My wife and I have cruised many times in the past. we usually cruise with some friends who decided that we all should cruise the Baltic for our annual cruise in 2019. They chose Viking Ocean cruises, due in no small part to the excellent reputation of which they had read and the fact that what could be better than to take a Scandinavian ship to cruise the Baltic. At the outset, we were shocked to find that the entire cruise needed to be paid at least one year before the cruise. That has never been our experience in sailing with multiple lines and future patrons need to be aware of this requirement. The ship is beautiful. The public rooms are wonderful especially the Explorer Lounge. Our cabin was quite roomy and the bathrooms excellent. special kudos for a lovely shower without having to step over a tub.I found the heated floors in the bathroom to be a nice touch. The spa area is spectacular and if going to a spa with virtually everything-hot tub, small therapy pool, sauna and ice room is your thing, this is your ship The company touts its multiple channels of communication available to those who are scheduled, but that is primarily limited to receiving one way announcements from them, done well, but not to any dialogue or getting personal support for questions which arise and may not be answered in their stock announcements.Poor communication seems to be common on these cruises. For example, special meals opportunities, lobster tail and steak, special buffets, at the grill were never announced well and one learned to look for these each day by dropping by the grill itself or asking of the crew in a restaurant or bar. The ships plan is good but when the special meals take place in the grill area there is inadequate seating for the number of cruisers wishing to partake in the meal. The seating in the cinema is wholly inadequate for the number of passengers. Quite a few performances occurred with many passengers standing in the back to observe the show. The back two side areas were totally inadequate both for seeing the show and hearing it.The need to get to the venue 30 minutes before shows began was difficult for those of us who tended to to eat dinner at about 7 to 7:30. I was quite disappointed to discover that we did not receive services comparable to what we had received ion either Oceania or Azamara in spite of the fact that the per night per person cost to sail with Viking was considerably more than either of the other two. My concern with the cabin service is that when I wished ice, I had to go to housekeeping, when I wished lime I had to go to room service and when I wished to change my complimentary liquor and the amount of tonic I needed to speak to the drink steward. This in my view is rather poor considering the price of the cruise and the plaudits from other cruisers. Viking offers one free shore excursion at each port. The walking tours we took, 4, were excellent, but those in a bus were not worth the time spent at all. I was quite disappointed in the meals in the Restaurant ,in the Chef's special restaurant both times and at Manfredi both times. To be fair, one night the prime rib served at the restaurant was amongst the best I have ever had. The waffle at the Explorer Lounge was exceptional. On at least 4 occasions the cookies offered with the buffet were stale. the wines with meals were acceptable if unremarkable. One could upgrade wine selection and liquor for an extra daily per person charge. The speakers/lectures seemed excellent, for those we could make, but we missed the largest number as they were scheduled during dinner hour or just prior to dinner hour. Getting on, on the day of sailing from Bergen, and off the ship in Stockholm, with our luggage, were superbly handled even though we left the ship at 6 am to make our plane. Read Less

We had taken a Viking River cruise and loved. I wasn't sure what to expect on there smaller ocean ships. It was and incredible surprise. They offers so much entertainment and the staff was prefect, after several days you were on a first name basis, every staff member spoke English which was very nice, you wanted for absolutely nothing. Port excursions were excellent and well organized. Being 67 I appreciated this is not a cruise line for children nor is it a cruse line for gamblers who spend there day in a casino. Minus kids and gamblers made for a great atmosphere of fun and conversation. On a late arrival back to the ship after and all day trip to Berlin were were greeted by 200 of the ships crew in line out side the ship with a welcome back, music, champagne and horderves. Upon arriving at our cabin we found a plate of finger sandwiches, deserts and a bottle of win which a letter from the captain apologizing for the German train system delay, they did this for all 600 people who were on that train. Tell me what other cruise line would do that. I will continue to be a loyal Viking customer. Big ships with 5000 of your closest friends are not necessarily better Read Less

