This was our first Viking Ocean Cruise, it will NOT be our last. We have done many ocean cruises over the years, about 26 or so. The Viking group know how to give service and do it with a smile. During the entire cruise there was NOT one time when we ever came across a staff member that did not have a smile on their face. The food was great, the service was incredible, the ship it self was fabulous. I have to say from the time we arrived at the airport until the time we left to come home, there was ZERO complaints from any of us, there were four of us. The rooms are very well appointed, the bathrooms were amazing. The showers were top notch. You know the old saying, you get what you pay for, well, we did..... Viking is a little more money, however, if you sit down and look at it apples to apples, it really is a great value. Beer and wine with lunch and dinner in included, they did not scrimp on what they gave you. We received one FREE excursion in each port, they were well organized and gave you a great experience of each port. I totally recommend everyone try Viking. It was amazing. We enjoyed the fact there were no children on this cruise, not that we don't love them, just need adult time, which we had on this cruise. There were so many different things to do during our time on board, we never had an opportunity to be board. Read Less

This was the first cruise my husband and myself have been on. We have done quite a few land tours, but hadn't done a cruise yet. We were pleasantly surprised to find out how relaxing it was and really enjoyed the experience. We especially liked the ease of embarkation & disembarkation. One of the pluses of a cruise, is not having to repack your suitcase every couple of days when you move on to the next location, like you do on a land tour. All the ship personnel were so pleasant and helpful. They went out of their way to make everything special. The ship was kept spotlessly clean the entire time we were onboard also. And there were so many different entertainment choices to pick from. The dining was excellent, having different places you could choose from too. Wonderful food at all of the restaurants. We were so pleased with the Viking Cruise, we have already booked another cruise. Well done Viking Cruises!! Read Less

The special-ness of Viking began before we even set foot on the ship. Because of a death in the family, we called to see if we could board the second day when the ship was still in Puerto Rico. It was not only allowed, but a Viking rep arranged for a new flight and someone met us in baggage claim, took our bags outside to the taxi and loaded them for us, and sent us off with the taxi driver to our ship. This was above and beyond and we will never forget Viking's kindness. Although we had been to the U.S. Virgin Islands on a previous cruise, we hadn't been to the other islands and wanted to see more! The cruise was seamless--our captain even commented at the Farewell event that he had never seen such calm seas as we had for the entire trip. The islands have similarities, but they also have differences. We (2 couples) enjoyed all the "included" excursions on open-air buses (younger people might like more active excursions but we are heading toward 80 now) and they gave a great overview of the area without requiring a lot of walking. We did an extra excursion in St. Kitts, on the historic scenic railway, and saw some really beautiful country from the open-air train cars. Just gorgeous. This was our first Viking ocean cruise. We took the Viking river cruise down the Rhine River a couple of years ago and that's what introduced us to the Viking style. The ocean cruising did not disappoint... I can't believe how perfect everything was. Our Deluxe Veranda cabin was sleek and beautiful and cozy, I loved having a balcony with table & chairs, the bathroom in the cabin was gorgeous and roomy, the special touches, like a bottle of wine and 2 wine glasses waiting for us when we arrived, the quick attention at the Guest Services desk, the excellent staff everywhere, the smaller size of the ship meant no crowds for anything!, how spotless the ship (including the bathrooms) is kept, the beauty of the ship, and the food was excellent whether it was in one of the specialty restaurants or the pool bar -- all special and delicious. I particularly liked the chocolate croissants every morning with the great coffee, and the GELATO!!! What a surprising and delicious treat that was -- every day for lunch and dinner and sooooooo good. Oh, and a special thank you for the beautiful wash basins available just outside the restaurants, always spotless of course. We really appreciated that the ship had so many game tables on the floor above the Atrium. We play dominoes every night, and it was heavenly to listen to the piano music while we played. We also loved the guitarist who played out on the World Cafe deck in the evening. What a treat, to eat dinner al fresco while listening to his lovely music. The Viking Sea vocalists were all excellent, too. How talented they all were! We enjoyed all the shows we attended in the wonderful, comfortable theatre. We hope to do another Viking ocean cruise in the future. Thank you for a wonderful trip! Read Less

