmed. But that's forgivable when you're trying to serve a thousand people several times a day. We ordered in-room dining for a couple of breakfasts when our excursions were early. They arrived at or before the requested time, complete, and well-prepared. We normally don't seek out entertainment options, so I can't really speak to that. However, I/we attended several speaker sessions, and found them excellent pre- or post-excursion talks. Shore excursions were well planned, and led by extremely knowledgeable guides. Group sizes were however many could fit on the bus (about 25 people). I was grateful for the short-range radio transmitters used on all excursions. Each passenger was given a receiver and an in-ear monitor, allowing everyone to hear the guide as he/she spoke in normal tones. Unfortunately, there were some places where it would have been nice to spend more time, but, trips like this are meant to provide a glimpse into these historic locations. We can (and will) return another time. The excursion to Galilee, Jerusalem, and Bethlehem was a very long day. I wished we had had two days to cover this religiously significant area. When we weren't on shore, there were abundant books to choose from. I was surprised by one aspect of the cruise, that being nearly all the passengers were American. I hoped for a greater cultural diversity to enrich the experience, but I confirmed with our steward (who has worked Viking cruises around the world) that, regardless of trip, Americans fill the cabins almost exclusively. When we felt like being away from crowds, it was easy to find many comfortable places on the ship where we wouldn't see another soul. There we would sit in the sun and read. Read Less

The ports of call, for the most part were very interesting. The port talks helped to make each stop more enjoyable. We dined at nearly every restaurant and found the food quality and service to be superb. The fitness center and spa had very nice features including windows to view the outside while exercising. We also enjoyed the sport deck as well a deck four for covered walking outdoors. Furthermore, the open areas within the ship were well designed for social interactions. From the Wintergreen for high tea to the Explorer's Lounge Levels 1 & 2 were very inviting to mingle with other passengers or simply enjoy. Because our berth was on deck 7 we really enjoyed the short walk in the morning for a cup of coffee with pastry. We highly recommend Viking when planning an ocean or river cruise. Read Less

Loved our trip from beginning to end. We had been really keen to visit the Baltic ports and in particular St Petersburg and finding a cruise without unnecessary days at sea which included Norwegian fjords was suc a bonus. Everything was included in the price including most of our trips and we found we spent surpringly little on our holiday. We sailed from Bergen first north to Sogne Fjord and All the way up the Fjord to Flam. The scenery and sunsets were beautiful, helped by the long summer days. At Flam we chose an optional extra trip up the railway and cycled a very easy and beautiful route back down the valley. Memorable. Next stop Stavanger-great included walking tour and a lovely town. Oil museum was far more interesting than expected and enjoyed the best hot chocolate ever outside one of the colourful little restaurants. This made the pattern for an excellent trip. We used the included tours in most ports of call apart from St Petersburg where we took a very good 2 day tour with ballet included. Both in Stockholm and Copenhagen we also went on a boat trip-all so easy as Viking put you in the heart of the town. Everything on this trip was done for your comfort. There were shows and talks and very good preparations for the following day. All in all there was a real sense of peace on the boat, ALL staff spoke to you and would have helped in any way. We also loved the quiet corners with books provided, the piano, guitar and quartet playing in different parts of the ship and the afternoon tea in the Wintergarten. We enjoyed this so much we have already been on our second cruise with Viking Ocean. One other good point. We never had to queue for anything and embarkation and disembarkation we very easy. Usually the ship was in the town and we were told at 7 or 7.30 the gangway was down and we could go ashore if we chose. Read Less

The buffet is outstanding serving everything you could possibly want from a variety of soups, breads, fish, meats, vegetables, and desserts. They even have sushi available. And of course wine and beer are available at lunch and dinner. There's plenty to do on board from the exercise room, the spa, the snow grotto or go for a swim The staff are efficient and will see to your every need. And they do it with a smile. The only thing I wasn't thrilled about was some of the tours that were included. Maybe some of the tours you pay for were better. The best tour guides were in Berlin, Norway and Poland. But here again it all depends on the tour guide not Viking. Maybe they could do better to include museums. Read Less