We were looking for a cruise that would allow us to see a variety of Fjords and Scandinavian cities. We checked other cruises and cruise lines and ended up going with Viking because the itinerary offered a good combination. We had sailed with Viking on a River Cruise and wanted to try their Ocean cruises. Our room was a deluxe veranda which was fine. The bathroom was roomy with heated floors, the fridge was stocked with drinks and snacks that were included and the bed was comfortable, although we needed extra pillows. Storage and charging outlets were adequate. The main dining room was nice. The staff was attentive. The breakfast menu was fine, the same every day. The dinner menu had a selection of appetizers, entrees and desserts that did not change and also had menu choices that changed daily. The food was generally tasty, we had a few disappointments. The buffet was nice but there were a lot of lines and waiting. Sometimes the coffee service in the buffet was not great. We enjoyed the lunch and dessert options in the Explorer Lounge. Excursions: the included excursions were ok although some were more walking than was enjoyable for us. Attending the port talks was very informative. Taking the train to Berlin made for a long day. We were there during a heat wave, the train was not air conditioned, but the windows were able to be opened. However there were long stops both directions. We would recommend this cruise, the entire staff was great and we liked the lack of things like bingo and art auctions. Read Less

I chose this cruise because I have always had an interest in visiting Norway because of the scenic nature of the country. The scenery is really amazing from the fjords to the mountains of this great country. We saw so much in such a short time period with included and optional tours in 8 different countries. I was amazed at the beauty of Estonia and Russia. Only disappointment was not being able to dock at Gdansk Poland because of the weather conditions. I was particularly interested in Poland because of my husband's German ancestry. Everything about the 'Viking Sea' was top notch. We where spoiled by the service offered .... room service, dining, entertainment, friendly staff and general organization. We liked the size of the ship, the rooms where awesome with the balcony to slip outside and take in the view. I really enjoyed the nightly entertainment, every bit as good as taking in a theatrical production in Toronto for me. Everything was top notch. Of course I would go again & actually have already booked an Alaskan Cruise for 2020 with Viking. Read Less

This was our 1st Viking Cruise. We are used to the large crowds on cruises, lots of kids running around and searching for a table at breakfast and lunch.. We enjoyed the peacefulness of this cruise with no one under 18. There were never any crowds to encounter except when entering the theater and that was only for 5-10 minutes when the doors first opened. You can really relax. The towels in the public rest rooms were a treat. Towels were readily available in the pool area on the shelves which is very nice since you don't have to wait in line to get a towel show your room key and check out when done. The throws in the Living room and Explorer's lounge were a nice treat as the pillows in the theater. The lectures were very informative. The stateroom was great and the heated bathroom floors were a treat. We loved the included tours at every port, very convenient. and the lectures each day on the ports. We did miss the large production shows. The embarkation process was very smooth from the time that we picked up our luggage to our check in at the airport. There were plenty of Viking personnel on hand to assist. We have booked another Viking cruise since we returned in early Aug. Read Less

Ship and amenities were all first class. The crew and restaurants were outstanding. Enjoyed the lectures and port talks, especially Michael Scott. Embarkation and disembarkation went very smooth and on board Services even arranged for a car to take us to our stop over in London. Great help so everything went smooth. I can't say enough about the Ship, from the decor, facilities, crew, shopping and especially the entertainment. The pianist , guitar player and all the entertainment was so very enjoyable. Our cabin was great, roomy and our cabin attendant Alvin? couldn't have been nicer. It seemed like he always had the little extra that was needed. Even though the weather and fog kind of worked against us somewhat the cruise was still such a joy because of the ship, crew and the little things that made it so enjoyable. It was nice also to have so many extras built into the cruise package, like the drinks at lunch and dinner meals. Our dinning room attendants and servers were above and beyond, "Vicky and his helpers" were outstanding. We just hated to leave the Ship. Looking forward to our next adventure. Read Less

We wanted to try a Viking Ocean Cruise, and wanted to visit Iceland, Norway, Scotland, and London. This cruise fit the bill for us. Everything about the cruise was good! The accommodations were excellent! Some of the best pillows I have had on a trip! The food options were great. Our room was always clean and ready for us. Our crew were fantastic -they were very helpful, extremely polite, and very friendly. Great representatives for Viking. The spa services we booked were also wonderful! Massages, and then time in the pools and saunas was very relaxing. I would highly recommend booking a massage, and definitely go down and use the spa area. The fitness room was nice as well as the outside walking track and the exercise equipment on the top deck. Since I try to eat a plant based whole food diet I was happy to find many good offerings in several of the restaurants on board the ship. The excursions that we took, both included and extras, were quite good. Entertainment on board the ship was great! Can’t wait to book our next trip! Read Less