We had done three river cruises with Viking and throughly enjoyed them. This was our first ocean cruise with Viking and the experience was excellent (food, cultural enrichment, customer service, excursions). They always treat you special. They know you name and your likes and dislikes. Our Veranda Suite was great. It was spacious and very modern. The rooms were well appointed and having the mini bar included was great. The restaurants were excellent and had a good variety of food. The shore excursions were excellent, especially the whale watching in Dominica. We also had an included tour each day that gave us a good overview of each island. We feel that Viking provides the best cruises both ocean and river. They focus on cruises for adults and have appropriate activities. We highly recommend Viking cruises due to the overall experience. We will be planning more cruises with Viking in the future. My wife and I enjoyed our 2 additional pre cruise nights at the Hilton Midtown Hotel, New York. This was our visit visit to New York and hopefully it will not be our last. Prior to our arrival we had booked private tours of both the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building. We also enjoyed a show on Broadway. Our departure from New York was very special and made an excellent start to our cruise. The captain and crew coped extremely well with the bad weather we hit heading to Bermuda. Viking should be extremely proud of the staff who provide an excellent service onboard Viking Sea. They keep the ship beautiful clean and tidy. The ship is beautiful furnished and has a calm, relaxed, atmosphere. With there being so few passengers sun beds and tables in the various restaurants are freely available. The quality of the food is superb as was the spa. The infinity pool is a wonderful facility, it was nice when staff did not fully fill it so guests could stand. Excursions were well organised. We booked some of the included excursions and paid for some of the enhanced trips. We enjoyed our day at the Galley Bay Hotel and rail and sail excursions. Because our ship was so small it could dock in excellent locations. 2 of our visits included over night stays in harbour which was greatly appreciated. Our stateroom was in a superb state of repair and kept nice and clean by cabin staff. We twice enjoyed breakfast on our balcony c/o room service. The pool and gym facilities are superb. It would have been nice if Yoga sessions were provided free of additional charge and at better times to suit guests. Spa treatments and items for sale in the shops were extremely expensive. The various talks/lectures were highly informative and well presented. Our only constructive comments would include improving the evening entertainment and increasing the number of staff in the restaurants. Viking could benefit from trying to attract more younger passengers as many of those on board were very elderly and frail. Some of the classical music which was performed in the atrium seemed quite morbid. Some more cheerful music, ie jazz, should be provided which will add to a happier, fun, holiday atmosphere. We look forward to cruising with Viking again in the future. Read Less

Main reason for choosing this cruise was the itinerary and length of cruise. First the good points. A great airy and spacious ship, never felt crowded, all crew were excellent, the cruise director Jenna and her assistant very good !!.Food very good, buffet excellent (despited two/three days of G.I onboard meant highlighted hand washing and non serving yourself !) free internet good and speedy, spar (altho closed during GI) was excellent.Cabin altho smaller than expected was kept spotless by excellent steward and helper.24 hr cabin service very good and used !!! Not so good. Welcome at airport by cruise staff was poor and not well organised, they did'nt seem to know what to do and we were kept waiting for over 30 mins,When finally got to the ship no welcoming drink (after 24 hrs travelling ) and no direction where your cabin was,on other cruises i've been on both were provided (hope Viking read this !!) Service at speciality restaurant manfredis, was dire and we walked out, waited 40 mins for appetiser which never came, when I asked why the wait ? server laughed at me !! on walking out the manager was spoken to by me and he offered no reason other than bluster, contacted me the following night to explain they were having problems with the kitchen, pity he did'nt say that in the first place, felt like a poor excuse !! never went near the place, very disappointing, spoiled an evening,DIRE !! Included tours were all the same 2/3 hr run round mostly the same islands on poor transport,on very poor roads. Did three optional tours ,two whale watching which were very good as we saw whales !!,third one on St Kitts railway a complete waste of money and time, saw three bridges !!! and lots of grass, and some chap shouting at us for 2 hrs . For what I consider a expensive cruise I did'nt think I had value for money and will hesitate to use VIKING AGAIN. Read Less