A group invited us to join them and we were already familiar with the quality of the Viking Experience. But this was above and beyond! This was their inaugural sailing, supposedly to work out the "bugs". But where were the bugs? We didn't see any. The embarkation port was not availble to tour with Viking and we left Istanbul as soon as all were on board, due to safety concerns about the situation in Istanbul at the time. Everthing went like clockwork. But Viking came up with another treat, a call at the port near Troy, which we would not have probably ever toured had this not occured. It was not as "touristy" a stop, very educational, and while we were disappointed about missing Istanbul, it was a worthy substitute. No kids! Yeah! Love kids, but this is not a cruise for them and the ability to find some quiet space for a nap, or a good book, was most relaxing. Tea in the afternoon was very special, with lovely strings in the background. The spa, fitness center, steam room were top notch, and we both used their facilities daily. Educational topics were raised before each landing, advising us quite well on navigating the upcoming shore adventures. Most excursions were well done, and when we expressed a disappointment about one of them, we were accorded a complete refund when we had not even asked for one. I suspect that guide will not be working for them again. Our room was state of the art with all we could have desired. If there was a need (I cannot think of one) our steward was always availble with the most cheerful, friendly demeanor. Everything was spotless, and I miss the attentiveness to our comfort. And the food! That was another delight. Our group of 8 cornered the market in the "special dining areas" and they were very accommodating. We could not have asked for more (except dessert!). One of the most impressive experiences was when we disembarked in Venice, a lady fell. Viking employees were right there, had an ambulance, off to the hospital for a thorough checkup and then within less than three hours, back to the airport and on our flight home. Her daughter was with her, they were accompanied all the time by Viking employees and her daughter's remarks were very favorable as to the caring, effiicient, treatment Viking had provided. And would we go again? We are desperately trying right now to get on the Viking Sky which is completely booked. Sure would! Read Less

My wife and I retired in the summer of 2009, up to that point I had never taken a cruise. My main reason was that I didn’t want to be stuck on a ship with nothing to do. Well I must say, was I ever wrong. We have since taken eight cruises to date, with more planned in the future. Our first experience with Viking was a City Lights River Cruise, from Paris to Prague. Needless to say it was an amazing trip. The views along the Rivers were spectacular as well as the ports we docked in. When it came time for our excursions, they were extremely well planned. I was impressed by the way the crew members who went on our excursions looked after us and made sure no one got lost. Back on board the food was great as well as the entertainment and sleeping accommodations. I have always wanted to explore the Mediterranean via a cruise ship and when we heard that Viking had just introduced the Viking Star, we booked our cruise a year and half ahead of time. When it came time for our cruise we were once again extremely impressed. Upon our arrival at the Istanbul airport, we were met by Viking representatives and escorted to our bus. From there we were driven to our ship and upon arrival at the terminal were quickly processed and boarded the ship “The Viking Sea”. The system they have for scanning our photographs and activating our room cards was completed in an instant. Once on the ship we were kept informed on all activities via scheduled talks in the theater or simply by utilizing our television in our cabin, were we were able to view events, movies, major network stations, planned excursions, recent presentations and even an up to date breakdown of our account. When it came to our scheduled excursions, once again it was a seamless process. We received cards for our excursions as well as a daily sheet with scheduled events. Once we showed up at our meeting place, we were escorted out within five minutes and taken to our assigned busses for our event. The listening devices that were issued were amazing, allowing us to hear everything from our guide while on our excursion. Speaking of excursions, there were numerous ones to choose from on every port we visited. I was most impressed upon our return to the ship where were greeted by the Viking crew giving out champagne, towels, music, dancing etc. To date the staff of Viking are second to none! At the end of each excursion we were given sheets to rate our excursion, which I know are carefully scrutinized by staff to determine which ones to keep as well as which ones to discard. Our dining experience was pretty much the same as on other cruises however, the free unlimited wine as well as beer served with lunch and dinner made it more special. Our waitress “Maria” was phenomenal, which made our dining experience that much more special. Half way through our twenty-day cruise we were met by six other family members. We requested a table for eight as well as Maria and were granted both. We had such a good time at dinner with Maria that we cancelled some of our request for other restaurants The day our other family members were scheduled to board the ship I advised Mohamad our assigned housekeeping person of their pending arrival. He made of point of getting their cabins ready and they were able to utilize them much earlier than scheduled. We found Mohamed quite expedient in caring for our cabin and was always available to tend to our needs. When it came to doing laundry, we made of point of timing it and never had to wait for a machine to become available. What made it even nicer was the free detergent. The ship is much smaller than a regular cruise ships and when it came to entertainment, it was every bit as good as any larger ship. I was impressed by the digital stage backdrop that constantly changed as each event unfolded. The entertainment staff were extremely talented and after each show were available for greetings and questions. We found ourselves being entertained during lunch, tea time as well in the lobby. It seemed that there was always something going on. We discovered that the passengers were for the most part older with very few young couples. However, it was the right fit for us as it was a more relaxing and subdued. This also was to my advantage when it came time to utilizing the gym. Although there were usually persons there working out, I never had to wait for the equipment. We are looking forward to booking another cruise with Viking in the future. I know that with Vikings continuous strive towards perfection as well as the extremely friendly and professional staff we won’t be disappointed. Read Less