We chose this cruise because it stopped in countries we wanted to see. We had never been to any of these countries and we liked the option of seeing all of them. We spent several days in Stockholm prior to departing. We were able to leave our luggage at the port as we were too early for arrival, and visited a lovely photography museum at the port. We were very happy with our cabin; it was comfortable, plenty of room for our luggage. Loved the bathroom. The ship was beautifully appointed. We spent some time exploring the ship, all levels to get our bearings. The ship offers quite a few amenities: a spa, massage, two pools, quiet spaces for reading, The dining options were excellent. Two dining restaurants require a reservation, but you can go in if there are openings. The main dining room offered menu options and seating for 2-4-6 and 8. We enjoyed the company of several couples on board and hooked up with them for our evening meals. Shipboard entertainment was also excellent. The artists were quite good, the seminars by the historian were very helpful when preparing for a shore excursion. We took advantage of shore excursions at each port. The guides, the transportation, were all first class. We were able to sign up for most of the excursions we wanted. We would especially recommend the two day excursion in St. Petersburg. It included most of the sites covered by other excursions i that city and you don't have the overhead of leaving and returning several times in a day. You head out in the morning and return in the evening. Finally we want to commend Viking for their staff. They are friendly, knowledgeable; if they know what you like to drink, it will be brought to youj without your asking. Cabin staff make sure your room is always clean, towels and bedding are clean, and any particular needs have been addressed. Awesome. We will definitely travel with Viking again. Read Less

The ship was lovely. Common areas resembled living rooms or casual seating so you felt like you were at home. The broad expanse of windows in the Explorers Lounge was one the favorite gathering spots. The crew were very friendly and called you by your name within a few interactions. Our steward was very attentive and eager to please us. The food was better than most cruise ships although their pizza could have used some help. We did the specialty dining most evenings without an additional expense. Wine, soft drinks and cocktails were available with your meals, which certainly beats what most ships offer. The laundry facility was very beneficial and unexpected. The Spa was a nice experience. The massages we had were excellent. The pool area was like a grotto of sorts and very soothing. The excursions were well planned and very interesting. We already have another Viking Ocean Cruise planned for December. We would recommend this cruise to mid-age to elderly travelers. Read Less

Wife and I have been cruising over 25 years. These days we prefer suites on longer cruises so we upgraded to the Explorer Suite. Well worth the money. Great room and largest balcony we’ve ever had. Viking Sea is only two years old so we were definitely spoiled. Ship is in great shape and many things on board are fascinating like the shower in the suite. It’s walk-in with no ledge. Great drainage via great design. Heated towel racks etc. were all as one would expect in the top-rated suites. Room came with lots of extras and as the brochures say, all is included. Room service was great for early breakfast when shore excursions were leaving early. Service was impeccable. Food was great. Entertainment was so-so. The night club was fun. The house band playing in the night club was probably the best musicians on the trip. Had a great couple singing just about anything you could name and they hit it out of the park. Bar tenders do the flippy thing with bottles which is fun to watch as well. Pools, gym, etc. was all new and great. This trip was Barcelona and Beyond, a three-week cruise I understand they will no longer offer. Itinerary hit the Baltic region where we’ve never been. I’ll be brief and say this was the best cruise we’ve ever been on in over 25 years, but there are a few things that surprised us. 1. Shore excursions: The literature says shore excursions are included. Wrong. One shore excursion is included at no additional charge at each stop, but that excursion usually consists of a 3-hour bus ride with the tour guide talking about a site as you drive by. These are also what you get if you take the transfers onto the ship and off. They use the 3 hours to kill while the ship gets ready for boarding or the hotel is ready for check-in. I’d probably take a taxi in the future. Plan on paying for excursions the old-fashioned way if booking through the cruise. You can book your own through somebody like Viator.com but if they don’t get you back in time you’re screwed and the boat leaves without you. One thing about Viking, they stick to a schedule as far as departures. 2. Tips: The literature states a daily rate is charged per person that goes to handle all tips. Not really. At the end of the cruise we wanted to help out the crew and give more money by charging it to our room account and directing that to be split between members of the crew. After I already made the payment, I was talking to members of the crew. Each individual told me the same story. They get the same amount in their checks regardless of how full the ship is with guests. They never see any variance in the amount which strikes me as unusual since I’m sure other guests probably had the same idea of adding more to the account. So, if you want to add to the base amount go old-school and get envelopes from the passenger service desk and stuff your cash in them for tips at the end for those you believe deserve the additional amounts. 3. Hotels for before and after: Viking did an excellent job picking hotels. At least 4 stars for each. 4. Before and after excursions: You’re on your own for these. Viking only books those that occur during the cruise. At least they did on this one. We arranged our own. 5. Web site: Very useful. Fill out all the information for express check-in in the My Journey site. Site also had good info and videos of stops etc. Study it well in advance of your departure. 6. Travel insurance: Viking offers insurance that is good for the trip, but could use more for medical. You might want to augment this coverage with a medical that offers additional coverage. For instance, in states I had to be airlifted after an accident which cost over $40,000. In Europe and other parts of the globe, should the unthinkable happen, anything that flies costs 4 or 5 times that, plus the additional cost to repatriate back to the states. Just something to think about Summary ….. it will spoil you taking other cruises. Read Less