This was our 4th Viking cruise: 3 river and 1 ocean. We had grown accustomed to the superb service, food, and crew aboard their river vessels, and, based on those experiences, we thought we'd try an ocean cruise. That turned out to be considerably less enjoyable than our previous Viking adventures. The public areas were absolutely beautiful, and the entertainment was very, very good for the most part. Our cabin was comfortable--one of the better we've had in all of our cruises. I would say that our ship was a marvel of nautical design. BUT, at times we experienced considerable pitch and roll by the ship, even though we were sailing in calm Caribbean waters. I asked an officer about why it became significant enough to cause people to ricochet wall to wall in a passageway. The answer was something about prop balance and/or a stabilizer. I was glad we weren't bound for Europe unless they could have that condition resolved in Puerto Rico. The crew were not as friendly and solicitous as those we'd become accustomed to on our river cruises. That is why we rank the service as average. Maybe they were just tired given that this was the last Caribbean cruise of the season before the re-positioning trip. The breakfasts and lunches were adequate, but--hate to say it again--nothing as good as those on Viking's river cruises. The food was only fair for those meals. Dinners were better, and we'd rank them as good to very good, but certainly not exceptional. The entertainment was almost completely enjoyable--even though the cast had worked much of the winter and had to be tired. We thoroughly enjoyed our time in the beautiful theater, and the computerized scenery and special effects were truly amazing. BUT the shore excursions were almost universally terrible. Poor guides, poor agendas, and sometimes terrible transportation were the norm, not the exception. When you find that you know more about St. Croix history than your somewhat bored guide, you grow resentful at the waste of time. I mentioned to her that two U.S. presidents had stayed at an inn we walked past. Her reply? "How do you know that?" Answer was I just read it on a historical plaque. This was in Frederiksted--the "free, included tour". The town was a shambles due to the hurricane. Rather than just take all of us to the lovely, less damaged city of Christiansted, they subjected those of us who trusted them to provide quality to a bad day. Obviously, no pay / no play with this cruise. They could/should have been more considerate. They had to know the condition of the place they sent us. So, our bottom line, honest appraisal of the overall cruise falls in the average category. It certainly did not live up to the commercials. I think that part of our overall experience was due to sailing just weeks after the terrible hurricanes that decimated many of the areas we visited. That may account for a handful of the sub-par shore excursions, but has nothing to do with the remaining issues. We're looking for another river cruise right now, and as much as we like some of the itineraries, we'll forego another ocean cruise. Read Less

