I chose this cruise specifically for the itinerary. Since it was a relocation cruise, this itinerary was only offered once. A weather issue caused us to miss one port which was a disappointment, but of course could not be avoided. In A Corona we missed the excursion I was most looking forward to because of a marathon that was occurring in the city. This marathon occurs every year at this time; thus Viking should have been prepared and not posted excursions that could not occur. We brought my mother-in-law and sister-in-law with us on this trip. I had raved about Viking's ship, service, and planning. They had preferred another cruise line. This mix up was embarrassing and disappointing. Another example of poor planning was disembarkation. We had an extension to Iceland, but the rest of our family did not. Since we were on the extension, Viking would not allow us to disembark with the rest of our family that was not going on the extension. There was no reason for this since their disembarkation time put all of us at the airport with plenty of time to catch flights. Adding salt to the wound, when my husband and I arrived at the Bergen airport, it was so early that the airport facility was not even able to take our bags yet. We were told we would need to wait in the check in area for two hours before we could drop off our bags and proceed through security. This was not the airport's fault but Viking's. Since this area is not designed for waiting, there were very few seats and many of us standing around. Eventually, the airport began taking our bags as it was getting very crowded. Then we discovered that our flight was delayed which is not Viking's fault but added additional waiting time to depart in a small airport with little to do. If Viking is going to continue to do these early drop offs, they need to coordinate better with the receiving airports. Also, we had arranged ahead of time to have a cake delivered to my husband on his 50th birthday. Somehow they got the date wrong and delivered it on the day of embarkation (10 days early) and ruining the surprise. Finally, I had communicate previous to boarding that I am a vegetarian. I double checked with the restaurants on the day we embarked that they had this information, and they did not. I supplied it again. Went we went to the restaurants for our first reservations, again neither of them were aware of this status. I do not know how to communicate my needs more fully. I will say, after some fuss saying they had not been notified, my needs were always accommodated and we had many lovely dinners at both Manfredi's and The Chef's Table. My final complaint is with the Los Angeles office. There was a computer glitch with both booking excursions and booking spa services. Eventually the excursion glitch was fixed, but the inability to book some of the spa services was never fixed. I notified Viking via phone calls and emails directly to costumer service, but the problem was never addressed. Fortunately, we had early embarkation, and I was able to get my desired services by booking in person with the spa. The most upsetting issue with the Los Angeles office was being supplied with incorrect information. We had booked a private tour in Paris and needed to get off the bus that brings "on your own" excursion folks to Paris prior to the included bus tour. We were told this was possible only to learn once we were on the ship that it was not. We had to scramble to change times and locations meeting our guide. It all ended up working out but not without plenty of anxiety and inconveniencing other people on the bus. Our room was wonderful. We had had the exact same room (Explorer Suite 3001) on the Viking Star a year previous. It is spacious and very comfortable. We had a very nice room service dinner there for my husband's birthday. We were well cared for throughout our journey. We were aware that this Suite is a bit noisy from docking noises with ropes and anchors, so it did not surprise us, but others should be notified of this prior to booking this Suite. I know I have listed numerous irksome complaints. This does not mean that we did not enjoy our trip or that we will not continue to travel with Viking. It just means that our previous cruise was a 5 and this one was a 4 or 4.5. Indeed, we booked our first river cruise while on this trip. I am sharing these complaints because I think they can be easily addressed, so that Viking can continue to give 5 star service. Read Less

Saw the Videos on Viking Ocean and River Cruises and got the feeling it were a well runorganization. Viking Ocean cruise which I went on with 3 other members of my familywas amaze how excellent everything was . We went 2 days earlier to Venice. Unable tobook the pre-tour with Viking we booked the 2 days ourselves and had a nice time. Upon boarding the Viking Sea we felt immediately at home and welcomed. The Viking Sea Ship was just beautiful the interior excellent. 908 passengers was the right amount . Never felt over crowded. The crew members that took care of us,went out of their way, very attentive, always smiling, friendly and helpful. Our cabins were clean and well taken care of and this were also the same through out the ship. Opportunities to have Hand washing available every where was to me a sign that Viking care . Dining were such a treat and has left me with very happy memories. Entertainment made many of the evenings a pleasant way to pass the time. The Ports and Shore excursions, to no fault of Viking, were at times not the best, the Tour buses were very nice, the show and tell needs more work, Guides on the hold werenice and friendly, the places selected many could be better. Some tours the Tour Buswere parked far from the site .I would go again in a heart beat! The other thing not asked and not under Viking's control , The Dutch Airlines was goodbut Air France ,did not clean or tidy up from the previous flight, Read Less

My husband picked this cruise because he had read about the new Viking ships and wanted to try one. Also he hadn't been to many of the ports of call before. We loved the ship and amenities aboard. We liked the fact it was a smaller ship, more casual, and we liked the eating arrangements. There wasn't a definite time you had to show up for dinner. they had 24/7 room service if you wanted it. The port talks were excellent, as well as all the employees who worked on board. They were friendly, fun, and very helpful. The food was excellent also in all areas on the ship. The entertainment was wonderful, very talented people. They had several pools and hot tubs which you could use and lots of places to relax read and watch the scenery go by. We really enjoyed the Retired Colonel who lectured several evenings about the 2nd WW Torch offensive in Northern Africa before we docked in certain Ports of call. The shore excursions were great, easy on and off the ship. I could go on and on, but will end by saying we would definitely do another cruise with Viking. Read Less