We selected this cruise for the destination (Bergen to Stockholm) and we selected Viking as we were travelling with relatives who had previous experiences with Viking - they said they would not cruise with any other line again after several cruises on Viking and some other lines and we now agree with them. We greatly liked the fact that the ship was not huge, holding 1000 passengers. One of the best things Viking offers is the QuietVox, a personal listening device with headphones for each person while on tours. This enables each person on a tour to hear the guide over the headphones - no more missing what a guide said or having to rush to be next to them to hear. As someone who is hearing challenged, this helped me tremendously. The additional talks offered by various experts throughout the cruise added greatly to our experience, it was very nice that they were on the TV in our room for times we could not attend live. The entertainment choices were varied and everything we saw was fun and well done. There were so many options of things to do that we were busy the entire time. The fact that the saunas / hot tub / cold plunge pool/ snow grotto was free to everyone on the ship was very nice as some places charge extra to use those things. The shore excursions were wonderful; the local guides offered insights about living in the areas we visited as well as pointing out sights of interest. Returning to the ship and having a warm towel offered to you, then many times a glass of sparkling wine, was a luxurious feeling. The staff and the service was awesome - everyone was friendly and welcoming. There were multiple places to dine and each was well staffed and everything we had was delicious. Local food from the areas we were visiting was offered each day, as well as some standard fare. Everything was fresh and well prepared. The housekeeping staff was wonderful and did a great job to keep everything clean and ready for us. We had such a wonderful time that we have already booked a Viking cruise for next year! Read Less