After sailing exclusively on Oceania for 6 years, with 8 cruises on the Marina or Riviera, we read many good things about Viking. So this was our first Viking experience. Overall, it was a wonderful cruise. However, due to some lapses by Viking, the hype appears to be a bit exaggerated. Ship Design - Beautiful decor...furniture, artwork, even the food plates were impressive. Loved the Scandinavian wood styling throughout. Cabin - Very comfortable, though there was a lack of sufficient drawer space compared to other cruise lines Ive sailed on. But sine I pre packed many items in jumbo zip bags, there was no space crisis. Breakfasts - Our first one was at Mamsen's, where I was anxious to try the touted waffles. Not a good experience. We placed our order, and was told to take a seat and it would be brought to us in about 15 minutes. After 20 minutes, I reminded a server, who then brought it - cold. And the coffee was not hot either. The MDR had wonderful breakfasts, and attentive service. The smoked salmon and pancakes were particularly good. Fresh fruits delicious. Croissants inconsistent. Only once was there a wait to get in -10 minutes on a sea day - which shouldn't be the case on a cruise line like this. Lunches - Lunches at the buffet were consistently good with many selections. I particularly enjoyed the Bagel of the Day and soup choices,Though, I missed the Oceania experience of staff redy to carry food to an empty table. Staff was available to then take beverage orders, but not as attentive as Oceania. Loved the banana cream pie! The pizza looked unappetizing and had few takers. I missed having a cook to order pasta station which Oceania provided, and an occasional taco station. The outdoor grill had tasty burgers and hot dogs. Though, unlike Oceania where you would place your order and a server would bring it to your selected numbered table, I had to queue up and wait for the order, hoping there would be a table available, which were scarce compared to O's Waves Grill. Dinner - We shared tables in the MDR, and met so many nice, friendly fellow travelers. THree courses were just right. O's 5 courses were too formidable. The selection was varied enough and waiters were efficient. It was an inspiration to have local food options on the menu, depending on which country we were visiting. South American or Caribbean desserts were particularly scrumptious. The waiters not as friendly, chatty and visible as on O. An oddity was that we were always asked if we knew which dessert we wanted when the order was placed. (Too soon!) And we were never asked at the end of dinner if we would like coffee, tea, etc. The few times we had casual dining, there were ample choices. Specialty Restaurants - Manfreddi's had fantastic breads and steamed mussel. My lasagna was good but not stellar. We passed on the Chef's Table, since the menus on nights we could find reservations didn't thrill us. Room Service - The best on any cruise line. Not only were there hot items available to all passengers, but hot dishes like omelettes and pancakes, and coffee always arrived hot! Entertainment - The one man show by the Cruise Director - who sang and had a great sense of humor - was the best show I have seen on a cruise ship in many years. The Beatles tribute at a poolside party was so much fun. The Viking Band and the two vocalists was the most talented resident band I've ever heard. A varied repertoire of so many styles, even taking requests. The production shows were forgettable and original songs cringeworthy. Ship Excursions - We took two. The guide in Santo Domingo was informative and led an interesting tour. But in Santa Marta, the guide spoke too quickly, was a bit difficult to understand, and allocated too much time at a museum..the time should have been spent at other places nearby. Miscellaneous - The Viking Daily should have listed more port information. I found out later thst there were port guides available, but I liked the way Oceania's ship paper provided shuttle information, taxi and bus availability, and distance estimated fares to local destinations, concisely and readable the night before. It would have been nice to be able to obtain cash onboard. Oceania would provide cash through Guest Services. One word on guest lectures. We attended just one. The subject was on The Caribbean and World War II. However, 90% of the lecture was about events in Europe. Just a few minutes on what happened in the Caribbean, no detailed facts, almost an afterthought. Conclusion - The trip didn't quite live up to the hype. However, it was a wonderful trip with many many pluses out weighing negatives. This is a cruise line halfway between premium and luxury. If the wrinkles were ironed out (and did I mention the free laundromat?) this may be our cruise line of choice. But for now the scale is tipped to Oceania. Read Less

We chose this cruise because we sailed the Caribbean on the Viking Star last year. The ship and our cabin were always immaculately clean. After a couple of glitches the first day, service was fantastic especially at the Explorer Lounge. The first three ports, Dominican Republic, Cartagena and Santa Marta were average due to the crowds, hot weather and street vendors. The last three, Aruba, Curacao, and St Kitts as well as San Juan, Puerto Rico were very enjoyable. The included tours are very basic and would have liked some included beach tours as we were, after all, in the sunny Caribbean. The food options were outstanding with the food options at the Cafe as good as the dining room, especially the shrimp and crab claws. Manfredi’s steaks were outstanding! Purchased the drink package which was well worth it even though wine and beer included at meals. Loved never having to tender at any port, no pictures, free internet, no long waits to dining room. We’re already booked on Viking for Iceland and Europe even though we are elite on Princess Read Less

It was very nice however more expensive than similar cruises we have taken. Food was good and overall ship was nice. Entertainment was just average. Service was very good. Shore excurisions were good. It is difficult to have outstanding entertainment on this small a ship. Without a great many children on board it was quieter than most ships. We have traveled on Viking River Cruises a few times and I would say it is very similar. Probably wouldn't go again because we have done this area several times and because it is more expensive than similar class of accomadations with other cruise lines. I would add than traveling on Viking has always been something we have always enjoyed. Certainly the staff and crew have always been nice and courteous and do their best to accomadate you. Room service and attention left something to be desired. But as I just mentioned we have always enjoyed Viking. Read Less