I chose the cruise because of the ports we visited. Unlike the previous cruise, we had perfect weather and could visit every port. Embarkation and disembarkation were the best I have ever experienced. Because the embarkation day was my 60th birthday, my daughter and I had dinner at the Chef's Table. A lovely experiences with good food and an attentive waiter. The birthday cake was delicious. Having a sea day following departure is great. It gave us time to explore the ship and relax. The Viking Sea is a beautiful vessel, well appointed, spacious and easily navigated. The food is very good to excellent. If you like unlimited King Crab legs and shrimp, visit the World Café. For great waffles and a cosy atmosphere, have breakfast at Mamsen's. The only dinner we had that was not impressive was at Manfredi's. Where all the other meals ranged between 7 to 10 (out of ten), Manfredi's would have been a 5. Service, like everywhere else, was good. Our cabin was 3068. It was comfortable and the stewards were friendly and helpful. We took some included shore excursions and some additional ones. The included excursions were good, except the one to Cagliari. We had to line up for the only toilet available in town, which meant a 25 minute delay to start our walk through the old town. This excursion is short to begin with. There were less than 20 minutes left to do some shopping. The excursion in Algiers to the Botanical Garden and the Basilica Notre Dame d'Afrique was great, but again a short stop at the souvenir shop in the garden would have pleased us and certainly have helped the vendor, who was watching us go by with a sad face. We had police escorts in Tunis and in Algiers and felt safe at all times. Malta was my favourite and I can highly recommend the excursion featuring a lecture by a Maltese Knight. My daughter loved Valencia, where we took the included excursion which was well organized and offered a free shuttle back to the ship, if one wanted to stay on after the tour was over. My daughter (26) and I enjoyed this cruise very much. We would recommend it without hesitation. Read Less

This was my 8th Viking cruise, but the first one on the big ship. It was absolutely outstanding in every way. The ship was great, our cabin steward was marvelous. The dining options were perfect. I just wanted the receipe for the French Toast!!!! The evening entertainment was a joy and we looked forward to it each evening. Our choice of shore excursions was perfect. We were able to see how native people lived out away from the city and all the service was exceptional. We are still talking about many of the events which we were able to witness. The 4-wheel drive tour was unbelievable, going high up the mountain and seeing where the native people once lived. I would highly recommend it. We have signed up for the Viking Sea in December 2017 going to the West Indies and also signed up for a river cruise in March 2018 - Tulips and Windmills. Read Less

My wife and I retired in the summer of 2009, up to that point I had never taken a cruise. My main reason was that I didn’t want to be stuck on a ship with nothing to do. Well I must say, was I ever wrong. We have since taken eight cruises to date, with more planned in the future. Our first experience with Viking was a City Lights River Cruise, from Paris to Prague. Needless to say it was an amazing trip. The views along the Rivers were spectacular as well as the ports we docked in. When it came time for our excursions, they were extremely well planned. I was impressed by the way the crew members who went on our excursions looked after us and made sure no one got lost. Back on board the food was great as well as the entertainment and sleeping accommodations. I have always wanted to explore the Mediterranean via a cruise ship and when we heard that Viking had just introduced the Viking Star, we booked our cruise a year and half ahead of time. When it came time for our cruise we were once again extremely impressed. Upon our arrival at the Istanbul airport, we were met by Viking representatives and escorted to our bus. From there we were driven to our ship and upon arrival at the terminal were quickly processed and boarded the ship “The Viking Sea”. The system they have for scanning our photographs and activating our room cards was completed in an instant. Once on the ship we were kept informed on all activities via scheduled talks in the theater or simply by utilizing our television in our cabin, were we were able to view events, movies, major network stations, planned excursions, recent presentations and even an up to date breakdown of our account. When it came to our scheduled excursions, once again it was a seamless process. We received cards for our excursions as well as a daily sheet with scheduled events. Once we showed up at our meeting place, we were escorted out within five minutes and taken to our assigned busses for our event. The listening devices that were issued were amazing, allowing us to hear everything from our guide while on our excursion. Speaking of excursions, there were numerous ones to choose from on every port we visited. I was most impressed upon our return to the ship where were greeted by the Viking crew giving out champagne, towels, music, dancing etc. To date the staff of Viking are second to none! At the end of each excursion we were given sheets to rate our excursion, which I know are carefully scrutinized by staff to determine which ones to keep as well as which ones to discard. Our dining experience was pretty much the same as on other cruises however, the free unlimited wine as well as beer served with lunch and dinner made it more special. Our waitress “Maria” was phenomenal, which made our dining experience that much more special. Half way through our twenty-day cruise we were met by six other family members. We requested a table for eight as well as Maria and were granted both. We had such a good time at dinner with Maria that we cancelled some of our request for other restaurants The day our other family members were scheduled to board the ship I advised Mohamad our assigned housekeeping person of their pending arrival. He made of point of getting their cabins ready and they were able to utilize them much earlier than scheduled. We found Mohamed quite expedient in caring for our cabin and was always available to tend to our needs. When it came to doing laundry, we made of point of timing it and never had to wait for a machine to become available. What made it even nicer was the free detergent. The ship is much smaller than a regular cruise ships and when it came to entertainment, it was every bit as good as any larger ship. I was impressed by the digital stage backdrop that constantly changed as each event unfolded. The entertainment staff were extremely talented and after each show were available for greetings and questions. We found ourselves being entertained during lunch, tea time as well in the lobby. It seemed that there was always something going on. We discovered that the passengers were for the most part older with very few young couples. However, it was the right fit for us as it was a more relaxing and subdued. This also was to my advantage when it came time to utilizing the gym. Although there were usually persons there working out, I never had to wait for the equipment. We are looking forward to booking another cruise with Viking in the future. I know that with Vikings continuous strive towards perfection as well as the extremely friendly and professional staff we won’t be disappointed. Read Less