Overall, our on board experience was very good. The staff and service was outstanding. The dining experience/food was wonderful and the ship was new and clean and designed with an understated elegance decor. Entertainment and activities were fine, however were geared toward an average age of 65+ and older, not the average age of 55 years old that Viking advertises. The majority of port stops were wonderful, however Berlin was not enjoyable (2 hour train ride each way just to get to Berlin, then only 4 hours in the city). Included shore excursions were good, primarily bus or walking tours with groups of 30 people though at some times were slow moving. Viking's policy for optional excursions on their ocean cruises should be considered before booking a cruise. Optional excursions are offered to passengers based on cabin levels and sell out quickly to upper cabins passengers before they are available to mid-level cabin passengers for booking. The primary reason we choose Viking was to take the optional two-day excursion they offered in St. Petersburg, Russia, however it sold out before our booking date. Fortunately we found the same tour online and booked it directly with Alla Tours, a Russian tour company which was outstanding! The company did not require a visitors visa, was half the price of the Viking excursion and did not require payment until the end of the first day of our tour. We booked other tours on our own online in several ports which is very easy to do and saved a great deal of money (over $800) by booking on our own. We are considering booking a Viking river cruise since passengers can purchase optional excursions at the time of booking, allowing passengers to see which excursions are sold out or are still available before they book the cruise. Admiring spectacular fjords and experiencing midnight sun embarked us on this journey, and Viking Ocean Cruise - Into the Midnight Sun far exceeded our expectations. We were (and are) very happy that we chose Viking and took the trip. The crew met us at the airport in Bergen and escorted us to a very comfortable looking bus. We were given a bottle of water, much needed at that moment having traveled hours. Needless to say, the bus ride to the ship was smooth ensuring us of a good trip. Checking-in was thorough and efficient, and friendly. We went to our room. Our steward, greeted us friendly but discreetly. He was informative, introduced each feature of the room and his service. Bags were delivered. We unpacked. Afterward, we walked around the ship. There were lots of reading areas! An actual library too! An atrium (where daily digital showing of Munch's collection accompanied with live music took place), five (5) culinary restaurants, gym, spa, theaters, etc. Modern, yet warmly yet cooly welcoming decor and furnishing. For the following 15 days, we enjoyed our home on Viking Oceans: tasted culinary delights, immersed ourselves in cultural and intellectual enrichment on board programs, participated in included and optional excursions learning and experiencing visiting villages, town and cities, and nurtured our body with stretching exercises at the gym or a run around a 1/4 mile track around the ship - incredibly freeing experience running in the ocean. We chose this cruise because of the itinerary and able to add on Iceland. We were able to visit a number of ports in the Baltic and also visit Iceland for a few days. We had a deluxe veranda. Also we had a few days with drizzle, we had a great time. Iceland and the inner circle, Gulfvoss Falls and the Blue Lagoon was great. We flew to Bergen and got on the ship for the cruise travelling to Norway, Denmark, Denmark, Estonia, Poland, Russia, Finland and Sweden. The Baltic is beautiful and although enjoyed the history in that region and all the cities, we especially enjoyed Norway, Denmark, Poland and Russia. On the ship, the staff was especially to our needs. Any place we chose to dine was excellent and we tried them all more than once. Chef's Table is food and wine pairing with smaller proportions and the menu changes every 3 days. Manfredi's is the Italian restaurant on the ship and anything on the menu is good. I especially enjoyed the steak tartare, mussels and steak which was a specialty. Any night we were at Manfredi's, someone at the table had the steak and raved about it. The Restaurant was the regular dining room and the food there was also excellent. I loved the Norwegian Poached Salmon. The World Cafe had not like other buffets and is a must; besides the night's specialties, there was always an assortment of sushi, sashimi, shrimp and crab claws. Read Less

I choose this cruise for two reasons, first because of Viking and secondly because of the trip itself. Th Viking sea is a five star ship with outstanding service. It is a beautiful ship. The cabins are comfortable and each room has a balcony. Each room has a small refrigerator that is restocked daily at no charge. It has candy, snacks and juices. There is coffee machine in your room as well. There is a small Laudermat on each floor for the guests to use. The furnishings are lovely Scandinavian pieces. Even the furniture in the grand hall are very nice. The grand hall is three levels where entertainment is provided each evening. There is also a bar for after dinner cocktails while you listen to the piano player, guitarist or string trio. There are also nightly talks given by the tour director. The restaurants are many and varied according to your taste whether it be Italian,a steak house and several others to try. The buffet is outstanding serving everything you could possibly want from a variety of soups, breads, fish, meats, vegetables, and desserts. They even have sushi available. And of course wine and beer are available at lunch and dinner. There's plenty to do on board from the exercise room, the spa, the snow grotto or go for a swim The staff are efficient and will see to your every need. And they do it with a smile. The only thing I wasn't thrilled about was some of the tours that were included. Maybe some of the tours you pay for were better. The best tour guides were in Berlin, Norway and Poland. This was our second cruise with Viking the first was a river cruise & the second the ocean cruise. The room was fabulous - we were in a deluxe veranda with heated bathroom floors, mini bar, cappuccino maker, robes and slippers just to name a few appointments. Food and service was excellent. They offer an excellent selection of wines & beers which are included with you meals. The staff always remembers your preference (i.e. I preferred a glass of white wine with the appetizer and red wine with the main course - impressive!) The shows were great and the lectures interesting. The spa, snow grotto & sauna were great - after spending time in the sauna you are encouraged to spend time in the snow grotto - this is a Swedish ritual. Then you can spend time in the spa or relax on heated lounge chairs. The ship also has an infinity pool & indoor pool. We can't say enough.