This was my first cruise. My sister and I went with our Mom and her husband on this cruise, it was on her bucket list to go on one. We had a wonderful time and were very pleased we picked Viking for our first cruise. It was wonderful to be treated like royalty for the duration of our trip. We were met at the airport and shuttled directly to the ship with no issues whatsoever. I believe that initially we were to arrive the previous day and stay in a hotel in San Juan but with the hurricanes, most hotels were either not usable or full of displaced residents and people helping with the rebuilding. When we disembarked, we were dropped off at the airport directly. I also understand that normally, we would stay at a hotel near the airport for our wait but that option was unavailable. We were very impressed with the quality of the service and amenities Viking provided, from the staff that remembered our names and greeted us whenever we met to the fine food provided by all the restaurants. We ate breakfast and lunch primarily at the World Cafe and a majority of our dinners at The Restaurant. I can see no reason to eat dinner at the buffet when you can have such wonderful meals at The Restaurant. We had two dinners at the Chef's Table which were very unique and enjoyable although not meals we would eat on a regular basis, this restaurant is a tasting menu with wine pairings. We also enjoyed afternoon tea in the Wintergarden, a nice, relaxing break after a busy day. Our room was lovely and not the least bit small, in my opinion. Having the veranda was wonderful and I spent quite a bit of time each morning enjoying our entry into the various ports of call. I don't think I would want to cruise without the ability to step outside from my room. Our room steward, Arvid, kept everything in tip top shape and we enjoyed talking to him when we had the chance. We participated in all the included excursions except one (we had scheduled spa treatments when we thought we would be at sea that day) and all were very informative although I would have liked more walking and less bus riding. I understand the reason behind using the buses and it does work well for the age range of most cruisers on our ship (55+). The availability of excursions included int the cost of the cruise was one of the reasons we chose Viking. We did miss out on swimming on one of our excursions since it wasn't clear we would be spending enough time at the beach when we set out on our excursion (Guadeloupe). We added paid excursions, horseback riding in Puerto Rico, kayak/snorkel in St Kitts and snorkeling in St Thomas. All were well worth the money spent and I would not hesitate to do them again. I am very glad we opted to go on this cruise in spite of the hurricanes. It was very eye opening the see the devastation and recovery work first hand. All the locals were thrilled to see us and treated us great. We were the 2nd cruise ship to visit St Croix (an island not on our itinerary, Tortola was too devastated to accommodate our ship) and the first cruise ship into ports at St Martan and St Thomas. I used the spa for two massages, both of which were wonderful. The spa facilities are lovely and the sauna/snow grotto wasn't nearly as shocking as I may have expected. We didn't attend many of the shows available although we did listen to some of the musicians in the Atrium. We did hear one of the port talks while waiting to disembark one day and it was well done and informative. Although Viking caters to older cruisers, there were a few youngsters on board and I would not hesitate to take my 18 year old son on this cruise. This is not the cruise line to use if you are wanting casinos, waterparks and nonstop entertainment on board. All aboard the ship, the common areas were quiet and allowed relaxation and rest. If you want to sit and read and watch the ocean flow by, you can, uninterrupted by loud music and announcements. You will only be disturbed by an occasional steward asking if you need anything. Overall, I was extremely pleased with my experiences with Viking and the Viking Sea. I would not hesitate to sail with them again in the future and highly recommend them to anyone looking for a quiet, relaxing cruise. I was ready to get right back on board for the next trip after mine concluded. Read Less

We chose this cruise to go on with our family because everyone had off Thanksgiving week. The South American itinerary appealed to us and it was all inclusive. However, be wary of cruise lines that buy your air. You get the worst possible times and flights. They change your times and do not keep you with your cabin-mate. I had to literally fight with the air department to keep our sons on flights that were similar in times. They had one son arrive in Puerto Rico so late that a special van went to pick him up. When he arrived at the ship they asked why he came in so late from JFK, the biggest airport in the world. I said I fought with the air department about this but to no avail. The return back to NYC cost him an additional 150 down from the 350 that they wanted to charge. This was to have him leave at noon like his brother instead of leaving at 7:30 pm. Imagine those hours at an airport. The ship was beautiful. No complaints there. The food was OK even in the specialty restaurants. No crab legs after day 2. Had horrible game hens and told the head waiter. He just said that was unfortunate and didn't offer to replace with something else. We expected a nice Thanksgiving dinner like Viking provides on their River cruises. No such luck. Very poor to no presentation and they didn't even know what pumpkin pie was. The tours, although included, were another story. Totally unorganized and no one on the ship knew what was going on. I asked if one of the tours involved a beach as mentioned in the brochure and was rudely told no. Then I called downstairs and they said maybe. The next day everyone had beach clothing. The tour operator was yelling at the local guide and it was nothing like advertised. Just a walk up a mountain that was very strenuous. The ostrich farm tour had one of the trucks crashed into a tree and some of the passengers were almost hurt badly. Clearly they did not vet their tours ahead of time. Actually if you called Viking ahead of time , they knew nothing about the tours. My husband and my return home in first class was the trip home from hell. I called Viking to address these situation and one man asked me if I was trying to get money out of them. So I may think a bit before returning to an ocean cruise with them however their river cruises are excellent . A whole different story. Read Less

We chose Viking for this cruise because we had enjoyed both the river and ocean cruises in Europe that we have taken with Viking. The friendly staff and crew made this trip memorable. It is exciting to go new places and meet new people and Viking makes this possible for us. Coming back to the ship after a day of exploring new places is always fun because there is so much going on, you can never get bored! Love the afternoon tea! We particularly enjoyed the Enrichment Lectures. We went to every one we could attend after our shore excursions and on the two days at sea. Our favorite lecturer was the friendly spy, Jon Wiant. He joined us for breakfast one morning (before we knew he was on the ship's program) and later he asked us to join him at the Captains Table for dinner on Thanksgiving. We also enjoyed visiting with Ian Rumley-Dawson and his wife during an afternoon tea. Both of their lecture series during the cruise were interesting, informing and entertaining! If we missed a lecture, we could find it on the television later and catch up. The Viking Daily newspaper that was delivered to our cabin each evening kept us informed on entertainment and lectures as well as the events of the next day and most important where to meet for the shore excursions. The chef even gave us a cooking demonstration and recipe for Ratatouille and we later found it on the buffet in the World Cafe. For breakfast every day I enjoyed an omelet prepared just for me by the friendly 'omelet man'. By the end of the cruise he would give me a big smile and guess what I would select today. Read Less

Selected because we had not been to any of the locations except for St. Kitts, which was a substitute for Venezuela. We had taken one Viking cruise previously and that was the river cruise from Prague to Paris. While we LOVED the river cruise, it was more about the excursions and the fantastic job the guides did. The ship was great, the meals were great as was the crew. Europe is full of history and antiquity. The excursions on our Caribbean cruise were rather primitive in contrast to historic Europe. While we enjoyed experiencing the local flavor, it was nothing in comparison to our European trip. However, the ship was a fantastic experience! This included the nightly entertainment and the facilities. We saw every show and got to know who our favorites were. A tremendous Beatles review and a phenomenal Abba concert. The restaurants were superb and the facilities (gym, spa, sauna, steam room, and ice palace) were over the top. I used the sauna and ice palace on 4 different occasions. The director of activities on the ship was a delightful individual and kept us in stitches. We had previously taken two cruises with Celebrity. Food was mediocre, service was ok, and there were too many people on board. The Viking Sea was a perfect size and handled very well. We did the river cruise with my sister and husband and they joined us on the Caribbean cruise, along with my daughter and husband. Viking is the only way to cruise. We are having a difficult time deciding on our next voyage. Thank you, Viking! You're the best! Read Less

We chose this cruise at the recommendation of our friends the Sabree's who said it was good value for the money and I was looking for a way to celebrate our 45th wedding anniversary. Everything was first class from the condition of the ship to the service and of course the excellent crew. The embarkation went very smoothly in spite of San Juan recovering from a hurricane. We had trouble finding stateroom when we first boarded but were assisted by the "Four stripe" service manager who was very helpful. We enjoyed the dining and tried every restaurant and found them all to be superb. We especially enjoyed "The restaurant" for not only breakfast but for dinners as well. Shore excursions were good and informative. Cudo's to management for the last minute changes due to the hurricane. The substituted ports of call were well done. Since we were located on the eight deck, we used the Explorers Lounge for a meeting place for cocktails. the service staff made the effort to learn our names and addressed us by them each time they served us. This was the bartenders and waiters as well. We liked Viking so much we are taking a river cruise next year. Well done Viking!! Read Less
